    every Death song has a silver lining and a level of optimism in the face of human tragedy that other death metal bands often lack, which is why death and chuck specifically have attained legendary status

    I'm so glad u did this one! It's a great song, the lyrics are heavy af, the main riff is heavy af, the pre-chorus riff is heavy af, the chorus riff is heavy af and the middle part is just complete insanity. Maybe that's how you listen to these types of songs, like "damn this part is so cool, but wait for the next one". Like watching your favorite movie and waiting for your favorite scenes.

    Chuck's influences was around classic metal, POSSESSED, technical metal bands like Watchtower and some jazz

    • @somethingbl
      @somethingbl 2 місяці тому +3

      Chuck specifically listed in an interview in 1998: "I was musically inspired by bands like Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate, Metallica, Slayer and Queensryche. When Metallica’s first album, Kill ‘Em All, came out, it was one of the heaviest alongside Slayer’s first album. Then the term ‘Death Metal’ appeared in the media. Back then everything was a very intense, abrasive and aggressive form of Thrash Metal. "I see Death Metal as an extension and one passed beyond."

    • @dantredogborsa7048
      @dantredogborsa7048 2 місяці тому +3

      @@somethingbl "Schuldiner was originally inspired by Iron Maiden, Kiss and Billy Idol, among others. He was particularly interested in the metal movement known as NWOBHM - New Wave of British Heavy Metal - and cited bands of that genre among his favorites. He frequently cited French band Sortilège as his personal favorite metal group. Slayer, Possessed, Mercyful Fate/King Diamond and Metallica were later influences he would apply more to his own band. Later in his career, Schuldiner frequently cited progressive metal bands such as Watchtower and Queensrÿche as influences. Official Schuldiner website, Empty Words, quotes Schuldiner's mother making the claim that he enjoyed all forms of music except country and rap. He also apparently particularly enjoyed jazz and classical music in addition to metal and British alternative acts such as Lush".
      Kam Lee, origial Death's drummer: "I'll admit this, and I'll say this straight out, 'cause I know there's an argument all the time, who was first - was it Death or was it Possesed? Well, I will tell you Possessed was first, and I will tell you why. Because Chuck heard what Jeff [Becerra] was doing and Chuck wanted to emulate Jeff. I was there - I was there in the beginning.
      "There was times when we were living here in Florida before Chuck moved to California, and Chuck and I both started off as tape traders back in the day. And I remember, if you go back to before we were Death, we were called Mantas. If you look at some of the hand-drawn logos of Mantas, the Mantas logo, there's the logo with the devil's tail on it, on the 'M'. That's completely stolen from the original Posessed logo, the devil's tail."
      Jeff Becerra, from Possessed: "Remember, me and Chuck (Schuldiner, DEATH guitarist/vocalist) were friends. He literally was like my protégé. He moved out to Antioch (California from Orlando); he lived at the house of the then-POSSESSED fan club president Krystal Mahoney. He was pen paling for a while and tape trading. And he very much modeled himself after me. I was so honored because, remember, I’m just a young teenager. But he was the first person to really get what we were doing, what I was doing, and he was the first person that really understood what it was about. And he was so smart that way because it was undefined and so hard to explain what it is, without putting rules on it, because the last thing you wanna do is put rules on anything and stifle it. But he would just grasp it; he loved it. He said, ‘Listen, Jeff. I sound just like you.’ And he was proud of that. And I was proud of him. And there was a bromance going there. It was a respect."

    Great video!! I enjoy very much of the insights from somebody with the classic music upbringing. As a European I would recommend to check Pestilence "Testimony of the Ancient" song "Land of Tears" for example or album "Spheres" (Pestilence later works especially song "Personal Energy" from album "Spheres") or the other bands like Cynic, Gordian Knot or Periphery to name just a few (they were established later in 90s and 2000s). I think there was a lot of bands at the end of 80s early 90s discovering their own style within metal genre. Also Chuck and Death toured in Europe so I would say that he was really absorbing what was happening on the trash, death metal scene in USA and Europe. His genius was to take all in and come up with Death progression over the years which we can hear in every single Death album. Again great video guys!! Thumbs up!

    The key to this influence question of Metallica vs Death is Slayer. Metallica wasn’t influenced by Slayer, maybe a little at most. But in a counterpart sort of way because they came out at the same exact time. But Chuck has said Slayer is one of if not the biggest influence on him. And Slayer is as close to death metal without being death metal as u can get. Crazy fast, evil, chaotic, technical, etc. Chuck just took all that and went further.

    Cannibal Corpse was actually from New York but relocated to Florida because there was a more vibrant scene. But yeah, Death was early in the scene. You also had Morbid Angel, Deicide and Obituary. Then Cynic, Atheist, and also Death after 3 full lengths started mixing in elements of prog rock and jazz and shit. I loved those death metal fusion bands. I had already been into Rush, Yes, and Genesis, then went into the deep end with death metal, grind, and later black metal so mixing it all together didn't seem weird at all. For further education Deicide would be worth checking out. Same with Morbid Angel. Suffocation would be educational. If you want to hear when the bar was raised and things really got crazy Human Remains still floors the shit out of me. The song "rote" from the Using Sickness as a Hero EP will teach you what you need to learn.

    Great song, although I'm waiting for a song from Spiritual Healing, my fav album. Enjoyed the discussion very much, it's always interesting when J gets into it. He didn't even complain about the double bass drums, which were used in only one part of the song, mainly, so I guess that helped, but you're doing it right, he'll get used to it ;)
    P.S. I think you meant Possessed there Richard, the first official DM album (they went more thrash after that first album), Possessed - Seven Churches (1985) (I know Death had demos on tape in 84, but they're that, Demos), and Possessed were not from Florida but from San Francisco/Bay Area. I guess that's why they dropped a bit of the DM from their next LP and their last release Eyes of Horror EP (that EP rips as all hell though).
