I've already seen Taxi Driver. Watched it a long time ago and it's one of my all time favorites. I also love King of Comedy which Joker took a lot of inspiration from.

Like what? There's not an original bone in this film's body. You can argue that every movie is inspired by something else, but this doesn't even do anything new or interesting with its inspirations. It's aggressively shallow, with a script that felt like it was written by an edgy teenager. The cinematography, while competent, is basically just riffing on 70's crime cinema. Honestly the only aspect of the film that actually manages to stand on its own merits is Hildur Guðnadóttir's score.

It's the equivalent of someone saying "Man I can't stand childish shit that doesn't take anything seriously! But that new season of My Little Pony though, that shit's amazing."
I'd say the Rami films are more goofy than cheesy and like Alex previously said, goofy has had a negative connotation built around it when it's not necessarily always the case.
Opinion: Well...that's because the first two Raimi films had a great storyline that tied up character developments and plotpoints. Joker is a film where a sad man becomes a killer, with a predictable script. There's always a film that comes around saying authority is bad and stirs up controversey. Joker is nothing special. In the 70s there was Taxi Driver. In the 80s there was King of Comedy. In the 90s there was Falling Down. In the 2000s there was too many films to count. And the 2010s had Joker. It's the equivalent of a slap to the face. It wakes people up, and they go back to sleep. (Spiderman 3 did suck though).
What's wrong with being cheesy and dramatic? Spider-Man's life in the comics is akin to a soap opera, full of surprising and enthralling twists and turns, and the Raimi movies accurately depicts that.
Joker was a MASTERPIECE! That ending changed the whole movie like holy shit

@@rodolfourive7944 Yeah like Batman mentality in Bruce being born when he watched his parents die was at exact time when the Joker inside Arthur Fleck began to rise.
I disagree about your whole “nothing new” thing. But respect.
The Initiative I actually disagree with hitop on this one because the whole T W initial twist made my jaw drop and all the twist just added to the mystique of jokers unknown past nothing is fully for certain in this movie.
Well if you watch movies like taxi driver, king of comedy and even the mechanic you Will realise joker Is not the most original movie ever made. Its like the people who use to said how much original Matrix was until they saw movies like ghost in the shell, dark city and some twilight zone episodes ... Its not a bad thing having inspirations Is just that saying that Is something Is new and never done before its an overpraise , but i can tell you this in the real of cómic book movies this Is new an risky compare to 90% of the superhero movies now days that care More about making a cinematic universe . The first Superman movie wasn't a set of the justice league and the first Batman movie wasn't a set of Flashpoint Paradox they were just their own movie.
@@motor4X4kombat I've seen those movies (Taxi Driver, King of Comedy, etc), and I think Joker does a lot of new things by comparison that have never been done. In addition to multiple unique and original plot points, the themes and messages of Joker are different than in Taxi Driver and King of Comedy. Those films were very focused on individual issues: Taxi Driver was about mental health, and King of Comedy was about celebrity worship. And while those themes do exist within Joker, Joker also offers a more precise, and scathing social commentary on our specific political era over the past few years. Moreover, the Arthur's journey through the film is poetic and meaningful and entirely its own thing.
Don't get me wrong, Joker definitely takes inspiration from those films. But like you said, taking inspiration from something doesn't make you unoriginal. Lastly, even you admit that at the very least "in the realm of comic book movies this is new and risky" because this (R-rated, stand-alone, Oscar worthy villain film) has never been done before within this genre either. Heck, I think Joker owes just as much to Logan and Deadpool as it does to Taxi Driver and King of Comedy.
@@motor4X4kombat "Joker" is somehow original because the whole movie is told by his point of view. We were in his twisted mind the whole time through music, frames, direction, use of lights and shadows, use of colours, the switch between scenes and his interaction with the other characters that are in the story mostly as "plot device" to make Arthur's craziness and feelings more powerful. He was the only one at the spotlight because we were in his mind.

Thats the point tho at least in my opinion. This is all in the eyes of the Joker. Like this movie is supposed to be cliche and weird dialogue. This movie is all memories of the Joker the least reliable story teller.
It's kinda funny tho, how joker clearly doesn't care what his past was or what society thinks of him or how they treat him, he always seemed to just do stuff because he got a kick out of it. Yet even with this every time he talked about his past, and told a different story Everytime no less, he went for a bad past and they were very cliche and make believe stories, the joker movie seems to be the worst case scenario cliche the joker can dream up, it's like the joker studied the "we live in a society" meme and made up a story

The final joke was US. He laughed at us for sympathizing with him despite us knowing most of it wasn't even real. We believed a made-up story made by The Joker. I’m honestly anticipating Shazam 2 the most! DC’s been hitting home run on the small (Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing) and big screen (Shazam, Joker) lately, I really hope they keep it up.
I felt that keeping the story simple was perfect and that it felt like older masterclass films, I felt this movie broke much new ground and that it felt real, when Arthur gets beat up I believed that because this is the broken and twisted part of Gotham, the social worker felt real because in real life, when people ask you about your problems, no one gives a shit and they ask just to make themselves feel like they did something good. I had a therapist for awhile for reasons, but I never felt they actually cared about my problems, I was just another patient, (no I’m not mentally disturbed, just a tough time) but personal stuff aside this movie was beautiful, the cinematography, the acting, the score, and the slow building story was beautifully done. It might not be film of the year quality, but I am as encouraged as you are.
Just got back from theather. Joker is MASTERPIECE. This how you compete with marvel... By teeling a dark unique realistic story
...but everyone was complaining that DC was too dark.
You can’t do dark all the time though. This will get old just like Marvel movies
@@cryotek22 ur right but this is a great start
This movie has absolutely nothing realistic about it.
They wouldn’t let me in as I’m too young
I wouldnt let me in because i have no friends
F
Just go with an adult, easy peasy. The Movie Theatre workers 100% knew I was underage, but didn't bat an eye cause I had someone with me.
@Kritiko didn’t work for me
@@Phoenix-cd1nm Huh, maybe it's more strict where you're from.
I liked Joker
And I liked this review
cheers
The thing I loved about the music was the drums that played, like the type of drums that let you know this is all building up and that his mind is building and building with so much rage and craziness that it all comes together by the end and I love itt
I disagree with you. The script is amazing. Especially the late night segment. I respect your opinion cause I can see where your coming from. But this script in my opinion has alot of layers and it tells the story it wants to tell really good.
Its also confusing at times and I don't think the film itself has clarity on whether it wants to portray Joker as a good guy or a bad guy. But it's your opinion though
Damn the beginning of this video really shocked me tbh regardless im excited to watch the rest of it always a treat when hi top uploads
Watched it 3 times in theaters. Can't wait till I can see it again. I've never seen a character as real as Phoenix's character nor have I seen one with so much depth of emotion rolled into it. It was the hardest movie to watch, I was on pins and needles the whole time and my emotions were everywhere, constantly meshing together. I absolutely loved this movie!!
I definitely agree with him on the script. Tbh, I am fine with the story, I just hoped the dialogue would be better. I still love the movie though, they got so much right. It's in a way a testament to how good the other areas were, that the dialogue can be "meh" but the film still blows people away and hits hard emotionally.
Damn Alex hitting us with another high quality video just 3 days later
No 5/5 rating? This is proof that we gamers are oppressed.
that switch and bait tho. in all honesty. even though i disagree to some your statements. i enjoy seeing other people's perspective and opinion in a very constructed manner. keep it up with what you're doing Hi-Top.
so basically joker is like medicine for cinema it doesn’t always taste good but it’s important
I sorta do get where you’re coming from and I respect your thoughts on the film, but I think that it’s great with amazing art direction, cinematography, music, and yes... I think the screenplay is excellent.
It’s one of those films that I can’t stop thinking about, but at the same time feeling this weight of unsettling terror and stomach-turning when remembering what I saw. I haven’t felt this way probably since Foxcatcher.
Joker is a well-crafted film that is so disturbing, that I have this feeling of never wanting to watch it again, but also wanting to rewatch and solve a lot of unanswered questions.
It's like when Sony made the Emoji Movie, then Into The SpiderVerse
I guess you gotta make shit before you make something great
Raimi-verse Spider-Man
10000 hours rule
most importantly, we got quality memes from it.
“To manufacture controversy” 😂😂😂
Honestly I never saw a movie like joker. honestly, I felt like I liked it because it hits close. I was never middle class, I lived in an apartment like arthur did, I saw the streets like arthur did, I saw violence and crime, like arthur did. I understood why he's messed up and why eveything sucks. I've seen gang warfare all my life and politicians, police, and governments don't care. no one does. its when you hit closer to them when they take notice, it's when someone who is an upper class then us gets involved, when the media, both news and social, care. But that's just my take, maybe I'm too angsty
Joker is defo one of my top 10 favourite movies and ever thing Hitop is saying is all well and dandy but the reason I love this movie is because someone like this can actually EXIST in the real world and maybe already has, it makes me think about how the human society can drive a person mad with the overflow of negativity and how far that negativity can push them. I just fucking love it man
Sometimes i Remember it one way someTimes another if im going to have a past i Prefer it to be multiple choice
-joker
I'm glad we're finally getting a film that doesn't involve with Marvel or anything like that. I just wish that people would just calm down because it's a movie. It's not like it's gonna brainwash people who are dying to see this, unless they want to be.
Joker has always one of my all-time favorite super villains along with Venom. People are just salty because they don't understand all about the Joker. They just want to bother people and everything is too politically correct these days.
Therefore, I'm planning to either watch it tonight or tomorrow. I feel like this is gonna be great.
This movie was such a rollercoaster of emotions, it wasn’t like any other movie I’ve seen. I didn’t feel like I was watching a movie, it felt like an experience. Seriously, I thought this movie was incredibly thought provoking and it affected me quite a bit.
I really liked it. It was a critique on society but not in the way the media portrays it. It told people that they need to care more for their fellow man. Look after the poor, isolated, and defenseless in society. But on the flip side, don’t commit the sin of doing worse to people who have more than you because you have had it bad. It had a Tale of Two Cities vibe that really impacted me. However, Thank You for sharing your honest opinion, I do agree with most of it.
Gives me hope that they can keep allowing these more personal projects in recognizable franchises. Hopefully that kind of stamp of filmmaking can extend beyond the comic book lens and you could see in depth character studies of idk Spock or Cinderella or something lol
I think the Joker character is my favorite thing to come out of DC
I think the point was that we weren't supposed to know if any of what we saw was actually real. Joker always changed his origin, and I feel like this movie was a figment of Joker's imagination.
I think the movie partly serves as a meta commentary about the joker as a character in pop culture. He says several times that he has no real reason to be doing what he is doing but the crowds "or audience, writers, filmmakers" give his actions meaning which he in the end embraces, becoming the joker
Dude I thought I was the only one who didn’t like the dialogue and the cliche way things happened, I don’t love Joker, but I think it’s a really well made movie, and I want more movies to do different things like this.
