    these late gen scaler games looked a lot nicer than the early 3d polygon games!

      Fact. Kinda sad that home consoles 2D capabilities never evolve to what arcades were doing and then simply skipped ahead to full polygon 3D graphics.

      Yes, they have way more granular detail than a Virtua Racing, for example. People got away from 2d elements with the boom of 3d, but the games from the 32 bit era that aged better are the ones with lots of well drawn textures and 2d elements.

      What does gen scaler mean?

    • @thiagovidal6137
      @thiagovidal6137 5 місяців тому +4

      @tarekwayne9193 "late gen" "scaler." Not "gen scaler."
      By late gen he means the last few games that came out at the end of their generation using sprite scaling technique to simulate 3D instead of polygons. They look better than early polygon games.

    "What makes Slip Stream even more interesting is the fact the game is powered by Sega's System 32 arcade board, rather than Capcom's own CPS1 or CPS2 hardware. Why Capcom chose to partner with Sega on this is something of a mystery; it's possible the System 32 hardware was more suited to the sprite scaling trickery required to make a decent sprite-based racer, rather than anything Capcom had available."
    In American gamer magazines the arcade game coverage was really sloppy and not as strong as it was in Japan where they had dedicated arcade game magazines so this game could easily slip from being known... however.
    Why did Capcom partner with Sega? very simple... the Sega Multi System 32 arcade hardware was the most powerful super scalar 2d hardware made for arcades until the Sega Saturn based Sega Titan Video aka ST-V arcade hardware which could easily push the sprites and scaling to pull off this game however yeah by 1995 this getting a home port would have depended on Sega of America (the subsidiary branch hired to market, distribute, etc Sega hardware) actually had bothered to support the Sega Saturn...
    Also Capcom's CPS2 was NOT a super scaling design... you can only do so much with that hardware... and later Capcom used the Sega ST-V arcade hardware and even used the SH2 CPU in their CPS3 arcade hardware which would have made a Sega Saturn port extremely close to the arcade version.

      Why Sega never bothered to port many of their top arcade games like this, Golden Axe Death Adder, and more is beyond me.
      They had a 2D powerhouse in the Saturn. Yet they decided to focus on 3D to go toe to toe with Playstation. I mean, Japan got
      some 2D love and awesome shooters. It's really a shame Sega of Japan and US couldn't see eye to eye.

    • @kathleendelcourt8136
      @kathleendelcourt8136 3 роки тому +10

      @Apollo Sungod The System 32 was actually noticeably faster than the Saturn for sprite scaling effects. Even games from SEGA's previous gen super scaler system (the Y Board) like Galaxy Force and Power Drift only ran at 30 fps on Saturn which was half the framerate of the arcade originals.

    • @Hellwyck
      @Hellwyck 3 роки тому +1

      That'll explain why it looks and feels more like Outrunners.

    • @apollosungod2819
      @apollosungod2819 3 роки тому +1

      @@kathleendelcourt8136 Although there is a bit of a difference between the Super Scaler Systems like the Y Board... there is also a difference in the programmer staff and the effort they may have put in as well as OTHER physical limitations like dealing with the fact that the Sega Saturn ended up becoming a CD-ROM based game system thanks to Sega of America's disruption with the 32X.
      On "paper" the Super Scaler System did indeed boast certain features... same with the Multi System 32 however I hope you understand that Sega and Hitachi worked very closely together in designing the Super H CPU and the more powerful version used in the Sega Saturn... the SH2 which architecturally wise is a dramatic power difference from the Motorola 680X0 variants used in those arcade boards... which is a big factor as the Amusement Division teams were known for cracking open CPUs and other chips by using custom assembler coding because in the arcade centers there is a greater pressure to stand out of the rest of the machines... aka these machines have to appeal to an average arcade center visitor and player. They don't just have to capture the imagination but they actually have to play well as well as perform well to keep those coins coming back or in some cases, where a master player performs what seems impossible and get the top scores on a single credit.
      I would argue that it might not be giving the Sega Saturn hardware and it's scaling capabilities credit due to the dual SH2s, the VDP1, VDP2 and the SCU-DSP chip... note that the SH2s also have a built in DSP and that for Power Drift and Galaxy Force, the 4MB RAM Cartridge, despite having been released in 1997, was not allowed to be used because lets face it... Sega of America dropped the ball, the set the tone of not supporting, not properly promoting and not beliving in the Sega Saturn as a next generation platform... their job was marketing and they blew it which should come to no surprise when they were doing the same with the Sega MegaDrive ever since they kept requesting that it be produced with "cheaper" parts to force lower prices instead of just doing proper marketing efforts.
      Also I seem to recall that in a Japanese Sega fan magazine either press release or interview, the dev team in charge of handling the reprogramming conversions of Power Drift and Galaxy Force mentioned that they had to work with the memory available... now I do not recall the precise issue but I feel this makes sense since they were a reprogramming conversion team and not the original arcade team which in Sega, they were busy with the constant hardware changes especially that same years of 1997 to 1998 where the pressure from Sega of America made next gen hardware where Sega's devs had to basically keep up.

    It's not so outdated by 1995 standards. I was amaze back then and feel happily crazy when magazines announced a SEGA SATURN version (which of course never saw the light of day). Sure, it was not cutting edge like Daytona or Ridge Racer, but still impressed me, in part by the large sprites of trees and everything on the sides of the tracks with sleek frame rate, something impossible in both Mega Drive and Snes at that time.

    Muy chulo, pero dos años antes, en 1993, se lanzó Daytona USA con gráficos poligonales 3D y mapeado de texturas.
    Este juego ya nació anticuado y, de hecho, nunca lo vi en ningún salón recreativo.

    • @Dremayer2000
      @Dremayer2000 3 роки тому +1

      Yo tampoco lo vi en ningún bar/salón recreativo y es que con la fiebre por las 3D de mediados de los 90 nos dio a todos por querer dejar atrás las benditas 2D y fíjate en pleno 1996 sale esa maravilla llamada Metal Slug, ya con PSX, Saturn y N64(en el japonés) en el mercado y echando la vista atrás creo que a este si se le valoró como merecía a pesar de estar en años de exaltación de los polígonos y defenestración de lo 2D.
      Con los juegos de coches quizás fuera más difícil para las 2D, te quedabas embobado mirando esos espectaculares Sega Rally, Daytona Usa, Scud Race, Ridge Racer...etc y ya ni aunque te pusieran delante la recre original de Out Run le hacías caso xd el bendito Scaling que antaño nos regalaba la ilusión óptica de Racing games en 3d se había quedado desfasado de sopetón.
