To be clear, Cagliostro was Miyazaki's first _theatrical_ directorial debut. He had done directorial work in TV series prior to Cagliostro, and had actually been in the TV animation industry for maybe 15 or so years before working on the film, including directing some of the Lupin TV series. The reason Lupin's character is slightly different from his Monkey Punch incarnation is because the production's goal was to portray an older, world-wary Lupin who had matured a bit from his younger, wilder days.
To be fair, most of animated Lupin III is kinda different to the Monkey Punch incarnation. It's not only Miyazaki thing. Most of animated Lupin is more on the lighter and softer side of things (but not exclusively).

Fujiko knew that playing up her sexual side wouldn't benefit her since the Count is no fool and infiltrating the Castle as a Governess would actually take suspicion off of her in the long term, Jigen is there out of loyalty to Lupin and hears why Lupin won't go after Clarisse, and Goemon is just kinda there beside his own Loyalty to Lupin. Zenigata would have acted the exact same regardless of how the others acted.
This is one big circle. Castle of Cagliostro might inspired Indiana Jones. And Indiana Jones inspired Ducktales. And Ducktales was sometimes animated by TMS Entertainment. And TMS Entertainment did the animation of the newer Lupin the Third series.

This and Porco Rosso are the last movies before I have officially watched all the movies Hayao Miyazaki has directed. Can't wait to see this though, since even if its his directorial debut, it definitely showed how talented Miyazaki was.
Great review! I love Castle of Cagliostro, its up there with Raiders for me as one of my favorite adventure films. Clamouring for the day the Animat gets to review Don Hertzfeldt's "It's Such a Beautiful Day" though. THAT is going to be an interesting review. Underrated, I wish more people had seen it.

I did came up an idea of making my own animated Robin Hood film and it is influence and inspiration of The Castle of Cagliostro. And it is so influence and inspired by other films like Shrek, Tangled and The Road to El Dorado. It will be mix of comedy and drama and both Robin Hood and Little John are likable con artists. Both are stealing gold and money from rich to give the poor people. It will be 2d hand drawn animation like Disney, DreamWorks and Studio Ghibli and to have British and American actors to fit the voices of the characters. So what do you think?

And don't forget that this was adapted into a videogame console in the 80's using a laserdisc player similar to Dragon's Lair. I can still see and hear the cues from the game in my head prompting either a button mash or joystick toggle up/down/left or right. When you see him running across the rooftops of the castle, that's where I remember it the most.
This movie was my first introduction to the world of Lupin and I love it every time I watch it! Knowing that this is the launching point of Mitazaki’s career makes it better. True the characters are different than their usual portrayals it’s not unwelcome. In fact these characters have had such personalities in the cannon shows. This movie is definitely worth rewatching and I never get tired of it.
This looks awesome and I need to rent it. I'm not very familiar with Lupin III and his adventures, but I love crime, heist, and detective stories, so this would be right up my alley. I also love Miyazaki's work. I think my sister, too, who loves anime and especially Miyazaki, would like this. Your review just sold me on a potential new favorite film!

i never heard of this movie before intil i watched the bonus features for nussuca and the valley of the wind. they talk about it for a min before talking about nussuca's production and a few months later .my library had it and i didn't know it was a lupin the lll movie (and i wondered about him) so i rented it and i loved it
I was pretty aware of Lupin the 3rd from Toonami. I fell in love with the anime from it. But I was never aware of this film until one day, years ago, when I was walking through the movie section of Walmart. In passing, I saw the DVD cover of this (the front cover was with Lupin holding Clarisse while on the end of a rope) and looked at it for a second until I realized that was Lupin on the cover. I knew I had to buy it and I am glad I did because it is my all-time favorite anime movie I have seen. If you want the definitive version of this movie, go out and buy the Discotek Collector's Edition Blu-Ray. It has both dub versions on it, several cast and crew interviews (including Bob Bergen and David Hayter, the two Lupins). It is everything that a collector's home video release should be.
Interesting fact, which may have contributed to its popularity, is that this movie was also used as a base for a video game. Back when Dragon's Lair was popular and several similar games came out, this was the video portion of a game called cliffhanger (several years before the Stallone movie). Didn't even know it was a movie until I saw the box for it at a video store and recognized the main character as being from the game.
Miyazaki made Lupin into a lovable rogue which is a huge departure from his overall depiction as a lecherous fellow and Fujiko got a major character overhaul which turned her into a saint unlike her original depiction as a sultry vixen
I dont usually watch or enjoy animes or mangas or animated movies in general but the castle of caliostro is one that i remember from my childhood that i really loved. Ive just rediscovered it and i cant wait to watch it many more times from now on

I enjoyed this film. But the introduction into the main plot could have used some work. They stole a ton of counterfeit money. Then he decided to get rid of it for being fake, even though the money was good enough to fool the government. That part made absolutely no sense.
The dud used in this review was the original done by Stream line in 1992 (Also the version currently available on Netflix). Another dub was done in 2000 by Manga, which had a lot of swearing. This is what got me into Lupin the third when I was little. Surprising how mature some of the Lupin stuff are compared to this.

Something I can’t help but notice is how much darker Zenigata’s skin tone is in this than part 2 and especially parts 4-6.
