From his work in sepultura on the Quadra album especially to his Brazilian rudimentary sessions which are some of the most insane drumming you will ever ever see to his work so far in slipknot, he is without doubt the greatest drummer of all time. He can play any style which is insane in itself, he hits harder and more ferocious than anyone whilst keeping a flawless technique and his stamina doesn’t decrease. I saw him live with sepultura in a smaller venue and it was murderous, the power I felt was indescribable. These videos you see of him do not do him justice. He is another level.

He said that when he was a kid, he didn't have a drum kit, just sticks. He practiced with pillows, which absorb the shock instead of bouncing back. That made him double the effort for each stroke. When he finally got real drums, he just kept smacking them as hard as he did the pillows. This is from an interview in Portuguese he gave years ago.

Eloy really lives up to the high praise big named musicians give him. I think he's reaching into the "best drummer in the last 20 years" thing because he can play... Everything. Like from samba to metal, all technically well, all with good observations, all with power when power's needed, speed when speed is needed, etc. And he really just does a good job.

He's able to channel the same creative energy Mastodon pulled the song from and capture the spirit of the song which is SO much harder to get right. You need to feel and tap into the mindset and what Mastodon feel like writing and playing the song and sort of retroactively get in the room with them doing it and that makes Eloy an artist's artist through and through.
