That fight which could've been made into an entire Metal Gear spin-off title with different Metal Gears from different times and different loadouts clashing on the virtual battlefield... Ah, how unfortunate Konami are utterly brainless.
Tbf, the said Rexes were not the real thing, but an attempt to replicate. You can't make a proper second Rex without Hal, that's why Rex here still have a chance to crush Ray.
I really like the symbolism and imagery behind the Metal Gears, and it makes that eventual moment in Revengeance feel so much more powerful. These are two man-made beasts, one an old near extinct breed and the other the cutting edge of modern technology. When used to their fullest potential, they can obliterate entire cities more efficiently than a nuclear bomb. But at their core, they are animals; fighting for survival. Ray symbolizes the hunter, looking to gather what scraps it can for its pack so they can survive another day; just as killing Snake will prolong the Patriots' plan until someone steps up to take his place. Rex represents the endangered species, simply fighting for its life under threat of extinction; just like Snake and the Metal Gear franchise as a whole, battling constant opposition despite nearing the end of their own natural lifespans. It's then poetic that Raiden kills Ray on his own as the tutorial for Revengeance, as nature and warfare constantly evolves to produce new predators to hunt the old. Even today we see the nature of warfare shaken when the effectiveness of NLAWs and Javelins were proven amidst the Russian invasion of Ukraine, shifting the power dynamic of warfare to focus more on the infantry instead of the tank.
I agree with your comment except for the last point. Warfare always prioritised infantry, the piss poor performance of russian armor is the result of general russian incompetence
Holy shit that's a good way of thinking of it. Raiden suplexing a Ray is like an infantryman firing a Javelin at a tank. Both the Ray and the tank are devastating when used to their fullest potential, but that doesn't mean they're impregnable. Even a single infantryman - or cyborg ninja - can take them out, so both have to constantly fight for survival. And both become less than effective when used improperly and incompetently.
@@nexshrive2163 Raiden is a hunter, and the ray is becoming obsolete, becoming prey that has to do its best to survive or face extinction, representing metal gears as a whole.
Ray isn't something like rex that at the point of extinction (this part is my opinion) maybe desperado somehow makes other MG rays think all other rays are dead
Love or hate that game, but can we just agree that no one expected to be able to pilot the things we've spent five games destroying? Ray jumping out of the water and sliding along is, I think, a reference to how the Hygogg in 'War in the Pocket' jumps out of the water during the attack on the shuttle, they've even both got big ol' shoulderpad thingies.

Even in Rex's damaged state, it still whoops Ray's butt, which was meant to destroy Rex in the first place. Really shows that Otacon completely over engineered the thing and was so extremely powerful. Imagine they had been mass produced and bad guys had gotten a bunch. Scary thought. Good thing its only a video game. I'm currently building the Kotobukiya model of Rex. There really is so many parts to this thing.
The entire premise is absurd because RAY was specifically designed to hunt down and destroy Metal Gears including the older REX. One of it's shinning feature no one Metal Gears but RAY had was it ability to be fully amphibious, with the ability to quickly traverse through continents and intercept any opposing forces with their Metal Gears.
I find it cool how Rex’s design was all blocky most likely due to the ps1’s limitations, yet it still looks incredible in this game with some adjustments that don’t drastically change it. Really shows how impressive the designers of Rex are.
I can only imagine the amount of maniacal laughter that being able to pilot a Metal Gear against a Metal Gear must have unleashed. Seriously, some real-life villain will look fondly back on when they first got a taste of robot-on-robot carnage. Not even saying it's a bad thing!
By the way, those are mostly real weapons REX is armed with. It's two 30-mm GAU-8 cannons (same ones used on the A-10), a rack of Hellfire anti-tank missiles - specifically, the extended-range, laser-guided (as opposed to fire-and-forget) variant, potentialy with a fragmentation sleeve and inertial measurement unit upgrades, intended for UAVs - and a free-electron laser version of the already-existing deuterium flouride-pumped Tactical High Energy Laser; how the last one works, I have no clue, because chemical lasers are not free-electron lasers.
First time I played this Masterpiece I was not expecting to control Rex...and Battle against Ray was probably the most epic moment in gaming history. Snake ate Metal Gears for breakfast, he destroyed Metal Gears as infantry soldier, so what Ocelot was hoping to do against the greatest Metal Gears Killer who was controlling the Metal Gear Rex 🤣 Best game ever!

@@bodington-hahaha holy fuck what an underrated comment
"Nyeheheh, HEH, MUAHAHAHAHA"
It even says in rules of nature that ray is supposed to be hunter and raiden is the prey or that is what desperado thinks

Even better, you're using a Metal Gear to fight another Metal Gear, with the latter DESIGNED to have an edge over yours.
This was a crowning moment in the entire saga, hands down.

I love how in Metal Gear Rising it says that the cyborg bodies from this era are pretty much obsolete, and then you have Raiden pulling stuff like this 8:20
Raiden is a giga chad
well if MGS4 takes place in 2014, and MGR in 2018, ig we truly see how much cyborg technology has advanced with Raiden's suplexation of an entire metal gear four years after he simply buys time for Snake to escape (which ofc is a big thing in and of itself)
The og rising made by kojipro was supposed to take between mgs2 and mgs4 so if we going in hard canon mode the mgs4 robot body is far superior
Finally getting to pilot a metal gear in a metal gear game has got to be the most metal metal gear moment ever in metal gear.
I love the trope of using the old villain (in this case Rex) on are side to defeat a greater evil (Ray/Liquid)
Such an amazing boss fight not only one of the biggest highlights of mgs4 but the series as a whole.
Ray jumping out of the water and sliding along is, I think, a reference to how the Hygogg in 'War in the Pocket' jumps out of the water during the attack on the shuttle, they've even both got big ol' shoulderpad thingies.

Solid Snake piloting a Metal Gear to fight another Metal Gear was the crowning moment of the franchise

Snake: "Ah man, my shoulder is absolutely fucked."
Liquid: *Pretends to die on the ground and gets up* "Neener neener neener!"
Snake: "Oh yeah!?" *Somersaults out of Metal Gear Rex onto shoulder* "OH GOD THAT HURTS SO MUCH!!! Why did I do that? Why didn't I just do a normal jump and land on my feet???"

Titanfall 2 begs to differ
@@punchoponcho5238 I said objective not subjective
@@VegaFic I prefer both Titanfall 1 titans and the metal gear rex. Both reek of gritty militarism and I love it. They're both far more capable then there mass produced follow ups. Ray and Titanfall 2 Titans flop because they not only went all in on science fiction, overly complicated designs but also specialized them.
@@VegaFic It can go like this, who would win a ogre titan from the first or a scorch Titan from the second? The answer would be the ogre. Ocelot is jobbing on purpose. He kinda needs Snake alive to do his thing. Doesn't mean he can't have fun.
The final battle against Ocelot was epic.
But THIS should have been the final boss.

This whole chapter was just a roller coaster of emotions.

The entire premise is absurd because RAY was specifically designed to hunt down and destroy Metal Gears including the older REX. Poetic, no?
There's an Electric Oxygen Iodine Laser IRL. Probably a hyrid on the REX too.

I can't even fathom the physics of how the sub decides that it can push aside the concrete dock, but all of a sudden Raiden standing in the way on said dock somehow stops it.
