    I'm the cyclist in clip 11 starting at 7:15 and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with your analysis but I think it reflects a learning point for yourself if I may. I'm glad to see that some of your viewers have it on the money too in the comments. I gave you some reflections I made in the initial email but you probably don't have that to hand when recording audio.
    Everything about the car's position, from a left position at the junction he joins from, selecting the lane to take the first left, and maintaining a position to take the second left predicts against him taking the right turn he did.
    The learning point for yourself is that the speed of cyclists is very dependant on the gradient and you need to be aware of gradient changes to predict cyclists' actions. I do not in-fact accelerate down the hill but maintain my speed by coming off the power completely and gently applying the brakes.
    Further, for the duration of the road I am not in the blind spot (I recall seeing the face of the driver). as he brakes for the speed hump, at which point I am not in the blind spot. Though I was suspicious of the car as it emerged from the junction, the point at which I realise the risk increases is when he continues to brake after the zebra crossing and it is at the point the he brakes hard that I enter the blind spot which is the key point of my reflection.
    My road position, being to the right of him is good if he turns left or continues straight and communicates to following vehicles my intention that they should not be overtaking at this point.
    Your comment that I have "very little road sense" is I think deeply unfair and represents a lapse in the integrity of your analysis.

      Thanks a lot for first of all sending in the clip and secondly your response. I knew that you wouldn’t be overjoyed with my analysis but unfortunately it still stands. When you mention gradient in relation to predict a cyclists actions I shake my head in disbelief. Just use your brakes more! If I had a collision because I was too close to someone I wouldn’t dream of saying “I was going downhill” Too often the road cyclist has little else on their mind other than rate of travel, and too few pick their time to use speed at sensible times. You even admit in your own comment when risk was increasing, but at that same point alarm bells had been ringing in my head for a while. If you had concerns about the emerging vehicle at the start and rode how you did, it ratifies my quote of “Little road sense” I expect you to also to be less than happy with my response, but sometimes what seems to be a harsh word can teach us most. Please see my words in the way they are meant, which is to increase road safety and reduce risk for yourself and everyone who reads this. Kindest regards, Ashley.

      Basically, he is saying (and thinking) that cycles are second class vehicles and should concede to cars at all times, and probably shouldn't be on the roads at all. Very poor analysis. How dare you ride so fast !!

      BTW @Alan Jones did you watch the video? Perhaps you should to see how many of the clips are “Pro” cyclist. This alone makes a mockery of the words you type. This channel is all about road safety and if more roadies took my advice rather than jumping to each other’s defence all the time, less would be statistics in RTC’s. If you think before you ride as much as you do before you type, you’re in trouble.

    I suffered with really bad anger towards other drivers when they made a simple mistake or when ever I was tailgated. Eventually, my stress lead to being involved in an crash. My lesson I'm teaching myself by watching your videos, is to let things go, remind other drivers they made a mistake and carry on with my day. Your description of the events happening in these videos gives me that gentle reminder of how to react in different situations.

    5:15 It's beyond ridiculous what they'll class as a write off. It's only dented 2 doors, a quarter panel, and some very light damage on the other panels. Such a shame because it's a practically brand new car which looks very repairable. I hate car insurance companies.

    • @EinkOLED
      @EinkOLED 4 роки тому +6

      If it's classed as a write off (if it exceeds a % of the value of the car) then it will be sold at auction as damaged but repairable. It won't be crushed if it is deemed repairable.

    Roundabouts have to be my pet hate in the uk! People don’t understand what lane to be in, they don’t understand it’s give way to the right or traffic already on the roundabout, they can’t stay in their lane they take the race line, they fly onto the roundabout making it difficult for larger slower vehicles to safely join, they go flying past other vehicles giving that car ahead no room for an error, there’s so much more I could ramble on about 😂

      And mini roundabouts, how many drivers don't even attempt to go around the circle painted on the road, even when it's an actual hump! They end up driving directly at a vehicle attempting to clear the roundabout, when had they cornered properly they would nicely tuck behind it and keep things flowing well. Same with straight-lining roundabouts, pure laziness with steering! 😠😂

    • @scottlaaa
      @scottlaaa 4 роки тому +1

      Itchy Scratch totally agree and when you enter a mini roundabout with caution because you can’t see traffic to the right and they floor it at you? They don’t realise they have to give way to you already on it!

    9:08 for clip 13 is a common mistake. The driver pulling out is only seeing the car pulling in, which obscures the car behind it (the cam car). We need to be thinking about what traffic can hide. Could it hide a bike, motorcycle, or in a different scenario, a pedestrian (?).

    • @dgphi

    Clip 12; I’ve been faced with a similar bad overtake, I was driving an 18tonne truck, a cyclist coming toward me, car behind them going at quite a lick so I eased off the gas, gently braked, and the car decided against the overtake. I eased back on the gas, & the car went for it. One emergency stop, 3 write offs & one life saved. Was toward the end of the last shift of 6, with, up to then, NO harsh braking events. (Luckily we Don’t have a bonus linked to driving, but even if we did, I’d rather avoid the crash than get the bonus).
    Jarod’s lecture... fair review.
    Clip 18. Damned good advice Ashley. And yes, I would guess a good 30+% of dashcam compilation clips are roundabouts like that

  • @MK-1973

    Lots of interesting and thought provoking clips and commentary - great selection. I think Jarrod is my favourite. Feel sorry for the Polo driver. I wonder if the young lady who lost her wing mirror knew about acceleration sense and engine braking going down that hill?
    I'd like also if I may to share something that happened the other day. I was out in my wife's Fiesta doing my usual trying to make safe progress within the speed limit. I had a young lad in another Fiesta behind me. He was following close and I could see from the scowl he had on him that he was getting impatient. Sure enough he went tearing past at the first marginal opportunity, cut in front and then roared off onto the dual carriageway going straight across three lanes of traffic. Instead of getting wound up I thought "driving fail" and the thought made me smile.
    I had to think twice though a little further up the road where I made a mistake myself. Nothing too drastic but a little lapse meant I went a bit off line and had to correct sharply enough for my daughter in the back to notice. She said "but daddy, I thought you watched Ashley Neal?" We both had to agree that I might well have made it onto driving fail myself in that instance.

      I watch quite a few of these compilation videos (mostly but not all American - a lot of their mistakes happen in the UK too) but this channel, along with its driving instruction videos from Ashley is by a significant margin the best learning channel I've encountered. You'll get used to recognising the 'body language' of the confused and the stupid drivers and learn to anticipate their actions. As is stated, it is how you react to other people's mistakes that sets you apart as a driver. At least you're here, watching and learning, not imagining you already know it all. All the best with the lessons.

    3:14 I had something similar happen. Coming onto a roundabout I couldn't see onto the exit of the dual carriage way that far, but plenty enough to get out in time and speed up, which is limited to 50mph anyway, now bare in mind this roundabout is light controlled, but where I'm coming onto it isn't. There's is green.
    So barely any cars coming through, it's clear and I exit, when I get to the center lane, a car then becomes visible that's approaching really fast from the dual carriageway (probably speeding too) and has to lock on their wheels.
    Like, slow the hell down you're approaching a roundabout at stupid speeds for one, and chances of them going in the lane they're supposed to be was slim.
    Yet, it was somehow my fault and they blasted the horn. Actually appalling how some people use roundabouts.

    I think you forget to tell something about clip #10: It's also illegal to use your horn when there is no dangerous situation. The aggressive honking was not only irritating for other drivers, it could also scare someone to do something dangerous and cause an accident. I don't know why that guy was aggressive about that tiny mistake of the truck driver, but he should learn to handle his anger. You can be disappointed that someone made a mistake like that, but when you get angry because of that tiny mistake you have a real problem. What is the next step? Brake check? Cutting someone off? I would have slowed down to give him some space. My first driving lesson on the highway an Audi driver cut me off a little. I just lifted my foot of the gas pedal and let him take some room. Then I speeded up to the normal speed again. No drama and we both were on our way.

    I disagree with the focus on speed in clip 15. They're doing 45 mph max on a 50 mph road and were nearly involved in an incident showing that speed has often got nothing/very little to do with bad driving. Complacency with speed could have contributed, but I'd only be able to speculate about that in suggesting a mindset of 'I'm not speeding so won't be catching up on anything'. Officially police reports place 'excess speed' as a contributing factor in only 5% of reportable incidents (those with injuries, major and minor, and/or deaths). Not once were they 'speeding' as their passenger keeps suggesting, but yet they were nearly deadly for the cyclist. Observation is entirely the problem there, poor observation kills, not speed, but yet that's what everyone is obsessed with. Poor or inadequate observation (officially called something else but I can'tr remember what it is right now) is listed as a factor in 38% of reportable incidents.
    Edit; (this single following paragraph added)
    Clip 20 is a possible result of speed enforcement too. Don't exceed the speed limit. Probably 30 mph for that road and they don't exceed that. They then think they'll be fine, 'why would the speed limit be 30 mph if it wasn't safe to do there', without the proper education of how to observe, how important visibility is in the speed you can carry, etc, to be able, encouraged to think otherwise in each situation.
    Speed enforcement isn't actually done to prevent or reduce the likelyhood of incidents occurring. Limits are only for reducing the severity of the injuries *when* you get hit, so you'll 'only' be paralysed/debilitated/traumatised for the rest of your life instead of killed *when* you get hit crossing the road by a driver not paying attention, at least that seems to be how authorities see it anyway. 1930-1935, no speed limits across the whole of the country, approximately 800 fewer deaths occurred in that time, possibly for the first year of no limits country wide, but I can't recall that specific detail so I won't claim it to be the case.
    If someone can't drive fast safely when the conditions enable it then it's a training problem or a simple lack ability not a speed issue, otherwise pilots and passengers would drop dead on takeoff and deaths would only have increased dramatically from the days or Model T Fords that at anything over 40 mph would be throwing pistons out of the engine to the world we're in not where road cars (performance focused at that but still road cars) have broken the 300 mph mark, which isn't the case.

      Excess speed being a factor in only 5% of accidents is vastly different to the fact that speed in terms of trying to get where you’re going quicker is a factor in nearly all accidents, going slower, being more patient and erring towards waiting would eliminate far more than 5% of accidents.

    • @markwright3161
      @markwright3161 4 роки тому

      @@cjeam9199 Going slower doesn't compensate for people not looking where they're going. The most common collision on UK road is driving into the back of someone else in traffic, you can't go much slower than being stationary. If people were taught to the advanced (RoSPA, IAM) level then potentially 90+% of collisions would be prevented, and training to that level enables the elimination of speed limits while maintaining that level of safety, simply driving slower will not reduce incidents that significantly.
      Getting somewhere quicker isn't speed related. If you walk around a building you can get to a destination quicker by taking a shorter route while not walking any faster. Walking the shorter route and tripping over a cable across the floor isn't an incident that results from going quicker, because you're not actually moving faster than you would have been on the longer route. Speed is specifically how fast you're moving, so running into someone stepping out of a door on any route through the building, regardless of whether it could get you to your destination quicker, when it could have been avoided by walking, i.e. going slower, is an incident where speed is a factor. You could be taking a scenic route that takes longer even when running, not getting to you destination quicker but speed is a factor. So if police reports show speed as a factor in only 5% of incidents then it's going to be accurate.
      Just in case you didn't know, there's a list of over 80 possible factors that police can list as contributing to an incident (not accident, accident suggests no one is at fault, they're officially called RTIs (Road Traffic Incidents) (at least they were the last time I checked)).
      destination 'quicker' is by not stopping when you should, not necessarily by speeding or driving too fast for the conditions.

    • @cjeam9199
      @cjeam9199 4 роки тому

      Mark Wright Nonsense. Going slower definitely compensates for people not looking, because it gives them time to get around to looking, and gives them longer to react when they do finally get around to looking.
      Getting somewhere quicker is precisely speed related. That’s what speed is. How far you’ve gone versus how quickly you’ve got there. If you’re in a hurry, so decide you won’t follow the walkway that’s cleared and marked and end up tripping over a cable that accident could have been entirely avoided if you slowed down and taken the route you were supposed to. That is precisely an accident that is caused by speed, because it could have been prevented by slowing down.

    • @markwright3161
      @markwright3161 4 роки тому +1

      @@cjeam9199 How do so many collisions happen in stop start traffic below 10 mph compared to anywhere else if speed is the cause?
      Getting somewhere quicker isn't "precisely speed related". You can take a shorter route and avoid stopping where you should to get there quicker and not travel any faster in the journey, i.e. you can drive a major, high traffic flow route at all the posted speed limits then get to your destination quicker by taking a shorter, less traveled route and avoid stopping at traffic lights and still not exceed any posted speed limits, even though smaller roads tend to have lower limits. You can get places quicker with a lower average speed.
      The main way drivers cause incidents on major routes when they're trying to make up time are by failing to stop when lights change, failing to give way at roundabouts and failing to merge in turn where lanes end. They will have a very similar average speed over the course of their journey as every other driver as they cannot drive faster when they're in the flow of the rest of the traffic, but they cause incidents by jumping lights and the like previously mentioned. They're not going at a greater speed so how can a non-existent greater speed be a factor in the incidents occurring?

    • @cjeam9199
      @cjeam9199 4 роки тому

      Mark Wright All of those things will be speed related, because people are trying to beat the lights, get into that gap, and get ahead of the person in the next lane, because they’re all trying to get where they are going faster. Collisions in stop start traffic at 10mph happen because people are impatient due to being stuck in the stop start traffic, because they want to go faster so they aren’t late to work, or can get home on time.

    Favourite: Clip 10. OK so you may be concerned that the cammer is going to have a stroke but that looks like a deliberate barge-in by the truck driver. There is plenty of room behind the cammer's car for him to have moved over to the left lane safely, yet he chose to carry on until the last possible moment before moving across. With a wet road and rain, plus heavy spray the truck driver should have known how selfish and dangerous his move was, as the car he barged in front of would have been covered in spray from the truck and may have lost control on the slippery surface, braking to avoid the truck - maybe the cammer left a bit of a gap to the traffic ahead for this very reason- slippery road, spray, allow a bit more of a gap for safety only to see an impatient truck push in. Over-reaction to this move? almost certainly but it looks like it was intentional by the truck (he signals as soon as he has passed the car) and was totally uncalled for, putting the cammer into danger all for the sake of the truck saving a couple of seconds of journey time. Clip 11: cyclist was lucky, Skoda made no attempt to get into the right lane before cutting over to turn. If the cyclist had been a car instead, what would have happened? Sticking your indicator on does not give you an automatic right to make a move across someone else's path

First and foremost on that list would be implementing a law similar to Germany mandating the creation of an emergency lane upon joining stationary traffic. In effect this would mean something like lane 1 must form a queue as far to the left as possible when traffic stalls, similarly to the right for all other lanes thus creating a gap between lanes 1 and 2 for EV's. This would in effect remove the need for a dedicated hard shoulder for emergency access since the space is created dynamically when traffic stalls enough for it to be needed since ultimately this only really becomes essential when traffic stalls and queues bumper to bumper. Blue lights and exemptions are usually adequate to make progress in flowing traffic but a complete stall is another matter.

      To be fair, the cammer overreacted, but the lorry had loads of space behind the car. Bear in mind the size of the lorry and the fact that dashcams make it seem that there's more space than there is, and there was probably barely enough space in front of the car for the lorry. Having said that, I do agree with Ashley's comment though - the cammer needs to chill out.

    Clip 6 - yeah blind spot but no excuse for not moving your head and looking imo
    Clip 11 - Blind spot or not the car is aware he was there, He saw him in that lane seconds earlier at the give way.
    The cyclist didn't accelerate both of them are on the brakes (check his levers), he knew the danger he was not going up the side of it.
    You can't completely stop every time a driver could do something crazy, the car turned right from the left lane without indicating (until after the turn) Cyclist slowed and left himself enough room to be able to avoid the car.
    Taking it to its logical extreme... If you were cycling along a major road and a car was waiting on the minor would you stop just in case the driver decided to pull out on top of you? you would have put yourself in that danger by cycling in front of him.
    Clip 13 - Malory could see a junction ahead but matched speed just behind a large vehicle that was turning in this would make her completely invisible to any car that would be waiting to pull out, didn't she put herself in that position like the cyclist in clip 11?

      For clip 11, never assume a driver saw. "Looked but did not see" is a very common factor in collisions at junctions, perhaps the single most prevalent factor.

    The absolute arrogance of the truck cutting in at the last minute forcing the car to take evasive action borders on 'driving without due care'. There was ample time and a huge gap behind the car to get in for the exit, but no, he must get one more vehicle ahead. Totally pointless as he has to stop at the lights with the traffic.
    The car driver however as Ashley says does himself no favours by losing his temper. Far better to have complained to the company and sent your clip in to them (and the dvsa) so they could educate their driver etc. The lorry will no doubt have multiple cameras that would back up the car driver's evidence,.
    Unfortunately with all that horn blowing and actually trying to keep the truck out with his road position, he has lost the moral high ground. The horn means 'I am here'. The truck driver knows you are there because he has deliberately decided to carve you up, so all the anger means nothing to him.
    Before anyone says the truck driver may not know the area etc, the incident was at Darford and the company are based at Purfleet a few miles away. The fact the driver exited at the leftmost exit of a multi lane slip shows he knew the area. Possibly as a bulk vehicle he is doing multiple short trips in a day and is frustrated at the traffic impeding him.
    Not worth arguing with a truck, they know they will win.

    2:46 Blind spot was no excuse for that. Besides a mirror, you are also provided with a window for your convenience.
    11:57 Seemed quite reasonable for that car to come out in that gap. I live in a town known for its roundabouts and you really have to take these gaps or you will be sitting there all day.
    13:18 That can happen when parking on the wrong side. Someone in a van parks in front of you and blocks your visibility when you want to get out.
