    Hello Everyone!
    So I was going to create another follow up video after the major updates but there wasn't many changes that I discovered and the major changes aren't being consistent so I didn't want to put out a video and have it be wrong. There was also just another update that seems to have broken my testing results even more. This is good because it means the developers are working on the building system to improve it, but it means older worlds might not work correctly.
    2 Possible Updates
    Update #1: Wall material no longer matters!
    In my testing no matter the material the wall/column is made of the floors will extend the same distance.
    This means that only the floor material matters, with granite and wood both being the best still and very similar.
    In my old campaign world this would break on occasion reverting back to the old build system, I did not notice it break in new worlds
    Update #2: Height no longer affects structural integrity!
    No matter how high you build, you can build the same distance out from a wall.
    This one was breaking often in my old world but not always, most commonly it would break when I didn't play the game for a while and signed back in.
    I was unable to replicate it breaking in new worlds so if it is happening to you, you might need to pack up and create a new world.
    Mini Update:
    They did add in purely cosmetic items, these items have no structural integrity and do not affect the integrity of the floors they are placed on.
    This video and the second one ( ua-cam.com/video/NNn00qiZ300/v-deo.html ) still cover the basics of the building system so I didn't want to create a new video repeating the same things. If you would like me to create 1 big video combining the first 2 and the new updates let me know.

    Very useful, thank you!!
    P.S. the area covered by your hearths is also vertical, so if you manage to put a hearth higher, you benefit from up AND down building space.
    If you are in a cave it's easier because you can build quick platforms going away from the wall and build a hearth there.
    Then build everything the way you want to (floors/foundations, pillars, walls, stairs, more floors, etc.) and once that's done if your hearth was not exactly where you wanted it or you don't want it on a platform, you can deconstruct it and place it again.
    Just be mindful to place it again somewhat in the same place if it's a stone hearth, so that it covers the same area again. But if it's a tiled hearth, there are less risks that the walls won't be covered by the hearth area.
    FYI, I found that out early in the game, but no one touched that subject yet I believe: if you build hearths that overlap each other, the furthest hearth area will have access to the resources stored in the very first hearth area.
    It's very useful in the vertical spaces (going down the mines of moria shaft after the elven quarters, and the crystal descent).
    There seems to be a limit however, I'm not sure what it is exactly, I started experimenting down in the Lower Deeps.
    I built a base at the bottom of the Crystal Descent in the 3 little caves there, with a Tiled Hearth in the middle and I thought I was safe in those little caves behind walls, but if the hearth area doesn't cover the whole cave, "under siege" goblins can spawn there, in your base. So I placed a stone hearth at the end of the each cave, and I haven't had any problems since -- only attacks are from bats that are above the pit, which is minimal. But I guess I could build floors to use as roof if I wanted better protection...
    So in that small area, I have a tiled hearth in the center and 3 stone hearths in each little cave, plus another stone hearth near a dirt tunnel I dug out going in the next section, then I placed a door there.
    My next zone is also a small square on the map, and I have 2 tiled hearths somewhat off center, to reach all sections of the area, then a stone hearth near another tunnel I dug out, where I put another door. I don't need the stone hearth to cover that area, but I put it there to give more reach to the next zone on my map, which is a bigger square (first actual part of the Lower Deeps, I believe?)
    Now in that zone, I built a tiled hearth where there's an existing house foundation with barely any walls left, and also a stone hearth at the top of the existing dwarf building ruins on the left, then a few stone hearths in the walls where I mined some ore, then two tiled hearths further.
    Now my two last tiled hearths don't have access to the resources from my 1st camp.
    Not sure if it's because it's reached the max distance, or if it's because they're between two different named zones (crystal descent vs. lower deeps), or if the big area is just too big to render accurately while still connecting to the first 2 small areas. My seems to have quick sound + image hiccups when I get from somewhere else into that zone.
    Another explanation could be that my furthest tiled hearth was made into a camp (with a bed) early on, so it recognizes both as separate camps. But I did deconstruct both the bed and tiled hearth there and rebuilt the tiled hearth without the bed, and it still won't connect with the 1st camp's resources. Same for the last tiled hearth before reaching that one, which leads me to believe it's either max distance or different zones.
    I will continue experimenting and report later on if you want.

    • @emberplays8634
      @emberplays8634  Рік тому +2

      I will have to experiment with this, I honestly experimented very little with the Hearths.
      We just reached the larger open zones so there was never really a need for multiple hearths but I will definitely play around with them.

    • @emberplays8634
      @emberplays8634  Рік тому +5

      Kind of. There is definitely a thought out building system with rules and restrictions, it is just very basic and isn't entirely necessary to build a complex base to play the game.
      During my streams I've mentioned how after they fix up the bugs and do their quality of life fixes I hope that they create an open world mode (similar to 7 days/Valheim), where the world is entirely randomly generated and it is a pure survival game. The base game is well enough built that I think they could easily manage something like that. If they don't I unfortunately don't see the game having a long life beyond the first playthrough.

    Overall neat video. Learned some stuff I didn't know and likely wouldn't have discovered on my own. I do have a couple observations to make though.
    Wouldn't wood have the least amount of durability of the three when being attacked? Thus, the trade off and the reason for differences. You get an easier time building, but it would be weaker to damage.
    And a logical reason for the bigger tiles overlapping and still working over the smaller tile is that the anchor point is closer to the support point and also counts all the connections for its support as well.

    You can improve the vertical stability if the wall or floor is close to a permanent rock wall or for example those giant whote pillars in this area. Connect a block or barrier with the wall/floor and push it into the permanent wall. You can place pieces easier inside walls by standing sideways to the wall.

  • @Seehron

    Thanks, the foundations spawning into my second floor tiles are the most annoying thing for me.
    I managed to break some floors & walls and roofs in a pre-existing dwelling by deconstructing scaffolding (so I could reach the higher places) after I was done hammering it into shape.
    Now I know to replace the ground floor tiles so there is a foundation below.
    I have yet to see proper roof tiles, or the standing lanterns (not the sun lamps!) in the build menu, also missing the narrower stair cases in both wood and stone type.
    I'm already at the end boss, here is hoping there is more building block unlocks with the last hammer.

    • @AxbeardXIII
      @AxbeardXIII 6 місяців тому

      @@Seehron an update has been released that provides roof pieces that work in combination with floor/ceiling tiles. If you use a floor/ceiling tile and it creates a foundation block you can use the X key (on PC, not sure how it works on PS5) to “deconstruct” the foundation, leaving the floor/ceiling in place.

    • @emberplays8634
      @emberplays8634  4 місяці тому

      I'm assuming this is happening when you are loading into the world or after sleeping?
      I'm not really sure, if you are in an older world I think it is broken with the newer build system. When I was testing out the new material in our world we had at launch, every now and then everything would collapse. I never saw it in a newer sandbox world but I didn't test much in there as resources were harder to come by causing me to have to move materials from one world to another.

      @@emberplays8634 they updated some building stuff in the same update that Sandbox Alpha was released. It included significant improvements to “building stability” and also added more build pieces, including furniture and lighting. There is another large update scheduled for “Fall 2024”. This update will include the Steam release (and likely Xbox release), as well as Sandbox release on PS5. It will also include general game updates/improvements. I know when I try to add say walls or doors or anything on an existing house the new stuff just doesn’t want to snap to the old. Id love as a long term project to go through and rebuild all the old houses and keep the same existing design but I just end up destroying so much of it I basically just have to rebuild the whole structure which defeats the purpose of what I’m trying to do

      I attempted to build off an old structure with our second base but similar to what you ran into things weren't snapping correctly or being structured correctly so I ended up just breaking what was there and building my own.
      This was before I started the experiments into the system for this video so it might be possible but I think preplaced structures use a different dev build system. In our final base I went through and tried to tear everything down for resources and space and some of the pieces weren't even able to be broken.

      As long as you built it, finding and repairing things found in the world works differently, it is supposed to give all materials back. Not sure if it has changed, haven't played it in a few months, but fast traveling uses food, exhaustion, and advances time. This means you either need food on you or to make more, makes you need to sleep more often, and having to deal with darkness more. They both have their pros and cons. Also early on black diamonds were much more rare in early builds, again unsure if this has changed with updates.
