9:40 clip#20 We are in dense congested traffic. A car emerges from the left and positions as though it is not going to continue in the left lane. Driver does not signal right but our lane (2) is straight and right turn so he might want lane 2. We accelerate hard for a confined space. In conclusion the other drivers actions could have been anticipated and we do the wrong thing by attempting to rapidly join the end of a queue a few yards ahead.

Clip 15 was nasty. I don't like driving at night and with the rain, it is much worse. So if you are stuck behind someone doing 30 mph at night in the pouring rain then it is probably me.

I got badly tail-gated by a van (headlights at mirror height, which just made it worse) in the dark during heavy rain and ended up driving faster than I thought was safe - though evidently not as fast as he thought I should be going. It was a country road and we inevitably came to a deep puddle right across the road and I simply felt it was safer to keep on, driving through it than to brake because even a mild brake would have resulted in a potentially nasty accident. It ripped the drip tray off the car. Now, stuff 'em, I'll drive at the speed I deem to be safe and if they want to buy me a new car, so be it. Front and rear dashcams will provide the evidence.

I've done Clip #4 when I was less experienced, and now I know better. I was expecting a car to turn right on a mini roundabout, not perform a U-turn. I was on a pushbike too, so I'd have come off worse if the U-turning car hadn't stopped for me. Oops. Good thing one of us was paying attention.
Lesson learned that day. Assumption is the mother of all f- ups.

I agree, whenever I am turning around at a mini roundabout, I am always looking out for exactly that happening. Even at low speed, there is no way in the world I would ever dream of using the horn at somebody who didn't anticipate me doing that.

  • @easytarget2hit374

Spanish roundabouts have interesting rules compared to the rest of the EU/UK. The inside lane is seen as an overtaking lane, and you must return to the outside lane to exit. You can go left (3rd exit) on the outside hand lane a long as your signaling shows you direction. I found this out the hard way on my push bike -with a car that didn't indicate.

Some great clips, the hailstorm my favourite, had something similar, I had slowed to 50 on a 70 due to some serious hail, 2 lane road so not holding anyone up, guy behind sped off lost control and ended up on the embankment, shame I don't have a camera, as he missed the start of the armco and 2 trees by inches and luckily had nothing damaged other than his ego. Clip 15. Had almost the same thing happen to me in Iceland when my ex boyfriend was driving. He was passing another car in a lane that was full of slush. He was borrowing the car, and had been told the car was not great in wet conditions. Lo and behold we ended up sliding against the central barrier and my first and so far only car accident. It was terrifying. Luckily no one got hurt and the car was actually quite cheap to fix as the bumper took all the damage.
(He said: "If that stupid barrier wasn't there, we would have been fine." If the barrier wasn't there, we could have had a front collision, mate.)

Ashley, with the clip involving the 2 buses, while i do 100% agree with you that was unprofessional and selfish, you mentioned that the buses have schedules to stick to. 3 things to note here:
1, the overtaking bus only had it's company logo on the rear LED display, meaning the bus was most likely out of service and not on a route
2, the second bus may have been ahead of schedule so it may have been holding time (im not sure what that companies rules are on holding time at bus stops that are not pull-ins).
3' there are multiple reasons as to why that driver may have needed to speak to the other driver (i understand that is not a good way to go about it) such as them both operating a route together or one of the buses being defective.
I understand that i am pure nitpicking here but i just thought these points were worth bringing up. Loving the videos Ashley

The learner was very unlucky but the purpose of the test is to ensure the learner can identify hazards quickly and respond accordingly on their own. It’s a fail once the supervisor has to get involved.

    • @joshdean9105
      @joshdean9105 3 роки тому

@András Torma no its not a ridiculous argument. The aim is to see whether someone can drive a car and meet basic standards, not have to deal with thing so completely spontaneous. Do you really think even a highly skilled driver could have dealt with that situation any differently? I doubt it. A child running into the street is totally different because that's a far more common scenario than a cyclist going the wrong way on a roundabout in an extremely dangerous fashion. The thing is the learner did react and stop but clearly the instinct of the examiner got the better of them. It shows a lack of trust and therefore beggers belief as to how on earth people managed to pass their tests.

02:33 Clip 6, your comment is a good conversation starter, in the south east and London roads it would be practically impossible to change lanes if you shouldn’t do it alongside another vehicle; it’s more a question of better continual observations and recognising that lorries may (wrongly) have different blind spots.

Massive pressure on these drivers to get the job done as soon as possible. They get paid by the day and it's 'assumed' they can get their prescribed route done in 8 hours (by driving like a twat). If more punishment was levied on the companies instead of the drivers for poor behaviour maybe that would sort things out. But then everyone's delivery costs, costs of Amazon Prime etc, would go up.

Of course the Red Ibiza should have turned on the indicators and been more patient with merging to the right lane, perhaps they shouldn't even have switched in the first place.
Buuut the viewer who sent that clip in was wayy too eager to accelerate, said viewer would have had to hit the brakes even if the red car would not have merged!

hi ashley i would like to comment about clip 5. not about the drivers but about car house keeping. As i watched the clip i noticed the reflection of what looked like face masks that had been placed on the dashboard. It interfered with the quality of the clip and it made me wonder about the reflection interfering with the vision through the windscreen for the driver. What is your view about incar housekeeping with regard to reflection on the windscreen and safety in the car. I transport a solid frame wheelchair and frequently need to display a blue badge on my dash so I guess i have more reason to be aware of this type of thing.

Approaching Malaga airport there is a roundabout that has 3 lanes in, 2 lanes on it and 2 lanes out. There is no right hand exit. 3 into 2.
I picked the middle lane and slowed right down, while two streams of spanish people went left and right of me without slowing and merged in front in the middle of the roundabout.
I just couldn't work out the rules. I had to wait stationary until there was a break in traffic and go.

Hiya Ashley, Clip 1 is the notoriously awful Army and Navy Roundabout where you can guarantee at least 2 or 3 accidents everyday occurring. I know this as I lived about 2 minutes away….or 45 during rush hour😂 I agree with you that it was a great save by Callum, the white car on approach to this roundabout was obviously in the wrong lane on approach…However, anyone who knows this 5 exit roundabout on approach would 99% of the time position themselves in the right hand lane to make that turn into Baddow Road, I certainly would be….and I think Callum would have been better off positioned there too. That flyover has now been removed, bits of it falling off and hitting cars wasn’t safe. The road markings were awful tho…which prob explains why so many accidents. I reckon you could get two or three full videos of Ashley Analysis from this roundabout alone. I think Callum, is local so prob knows this roundabout too…and as you said to me, there is always ways to improve 👍👍👍

Clip 6 - nope that one is backwards and the fault is all on the lorry driver . ALWAYS make doubly sure before moving to the right , and maintain awareness of surrounding traffic .
Remember - in the UK priority goes to vehicles approaching from the right , and this includes vehicles moving over from the right ; don't forget , that driver might have just had a tyre failure or a loss of power and they may NEED to get to the safety of the hard shoulder rather than being blocked in the middle of a live lane . By the same token , don't sit alongside other vehicles if you can avoid it ; they equally could have a tyre blowout and veer towards you , and the longer you sit in their blind spot the greater chance of them being unaware you are even there .
If planning to leave a motorway or dual carriageway , get on course EARLY , typically work your way over to the nearside no less than a mile from your exit , DO NOT leave it to the last moment to swoop across the paths of other vehicles - unless you want the fines and the bills for the damage you cause .

Another cluster of gold nuggets! Jeez, there are some REAL wombats out there! The hail storm made my blood run cold. I got caught in a similarly monsoon-like downpour close to Heathrow Airport. I was in lane 2, there was a coach in lane 1 and visibility was down to virtually zero ahead, behind and alongside. I was already on dips, so all I could do was put on the rear fogs and pray some loony wasn't going to think he could still go at warp speed and run right into the back of me. The noise of the rain hitting the screen and roof has a peculiar effect, it almost overtakes all other senses. I would note that in places where they DO get real monsoon downpours, like Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, it is not unusual for drivers to stop completely (not recommended on a motorway) or just crawl along until things clear up. As for some of the others, just remember, the bigger they are (BMW vs skip lorry) the more damage they will do to you when it all goes horribly wrong, and the longer you might stay in hospital. Stay safe in Lockdown L'pool !!

For clip 20, the van is also stopped on the 'keep clear' markings, he appears to have let the car out. I'd take a guess that the car didn't think for themselves before pulling out onto the road. The van may have hindered visibility for the red car too, and by the time the red car was moving out, the cammer was mostly in the blind-spot.
I agree with your opinions though; I think both parties are at fault to a certain level.

red car emerging from pub carpark may have ben following satnav which would not give a left or right until they were on the road. Should have used both lanes for a few seconds while deciding. Keep clear does not apply to them so wondering why they didn't emerge earlier, van wasn't blocking exit although partially blocking entrance to carpark.

Ashley, would really like to hear your response and feedback about this as a driving instructor. I do a fair bit of motorway and dual carriageway driving, so 2 or 3 lanes and 70 limit on the way to and back from work.
Undertaking. I will undertake people if they sit in the middle or right hand lane and should move over. I'll be very wary of the possibility of them moving over when I do, but I set my cruise control at 70 for most of the journey, I'll move over into the left lane if there is nothing to overtake and there's lots of space or it's clear ahead, and so so often I see people just sit in the middle lane. Or you'll have this massive queue of people sitting in the 3rd far right lane because they think it's the "fast lane" and because so many people are in it the speed goes to like 65mph when there isn't much in the middle lane. So I'll move over and set the cruise control to 70 again.
Personally I think there are 2 kinds of undertaking. There's what I've described above, which is if I'm travelling within the speed limit and am catching someone who has poor lane discipline, I simply keep the same speed and pass them as opposed to 4 lane changes. Then there's the weaving in and out of traffic that the police would class as driving without due care, we've all seen them, doing about 80mph, going from lane to lane just to get past traffic.
My question to you is... what exactly is wrong with undertaking in the manner in which I've described? I completely understand the police doing someone for driving without due care if they are weaving rapidly in and out of traffic, but calmly passing someone who shouldn't be sitting in the middle or right lane I think is fine.
If the argument is they're not expecting you to overtake on the left hand side, then that would mean any time they move over to the left they don't bother checking mirrors which doesn't make much sense. Genuinely looking for some education or a discussion of why passing someone on the left is more dangerous than the right.

Agree with you completely! There’s no danger of a lane hogger moving to the left as you undertake them because they have no intention of leaving the middle/3rd lane. It’s a lot less dangerous than having to traverse 3 or 4 lanes to pass on the right.

Ive also recorded them reversing down one way roads in order to cut out evening congestion, as if that makes it right to go the wrong way down a one way street. I did send those recordings to dpd, as well as the police. As the start of that particular one way road has a GP surgery on it, as well as a school in close proximity. If you go all the way round any roundabout, you run the risk of being pulled out on from the last exit. Keep it slow and be ready for it to happen. Clip 10, while I often see things coming, I again agree with you; the Only reason I knew it was going to happen was because it’s a dashcam clip....
Clip 17, know that road well, had one or two “interesting events” there, especially at the roundabout ahead; driven it regularly in an artic, and I “Dominate” lanes 1&2 of 3 into the roundabout as they’re narrow, & the turn to theft is too tight to do in one lane.
Folks, if you see a big vehicle in two lanes, they probably need both, give em room.
Clip 18, I’d guess A frame pillar blind spot. Sad, but yup, if an examiner dual controls you, that’s a fail.

On clip 20, I think the fail rests with the Seat for changing lanes without signalling. On first examination I thought the cammer could’ve been going slower but there is a speed stamp provided in the footage. 21km/h is about 13mph which isn’t too fast in my opinion. It looks like the cammer is going faster but that’s caused by an optical illusion created by the dashcam’s wide-angled lens. The cammer reacted quickly and I think he/she didn’t commit a fail.

4:21 My Grandad had 'must get infront' syndrome, we could be traveling along what seems an empty road, but if he saw a car way in the distance he would floor it to catch and pass them, and this was when he was in his 70s, he crashed many cars, and ended up killing himself by turning from a stationary position on a dual carriageway infront of a mondeo going 80mph, all because he couldn't be bothered to drive to the roundabout a mile down the road, and cut through the cyclepath in the center to go back the other way on the A6.
7:36 The speed is blured out but it looks like in the 70s, wipers on slow, sleet rain, I think it looks like the car either aquaplaned, or he braked when the front cars brake lights and the other side headlights glared together, and for me he kept over correcting the steering, even when he was almost stopped he was throwing the wheel each side and looks like he was braking heavy the same time, which you don't do on icy roads.
9:01 the temptation to open my drivers door would be very high ( I wouldn't but still tempted), that youth needs a big life lesson or he will be roadkill.
Last one the red car knew they'd f'd up and didn't want a confrontation that's why they jumped the red lights, although there was no reason for the cammer to speed into that spot like that, he wasn't going anywhere.

At the start of clip 20, it looks as though the white van is braking, it may even be stopping in the "keep clear" zone to let the red car emerge in front of it. The red car then moves to right hand lane without indicating and then runs the amber/red light. As Will4May says, I can understand that the driver of the red car would want to flee from any further confrontations and with 20:20 hindsight it is easy to see that the cammer could have moved up more slowly. But it looks like the time of day was the afternoon rush hour, when the roads will be busy and everyone is hurrying to get home for tea.

  • @radhanisthebold562

For clip #20, the main fail is the red car's failure to MSM. This situation wasn't helped by the cammer speeding into it though, if the road ahead were clear this might be fine but nothing was gained by speeding to the queue. If they had kept it smooth they might have made those lights.
When a car from a side road joins an urban main road with multiple lanes, you can anticipate it is likely that they will do some lane changes very early on.
Cammer also seemed too interested in using the punishment horn, was still moving when it was sounded, get control of the situation first. The use of the horn is chiefly for raising the attention of following traffic that you have stopped.

I seriously think that some roundabout makings need to be changed. If you have three lanes of traffic coming to a roundabout the left hand lane should be arrowed left only & the middle should be left & straight forward that would then stop people from the left lane cutting across in front of vehicles in the middle ( in theory ) but of course people don't do that ! That is of course if the road to your left is a dual carriageway etc etc .People always get in the wrong lanes & instead of carrying on & doing a U turn somewhere safe ( which I do I might add if I go wrong ) they cause havoc & road rage to everybody else on the road. People need to pre plan they route if they are not sure where they are going.

At 4.35 clip 10. Could the cammer have gone right and around the roundabout and avoided the collision? I hope clip 15 the cammer learnt his/her lesson. Clip 18 you say the cyclist made the learner fail but then went on to say, if the learner cant look ahead enough they should not have a licence, surly the cyclist has only highlighted a failing of the learner.

No one expects you to all the way around a mini roundabout, so if you want to do it, expect others not to expect what you are doing.
