bwhahahahahhaha
+Sofi Beth (sofia delgado) lelelleleleleel
hankmillenium2000 ooooohhhhhhhhhh
+hankmillenium2000 Yeah, I had this thought, too.
+Sofi Beth (sofia delgado) can someone tell me what foreshadowing is?
+Sofi Beth (sofia delgado) When male rabbits compete for mates, though...
Judy Hopps: 'it's not like a bunny could go savage'
Me: tell that to several of those characters in this film.
hahahaha
😂😂😂
Yeah, stereotyping is wrong, as she learned the HARD way
Hazel was voiced by the late sir john hurt may he rest in peace
4:32 EVERYCHILD GOES SAVAGE!!!!!!!!!
4:35
I'm still laughing at the fact that ABC accidentally played this on easter
whats abc?
Skylooter what is 123?
+IAMV0ID what's Do-Re-Mi
True Blue productions what's red blue green?
LOL. Is there an article or something about that? I'd wanna hear how that went down for the network
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and your people will never be destroyed.
:')
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Yes, Lord Frith!
Very haunting and powerful words, Richard Adams wrote.
i always tell my rabbits that when they don't want to move their fuzzy asses back into their enclosure
Dae that's amazing XD
Ah, in the 70's, an animated film gets a PG because it has tons of scenes of violence and bloodshed. In 2016, an animated movie gets a PG because it mentions pee or has a fight scene. My, how times have changed.
Yeah, I still can't believe Nell and Doc Hollywood got PG-13 ratings. Those movies have a little more than "blink and you'll miss it nudity."
This is a PG?? Wow, shows how sensitive parents have become.
Alex Decourville Just goes to show how we've all become total softies throughout the decades
PG-13 came about sometime after temple of doom
It was rated a U
This film didn't traumatize me as a kid. It fascinated me as a kid. It's always been one of my faves. Thanks for covering it.
Agree I really liked it, Hazel was awesome and Kehaar saying 'piss off' was really enjoyable as a 9 year old
+Skyebright1 I didn't know when he said that in the movie, it wasn't until 100 greatest animated movie awards someone said Keehar said 'piss off'
amanogirl1 he says it to hazel I think, when they first meet Keehar and he's injured
Ruby Doomsday I found it when I was ten by getting the book for my birthday and I thought it was brilliant.
You weren't 4 years old when you first saw this.
Judy: its not as if bunnies can go savage
Watership down: Are you sure about that?
"Rabbits are supposed to be cute, meek and timid!" *quick flashbacks of some of the brutals moments of this film* Wait till you see Watership Down, folks. Trust me, you won't see rabbits the same way ever again
YuiHarunaAi Hoshiko Uruk I just watch review like this instead of watching it by myself and I’m already damaged.
Guess what/who I'm quoting; "Hey everybody, why don't we watch a movie about bunnies? Yeah, I'm sure it'll be nice and wholesome and cute and---" (Psycho's theme is playing a disturbing images from Watership Down is being seen.) "What the Fu--"
+Omnicidal Clown
Joshscorcher.
Clowns quoting other sadistic clowns.
(Joshscorcher)
What is JoshScorcher Omnicidal Clown
+Omnicidal Clown I know that quote well and I had to agree with Joshscorcher about it.
Josh scorcher
"Stay calm, it can probably smell fear" - Flynn from Tangled.
BTW, good luck with your review of Chicken Little.
I can already tell that Chicken Little will get the Animat Seal of Garbage.
+MegaSoulhero no shit CL along with HOTR killed Disney 2d animation
+Rob Bob After the Chicken little review, I would think that if he will review that Disney Knockoff from 1998 "Quest for Calmelot" next, oh boy, he will be ending up one hell of a ride. He will be ranting about the generic story, the hate able and dumb characters that where knockoffs, bland and forgettable songs that distracts the plot instantly (aka filler), and extreme comparisons from the film to Disney's Big 3 Hits of the Renaissance (or 4 if you count the little mermaid).
And here's a fact for you, Quest for Calmelot's Production was more brutal and extremley meddled than Richard Williams' Opus. I have a article at one of fanpop's clubs: www.fanpop.com/clubs/childhood-animated-movie-heroines/articles/251553/title/troubled-history-quest-calmelot
+MegaSoulhero It was a sad time for Disney. How did they go from Lilo & Stitch and Brother Bear, right straight to Home on the Range, Chicken Little and The Wild? Thank goodness that Meet the Robinsons broke their losing streak!
Meet the Robinsons? ugh.... don't get me wrong it was a good movie but it also was one of the many cgi hits that Disney made that killed any chance for 2d movies to be made. Disney or other company's. what we need is a good old fashioned 2d movie. with a dark plot. there's to much "happiness" in kids films theses days. i want another secrete of N.I.M.T.H. hunchback, i want a trauma inducing film. god im only 24 why am i talking like this!? it's true.
"My heart has joined the thousand, for my friend stopped running today."
R.I.P. John Hurt.
And Zero Mostel, Harry Andrews, and Richard Adams.
One of my favourite things about the film is that they don't talk like humans, they talk like what you'd expect a rabbit to talk like.
Thought after 6 years i'd give u an answer...
so here goes...
...er NO, they dont sound like wot you'd expect rabbits to talk like
OMG, the Monty Python reference killed me!
XD
Also, Chicken Little... ugh, Chicken Little.
Daniella Dahoui Chicken Little is just made of uhh....uhh.
I didn't think it was that bad. I used to watch it when I was a kid.
You know, two bunnies that roamed around the classroom in science in my school remind me of this movie. And one of their names is even Hazel!
When pronouncing Efrafa, the first syllable is stressed and not the second, as in the word "Majesty." As for El-ahrairah, it's pronounced "Ella-hrair-rah." Each syllable means a different word in the Lapine language. "Elil" refers to the enemies of rabbits. "Hrair" means "thousand" or "many". "Rah" is a sign of respect and often used when referring to a chief or one in a position of high power. El-ahrairah literally translates to "Prince with a thousand enemies" like Frith said in The Story of the Blessing of El-ahrairah. "El-ahrairah, your people cannot rule the world, for I will not have it so. All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with a swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people will never be destroyed."
Yeah I kept thinking that's not how Efrafa is pronounced in the film
+Skyebright1 The book actually tells you how to pronounce it. In fact, I explained it word for word how the book says to pronounce it.
Efrafa represented the soviet union
When it comes to movies being made from books the movies are almost never the same as the book. But I having read the book, which is awesome by the way, and seeing the movie these two are about as close together you can get. I mean WOW, the movie follows the book to an almost 100%. And what a great choice to have John Hurt as the voice of Hazel. That man's voice is pure gold.
Channel 5 aired this at Easter?
Oh those poor children...
I never saw this film growing up, I had The Animals of Farthing Wood for my Animal Game of Thrones quota, I don't need a second
+RiderNexus It did here, as I assume, I wasn't watching TV on the day. Headlines on FB showed me the amount of complaints parents had about it XD Evidently they'd not seen it either~
+Roadent1241 interesting
I watched both as a kid, I was into animal things and my parents just brought whatever fitted the bill I guess
Skyebright1 You poor soul
+RiderNexus I watched this when I was five didn't affect me, still doesn't to this day. Plague Dogs, and Animal Farm scared me, because when I watched the Plague Dogs I dreamt that it was my Yorkshire terrier being experimented on.
Just don't show it to kids! My mom made that mistake!
I'll never forget how mad my mom got at my dad for showing this to me at the age of 5.
The Poke'Saurus Same
How was he to know how violent this film was?
I got shown this at age 7, was my favourite animated film from then on
In Finland the movie got a PEGI 3 rating!!!
Just how? The finnish dub is great btw
The film is not for kids, but young adults and older. I saw it at about 15 and loved it. A true masterpiece that only Britain could have made. And you left out Art Garfunkel’s great score! _Bright Eyes_ is a beautiful piece...
Garfunkel didn't write the score. "Bright Eyes" is his, but not the rest. Angela Morley did the score, which I agree is excellent.
"When a rabbit falls in the hands of a prey"
Did you mean predator? Haha..
Nice touch with that Holy Grail clip at the end, Mat. ;)
I saw this movie exactly 15 years ago; it was the day before 9/11/01. Didn't remember much of the story, but when we saw the Twin Towers on TF1 (french TV channel), bursts of "Watership Down" came to my mind as I watch in frightened awe the destruction and panic in NY City.
Plauge dogs next?
Oh no, oh heck no.
+Fat Boy No even more Worse! It's Chicken Little
+Andrew Alderson no plague dogs is worst it's the same people who made Watership down for God sakes
+shelby ladra Sorry
+Andrew Alderson it's okay i don't want to get into detail with plague dogs it's just even more violently graphic and sad while chicken little was just disney experiment with cgi technology with a bad message, story and a bad character
Serious note, I hear a lot of people talk about how Watership Down gave them nightmares as children. I saw this as a child, and I was absolutely fascinated. I was too absorbed in the wonder of the story to be disturbed by the gore, which really surprises me. Then again, people said Mononoke Princess terrified them as kids, as well, and yet it didn't bother me.
I've only saw a couple of seconds of _Watership Down_ on Sky Movies. It was enough to make me repress those memories for almost 20 years.
Woundwort is one of my favorite animated animal villains, he's a savage
"It's not like a bunny could go savage.."
Oh Judy! Snowball has the same insanity as the bunnies in this film!
Wanna something that's even sadder than the film?
The author of the original novel, Richard Adams, has passed away several hours ago.
R.I.P., you talented man, your work lives on.
My heart has joined the thousands, for my friend has stopped running today.
If you think Watership Down is traumatizing, just watch Felidae or Plague dogs
The Plague Dogs is probably the tamest of the three. It's just depressing as all hell with some blood and psychological tension. Felidae, on the other hand, is the more brutal of the three. In fact, I'd go so far as to say you're a bad parent if you show Felidae to your children. The Plague Dogs and Watership Down could probably be shown to children if they're mature enough to handle it. Felidae deals with more adult themes like sex, murder, genocide, death cults, Tarantino level violence and gore, and a horrifying nightmare involving a priest and puppetstrings that would even scar fully grown adults for life.
+WhiteWolfSnowy yeah plague dogs and felidae are rightfully recognised as not kids films, it's just Watership down that still appears in the kids section of DVDs sometimes
+WhiteWolfSnowy While Watership Down is a family film neither Plague Dogs or Felidae were ever aimed at a child audience. Think Plague Dogs has a 12 rating and Felidae is a 15. So yeah, you are a bad parent if you show 15 rated films of any kind to your kids! Personally I wouldn't show Plague Dogs either, even though I personally grew up on Watership Down, love it and would happily show it to any child. Watership Down merely shows the reality of what the natural world is like and how humans behave in it in a non-condecsending way. Plague Dogs however I think is genuinally disturbing to some people because its about vivisection, which is very horrible and definitly a traumitizing concept which I think needs an older mind to properly reflect on to understand the messages of the film.
Plague Dogs is hands down worse, but for me as a kid being in love with the artistry of Beatrix Potter, I think this felt for me like watching childhood icons getting murdered in front of me. But Plague Dogs begins with a terrifying and disturbing experiment and ends with an equally devastating situation. Adams' eventually added a portion onto the book to give it a happy ending because he felt so much sympathy for the characters of Rowlf and Snitter.
This review was worth it. I was waiting this for so long. Thank you to whom recommended this.
A family picture? I feel sorry for those kids whose parents got tricked into thinking that this was a kids movie.....
What about things like Heavy Metal, Wizards, Fire and Ice, American Pop, Felidae and Ninja Scroll? or are those aimed at adults?
yeah i was watching this with my friend and his Father that thought this was a kid movie we were 5 and i coud not sleep for 4 months
Batman Forlife
What about those titles i mentioned even Killing Joke and Dark Knight Returns?
+Johnlindsey289 have not seen them whats it about i'm to lazy to look it up (^^)
I remember watching it all the time as a kid and loving it. It's one of my favorite movies of all time even if it's a little rough around the edges.
Honestly, I think Somebody NEEDS to make "Watership Down" a Broadway Musical!!! Think of all the potential it has, from its visuals, music, craftsmanship, and pretty much everything! A bit like if "Le Miserables" met "The Lion King". And the entire story (as Animat said) is Survival! PLEASE BROADWAY!!!!!! OR EVEN WEST END!!!!!! MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!!!
I hope someone gets him to review "Mary and Max". He talked about it in one of his episodes of a Lookback on Stop-Motion Animation
Dad made the mistake of renting this movie from Blockbuster when I was 5 to watch. Not even 20 minutes in I was crying and Mom ended up yelling at him for making me watch something so traumatizing. I think it shocked me so much that my subconscious erased it from my memory and I forgot 95% of it until I watched it again as an adult. It still scared me.
kirara2516 I sorta can relate
The next one is gonna be Chicken Little, isn't it?
Judy: it's not like a bunny could go savage
Me: I dare you to say that to Hazel or Bigwig
I remember Disney Channel used to show this one time. I saw it when I was 8. I had trouble sleeping for a week
I owned the video of this film, I think I watched it first at like 9, weirdly I actually really enjoyed it, probably due to Kehaar saying 'piss off!'
Well, lucky you.
I watched animal documentaries on Discovery channel and NatGeo and see animals get mauled all the time every since i was 5. When these characters go through that, it was quite scary for me.. weird
+Skyebright1 I enjoyed it two, my parents recorded it on VHS, but that got ruined (I recorded over it). Then got it on DVD, ruined that, then got it on blur Ray and it is so good on that.
Inera Belle About when did it was on Disney Channel? I don't recall ever seeing it on there!
I grew up on this movie! Watched it over and over.
Whenever a pet of mine has died I say "my heart has joined the thousand, for my friend stopped running today"
Ah...Watership Down & when the wind blows, both friendly innocent british classics suitable for children!
BE WARNED: When The Wind Blows ... will mess you up!!! (also David Bowie sings the opening :) )
Hazel is my #1 favorite character voiced by John Hurt #RIP
Still more child friendly than Where The Dead Go To Die
Yes! My favorite movie and book as a kid! I've always wanted to see him review it!
I'll never forget my dad renting this film and telling me, "This movie traumatized me as a child... I can't wait for you to watch it"
I love Watership Down
It’s one of the most beautiful pieces of animation I have ever seen, especially the background designs and I love the score. 10/10
I'm so happy you gave this film such a good review and enjoyed it! The first time I saw this film I was very young. probably around 6, to this day it's still one of my favourite animated films, if not my number one favourite, it has such a nostalgia for me I truly think it's beautiful. I'm surprised you didn't mention the music, a lot of it really gives me chills! And the ending always brings a tear to my eye
This was shown during Easter. I was 4...and it scarred me for life.
Speaking of traumatic cartoons, I suggest Felidae. While not being really a kids movie, there was no rating at the time and a lot of people, like me, had the luck to watch it as parents rented it!
Felidae is amazing :3
Is it weird chicken little was my fav movie as a kid?
I watched watership down when I was about 16 or so, so I was able to properly enjoy it without being completely traumatized
I remember watching this film in my Honors English class in 8th grade. I think we were doing some type of art topic (because I remember we also watched Spirited Away). It always stuck with me as a film, more for its... oddness rather than the gore or anything else. I remember the oddness from the movie made me want to read the book; I was finally able to read the book for a couple projects in high school, and it instantly became one of my favorite books. While you can look deeper for themes and such, I liked it how you can just take it at face value, and it just goes over the lives of these rabbits. It’s a great read.
“What? Behind the rabbit?”
“It is the rabbit!” YAAAAAAASSSSSSSS!!!!!
Full Voice Actor List

Check out Plague Dogs! It's very similar to Watership Down...Kind of XP And the same animation group worked on both films(and I believe the same directors and all, though I would have to check to make sure XP). I would definitely say Watership Down is better, but Plague Dogs is definitely a good movie.
Isn't it pretty much about dogs getting abused?
AVET87 the Plague Dogs is so much more than that. It's a satirical look on the media, politics, animal testing, and on the more literal sense it's another story about survival. However, in PDs case it's with two physically and psychologically damaged dogs who deep down want to trust humans, but can't in the end and must turn to feral life, all due to human nature. Unlike Watership Down, which ends up uplifting, Plague Dogs is tragic, and that juxtaposition makes these two stories, and Richard Adams, great.
Oh god, that's very depressing
I loved this movie while growing up. I remember it did traumatise me and my sisters the first time we watched it. But for some reason we watched it again, and once we got past the violent scenes, we appreciated the story. We ended up renting the movie countless times, and we even like to recite Keehar's (is that how you spell it) monologues for fun.
I have the DVD of Watership Down and I first watched it when I was 7...
I watched it alone in my bedroom...
multiple times....
thanks mom and dad
Oh god! Chicken Little! I'm sure he'll give it the Seal of Garbage.
This is like watching the death of Bamby's mother with all the blood and guts S for the entirety of a full length film.
I saw this at the tender age of 5. And I watched it with my mom. And I LOVED IT! As an adult I appreciate it even more. A polished hand -drawn reboot is more than welcome. LOVE THIS FILM!
A FAMILY PICTURE
spectacular! A pure hidden gem! I have to watch this.
When it comes to character development, i have to give the TV series version of the book credit.
We have Campion, he at first obeys Woundwort but as the series went on, he begins to question his Cheif's motives and morals, especially with that cruel Vervain hurting other officers or the captive rabbits of Efrafa. In season 3, his character development comes to full circle.
And that was why in the TV series, he's one of my most favourite characters.
How do you manage to make bunnies look creepy and unsettling? This is how.
I never heard of this movie until that Buzzfeed article came out about the scariest moments (or movies in genral) in animated films
"Richard Adams's" I l laughed to hard at that
When I first found out about this I was wondering "who would show this to their children?!" Still its a good film....despite it destroying another innocent image.
Still, there is only one film to date that I've found that comes close to the brutality of this. Felidae.
Warning: If you do review this, note that it is a German film but there is a English Dub version and because of a blatant mating scene. Thankfully there's only one.
yeah I guess your right
I watched Watership Down for the first time as a young child, it is not a bad film for a child to watch, it introduces a perspective of realism about our world but not in a way that I ever considered disturbing, I like how it approachs the natural world and how we humans behave in it in a way which isn't condescending to children. Felidae on the other hand is very much an adult film and has never been marketed for a child audience. While Watership Down has a U rating in the UK (although to be fair I think it should be recertified as a PG) I'm pretty sure Felidae is a 15 and some of the concepts in that film definitly are disturbing. I don't think it's at all comparable to Watership Down. Even Plague Dogs which is made by the same studio and based on a book by the same author as Watership Down was never targeted at young children.
My Grandfather sat me down to watch Watership Down when I was 6 lol. I was definitely deeply disturbed at first but after my Grandpa talked with me about it I felt better & it became one of my favorite movies that I frequently watched.
Yes! One of my requests was fulfilled! Thank You!
Imagine watching this movie after being read Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny to you so many times...
Good review! It may be brutal but it does look incredible! And the ending there gave me a hint on what the next review will be! :)
You should check out The PLague Dogs (pacifically the uncut version if you can), another British animated film made by the same people who made Watership Down and also another novel by Richard Adams.
Though fair warning, after watching it you'll get why it is not so fondly remembered.
I remember watching this.
Most violent thing I've seen as a child...
Adults who think animation is just for kids: Cartoons are stupid they are just for kids
Water ship down : Hold my beer
BBC & Netflix are working on a new animated adaptation of watership down. So get ready for more bunny on bunny violence coming soon to Netflix.
uh oh chicken little's back!
THANK YOU SO MUCH ANIMATT!!!!!!!
Best year for animation ever
One interesting Trivia, this is the first Animated Feature to ever use the Dolby Sound System.
I remember my mum letting me watch this movie and the Animals of Farthing Wood at a young age as a reality check to see how hard life is for our wild life.
Animals of farthing wood, red wall, wind in the willows, Watership down, Beatrix potter, I was massively into the animal stories as a kid
Man, this movie is a whole buttload of awesome. Thanks for giving it a review, Mat!
Yellow Submarine, animal farm, Watership down, it's good to be British
I once had a demonic rabbit when I was a kid. It growled, I know how evil these things can be.
one quote from dexters's lab pretty much explains the movie "The Horror,The HOOOORRRROR!!!!"
Wow, I just so happened to watch this on the 5th anniversary of this video's release.
I remember watching this when I was a little boy and the violence in it emotionally traumatized me but I'd imagine that rabbits do get as violent with each other in this kind of way for food, territory and mates.
(Spoilers! Spoilers)
Yes, I was traumatized by this movie when I was young too. And yes, the PG rating was a bad choice. That said, this is by far my favorite non anime film of all time. Why? I interpret this movie as a beautiful rendition of what people in real life are willing to sacrifice for freedom. Because in the movie, even when some rabbits start dying and know the dangers that they all will face, they press because they have literally nothing to go back to and also because any death and suffering is worth it if one day, you can wake up knowing that there is no repressive leader. The nakedness this movies themes are to apparent that is beautiful.
but it is animated
BrokenGlass043 Yes, I was afraid when I saw it as a kid. But I don’t only see the cartoon but also the emotional stress going on and on. Some say the story represents World War Two and tyranny of fascism. And that makes it interesting for all ages.
I really love this movie and have loved it ever since I first saw it as a kid
I love the last few seconds.
I used to watch this movie as a child. I don't think I need to wonder why I have such a dark sense of humor and taste of the arts anymore.
Great review! I'm really interested to see this film.
I just watched this movie last night. I really liked it. I am glad that I watched this as a 21 year old than a child because I know I would have had nightmares then. Not a Children's film! I want to read the book so bad!
It's an adult animated film
that end scene was brilliant
Great reviews, AniMat, you've won a new subber. Glad you appreciate this story as something beyond a shockfest that it gets mistaken for. Also, good pronunciation of El-ahrairah. :D
This movie didn't scar me for life as a kid.
I'll give you a hint to what did: my icon.
One of my fave films and the book never bores me. X
Every time I see General woundroot trying to leap & attack, I think Gollum jumped him, snapped his neck and brought it to Frodo
For someone who read the book, it was a good adaptation. I loved all the characters in the book. I would argue that this isn't really a family film but I'm pretty sure everyone could agree on this. I would recommend a young adult read and/or watch the film
Omg! I knew someone would request AniMat to review Chicken Little after he looked at Zootopia! Hahaa! Good luck Animat XD!
supermariosonic 298 Then your request will reach the Animation Hat. The person who requested Chicken Little requested it on Patreon. It was a Patreon Request.
supermariosonic 298 So that request will be put in the Animation Hat.
supermariosonic 298 AniMat never mentioned anything about Google Gmail requests on his channel, and if he did, he probably wouldn't classify them in the same line as Patreon Requests. If it isn't a Patreon Request, he regards it as any normal request and puts it into the Animation Hat to be picked out to review. In short, he isn't going to review your requested movie upfront.
supermariosonic 298 Yeah most likely
I loved this movie as a kid. And I still do now, the backgrounds are incredibly remarkable in my opinion.
Matt you should watch Felidae! :D
agreed!
Yes :>
Wow. I mean wow! That what is the most brutal thing from bunnies ever seen. Jeaz and I thought that cats from American Tail can be that scary
This looks like a good year for Animation reviews, huh?
So we're not gonna talk about how some bunnies get barried alive and go insane
