- Step-by-step instructions for installing Bilstein 5100 suspension install for a 2nd Gen Toyota Tacoma. As lift kits go this is probably the best budget lift kit I have installed. The Bilstein 5100 shocks are a perfect all-around shock that has survived the test of time. This kit works with the Old Man Emu heavy-duty springs to give the front a 2.8" lift.
We also added SPC upper control arms to give us the much-needed adjustability to get back to the sock ride quality. They also have an upgrade greaseable ball and they're trademarked xAxis sealed flex joints
In the rear, you have a few different options from a spacer to added leaves, or a completely new leaf pack. We went with Icon added leaves to give us that one inch of lift to match the height of the front. If you're going to carry a lot of weight in the rear of your truck or change it over to a full-fledge overland rig I would suggest the new leaf pack.

@@4xhoser this is the first time I’ve modified the suspension on any of the trucks I’ve owned so I don’t have a huge breadth of experience to draw from but so far I really like the kit. Gave me about a 2” lift in the rear, the 5100s, AAL and airbags were pretty easy to install in my driveway w basic tools and the airbags especially have made a huge difference when towing my camp trailer. The kit overall significantly improved the ride when not towing.

This is the perfect fit for my 2015 TRD OFF-ROAD, I'VE been looking for a lift nothing too overkill and this should give me the stance and clearance i want for my truck

Budget doesn’t mean crap. You can have expensive lift that is crap just as easily as a budget lift that is quality

FYI: I used the Bilstein 5100 series on my 2018 Tundra Limited 4x4 w/Premium Package.
It has had no effect whatsoever on my TSS system. Even though the dealers tell people not to modify the suspension.

I added KSP upper control arms, add a leaf for the rear and full Bilstein 5100 on my 4x4 Nissan Titan. I can’t imagine the ride any better.

urs came off easy. i had to push out that wire tap thing, just one though the one to the left when looking from the inside, then i had to unscrew something on the inside that was bolted near the battery and then even when i had the clearance initially it still wanted to drag the entire way so i had to get a crow bar and put it along side the head of the bolt and hit it the entire way out, i did that though from the bottom inside at first then went inside the hood and banged it out the rest of the way. the parts i removed were 9 years old a 2012 tacoma 4x4 access cab from north east pa, everything fought me. every single damn thing lol.
Saved myself the hassle and had TOPNOTCH do this installation. 😅😁
Such a great tutorial and informative video. Thanks for putting all this together! Just a question tho, have you ever experienced any vibes after a 3 in lift? I head lots of had that issue after lifting. 9 out of 10 times, the issue is solved by changing ECGS CV axle bushing. Thanks in advance.

Yeah from everything I've heard what you did with the bolt through the leafs is exactly what you don't want to do use a c clamp and compress the leafs then tighten the bolt
Great video. What notch is the clip on the front struts? I already have the springs on my Tacoma with ome struts. Had them for almost 8 years. They are ok but the bilstines are a great value.
Do you know if the 4runner TRD PRO will fit in the tacoma it looks a lot like the set you are installing

Hey man, could you post a link to the type of light you are using to illuminate your work area. Would appreciate it, I like how you are able to work with that light on
I did a complete OME kit with new springs all the way around. The OME struts didn't last so upgraded to the Bilstein 5100 struts. Not impressed with the Bilsteins. Next I installed some Rancho RS5000X. Very impressed but they blew out on one trip to Death Valley. Got a full refund. Next was the Rancho RS9000XL. Adjustable at the 7th setting worked out great.
Sounds like you drive very aggressively. I look at getting some top self products that can handle it

@@rudedogii why a cheap rancho? Go on some taco forums, ranchos are at the bottom like rough country, ranchos are not rebuildable, they are throw aways, at least bilsteins are rebuildable, i have 5160’s with remote reservoirs and 8112 fronts with remote resi. They are awesome!
Cheaper is piece of crap quality, less expensive refers to good quality at a less expensive price. Taught to me back in my retail days by a wise old door to door vac salesman.
How do you install the spring on the shock on the front with a spring compressor ?

Nice video, I noticed the order in which you installed the bushings on the top of the rear shock was wrong. it should be a washer, bushing, the thin washer with a flange pointing up, then after you push the top rod in the mounting hole, a bushing, the top washer, and nut. The thin washer with the flange keeps the top part of the shock from shifting around in the mounting hole...I am guessing that you were tired after doing all this work and didn't notice this.
Considering all the other lifts I see require differential drop spacers. I didn’t see you install any to adjust the CV angles. Is there a need for them on this set up?
Above 3 inches yes. This is a 3 inch lift, so it is not needed.

No we didnt, and there isn't any vibration

Anyone have an issue pre collision sensor after leveling with these shocks ?
Had 5100s and 265/70/16 Tires installed on my 2018 Tacoma OR and now the system error comes up and stays on.
Shop did alignment and the truck drives completely fine.
Also installed a OEM Pro grill with OEM garnish about 3 months ago without any issues.
I’m thinking the shop might have moved or damaged a wheel/brake sensor .
So after seeing this I called toyotech and they said the OLD MAN EMU springs heavy duty won’t work on my 5100 Bilsteins. I’ll have to by both struts and springs old man emu. Can you confirm with absolute certainty that these springs will work? Also will the OLD MAN EMU Dakar leaf pack heavy duty work with my rear 5100 bilsteins.

It sounds like OME is CTA. I haven't tried the combo of OME springs/leafs with Bilstein shocks so I can't confirm that they will work. If you measure them and the are the same as the stock size I would guess they would work.
As for the rear the leafs.will work, but the shocks might not be long enough... Only one way to find out
What size tires would you be able to fit onto this after the lift? Im thinking about doing this to my truck, I’d like to be able to put 32’s or 33’s on
Yeah you can fit 33s
On a Tacoma, in order to fit 33”s and nor rub at full lock when stuffed in the front you need- 3” lift, uca , cut some fenders, cab mount chop and weld, pinch weld hammered, also depends on your wheel offset, the farther the tires stick out, the more prone it is to rub on cab mount area, Billy’s are great shocks, but you need to get lift springs omn the front , and still your max lift after sag is 2.25”- 2.50” , you cannot get true 3” lift after settling with Billy’s. You can put a 1/2” top plate spacer, that’s the only way, but some don’t recommend
Question on the way you installed the washers and bushings on the rear shocks. I just got my 5100s installed and noticed that you have yours (from top to bottom) nut, black washer, silver washer, bushing, frame, bushing, washer. The old shock i pulled out had nut, washer, bushing, frame, washer, bushing, washer. Any particular reason you went this route instead?
If I really we were following the layout of our truck... But I also like the idea of having the bushings touching the frame, and not the metal washer

What shocks for the rear. I have 2013 with 3 inch lift. With my camper and heavy bumper and all the crap in the back the weight is about 600-700 pounds. I am in stalling deaver leave springs because I bottom out on when off road and float like a boat on the freeway. I am currently using toyotec shocks front and rear. Might change out front shocks too.
Install sump springs? Or air bags.
How’s the ride quality with the heavy duty springs? I just ordered the medium duty 888 springs and I’m worries I maybe should have gone with the heavier rate spring.
It's a little ruff, but not bad at all. Dose the medium make a level ride height.
I just installed this kit but went with the completely new leaf pack in the rear. Now my front is around 2" lower than the rear. Is that because I went with the heavy leaf pack and that's what lifted the rear so much? I plan on having a RTT one day but the look of the truck now is off.. Is there a way to level this out and keep that heavy leaf pack?
It sounds like the suspension kit you installed didn't lift the front. Did it just replace the shocks and reuse the stock springs?
Typically the HD leafs are a 2" lift spring and stiffer to compensate for added weight in the rear like a Bed Rack, RTT, up graded rear bumper.
You could remove some leafs from the pack and that would make the ride softer and lower it a bit. But it also might make it feel like you're driving a boat on the road

Your shocks would be your limiters for down travel
The sheet metal on my 2007 Tacoma pre runner access cab on the passenger side completely blocks the bolt from coming out, there's no way to just bend the sheet metal out of the way. I'll need to buy a new oem bolt and cut the existing one off. Also, for the Bilstein 6112's I'd recommend disconnecting and turning the sway bay up and out of the way. The 6112's are thicker and you can't get them in and out without completely gumming up the shocks agaisnt the sway bar's bolt.
It's hard to believe body would be that different between pree-Runner and trd sport. But may w they are. We did have to bend the metal quite a ways to get the bold out
CAUTION!! On the rear install, you have the order of washer/dampeners wrong. It should be the hard-dull washer first, dampener, thin washer (bulge up!), then in the truck bracket - Finish with the other dampener and the other plated thick washer. Otherwise good video.

After the springs brake in they drop a little but it wasn't half an inch

And your on top setting so you have compressed your spring to the max, giving a stiff ride.

What if you still need to load stuff in the rear? Per say dirt bikes etc. If the truck is level putting weight in back would tilt the front upward slightly. Anyway to keep the rear stance higher?
Yes, you're correct. Many people don't think in advance of all the weight they are going to add like bumpers or tents or dirt bikes

How was the ride quality with the rear leaf pack?
Stiffer than stock. Little bouncy but minimal. I was also unloaded so if I had some weight in there I bet it would bring down the bounce. Going to get a new set of leaf springs for the truck soon, Deavers!

exact same thing I did but with rear reservoir in back, add a leaf and spc upc , and front bildstein, 265 75 16 duratrac, 2 inch lift, mine looks much better. lost about 1 mpg..
Did you recalculate for the difference tire size?

This is the point where I say maybe... I suggest everyone that gets 3" or more to have them. But if you're just under... Than maybe. It definitely wouldn't hurt to have them.

Should not have talked the upper control arms until the car is sitting on the wheels it needs to be loaded now you going to stress the bushings out when the car drops over time you're going to tear them up they need to be talked at original at ride height that was the first mistake
These specific UCA can be torqued while it's still up in the air. They specifically say it in their instructions
of all the appropriate tools i have..... i have a cheap ass torque wrench. no explanation
