Robot Underdog is creating a Fan Made, Non-Profit, Pilot Episode for a Live-Action Dragon Ball Z Web Series! The storyline will be an adaptation of "The History of Trunks". We plan on bringing the Dragon Ball world to life in a way that's never been attempted before while still staying true to the characters & the story. All of our Dragon Ball Z content is purely conceptual material made for fans, by fans and it is not for commercial use of any sort. It is our goal to be able to use the pilot episode & all of our materials as a pitch to get the rights for the rest of the web series or potentially larger projects. The most amazing thing for me there, is how non-ridiculous this look. Even Gohan's clothes aren't out of place, even Trunks' purple hair! Everything looks faithful without being too cartoony or saturated.
I may say, Super Saiyan Gohan looks fantastic and I really wish we could see it more.

Why do people keep talking shit about the choice of actors? In reality, saiyans aren't human so it shouldn't matter what ethnicity was chosen for their portrayal. Asians just look the most similar to them so it is somewhat accurate I suppose.

Just know the majority of us truly respect and understand what you guys are doing and what I have seen is by far and away the greatest live adaptation of Dragonball I hope more great things come for you guys after this and you guys keep spoiling us with more and more Dragonball and maybe even other Anime content.

Now, I am not here to start a comment war, or anything, or to piss people off. This is just my opinion, and the opinion of some others. While this looks good, and I may consider watching this when it comes out. There are 2 things that I find annoying about making a live action film of a anime, Dragonball in particular. 1. No matter what, people will get mad over what race the characters are. For example: Goku. While it is implied that his appearance is that of a average saiyan, we only have humans to portray his role. But the question is, what should that male actor be? White, Asian, Mexican? There is a valid argument that Goku should be played by a Asian, simply because DragonBall is from Japan, and that he is based off of a legend. There is also a valid argument that Goku should be portrayed by a white male, because of his build, height, and the fact that some characters in dragonball are drawn with "squinty eyes", and Goku is not. This contradiction leads to many arguments, and are ultimately answered by this: "Goku, is what you see him as. Your friend sees him as a truckican (excuse my pandoran), your dad sees him as an Asian, and you see him as a White guy.". This often solves arguments. But this is totally blown out of the water when a live action film comes to play. This is one of the key reasons of why Evolution sucked.
2. Krillin, Tien and Piccolo are HARD to have in an live action show. Imagine Krillin in real life. Yea.....
Again, one of the reasons evolution was hated, is because piccolo looked like a "Shit I took, high on LSD" -John lennon
If these characters are left out....then....well... it wont be as good. We need more distructo disk in life....

There are some reasons as of why this guys at RobotUnderdog decided to take the Trunks story out of the sagas, it is the most ''realistic'', it is the most human, and does not have those characters that may require tons of money invested on CGI to be put on film. These guys were using their heads. And take a look at that spot on acting. Even if the project may not have the greatest special effects (this is only if...) on the episode release, that acting and the dialogue that they included alone speak for the quality of the guys scripting this.
A no my friend, Goku not being asian was not one of the main reasons why Evolution was soooo bad. Just check the ''Honest trailer'' here on youtube for DB Evolution and you WILL see all the reasons why it Sucked with capital s.

I can get what you're saying. I have hopes for this production. I will admit, bringing anime to life - especially Dragonball Z is a task easy to mess up. Piccolo, Tien, Trunks are just examples of characters that aren't realistic. They exist in the animated world for more than one reason. Already I can tell, however, that this will be better than that dragonall evolution ...thing lol.
WSBZ01 I saw the "Cinema sins" for it. While not mentioned in the video, the comments section is raging in debates for it. I also agree, the androids saga is a very good time in the plot to do live action, since there wouldn't be as much CG needed. To be honest, I thought this trailer looked great.

It never ceases to amaze me how much better low-budget fan works are constantly turning out than the big-budget Hollywood productions. This is the kind of thing that happens when the people making it actually CARE about the source material and are fans themselves, as opposed to the people making the "professional" bullshit who openly don't even like the source material and think they're doing the world a favour by changing everything and say things like "Now fans won't have to be embarrassed to admit they like this product."
Not many people can pull off an authentic looking live-action Super Saiyan. You guys are doing it right.

Given that they are basing it on the Frieza Saga, I think it's going to be a much more difficult undertaking than what RobotUnderdog is doing. Considering the budget involved I'd say you guys did an amazing job with this. I stumbled across this trailer by searching Dragon Ball Z Frieza's Resurrection and being led to Imdb which inb turn led me here, so, the search engine may help to get significant views as well. This could be the beginning of an interesting niche in low budget Anime film-making, which I fully support. Everyone expects multi-million dollar budgets drenched in cgi and such, but I can still appreciate a film based on story and pure entertainment alone. Anybody attempting to create a live action DBZ film is going to struggle because it just doesn't adapt well, so I'll take what I can get...

For those confused, this is the Trunks storyline from Future Trunks' perspective. When you watch the show and Future Trunks intervenes with the "present," this is where he came from. So everyone is already dead from Goku to Vegeta and many more. I wouldn't be surprised if in the end there is no "good guys winning" conclusion. That instead, Gohan dies protecting Trunks so Trunks can escape. Not a bad angle to make a DBZ film from.

nathan dixon we did an indiegogo campaign back when we first started but we were really short on our funding goal. thats why it took a little longer than we wanted to get all of the pilot shot.
RobotUnderdog2 I see. Well if the pilot is as good as it looks from the trailer it'd probably be easier to attract people to back the project. At that point there is not a whole lot of mystery and you'd probably have less people on the fence about it. Anyways just my thoughts on the matter. Good luck and can't wait for the release. Already have like 10 friends that are waiting impatiently for the release of part 1.

This Trailer alone is OVER 9000!!!!!! Times better then the whole Dragon Ball Evolution Movie, and I am Shocked to be reading as many bad comments as I am. I know were all true DBZ fans here but dang don't talk down a such a great opportunity to have an amazing web series. Give it a shot, I think this looks amazing, the casting is on point, and the visuals are astounding. Even more so when you take into consideration they probably have limited funding and resources..... and on that point, just to reiterate, it already looks better a lot then Evolution, lets at least agree on that. And with supporting fans it can be even better.
Obviously the actual episode will some how be even better than this so watching it might make my head explode.

This fan made show looks amazing! And the actors also fit the role and are brilliant. My only complaint is, shouldn't trunks be a bit older? Cuz this kid portraying trunks looks 10 or 11. I think future trunks is at least 15 or 16. But than again i may be wrong. Awesome job doe!
This was actually a main part of the real storyline. This is a different world where only gohan and trunks are left while the others Z fighters are dead. In this world, gohan dies. After his death trunks learns how to turn super saiyan and a few years later bulma makes a time machine which Trunks enters into present day in the actual time line where all the Z fighters are still alive. That's why Trunks knew so much about the androids.

Well I will say this, it doesn't look like Evolution so much so I have some hopes for this.
I won't lie, I like the animation and effects on this. I especially love the look of Android 17, the guy playing as him looks perfect. But I'll probably look forward to this the most because this is going over Gohan & Trunks, Gohan of which I especially love and the History of Trunks special that was always my favorite.

They said in their Q&A video that it would be up by the end of the year but strangely the year is over and still no 1st episode.
Ya know, despite all the unfortunate negativity towards this, I think it looks pretty damn good. Not only does the trailer look better than the entire Dragonball Evolution movie, that was a funded movie ... this is a fan made one. Truly, keep it up, huge effort! Looking forward to the finished product!

I like the actors of the cyborgs C17 and C18, their faces fit the characters from DBZ but everything else sucks... I don't understand why some professional film producers can't make a really good movie of DBZ, If you look at Marvel or DC movies, the special effects, the costumes even movies about transformers or some stupid ninja turtles exist and they're great. SO WHY CAN'T SOME PROFESSIONALS MAKE A MOVIE OF DBZ? P.S. I would even like if Michael Bay was the film director. He makes some good explosions... EVERYTHERE! xD

Yuri Boyka thanks man - we appreciate that. and it's not that we were "offended" its just that we want to spread awareness that if the overall consensus & attitude of the DBZ community is negative towards live-action DBZ we will never get a real movie. Even when Marvel & DC make really big screw ups - the fans are quick to give them another chance. But with DBZ -the attitude is so negative that any big studio would assess the market & immediately view it as a "bad investment". We have to change as a community first.
I understand what you mean. It's just hard to believe in something what was always screwed up. I mean look at Dragonball Evolution, it was a piece of crap. There were also so many attemps from other people to make a DBZ movie, some of them had potentials like you by making a trailer, but many of them promised too much. Maybe the comunity is just tired of being disappointed, that's why they don't believe in anyone. But don't worry ( I'm sure, you're not worried :D) than your movie comes out, the loyal Dragonball fans will watch it, they all will talk about this movie and catch the interest of the others. I can see the Light of Hope, if you know what I mean :)

If they ever make a reboot of the movie, then Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, Gohan and all the main saiyans should be Asian. Period.. why you say? Cause they are. This is the first of I've seen of this and it actually looks pretty sweet. I'm honestly excited see this. Great choice for Android 17, 18 nearly exactly how I would have pictured them if they were real.

All in all this is great. Their has been so many "live action dbz" shit, and this is the most accurate. The androids look amazing. This is based off of the history of trunks. I can't wait for the first episode.... Looks better than most Hollywood films. IMO.
