I absolutely loved my D1. It was a 1991 3 door manual, with the 3.5 litre V8 EFi. Fantastic vehicle. This video brought up fond memories of it. :-) Thank you for sharing.
I remember the 1989 launch of the Discovery like it was yesterday, despite only being 10 at the time. Can't believe that was 32 years ago. I think I've aged worse than alot of those well used early models too.
I feel like referring to Center diff lock that way instead of just calling it four-wheel drive and calling regular setting all-wheel drive is something that has made so many people think they have a diff lock as in axle diff locks. I'm like nope it's just regular four-wheel drive. So when you put a discovery into diff lock it's the same as taking a Jeep from 2-wheel drive into four-wheel drive you're just locking the front and rear axles together it's no big deal they make it sound special. I've literally heard people say I have a diff lock I'm like Oh you mean you have four wheel drive on your all-wheel drive and they're saying it to somebody who has a part-time four-wheel drive vehicle not knowing that when that one goes into four-wheel drive it's the same concept front and rear shaft lock together. The real pathetic things that Land Rover took it away for a while even though the transfer case still had it except for the 03 and the 04 actually came with it from Factory. Not having it from 99 through 03 made it seem even more special when you did have it or installed it LOL I'm like geez
Great video for any Disco fan. I recently resurrected a 98 from several years of slumber and couldn't be happier with it. I don't off road it much, but it is unstoppable in snow, and makes an excellent tow vehicle. It's also super comfy, has amazing driver position and visibility, and gets decent fuel mileage for a V8 4x4. Mine's a keeper.
I like discovery land rovers but all I see and hear are bad reviews about it '' mechanically '' . I heard they break easily and they are expensive to maintain

The reliability issues people refer to, are typically associated with bad modifications, and frequently people buying really cheap aftermarket parts and then claiming that Land Rover is unreliable. The Discovery 1, in my opinion, is the best 4x4 that has ever existed. It has that perfect blend of on road manners, off-road capability, comfort and amazing feel good factor when driving, and thats as a standard vehicle.

The gasoline discos here are known for serious electrical problems, transmission problems and even engine issues . Plus you have to take them to a dealer and they charge too much here in America . regular shop won't take the job . I like the look of the 90s discovery but I won't buy the gasoline ones .
@@robfoster8777 this is not true, you're talking about the Discovery 2 V8 4.6L - these D1's have a Buick 215 engine and GEMS system that couldn't be easier to maintain yourself, and for cheap. And not for nothing, but nothing drives more comfortably off road.
Loved my Disco l…with diffs locked it was a tank. Drove thru 3ft of snow often. It also was a great road trip vehicle too. 2 yrs of great experience followed by 2yrs of aggrivating ownership. When they start breaking the keep breaking 2014 4Runner owner now…same concept, better execution
You mean the one centered if just making it standard four-wheel drive as opposed to all-wheel drive on the street? Or did you actually have real axle diff locks? Because I hate when people refer to the center diff as a diff Locker when all it is is making you regular four-wheel drive. Meaning that your front and rear axles spin at the same rate but you still have open differentials for wheel spin right to left. That's like a regular part-time four-wheel drive just going into four-wheel drive from 2-wheel drive. Nothing special or unique about it. I have Center diff on my Discovery Series 2 but I don't refer to it as a lock I just call it four-wheel drive since when it's unlocked it's all-wheel drive and when it's locked it's four-wheel drive

So many people here diff lock and are under the impression that they have like actual differential locks like on your axles and I'm like know when a disco locks the diff it's going into four-wheel drive and normally it's just in all-wheel drive allowing for Street cornering which they like to call permanent 4-wheel drive it's just all-wheel drive same thing but with no electronics. So if anyone asks you if you have lockers and you only have a center diff lock say no you don't have lockers because a center diff lock it's just putting you into regular four-wheel drive. Every single part-time four-wheel drive that goes into four-wheel drive is locking the front and rear together when doing so that is nothing special.
@@ronaldrrootiii6040not really. There is a big difference between centre diff lock and most open diffs that other manufacturers have. Even the mighty land cruiser (80 series, 79 series, Kzj78, etc) don't have different locks apart from the 80 series VX trim in some markets, and even then, most only apply at low range. So no, it's not the same. Land Rover was actually quite superior in this respect. The series 2 discovery did actually lose the cdl yet it remained a 4x4 by use of a transfer case. Until 2004 when the cdl was reconnected from factory

A Jeep doesn't have it because the Jeep is not all wheel drive a Jeep is selectable when a Jeep locks the transfer case it's the same as a center locking diff

When you lock CDL it's 50/50 split front to rear the exact same as a selectable four wheel drive when they go into 4 high or for low. Awd lock cdl = 4x4 Selectable lock the case= 4x4. So when you lock CDL you are the same as a Jeep going from two-wheel drive into four-wheel drive except you started out in all-wheel drive instead of starting out in two-wheel drive there's nothing special about that it's just traditional four-wheel drive when you lock it

A bone stock Rubicon Wrangler is insanely capable literal rock crawler if you watch the Jeep Proving Ground videos. I drive a disco too but gosh it's just insane when I'm following a pair of jeeps and I'm doing the best I can and then they stopped to put it in 4-wheel drive cuz they were just two wheel drive high range utilizing a rear Locker on a level 7 ranked Trail... I'm like wow My Discovery Series 2 live CDL and traction control on 33s with sway bar deletes and these guys still have four-wheel drive high, four-wheel drive low and a front Locker. No kidding two-wheel drive first year with rear Locker doing stuff that was my maximum. And then you look at what the new Defender has become and everyone acted so surprised but really it's not a surprise you figure those Engineers that made the 80's and 90's Defender were long gone and they only kept producing it because they merely had the factory able to do so. Sad to think people driving like let's say a 2005 Defender sock that that was actually Land Rover still when really it was just a factory ran by company full of Engineers making the D3 & Beyond independent air suspension Terrain management vehicle we see today. So in hindsight yeah the new Defender wasn't a surprise. It's all the same Engineers they've had for a long time and I guess they just got tired of producing something that was designed long ago. Unlike the modern Jeeps that actually take their old school design and tweak it a little every year like sway bar disconnects and Dana 44 front ends. It's just pathetic. Yet I can't make myself by 1 because everyone has a Jeep Wrangler everywhere you go but nobody has a disco or disco Series 2 and that seems cool. If I can have my way I would put my Disco body on a Rubicon chassis and suspension when a Toyota iForce V8 and transmission haha just playing

Yeah the Wrangler is way better. Land Rover would have done themselves a favor if they would have copied Jeep in the last 15 years the way they did in 1949. Now for a 90s vehicle the discovery was pretty good as far as Flex. And a lot of these owners are weird as if they've never owned a part-time four-wheel drive vehicle before so they don't realize that the center diff locked it's just taking them from all-wheel drive into regular 4 wheel drive locking the front and rear axles together just like standard four-wheel drive. They get all excited and say they have diff lock like it's axle lockers LOL Still open diffs front and rear. Also the discovery Series 2 with with the aggressive traction control it came with and pretty wicked solid-axle Flex was very good for the early 2000's compared to even Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee as far as competition but when these guys especially the modern Rover guys try and think that they have anything against that Wrangler no way LOL now Land Rover it didn't stop making the previous Defender for the piece of crap Range Rover they call the defender then that would have been cool to see the previous-gen late-model defender with front and rear lockers. They act all surprised about the new Defender being such a piece of crap and I'm like look at guys the old one was produced identical aside from some Creature Comforts were produced the same for like 30 years so the engineers were long gone that wasn't really Land Rover that was just a Land Rover Factory I'm an old-school design still being made. The engineers that made the D3 independent suspension air suspension crap and up are the ones who made the new Defender. No big deal. It's just sad that the fans of the old Defender actually thought that that was still Land Rovers mindset and the factory was just still rolling with all the employees retired from that era
