- High Speed and Slow trains:
Eden Valley and Carlisle.
And that 805!
8th & 9th Feb 23
Trains cruising down the line at Eden Valley loop south of Penrith and the following day passing through Carlisle.
The 805 appeared again under diesel power - on its northbound run to Glasgow it had been diverted into Polmadie depot due to traction issues. Are there problems with it running on electricity?

Great video Leslie. Nice captures of freight trains and the new AWC 805
Thanks!
amazing video, i was on that 390 155 pendolino (1S63)
Thank you!
Great work Les you do get around. Appreciate the info you put up for every train certainly gives us a good idea of where everything goes or in some cases terminates.
Keep up the good work. Regards Alex
Thanks! I think it adds to the record for the future
Nice one . Still can’t figure out the Avanti livery and the logic applied to the livery . Seems very complicated
Thanks! If only Avanti spent as much effort on crewing their trains reliably!
Yet another cracking video! Cheers Euan
Thanks Euan
Hey Leslie, great video. I enjoyed watching, the trains look great! 👍
Thank you very much!
@@LeslieGilpinRailways your welcome!
Salutări din România👋👋
Thanks for watching
Good stuff Leslie, is that the 805 that failed on test?
One and the same! Didn't run Wednesday, had issues Thursday and didn't run (I believe) Friday.
Your continued excellence aside... another great video, but I will admit, I do love the shots of trains (especially passenger, of course) coming around the curves in the countryside. I am not sure why, but those always draw my attention more than anything. Maybe it is because, around a curve, you get both front/back and broadside... a greater sense of travel... the speed and power? I don't know, but it gets me more than any other shot. Also... regarding the Ghost 805... we know it is Avanti WC Do you know why it is not liveried yet? Is it because they do not want it getting confused with running trains, or the simple, mundane, answer... they don't have the new appliques ready in that size? lol Thanks for another fun video! Cheers!
Thanks Anthony. I agree about a nice long curve making a great clip. The 805 is still under test - I don't know if it has been formally delivered yet.
I am trying to find out the measurements of those LARGE SQUARE, LEDFRONTED on a black background, Signal that online look about 12 inches square, with HO SCALE makes it about 3.5mm square with 7 columns wide and 6 high, a little bigger would be nice.
THANKS for your time
Graeme
Graeme - not exactly sure on size of the route indicators, definitely 6 lamps deep.
Nice to see the 805 again..and 66413. Good one Leslie. All the best.
Thanks Tim
Thanks for the excellent videos.
Part of the testing regimen for the 805 would surely test its performance in a degraded state e.g. with an isolated power car for example. It would be interesting to know if was actually faulty or just tested in a sub optimal configuration.
As others have noted there are some very obvious track faults visible in the video e.g. at 19:05 there is a pronounced dip just after the points. How long has that been apparent?
Thanks! I would have thought that the performance tests were largely carried out by Hitachi when it ran on the East Coast from the factory. Who knows? The trackwork at Carlisle does look rough when compressed by the zoom. The 20mph limit probably keeps things safe.
👍🏻 great video
Thanks
Excellent video
Thanks Mels
Great videos, Les - thanks muchly. One question, though. There is no evidence of a very large build-up of empty freight stock at Chirk. When do the wagons from all those wood trains get returned to collect more trees ?
Thanks. The empties run in hours of darkness, unless there is some delay with the outward working.
hi Les once again you have excelled yourself what a great video and im assuming the the pics outside the station confide was the Eden valley if im wrong im sorry but the area around there was beautiful as was the trains my bucket list time again i think once again thanks for the video look forward to the next one pls stay safe my friend
Thanks. The countryside shots are south of Penrith on the WCML with the Eden Valley goods loop alongside the long sweeping curve. The view in the other direction is towards the site of Clifton & Lowther station, now a large timber depot.
was great filming Les@@LeslieGilpinRailways
Leslie, I enjoy watching your videos a great deal. I have a couple of questions/observations if I may? Has there been a rule change (coinciding with yellow front panel no longer required, perhaps) where marker lights seem to be a thing of the past and all lights appear to be on? The condition of track at the station throat appears to be very poor - is this problematic in what you see? I'm surprised at the number of freight locos with cab doors open at the rearmost cab - you'd imagine this exposes them to rain and debris damage? Interested to hear your thoughts - thanks for putting up regular great footage.
Thanks, I'm glad that you enjoy them. From what I can tell with the removal of the yellow panels, there has to be high intensity headlights. In the daytime these aren't obvious but can cause strange effects on video, even making autofocus difficult. At night the intensity is much more obvious, especially on locomotives. Open cab doors is becoming a common sight although I understand that these are meant to be locked shut except when there is crew in the cab
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, it’s much appreciated.
Fab....
Thanks Declan!
Bom de lelier lindo trem trein afoto bom fim semana ai trein novo branco trem bala
Thanks. I agree it looks good
Some great shots, the 805 sounds quite good, tho I do wonder what the fate of the voyagers will be
Thanks. Voyagers are going to Cross Country aren't they?
@@LeslieGilpinRailways so I heard, but isn’t XCountry expiring soon?
@@Nate0493 as will Avanti and TransPennine at their current performance levels
@@LeslieGilpinRailways haha yes, more trains delayed or cancelled than actually running
