I traded a 2018 Ram 2500 for my 2021 Tacoma TRD Off Road. In my opinion, the Tacoma by far out performs off road than the Ram, interior size and rear seat comfort is where the Ram shines.
I owned a 2012 Tacoma TRD Off-Road for 6 years and 120k miles (4.0L V6, 5 speed auto) before jumping into Rams. I did a ton of off-roading including Hell Revenge in Moab, etc, so they are capable. The A-TRAC did help the front end with no locker. The only consideration is size which is good/bad. Lacking bed space, cabin space, and towing but they're pretty lightweight so if you don't need the capacity of a larger truck they're a great choice.
you nailed it on the head. if you don't actually need a truck to do truck things then this is a great option. obviously you could tow some sleds or atv's but I wouldn't be wanting to tow camper trailers with this tacoma.

@@GettysGarage I choose the FJ because of its short wheelbase better approach angles and cool factor ( I knew cool factor is subjective) I used to own a 92 4Runner and it was very off road capable with a small lift and tires.
Power wagon is extremely nice and for its own uses it's the badass truck! But the Tacoma off-road I would say would probably be close to as good as the power wagon for numerous reasons much lighter & much smaller, tires tho leave a lot to be desired...
I have the same one, really love the truck but hate the transmission. Wish I bought the manual. Never done any real off roading with it either haha I just didn’t like the looks of the trd sport with the hood scoop. You have a nice shop dude!!! That pit is scary tho haha I’m guessing it was designed for busses/semis? There’s no margin for error with the taco on there….
Good video. In Wisconsin, the Toyota Dealers have new frames stacked up like cord wood. Toyota has been replacing full frames due to rot. Nice trucks but they do not stand a chance with salt......
There were replacement frames for the 2nd gen Tacomas. 3rd gen have not had those problems. Also every truck manufacturer has had frame problems and only toyota actually recalled them.
Intéressant...que pensez vous du nouveau Tacoma 2024 avec toutes cette technologie? Moteur turbo et da fiabilité? Pas sûre moi que ce soit un super choix!!!!
wow, I rolled into the dealer and they had this truck sitting there. but in regards to the front suspension it's a typical independent front end. upper and lower control arms with your Bilstein off road strut. besides the Bilstein shock everything is the same on your standard Tacoma
In the USA you can get a trd off road in a double cab long bed. For the first year of this Gen (2016) you couldn’t even get a double cab off road in Canada, nor in any year second Gen
A Toyota Tacoma can get a 6”2 bed from factory with 4 doors it’s just not as common as the 5”2 bed the only model that can’t get a 6”2 bed is the trd pro
You better check your Payload again, it’s at the drivers door and my sticker says 950 pounds. There’s no way yours gets 1500 pounds payload! My 2019 Trd has a 6 foot bed!
You need to check your door sticker to find the actual payload. There is no way a Tacoma TRD OR Dual Cab has 1540lbs. It's probably more like 1140 for that particular truck.
Just a thought on your comment about payload weight…your power wagon most likely has a steel bed sitting back there. That Tacoma has a composite bed. So ya the power wagon has a shit ton MORE payload, it’s just already taken up by the empty bed.
didn't know that. and ya thats what I figured the PW is already such a heavy truck it kind of kills the payload whereas the Tacoma is just a lighter truck and therefore allows more weight.
I have never owned a truck and lived in an area that snows. Is it a pain to have to clean out the bed full of snow from leaving it outside or is it a good idea to by a bed cover for that issue?
appreciate the honesty lol I thought it would be an interesting truck to review, I've always liked them and they are usually tough and well built. that being I get the PW out and see if the this lighter truck makes it further in the snow.
Okay review I guess, definitely cover what others don't! I have a 2016 exactly like the one reviewed. I mostly use it for hunting and backwoods travel, l love the short bed for turning around on small trails/roads. I have a bed extender and leave tailgate down if I need to haul more... Best of both worlds....
@@GettysGarage the double cab with the 6 foot bed is the one with the longer wheelbase. The 6 foot bed on the access cab is taking up the space where the double cab would be. Not adding extra length. But it will add length if you combine the 6 foot bed with the double cab.
im about to buy 1 but i live in city and in winter get lots of snow. also i do go hit some very small trails twice a year. ppl may think im stupid for gettin this lol but i like how its lifted stock and sits higher. i also go fishin so that extra bed length will be good. im gonna test drive a 2017 tomorrow
If one is bashing those skid plates in a stock truck then one is in a place they shouldn't be and that is driver judgement. Heavy skid plates add weight and impact fuel efficiency and payload and that is a detriment to most uses for no gain.
I love my 23 taco, I bought it for reliability, to early to see yet how it holds out, I previously owned f150, so many problems all the time, I liked my ford for how spacious it is inside, high tow rates and man in sport mode the v8 really shines, but reliability for ford is just not there anymore
being completely honest I don't know much about them. I have heard they are hard on fuel but from a reliability stand point I'd have to do some digging!
12:08 That’s because he has no idea what he’s talking about. The internet is an amazing place where you can research any topic (regardless of how complex it might be) before posting something on it. MTS is BY FAR the most important feature on the trd o/r or pro.
6:10 no you can't dent it with you fist bro smh watching too much anime 12:03 the owner says multi terrain select is useless....but he's also never used it...tf?
pro is like $10,000 more for no reason, trd off-road has the rear locker, and access cab version. way to go for sure. Also hurry and get one before the '24 version comes out. '24 version is a turd
@@MrDjones55 yea this guy is delusional lol a heavy duty diesel that’s heavy af and long ass wheel base is not going to be more off road capable then anything, a damn rav4 prob can get further then a ram 😂
@@MrDjones55 all his numbers are way off on everything too it doesn’t have a 1500 lb payload it’s more like 1100 and it doesn’t tow 6800 it tows 6400 and it doesn’t get 20 mpg it gets 22 mpg and the sport gets 24 stick
He said Power Wagon, so selectable front and rear lockers, sway bar disconnects, a factory winch, more gearing, taller tires, and more power. So, yeah it is more capable unless it doesn't physically fit on the trail.
Been looking at these since the third gen came out. The truck I want doesn't exist. Longbed. Manual. Push button start. White or blue. Longbed and push button are only auto. I love the truck though. Manual has crawl control that is entirely pedal actuated and driver controlled. (JK)
lol the old manual crawl control. I mean it is a cool concept just didn't seem to work in the snow. I bet in mud or sand it works well! nice trucks though
The Tacoma is NOT a "heavy duty" vehicle. Heavy duty is 3/4 ton and up. That means Ram or Chevy or GMC 2500/3500, or Ford F-250/F-350 or above. This is a LIGHT DUTY vehicle i.e. half ton. It's equivalent to Ram or Chevy 1500/Ford F-150. If you're confused look at other auto makers naming, Chevy/GMC even has HD in the name for 2500/3500 but there is no HD in the name for 1500.
the Tacoma is a mid sized truck. what i was getting at is the payload numbers. Technically this Tacoma can put more payload in it then my Ram 2500 Power Wagon. having an HD truck means nothing. for example most HD trucks have a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 10,000 lbs. but if the HD truck weighs 8,500 lbs then you can only have 1,500 lbs of payload. Yes the truck is bigger and stronger and the axles are tougher. but you can still only have 1,500 lbs of added payload before you are overloaded. where as the Tacoma may have a max GVW of 6,000 lbs but it only weighs 4,460 lbs. meaning that you can but 1,540lbs of payload in the truck. resulting in a higher payload. yes the truck is not as "heavy duty" but it can handle more payload.
The Tacoma payload isn’t what it seems. We have a ram 1500 and Tacoma . Our rear struts needed replacing under warranty and we dont put much weight in ever. Ram way stronger.
Love the Tacoma … but hate how limited the models and options are . Like having to get the short box to get the off road goodies. Another thing that’s completely insane .. you cannot get the trd off road model with the 4 door cab in a manual transmission. Like what ? I want a less optioned SR5 long box, with a manual transmission and a locking rear diff . But that’s not available. It’s a shame .
@@georgedreher2322 are you in the US ? Here in Canada that truck is not available. But you can get a sport with a manual. Why not a off road. Seem ridiculous
lmaoooo. I mean in reality you could probably put the Taco on a trailer and pull just about anywhere. On the flip side the Tacoma ain't pulling the PW anywhere.
It's an okay midsize truck. My only problem with them is, some people not all, ride the high horse pretty high about them where I live. They are a rough ride and have no room, not sure why it has been deemed as so superior. Depreciation is the only superior part about them IMO. I think I would rather a Ranger. More room in the cab and better bottom end torque, also a deeper frame. Rangers towing capacity is 7500 lbs. The internet is just swamped with Toyota fan boys and they don't sell that many trucks. I think the old Corolla drivers must get online and chirp. Now the new Tundra from an engineering/mechanical standpoint is superior to others on the market, different story there. Credit where credit is due.
great comment! love the honesty, and I would agree there is some folklore around these trucks that may over hype them. I will agree the interiors are very basic for how expensive they are, it's also pretty loud when driving and the ride was rougher then I expected. I did think my Power Wagon would mop the floor with this tacoma but it actually held it's own very well. That video should be coming out tomorrow!
I don't own any of these trucks but from sitting in several of the trucks and positioning the seats to where they were comfortable for me and sitting in the different seats I'd have to say the ranger was the smallest inside, the only thing it had more of was head space, but felt much more narrow and less knee room in the back. The Colorado was a little better than the ranger but still felt more narrow than the tacoma witch yes had less head room and dose have a different seat feel. But I don't mind ether way because I'm used to driving what ever get's me from here to there, usually old work trucks or cheep used vehicles and comfort usually being secondary. Also I might have miss understood where you said they don't sell that many trucks but I'm pretty sure I saw information on midsize trucks sold and the tacoma sold as much as the next three competitors combined but I might not have understood what you meant and that just my experience, by no means law.
@@kevinjust6740 Disagree the new Ranger is not small inside, I test drove one. Plus you don't hit your head on the A pillar like you do in the Taco. I'm 6'1 and headroom is not a problem and you don't sit on the floor of the thing either. It's the international platform and that is a heavy frame for a 1/4 ton. Toyota sells 60-70k Tundra's and 150k Tacos. Ford and GM sell nearly 1 million pickups a year and Ram is 600 to 700k. So nearly everything you called me out on you're wrong about. I'm sure in the next gen Tacoma will correct all these things, ride, fuel economy, cabin room. Then all you fan boys will wonder why you spent all these years on the internet tapping the keys. That's sure what they did with the Tundra.
@@peiguy1982 Lol well like i said i don't own any of these trucks so calling me a fan boy don't really mean nothing but you seem alittle defensive about it. I was just giving my opinion about how it felt for me someone 6' who sat in and tested these and the ford for me was like holding hands with the person next to me but obviously you feel different, like i said it don't matter to me. But i was specifically talking about midsize trucks not the whole line of vehicles or trucks. And not that BS that ford puts out about being they're F series being the best selling truck when they don't tell you that they classify all they're trucks, even the semi trucks they make F series. So from my dealings with fords and working in several of they're factories and dealing with people that work there i'd personally never own one, so i'm not so much a toyota fan as much as don't trust or care for ford fan i guess. But i still say of the trucks in the midsize class it feels the most narrow to me, but yes does have more head room and in the end to each his own as long as the owner is happy with it what does it matter.
I don't care l chose Toyota any time over any amarican product l like Toyota no one bits it if you like American crap it's up to you but I take Toyota any time 😂🤣🤣

@@GettysGarage I choose the FJ because of its short wheelbase better approach angles and cool factor
( I knew cool factor is subjective)
I used to own a 92 4Runner and it was very off road capable with a small lift and tires.
I would prefer them to keep the sunglass holder on top and put the crawl control somewhere else.
I agree with that. not the best location.
Good video. In Wisconsin, the Toyota Dealers have new frames stacked up like cord wood. Toyota has been replacing full frames due to rot. Nice trucks but they do not stand a chance with salt......
Save that nonsense...that applies to 2005-2010 Tacoma...Tundra..and the Sequoia...has nothing to do with the Gen 3
There were replacement frames for the 2nd gen Tacomas. 3rd gen have not had those problems. Also every truck manufacturer has had frame problems and only toyota actually recalled them.
Intéressant...que pensez vous du nouveau Tacoma 2024 avec toutes cette technologie? Moteur turbo et da fiabilité? Pas sûre moi que ce soit un super choix!!!!
You can get a crew cab with a long bed in any trim except for The Limited and a TRD Pro
You can get a long bed limited with double cab. Not the pro though
@@ez56789 are you in Canada?
Splitter splits the airflow around the vehicle. Challenger SRTs have spliters
Toyota trucks have Air Dams to limit the air going under the truck.
Ya didn't show the front suspension assembly???
I've got a 2019 TRD Off Road, love it.
I ordered a 2022 last Dec... Still waiting...
wow, I rolled into the dealer and they had this truck sitting there. but in regards to the front suspension it's a typical independent front end. upper and lower control arms with your Bilstein off road strut. besides the Bilstein shock everything is the same on your standard Tacoma
I have the 2020 OR and was able to order the 6ft bed from the factory.
In the USA you can get a trd off road in a double cab long bed. For the first year of this Gen (2016) you couldn’t even get a double cab off road in Canada, nor in any year second Gen
A Toyota Tacoma can get a 6”2 bed from factory with 4 doors it’s just not as common as the 5”2 bed the only model that can’t get a 6”2 bed is the trd pro
ya that's what I've heard but for what ever reason my friend could not get the 6'2 option for this truck.
In this Tacomas i love everything except leaf springs and rear brake drums
You better check your Payload again, it’s at the drivers door and my sticker says 950 pounds. There’s no way yours gets 1500 pounds payload!
My 2019 Trd has a 6 foot bed!
How many vehicles have you dropped in that trench?
A-TRAC is the system you referenced as ATC.
6' bed is available on TRD Offroad.
MTS is not completely useless. Probably in snow but NOT completely useless
agreed, in the right application it has it's use!
You need to check your door sticker to find the actual payload. There is no way a Tacoma TRD OR Dual Cab has 1540lbs. It's probably more like 1140 for that particular truck.
Would be nice if you showed the actual door jamb stickers regarding capacities, not the maxes from the website.
Just so you know I watch your channel for the Power Wagon content. That said I've had 3 Tacoma s and would have another one.
appreciate the honesty lol I thought it would be an interesting truck to review, I've always liked them and they are usually tough and well built. that being I get the PW out and see if the this lighter truck makes it further in the snow.
Okay review I guess, definitely cover what others don't! I have a 2016 exactly like the one reviewed. I mostly use it for hunting and backwoods travel, l love the short bed for turning around on small trails/roads. I have a bed extender and leave tailgate down if I need to haul more... Best of both worlds....
the short wheel base would be best of off road use! I was nicely surprised how well this thing performed off road!
your wheelbase is no different than an access cab with the 6 foot bed btw. I like the 6 foot bed that can actually fit long items that i use for work.
@@limixz28 really eh? that seems odd
@@GettysGarage the double cab with the 6 foot bed is the one with the longer wheelbase. The 6 foot bed on the access cab is taking up the space where the double cab would be. Not adding extra length. But it will add length if you combine the 6 foot bed with the double cab.
Nice video. Plastic skid plates do help tbh.
I would definitely like to see TRD Tacomas with a longer bed.
Is this a review on power wagon or Toyota Tacoma TRDOFF road?
There is a guy on tacomaworld that has an 2018 Tacoma trd off-road with 300k miles and still going.
Mine has 305,000....still runs great.
13:37 sure you can find a Big Three full-size for possibly less, those won’t last longer than a Toyota
im about to buy 1 but i live in city and in winter get lots of snow. also i do go hit some very small trails twice a year. ppl may think im stupid for gettin this lol but i like how its lifted stock and sits higher. i also go fishin so that extra bed length will be good. im gonna test drive a 2017 tomorrow
Hi Alex, could you please tell us what you think about Nissan's 5.6 V8?
being completely honest I don't know much about them. I have heard they are hard on fuel but from a reliability stand point I'd have to do some digging!
That 20 mpg applies to 2% of drivers who never go over 45 mph lol
12:08 That’s because he has no idea what he’s talking about. The internet is an amazing place where you can research any topic (regardless of how complex it might be) before posting something on it. MTS is BY FAR the most important feature on the trd o/r or pro.
I'm not really a bush guy, but I don't judge!
Articulate and informative. Thanks.
6:10 no you can't dent it with you fist bro smh watching too much anime
12:03 the owner says multi terrain select is useless....but he's also never used it...tf?
You should try a Power Wagon.
The long bed 4x4 double cab is better than short bed.
"Splitter?" Air dam?
pro is like $10,000 more for no reason, trd off-road has the rear locker, and access cab version. way to go for sure. Also hurry and get one before the '24 version comes out. '24 version is a turd
Quick question. Is the owner your friend and buddy? You should try to mention that a hundred times if he is.
Did you really say that a ram 2500 is more off road capable then a Tacoma? 😂
Yeah, that comment had me cracking up. I can't see any scenario on any terrain where a 2500 dodge would out perform a Tacoma off road.
I'm a diehard Chrysler fan but that's a ok truck
😂Lol
The Tacoma is NOT a "heavy duty" vehicle. Heavy duty is 3/4 ton and up. That means Ram or Chevy or GMC 2500/3500, or Ford F-250/F-350 or above. This is a LIGHT DUTY vehicle i.e. half ton. It's equivalent to Ram or Chevy 1500/Ford F-150. If you're confused look at other auto makers naming, Chevy/GMC even has HD in the name for 2500/3500 but there is no HD in the name for 1500.
I think he knows that...
🙏🙏 Thank you Jon
the Tacoma is a mid sized truck. what i was getting at is the payload numbers.
Ram way stronger.
good to know! It did seem like alot of weight for a smaller truck
This guy is really comparing the Tacoma w his powerwagon 🙄🙄🙄🙄
I really like the taco , if i wasn't married with kids i would have gone with that.
Size is a big issue I guess. I did notice getting into the truck from my RAM it's like getting into a car. the interior is small.
Married men are allowed to buy tacomas. Just tell your woman you’ll let her drive it when she needs it.
@@tohloc well that would be nice but i got a power wagon instead, it fits the kids lol
@@davidmopar8446 right on
Love the Tacoma … but hate how limited the models and options are .
There almost 40 different trim levels (models be options)
I have a 2022 Tacoma TRD Off-Road, 4 Door Cab, Manual Transmission, Short Bed, sitting in my driveway.
@@georgedreher2322 are you in the US ? Here in Canada that truck is not available. But you can get a sport with a manual. Why not a off road. Seem ridiculous
how interesting..i just sold my 2020 trd off road tacoma and got a 2022 power wagon level 3!!
lol Well they are both pretty cool trucks. lets not get crazy here the PW level 3 is much more capable. but for a little truck it does well!
My Jeep is 80:1 low crawl ratio
Ram has coils, taco has leaves in the rear
i wonder if i could put a taco in the bed of my powerwagon and go up a hill.....ill be back with the results
lmaoooo. I mean in reality you could probably put the Taco on a trailer and pull just about anywhere. On the flip side the Tacoma ain't pulling the PW anywhere.
Idk about a power wagon being more capable 😬
Can we get an "ahm..." counter 😅
Spec the truck with a manual and it gets 4.30 gears!
did not know that! that's pretty cool actually, 4.30 gears are aggressive. good for Toyota
Access cab 4 x 4 is a four-door, suicide doors
You can only access the rear of the cab after you open the front doors so, no, the “Access Cab” is not a four door.
That exhaust is hanging way too low.
🔥👌💪👍
@@GettysGarage The Ranger Tremor package is quite a nice competitor to it. Priced competitively too. Okay man thanks look forward to it. 👍
I run BFG. M T. LAST GOOD. AND I LOVE UM. !!!!!!! IF U GET STUCK LOL. U ASKED FOR IT LOL LOL 😊😊
I want to see you put a dent in the skid plate with your fist!! It's steel, not aluminum- good luck!
