Looks nice. I installed the same Bilstein 5100s front & rear w/rear AAL setup on my 2018 Frontier SV 4x4. One thing to pass on may be to loosen all brake & e brake lines before lowering the front or rear axles. You could see yours really coming tight on top or the rear pumpkin(as I cringed). But, it really looks good... Congratulations & enjoy!
Thank you so much for this vid. I am installing the same add a leaf to my 2017 TRD Offroad. I am also adding a 3" front lift as well. Nice job, and thank you!!
That's a perfect stance....I even prefer a little more rake myself. I don't know why the hell everyone's trying to level their trucks....mall crawling I guess. If you use your truck for truck things at all you're gonna want some rake....nothing looks worse than a saggy ass! I actually put in the Firestone airbag system for easy adjustment....I always wanted to do it to my old '03 but never got around to it, but works great on the '17.
I definitely liked the leveled stance more when I first bought my truck. And I think that’s fine if you don’t use your truck to haul much. But I started using it to haul stuff more and more and I started not liking it so much. So yeah I’m all about the take now. Just more functional
Just found tour channel. I like your videos. Make me think I can tackle putting on my suspension when I eventually get one. I want to do the same setup you did
Hello. I've been enjoying your off road videos lately and have commented on a few of them. This video came up when I was searching for info on Add-a-Leaf and Bilstein 5100's. If those are 5100's I've got a question. There are two 5100's listed for the Tacoma rear. One is to be used in conjuction with a 0-1" lift and the other for 4" lifts. Do you know which one you ended up using? Thanks a ton!!
Thank you I'm about to do a add a leaf and bilstein shocks just like you and I wanted to see how it was and I wasn't sure if you needed to upgrade the upper control arms but I guess not because not that high of a lift
Shane strohm yeah I feel you. And really you don’t need to. They may be slightly out but it’s not gonna hurt you. Tires may wear slightly unevenly but not that bit of a deal
Why did you opt for increased coil spring weights to get lift instead of just using a higher clip position and using stock springs? I've asked this question to some of the common Tacoma aftermarket suppliers and keep getting indirect answers. I watched your 3rd vid and I can say that I don't want as much stiffness as what you ended up with. I suppose if you were adding a bumpers, a shell and other gear it might equalize, but as an empty truck I don't know why heavier springs are being suggested. Also, I too would love to know if you ever determined any comparative on the TRD Bilsteins vs. the 5100? Yet another mystery. I appreciate the straight forward review.
So essentially the reason I chose to do new springs instead of adjusting the clips is because the spring themselves provide the lift. Therefor, your will be more travel out of those springs compared to the stock springs. For me that was important. And they are honestly just 10 lbs higher rating, I think they just needed to break in. Also, if you’re planning on doing more serious off roading I would go 5160’s for front and 6112s in the rear. MUCH better suited for off roading than the 5100s. In fact, I’ve talked to bilstein and they told me that the 5100 are rated for a lift above 1”. Which isn’t a big deal on the street but if you’re flexing the truck then it is
@@OFFTHEGRIND Perhaps I'm wrong, but it seems that stiffness you're realizing is from the higher rate spring. Also, too I don't believe you're getting more travel doing it this way. Seems like the range of travel is limited by your bump stop and shock length. So with the new 5100 regardless of the spring used (stock vs AM) your travel remains constant. The lift is variable by changing spring and or clip position. At least as I understand. With this I'm still at a loss as to why some companies are selling lift like this when truck weight remains constant through mods. Watch the videos from @TinkerersAdventure.
Good reasoning with thinking ahead. My TRDOR is stock but I’m building a cabin and I’ll be getting a snowmobile and a UTV. Now you got me thinking ahead with my future mods👍. Is there a 1” Aal option out there? Did your rear settle much?
Brent not that I could find. There’s a 1.5” three leaf add-a-leaf system, but from what I’ve read you don’t use the overload leaf so it actually hurts load capacity. Could be wrong, but that’s what I’ve seen. If you’re hauling stuff like that, I think you’d probably be better off looking at an entirely new leaf pack from OME And yeah, I think it may have settled, but half an inch at the absolute max
How has the 5100's and the add a leaf been holding up under weight with a bedrock, rooftop tent, and camping gear, coolers, etc..etc? Now that you've been using this set up, is there anything you might do different if you had the chance? Great video, thanks.
I would guess that I have about 350-400 pounds of gear when I load up for a trip and it just about levels the truck. Off road, it does feel a little floaty but I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that the weight of the tent is up so high rather then the springs getting soft under load. I think I’ll likely get a medium duty leaf pack eventually but for now they are great! Can’t say I’d do anything any different
What clip setting are you running in the front? My truck has a 1” spacer in the rear that I wish to replace, it squats really bad with anything over 200lbs, and rides pretty rough when driving over potholes or rough roads. I also noticed my truck sits a bit lower in the front has a bit of rake, I crawled under and it looks like the previous owner set the front clip at the 4th clip setting, do you think that moving it to the 5th setting will raise it up a bit and level it with the rear I were to AAL ? Or would the 5th setting and the AAL yield the same stance I currently have?
The 5th and an add a leaf is essentially what I have here. They will give you about two inches front and back so it will maintain the rake. Difference is though that the add a leaf handle weight a whole lot better
Kevin Lee yeah I did actually. I love the way it turned out! I absolutely hate chrome so I used plasti dip to test it out, but it’s held up really well
Glad I could help! Just so you know, I talked to Bilstien after this and they said that the 5100 is not rated for more than a 1" lift in the rear. I would highly recommend upgrading to the 5160 as that will handle the lift better. the 6112s would be a good upgrade for the front as well. But it depends on your use. If you're not doing heavy off roading where you are drooping or hanging a wheel, then you'd be fine with the 5100s
What size tire to you think you can fit now? I've been researching again and again for a suspension upgrade to my 2020 TRD OR Manual and this seems to be the most reasonable. What are your thoughts now after 6 mos? Pros/ Cons? Would you go a different direction if you were to do it again? TY
33s easy in the back and up front with a little cutting. For the price I don’t think you can beat it honestly. It is a bit of a rough ride specifically in the back, but with some weight in it it feels fine. I’d love some Kings to get that cloud feel but not going to drop that kind of money on those.
How’s it going man! Sick video! After it settled would you say you still have a 2” lift in the rear when empty? And how much lift do you have in the front?
Thanks! I didn’t think it did, but I just put a new suspension on and I would say it sagged probably half an inch both front and rear It is 2” front and rear
The add a leaf, if you choose the single add a leaf, adds a little to payload capacity. It does however make the ride a bit stiffer when unloaded. Loaded though it feels great. If you’re just looking for aesthetics, then the block is fine. But if you use your truck for hauling or a roof top tent, then go for the add a leaf

Lot less bottoming...like nil even when it does. No kidney belt needed now..lol. Get the shocks at a bare minimum. The stock shocks cant handle bigger tires/wheels.
Dan Summers I’m running 265/70-17 right now and definitely no running issues. I’m running a zero offset wheel so I think I could get away with a 285/70-17 based on what I’ve seen other people run. There is a ton of room all around and behind the current tire so I think it’d be fine
Hey David im looking to getting a bilstin 5100 and wanna do 2inch in the front and 1inch for the rear do I need the aal or can I just run that set up?? I have a 2020 tacoma trd offroad very new to the tacoma world any advice will help a rookie.
Yes, but I learned after the fact that the 5100s weren’t designed for that much lift. So I’m telling you know that I’ve learned. The 6112s and 5160s are the move
Honestly man. I don’t remember. It was a pain to find initially and I can’t find them again. I will be sure to include them in the next install video and if I find them I will for sure let you know. I’m sorry
DavidJenk253 how about fuel economy with the 265’s? How much did it all settle, if any? I just bought 5100’s all the way around and doing an AAL too. I plan on setting the fronts to 1.5 and expect the rears to be within the 1.5-2 inch range, just trying to get an idea from someone with a somewhat similar set up
Not much of a change with the tire size. They are barely bigger than stock. The front settled maybe .25 of an inch but the back I don’t think settled much at all. It ended up being 2” front and rear and I really like it. I have a tent and stuff now so when it’s loaded it is level
@@OFFTHEGRIND Yeah, she looks good man.The biggest difference is im planning on using the stock springs to get 1.5 up front and the toytec AAL in the back which I guess is approx 1.5-2. Did you have the infamous taco lean?I don't recall you installing the 1/4 inch strut spacer in your first video for the fronts. My truck does and im debating on whether to get it or not, afraid it'll be more pronounced with the lift.
Not gonna lie I think your truck looks awesome with your wheel and tire set up you have now, I'm looking to do something similar to my 2012 tacoma I currently run 265/75/r16 toyo open country rt trails on black rhino shogun wheels 16's on stock height, I'm wanting to keep the same rake only just slightly lifted on both sides, thats if my melt mod won't help me with the slight rub on the front. Also, I'm not an offroader by any means, but would love to hit up some trails and a little muddin, what would you recommend? The bilstein and OME springs in front and block in the rear for what I want to achieve??? Thanks taco bro 👍🏽
Bigger tires? Don't do it brother. I jumped up to 33's and I now feel like I should re-gear. Maybe that's just the conclusion most guys reach eventually.
@@OFFTHEGRIND 275s weight almost as much as a 33s 4,6 or 10 ply tire. 275s for Ko2 or Falken Wildpeak weight 56-58lbs. Almost the same as a higher ply 285. I have called both Bf goodrich and falken who are popular for making this 275 size and they both told me the reason it weights so much is because they were meant to go on Jeep stock from the dealership and Jeep asked them to design it heavier.
Chris G oh interesting. That’s really good to know. I have probably two more years on these before I’ll replace them so we’ll see when the time comes. I have loved the K02s though so I’ll most likely stick with them
@@OFFTHEGRIND I've never had them. Currently have the Falken Wildpeaks and love them. I'll probably try the KO2s next and see what all the hype is all about. It feels like it's the most common/consistently used tire out there.
If I didn’t get the K02s I’d get wild peaks or ridgegrapplers probably. The K02s are good cause they perform well in almost all conditions, snow rates, much quieter than expected, and they wear very slowly too. I have nearly 30k on mine and they still have so much tread
You did this by yourself, great job! I can save me some money 💴 if I do this myself. The average cost to take it in to get a lift kit, $5100. How much would I save and what was the hardest part of doing it by yourself? I was thinking the Add-a-leaf.
No the bilstein 5100 is the lift kit. It cost around $800 from headstrong off-road. Honestly I have know how much you’d save cause I never priced that. But assuming technicians charge $100 per hour, I would imagine $500-$700 to install. The add a leaf really isn’t that hard. Honestly don’t know what the hardest part would be. It’s all pretty easy
@@OFFTHEGRIND so ima assume you didn't like it.. aha in fact. I just received my stage 2 kit with the wheelers single aal. I thought I knew all about the add a leaf and all. But after purchasing it. I realize I've dig deeper into it. Progressive or a new leaf pack is far better and comfortable than a single aal. Single aal is great, but you'll need to have weight to keep the ride qaulity okayish.. block isn't the best, but definitely a lot more smooth and definitely gives you the lift of your desire. And I believe a single aal. Just adds more to axle wrap than stock leafs or blocks.
It's nice to see somebody working with regular hand tools and not super fancy, expensive tools! Truck looks good. Lifting mine this weekend!
Good luck with the lift! I’m all about doing things with the most basic way possible

I just got my 19 trd or. Want to try a little off roading. Be cool to head out there with a small group
Yeah absolutely. There’s a few guys in the area that we’ve been trying to organize a trip. Hit me up on IG and we can try and organize something
Where are you from in Washington?
Vic Lung in the Tacoma area
LINK FOR THIS ADD A LEAF DEAVER PLEASE, 5100 rear shock?
I got them off headstrongoffroad. And you should get the 6112s for the rear. I talked to bilstein and the 5100 we’re not intended for a lift over 1”
@@OFFTHEGRIND thank you, I already got the 5100 so block I guess is only my option
Did you use angled shims under the AAL?
Yes I did. I just reused the factory ones
Did you notice any shaking of the steering wheel after you lifted the rear?
@@christrujillo7203 Not at all. It made my truck feel more stiff but in a good way. Not that annoying bounce they have.
Looks great. How is the ride?
It’s not too bad. A little stiffer than stock. I have a separate video talking about that specifically
Be sure to re torque the rear U bolts after a 100 miles or so. Mine were really really loose after a 100 mile road trip...torque is 73 lbs
I removed the factory overload spring. Ride is so nice and comfy...as trucks go. Got a full1.5 inches of lift
Wow good to know thanks. Will do
what size tires you have on the video?
265/70 17
@@OFFTHEGRIND they don’t look bad. Did you upgrade?.
@@MrPinkDoors no not yet. Really thinking about it though
What size are your rims? 16x8?
17x8.5
What tire size ?
I dont know why but I love how you just use basic hand tools. Even when cutting off the long bolt. Lol...
That’s all I got man! Haha
@@OFFTHEGRIND lol...yeah same here...i know alot of people here is in the same boat too...lol...great video tho...thanks!
Bigger tires? Don't do it brother. I jumped up to 33's and I now feel like I should re-gear. Maybe that's just the conclusion most guys reach eventually.
Chris G I feel it. I want to regear eventually, and not sure whether I want to go all the way to 33s or do a 275/70
@@OFFTHEGRIND 275s weight almost as much as a 33s 4,6 or 10 ply tire.
What kind of lift is on the front?
Maka Makalena there’s a part one that details the front suspension
@@OFFTHEGRIND ok I'll check it out...thanks
What aal did you go with?
Deaver
@@OFFTHEGRIND how's the ride qaulity with the single AAL? and did you enjoy it? Better than stock?
Way stiffer. Bro are you gonna buy a kit any time soon? Haha
I know this is a 3 year old video at this point but JESUS go get another set of jackstands even the recalled HF ones will do at this point.
I didn’t have any issues with just the 2 I had
👌🏽🤙🏽
Will you regear to 4.88 or 5.29?
Eventually yes I’d love too. If I’m going to do it it’ll be the 5.29
Where did you bought your leaf spring?
Headstrongoffroad.com
You did diff drop ?
Emmanuel C I didn’t do any shims to correct geometry at all. From what I’ve seen based on this lift it wasn’t necessary
Thanks man , looks very nice !
Emmanuel C thank you!
What did you use to cut the center bolts?
JakerFitness just a hack saw
