Virtua Racing: FlatOut [PS2] by SEGA [HD] [1080p]

- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- Virtua Racing: FlatOut (バーチャレーシング フラットアウト) for PlayStation 2 is a 2004 remake of Sega AM2’s original Model 1 arcade racer.
DISCLAIMER: Brightness, contrast, and color saturation have been adjusted to appear closer to the original arcade game. In actuality, the graphics in the PS2 version are much more drab.

This has got to be one of the most visually pleasing things I have ever seen.
Keep in mind that it doesn't actually look like that. I've significantly enhanced the brightness/contrast/saturation, used a hack to add in widescreen, tripled the resolution, and have AA running.
I can tell. It is a far cry from 640x480, 30fps interlaced. I assume this is PCSX2? It's the bold colors and lack of texture-mapping that really got me hard. :)
Sega Boy Yep!
Sega Boy Yeah had to bump up the contrast on a very well loved PS2 fat, but it still runs like a damned dream
@@segaboy9894 me too, I love the lack of textures, so simple and beautiful!!
The mix of the primitive original models and the fancier shaders looks really cool. If only the draw distance was better.
The shadows on some stages look a bit wonky when played during the daytime, but yeah, it generally looks nice once you've adjusted the brightness, contrast, and saturation.
I agree.
I dig low poly look here, and it runs so nice.
But true, it does have more pop in than a bag of Orville Reddenbockers.
@@5002seven I'm actually not entirely sure, because we now know what it's like with no pop-in at all. I.E. the Switch version. It quickly becomes obvious really fast the game was NEVER meant to have un-limited draw distance. I.E. I honestly looks like the entire world is a shifting table-top, not a perpetual distance as you might expect. (So in a way, the draw distance with eight-players on 1080p helps the game. With no frame drops!)
graphics can't get better than this!! Incredible. I would love to see 4K editions of the classic Virtua games in a similar fashion to this PS2 remake.
Maybe on Dreamcast 2
Nintendo Switch
@@superbroly64DS You mean the Xbox?
@@superbroly64DS maybe on Steam Deck
All of these tracks are awesome. But I'm particularly in love with that City circuit at the end! That is such a cool track!
Definitely the best of the few 3D Ages games we actually got in the US.
And Europe, because we didn’t get Alien Syndrome’s remake unlike America did, since they wanted to keep the European release of SEGA Classics Collection for the PlayStation 2 rated 12+, which is a shame, but somehow relieving, since the original Arcade game is better, in my opinion.
This remake of Virtua Racing though, probably the best home console port, in a two-horse race against the Switch port, also in a SEGA AGES series.
The "FINAL LAP!" announcement is from Power Drift!
I like the tid bits of music it plays after each time extension.
Holy molly, I didn't know this port exist!!
Looks really cool, rock solid 60fps, cool shadown/lighting fx, even the popup is there hahaha.
It's not exactly 60fps. Keep an eye on objects like trees and amusement park rides. You'll see some stuttering. It's especially bad on the final track. This could be an emulation issue, but PCSX2 said the game was running at 100% speed with zero frame drops. I couldn't verify on my own PS2 because it needs a new laser.
Saturn Memories
new laser?
Dude, try to run (ISO) games on a HDD ;)

manuelink64 Might try this in the future, but right now my external HD is dedicated to backing up videos.
Aether SX2 ps2 emulator says it runs at 60 fps, and starting both my phone and my real os2 at same time, I see no visual difference so maybe its near 60, but not 30 like your old emu suggests.
the father of Daytona
"Are you ok?"
No... I am never ok... I need a hug... :(
Good to see the other tracks, that last one is crazy.
There are a lot of blind turns, but once you memorize it, it's not so bad. The canyon track is actually more difficult because of the way the road narrows. If you go off the road in this version, you almost instantly lose all your speed (it sucks).
I ♥ flat shaded polygon games!
BTW: This port had widescreen support?
It looks very good, only the HUD looks "stretched".
No, widescreen was hacked in via PCSX2. And yes, the HUD is stretched unfortunately.
I saw this game for sell at Walmart in 2005 but I hesitate. I should have bought by it
In 25 the years this game has been around, I've never seen it look so good.
It doesn't actually look as good as my video makes it seem. I've adjusted the brightness, contrast, and color levels to appear more in line with the arcade version. Normally, the game looks very drab. Also, you're seeing none of the weak points in the gameplay. I've tweaked the analog sensitivity to make handling less twitchy and practiced enough to avoid the ridiculous hitboxes on the enemy drones and stay off the grass which instantly slows your car down to a crawl in this version. I've also opted to use automatic transmission because there is no discernible difference between it and manual (which isn't the case in the arcade game).
I kind of wish this was on the Dreamcast instead
Some say the hat is still in orbit to this day...
pro tip: you can watch movies on Flixzone. Been using it for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Tyson Adriel yea, been using flixzone} for since december myself =)
I got this on MegaDrive and PS2 Sega ages collection.
This game has restored graphics engine, beautiful.
One of my favorite ports
This game looks good with sharp colors and shadows but lacks the original Model 1 source code handling physics present in the Switch version.
So the switch version is overall best v.r. version?
@@rustymixer2886 The best version is the Model 1 Arcade game. The Switch controller doesn't work well with this game.
@@mathew3267 ok...I meant best home version beside arcade
Why are these graphics so beautiful? No PS2 can do this.
It's about knowing how to use the hardware
But PCSX2 can…
Gran turismo 4
Looks absolutely stunning...
"Are you ok?"
I...I really don't know how to answer that coming from a video game
You have almost the exact some driving lines as me. Nice
1:00 oh the game cares about you
Man I loved that game
My dream is to own this or the original as a giant arcade cabinet, times 16 for that huge multiplayer setting. Despite being a small, short game, I really enjoy the early style and the feeling of the drive.
Rexcor Jungmir Well you only need 8 if you’re going for the arcade version, ‘cause it only lets you link up to 8 players
@@TheMamaluigi300 Ahh, I'd settle for 8, but I could have sworn I saw a picture of 16 cabinets next to each other.
Rexcor Jungmir Any arcade that owns more that 8 probably just wanted to have more people play the game at a time, not necessarily all against each other. It’s likely the same reason why they would want to have multiple Street Fighter 2 cabinets, for example
I've never played this version of Virtua Racing, but judging from the way the car is drifting, it looks like it plays more similar to Daytona USA. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Virtua Racing es un juego muy especial, en cada versión es genial, la de Genesis, 32x, Saturn e incluso en esta versión de Ps2...
Funny that they added more geometry to the wheels but didn't add the rim parts to the inside of them similar to how it is on the outside. I'd have taken that over making the wheels more round, which is actually a little at odds with how the rest of the low-poly game looks.
Only downside about this game?
The drift SFX can get real annoying real quick after a while!
It has far more flaws than that, heh.
Yeah, it's worse than old Gran Turismo.
@@SaturnMemories what else is wrong with it? i do not own this game, so i am curious. the extend time music seems to be a bit buggy at times
@@mastercaptainevan That's an emulation issue. The real problems with this game:
- Steering is overly sensitive (fixable in emulation)
- Colors too drab (again, fixable in emulation)
- Hitboxes on drones are huge
- Grass slows you down to an absolute crawl
- Manual transmission has no advantage over automatic
@@SaturnMemories interesting. i wonder if this was a rushed title. hard to believe based on the inclusion of all the new features
It's bonkers and baffling to this very day as to why this game and many other Model 1 and 2 titles were NOT available on the Dreamcast within the first year of system launch. Imagine if this was on the Dreamcast with 9 new courses, real-time weather, a 10 years championship league, and 16 players online? People would have been tearing it up online for sure and enjoying that and a Daytona USA 2. SEGA KILLED SEGA.
This game was too old to be impressive or necessary for Dreamcast.
SEGA Rally 2 was the right pick, but it was stupidly chosen to be a showcase for Windows CE and rushed out for the Japanese system launch (and it still missed this deadline), limiting the performance. If it had more time and didn’t use Windows CE, it would’ve looked better than arcade and ran at 60FPS. They should’ve ported WaveRunner with Windows CE instead
This is the version they should have just released for the Nintendo Switch.
No, it's definitely not. FlatOut has a lot of issues.
The switch version has unlimited draw distance like the HD Daytona port on Xbox360 and PS3. It’s not 60 fps like this though- the arcade’s 30 fps which looks fine.
They should've put this car in sonic sega all stars racing transformed
Now that's how you play this game amazing driving hat's off to who ever is doing this I thought i was good but not in the same class as this person
It’s like a more primitive version of Daytona USA.
It’s oddly charming.
for some reason I still like the 32x version the most. not sure why ,but just like the Saturn version of Daytona I like it the best for home conversions
Most people do prefer Deluxe. I find the controls to be a bit too twitchy tho. I think my preference is the Saturn version.
Me too dude, the graphics, smoothness and great control are closer to the arcade experience, the Saturn version is a lame port IMO, on the other hand, Daytona CCE on Saturn are terrific port!
For me, I didn't care at most about the graphics (and framerate) of the original Daytona in Saturn (PC version), since I liked both the original and Deluxe/PC version of CE. About Virtua Racing, I liked to play the PS2 version, with also trying the 32x and Genesis versions and experimenting with the controls in MAME to find a good digital driving. I haven't tested the Saturn version.
🙏 amen 32x my fav but I think its only 30fps like most all 32x games
This is one part of game is very funny while choosing the track and car after that its says are you okay....hahaha that's funny
De chico , me encantaba jugar a este juego y en este circuito
Such a good longplay. Any chance of doing the PS2 3D Outrun remake? It's similarly underrated and hasn't gotten the coverage on UA-cam it deserves.
(for me) this game was the best ending song
Wish we could see a revised port for current platforms. Blew my mind back in the day and still fun now.
It would be nice to get new ports of all of Sega's 3D racers. I'd love to race some of you guys online.
The old Model 1 games would make excellent candidates for PS4K as they are simple enough to display in a genuine 4K @60. Would be sweet!
Samba Oz Most of Sega's 3D arcade games would run just fine on the revised PS4.
Agree, tho the beauty of the flat shaded polys is there's no blurry, dated textures to upscale. I have the NTSC/J Virtua Fighter Anni disc - I'd love to see a 4K version bundled with a revision of Virtua Racing FO.
Switch says 👋 hi
Music seems off...I like the 32x better..visually its great
One of those few games that look good stretched to 16:9
Only the HUD is stretched. All the 3D elements are being properly displayed via a widescreen hack.
@@SaturnMemories no, I used a website called UA-cam video strecher and after playing with the settings I clearly saw its streched to 16:9
@@novostranger And I'm telling you that I used a widescreen hack. The 3D elements in this video are not stretched.
@@SaturnMemories they are. Let me show you a proof.
There has always been something off about this version, and I don't know why. It just feels a bit creepy, idk why
is it because the car rotates on its center axis
@@flubberisagoodmovie 2 years later I still feel the same! Just something about the contrast of art-styles I think? All the objects are low-poly, but the shadows, reflections and the sky are much more realistic, and to me it makes everything feel empty, tiny, fake, and gives a weird sensation of exposure, being watched, I don't know. It's like this game is trying to convince me it's that it's everything that exists. Like, being born as a lab rat to be experienced on. Or in this case, race! Noticing details that things aren't natural, but then what is natural??... sorry I'm talking crazy alkjsdlaksjdlkas
EDIT: You're right about the camera too, the way the car is always in the center, it looks to be not actually moving at all, but rather the scenario around is coming at it. I think that effect is helped by the sky, that in contrast, stays in place (besides turning around), doesn't move toward or away from you, right?
You're damn good at this game.
Just takes a little practice. That's all.
I'm hoping the version that's gunna be on switch soon turns out to be this one
No, it's a direct port of the arcade game.
@@SaturnMemories ah well, it's still p neat sega and m2 are even doing it
IMO, it's better that way. FlatOut has pretty crappy physics compared to all other versions of the game.
Saturn Memories It would’ve been nice if the cars and courses from Deluxe would be added, like how Sonic 1 on iOS added Tails and Knuckles
@@TheMamaluigi300 knowing this is M2 we're talking about, they'll add something that wasnt in the arcade version originally
*passes checkpoint* "..TIME BONUH.." :D
But how is there still pop-in? This is a PS2. A PS1 may have been able to put in nearly most of what the arcade could do.
1:03 Terry Bogard: Are you okay?
Ayo ? The checkpoint announcer sounds like King from King of Fighters
This has been my go to port of VR (not perfect but runs better than MAME atm with some of the GFX issues). The tire screeching is pretty annoying though.
I have a lot of problems with FlatOut. Top speed for manual transmission is identical to automatic, collision with drones is terrible, grass makes you grind to an almost immediate halt, the graphics are way too dark (I adjusted them for this video), and the tire screeching is just awful. It's really flawed.
If only there was somebody that *COULD* mod the game back to a more arcade like experience (with the for-mentioned problems fixed)
XeCuTioNR To fix collision, you have to make the hitbox on the drones a bit smaller, and change how the player car interacts with the drone depending on what speed and what parts of the vehicles touch one another. As it is, touching a drone anywhere at any speed makes you spin out. In the original game, you could rub up against the side of a drone without spinning out as long as you didn't turn into them completely. Also, I'm pretty sure you could tap their back end if both cars were moving at relatively the same speed.
Fixing the grass would entail lessening the speed loss and making it so that if you tried to turn too hard on it, you'll spin out.
Everything else would be pretty simple.
The engine noise doesn't do you any favors either.
Its like they ripped out this game's heart and soul just watching this. That forgiving car handling would have you spinning out all over the place in the original arcade game. Even with the new Switch they made sure to bring home the proper car handling from the arcade. This shit here is watered down for the Sony crowd, figures they'd like it.
Also that drifting noise is just unbearable
Please, tell us how could you run this so perfectly?
I ask this cause I installed this game on my ps3 and it doesn't run with all this performance, with all these colors. It looks so matte in ps3. Please tell us the secret to running this game with this performance.
The solution is to not use the PS3. PCSX2 1.7.0, or a PS4 would be more up to the task.
Just noticed - doesn't the car have the 92-93 color scheme from McLaren from the actual F1 car?
aytron senna mclaren mp/4 i think
The tyre screeching is over done in this version and ruins the game for me, it drives me mad when playing the PS2 version. The game runs beautifully but the sound is over done.
1:03 are you okay?
yeah. im okay- i mean...what?
in all seriousness, who the heck translate / localised this?
Welcome to the exciting world of Engrish. Be prepared to see much, much more of it as you dig deeper into import gaming.
this is kinda stupid though... how did they manage to screw the translation so badly. wait. is this japanese only or the game made it out in worldwide too? that kinda explain the engrish if the game only made out in japan.
altho, that will be kinda stupid considering that this game is full english
It was released in Japan first. But even games that do eventually make it over here still have shoddy translations and laughably bad acting. Take a look at The House of the Dead 2 sometime.
i know how funny hotd2 is. i dont know if they were intentionally make it bad or sega just cant find any suitable va.
for some weird reason, some of japanese arcade games even with japanese theme use english voice acting by default and only voice avaible for said games. take it ninja assault for example.
japan is a weird country...
Somehow, the arcade from 1992 lools better
Dude what port are you playing this from? It looks super hi res compared to the Genesis. I loved this game so much as a kid.
It's Virtua Racing: FlatOut on PS2 being upscaled to 1080p in an emulator. I've also tweaked the colors so they appear less drab and used a widescreen hack. Unfortunately, it isn't exactly faithful to how the arcade original plays.
does this actually play like the original?
still don't know how a PS2 game can run on the Genesis (yes i know the arcade and genesis ones were the first, this is a remake but still.)
We need this with lan support
Did someone Extracted that F1 model?
Because i was doing a think, so i questioned...

Why is it called “Virtua Racing: Flatout”?!
'Cause why not I guess.

the circuit rotation in hud is kind weird to me
why dose it look like ur shooting out chips when u drift
They're sparks. Formula 1 cars used to be outfitted with titanium skid plates that would shoot up sparks when they came in contact with the track.
I did not know that. The more you know. :)
Well.. recently they are using titanium skidplates, but now on the 'plank'.
Notice the front 3 'circles' on the 'plank'. Those are the titanium skidplates, they are added since 2015 to add effects. f1.imgci.com/PICTURES/CMS/24100/24139.jpg
MK3424 Nice. I didn't realize they brought them back. Only F1 event I've caught in the last few years was the inaugural race in Azerbaijan's new circuit.

Hint: *DO NOT USE COUPE IN GRAND PRIX, YOU WILL NEVER WIN!!*
Yeah, I noticed this. Although I did manage to win one race with the coupe on Island. I also found it funny how the fastest car in the game also has better handling than the F1 car.
was this before textures were invented? still why does the sparks look so ridiculously dumb.
The concept of texture mapping was invented in the '70s. By the '80s, it was starting to show up in film but still couldn't be reproduced in real time (in a commercially viable way). That's why early 3D boards like Namco's System 21 and Sega's Model 1 used untextured polygons. Real time texture mapping wouldn't be possible until late 1992 when Namco introduced their System 22 board. Sega followed shortly thereafter with the Model 2 board.
That's true. I actually know this. Nintendos mode 7 on the snes was not far from a textured polygon though, although not true 3d.
blackmagic x Mode 7 was sprite scaling and rotation, which if used certain ways, could indeed give the impression of 3D. The Mega Drive could only accomplish this through add-ons like the Mega CD and 32X.
Both the Super Famicom and Mega Drive could produce actual untextured polygons though..Games like Atari's Hard Drivin' and Steel Talons run like slideshows on the systems, but they do run, heh. Nintendo's Super FX chip (Star Fox) and Sega's SVP (Virtua Racing) allowed for more tolerable 3D experiences, and the 32X (Stellar Assault) pushed 3D about as far as it could go on a base unit released in 1988.
this is a troll comment or he is a dumb idiot kid
This game has got more skidmarks than Hilary Clinton's pants!!
😆
Why does the draw distance suck ass? This is a PS2 for crying out loud!
I guess they wanted to keep it as close to the original as possible.
