- Some cars stand out from the crowd because they are beautiful or super fast, but some actually stand out due to their shear hideousness! Blown head gaskets, no shocks left whatsoever, rusted out and trashed body work; Uncle Buck's (John Candy's) totally beat 1975 Mercury Marquis Brougham is the true definition of a Jalopy car for sure!
I present to you Uncle Buck's jalopy Mercury!

When I was kid (5) I absolutely loved this car. The smoke, the backfire, even the shot shocks. I wanted it so bad when I was to grow up.
and did you?
You ain't alone, mate.
I still want it 😂
@@cameronrichardson3108 Just bought a 78' Grand Marquis 460c.i. 90k miles no rust. Can't wait to drive it. It runs, just needs brakes addressed and a few odds and ends...
I bought one a year ago, just started driving it yesterday! My employer recognized it and recalled this movie! What a joy it is to drive, not perfect, not like uncle bucks, just impressive in ways you can’t imagine! Exact same color inside and out with that big old 460!! “Build back better”… LOL
I loved the ending scene that involved the car.
Chanece: tell your neighbors I’m sorry this thing had to park in your driveway. He’s getting a new company car this week.
Buck: like hell I am! That thing’s good for another hundred thousand miles!
Don’t know why but him barreling through the school zone at sonic speed always has me dying every single time 😂
“She’s faster than she looks.”-Every jalopy owner ever.
Anyone who's ever owned a beater car can definitely relate to this video.
My first car was a beater that burned oil and had bad piston rings and would smoke blue going down the road.
@@retro8696 and it sounded like a shotgun 😀
I’ve got a 21 year old Saab convertible with a mouldy roof and knocking engine. Sounds close enough.
I now own a 20 year old car and its started to act like this lol.
Oh I loved my beater! A 4 cylinder manual shift Subaru. A exhaust ventilation pipe melted into the engine driving with the windows open was a must! I had to sometimes do the driver door open pushing then popping the clutch into 2nd to get it started. It used to sometimes stay on with the ignition turned off the engine was chugging like it would pop back on as I’m walking away after parking it.
No offense to the Batmobile, Bond's Aston Martin, the Trans-am from Smokey and the Bandit, or Doc Brown's DeLorean, but this is the greatest car in the history of cinema.
Hahahah
I had a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am as my first car. It would diesel when it shut it off and shoot a massive fireball out the exhaust. Sounded like a .50 cal going off. I remember one of my friends referenced this movie and we were dying laughing
🤣🤣🤣
My uncle would like to scare people by switching the ignition off and back on again while moving. Made a nice backfire
to me this movie wouldn't been half as funny if Buck drive a well maintained car.
I love how the rear shocks are just nonexistent 😂
Just the springs
my 86 thunderbird is just like this going 60 mph down the freeway
Nonexistent, and the motion of the car is exaggerated. Even without shocks, they don't bounce that much, or that long.
@@xaenonmy dad had one that sure did
@@xaenonthe heck they dont. One of my cars the back shocks were rusted thru blown out. .. .. going down this highway the one bridge if you was going 65-70 mph the bounces lined up with the expansion joints just right .. every joint dipped down. Budump budump budump budump. Whack the bumper off the road . Bounce. Scrape again. Still bouncing. Bouncing bouncing bouncing. . .... Then my buddy asks me how TF i can drive this thing its been bouncing obnoxiously for the past mile..
The way the couple says “Your cars on fire” in such calm voices gets me every time 😆
80s
the James Brown scream before the backfire hahaha i'm dead
Same
Also the kid with a sooty face in one of those shots in the first school scene
"WAAHH~"
'POW!!'
Pro trick: watch movies at Flixzone. Been using it for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Aries Jay yup, I have been using flixzone} for since december myself =)
The entire movie was a riot! I've seen it several times but never get tired of it. I'm so sorry John Candy is no longer with us!
Karen, he IS still with us; as long as we all remember him and love his movies.
@@KeyboardBuster 'Tis true!!
I love how the car is around 10 years old and is completely trashed, engine worn out and body rusted. You would have to seriously neglect a modern car to have that happen.
The car probably ran fine. There’s no way that 460 engine was bad.
You'd have to have seriously neglected a 1975 car, too! (My car is a 1962 Morris Major Elite and those things were still running around in the 1980s, cared for or not.)
The car was actually 14 to 15 years old in 1989
@@liamclarke5761 cut me some slack bruh
@@jasona8964 no
I've had Jags with oil leaks and rusty tail pipes, it's classic; roadrage from anyone and you can smokescreen them with a little gas. "Your car's on fire." "Nahh it's just a little oil."
I had a 1991 Saturn SL1 that would do the same thing it had bad piston rings and it would smoke just like this lol.
I guess the British equivalent of Buck's car would be an old V12 XJS (failing its MOT)
0:54 No matter how many times I see this part, I always laugh my a** off. 🤣
Buck abruptly leaving Bug in all that smoke cracks me up every time lol
FOR THOSE WHO SAY ITS A LINCOLN: the hood ornament on the Lincoln and mercury is basically the same, but the headlights have crowns on them, making it a mercury. They were the same car anyway
There actually two totally different cars almost no parts are the same cept the engine, trans and maybe the axle if it's a nine inch. I own one and found that out shortly after hunting for parts. Some interior parts can be swapped over maybe a bumper or two but not much.
This is right that’s a mercury grand marquis the people calling it a Lincoln think it’s a Lincoln continental! The sister car to the mercury marquis!
@CameronSeavey-qm8xz Sister car in frame design maybe but I believe even the wheel base is different on these cars. Also there are no interchangeable body panels. These cars share nothing besides maybe some suspension / drivetrain components
@@ricochetey they share what’s called a panther platform it’s the body style and frame shape
I've got the ford service manuals from 1978 and it is clear that the Ford LTD and Mercury Marquis shared everything but their cosmetic appearances. The Lincoln continental on the other hand was the one that was somewhat different .
I just noticed the "Abandoned Auto" tag on it haha
Me too. 😄
I'd buy that 1975 Mercury Marquis off of his hands for $12,000. I'm a guy who's mostly into 70's vehicles, 80's, 90's even the 2000's! Also a couple from the 1940's and 50's. But what really like about it is the suspension, probably seems pretty fun to rock it side to side actually. People may think this beautiful sedan is "ugly" and "outdated" per say, but I say that it's pretty cool looking and I don't care what people think.
I'd buy it from him too, but no for that kind of money! I'd maybe, maybe at the most pay 2k for it. I feel like even that's too much though.
@@plumbingstuffinoregon2471 Well I see a lot of value in this 1975 Mercury Marquis and with that type of money, he could buy a Ford Thunderbird or a 1985 Toyota Cressida.
You can get these mint condition for like $5000 lol. The Lincoln and Ford's too, because nobody wants them. And in this condition, like $3000 probably
I want them. Does that make me a nobody does it?
Well I just bought one a couple weeks ago for 300 bucks! I just have to find an engine and transmission and a few other parts for it. The body is super straight and nice though.
I loved bucks car man r.i.p John candy you absolute legend I wish you were still around
*The Beast* 🚗💨
I too have become a guy that pulls up to the front no matter the location.
Imagine a car like this today 😂. Burning oil, bad shocks, gasket gone, knocking...
My 02 deville 😂
You mean like a Jeep? 😂😂😂
One of the all time great movie cars.
I agree because it's old.
@@hectorlopez1069 Because it's a classic 1970's RWD tank.
1:01 *Ezal* "ohhh I'm shot!!"😂
Let’s be honest who doesn’t want a cannon in their tailpipe?
My best part of this classic movie. The smokin Mercury car got my attention.😇💙
That man was a god!! Try that these days. When he pulled right up to the front door.
Was wondering about this
A couple years ago a car back fired near a school in my area and the whole building went on lock down because they thought it was a school shooter. Pretty sad how paranoid everyone has become.
@Burleon
Your point?
@Burleon
I agree with you, I fucking hate Starbucks, but they originally came from Washington in the 70s, so blame them for that, not us. And I don't really like that grungy crap either, but that came out of just about every big city in the 90s, not just Portland and Salem, so you can't really blame us for that either. I'll admit, Portland played a big roll in that, but once again, it wasn't just us.
@Burleon Yeah dude, you're thinking of Washington.
Man I want that shit wagon so bad
My great uncle owned a 77 Thunderbird too. Its basically the same, the mercury Lincoln and Ford's, but his was like riding on a cloud. So much woodgrain, leather, nice am/FM radio, it actually got ok gas milage, one of the sliding headlights didn't work, it was stuck up. Same color, white landau top. Got wrecked in an accident and scrapped. You can get these bad boys for under $5000 good condition easy. I daily drive a 1937 Pontiac silver streak to highschool haha. It backfired until I swapped out the spark plugs then it was good
I used to drive a 10th gen Thunderbird that bounced up and down just like this Marquis, if my mom saw me on the street or was driving behind me she would always remind me of how funny the car looked from the outside just jumping around : D
2:33 i feel good, i knew that i would.
Favorite movie car of all time right there!
John Candy was a legend
Say what you will, the thing fired every time after no more than half a crank
He'd better hope he never has to park that thing outside a military base. They'd think they were under attack!
Just bought a 78' Grand Marquis 4dr its not uncle bucks but still pretty fun and reminds me of the movie.
I miss them big old beasts. Fun to drive. Roomy and comfortable.
A 1975 - 1978 Mercury Marquis two door... I thought these cars were actually attractive back in the day.
Dued its a Lincoln mercury cars dont have that head light covers and the turn signals
Mercury and Lincoln is different the roof is different the head lights different the trunks different the turn signals are different the grills different rear lights different every one is wrong about that thats a Lincoln
@@joshuaryanferguson3702 wrong.
Give Google a try bud.
@SuperRegal79 nope lincoln
It's a 75 Mercury Marquis
You either own that car, or you OWN it.
My fav movie car aside from the Green Machine in Planes Trains and Automobiles... They must've purposely loosened the head bolts for this one !!!
I love how happy he looked when he called the backfire after they pulled up to school... that happy "YEAH!" gets me every time!
1977 Mercury Marquis Brougham 2 door.
Let's seeA couple things, blown headgasket, rod knock, burning oil, soft suspension, couple pistons not firing, (likely spark plugs) also it's winter, so more smoke
It's good for another 100K.
When your car is really high on gas and park it There goes the bang Lol 😆 🚗💨 😆
The true car of OG's
0:24 I never realised before just how fast that car is travelling...! He is really shifting it...😲👌😉
YOUR CAR’S ON FIRE!

I want this car irl,i would absolutely love it, the trashed motor, thrashed shocks and the bodywork itself is a work of art
and how can you forget the patented backfire
Wonder whatever happened to that thing, probably sitting in a back lot somewhere.
It could be going under a long term repair
Scrapped most likely
I would like to buy it.
@@nutsinpuss9563 You're not the only one.
@@sabbath7081 I have been trying to find out for over a year now!
Love that scene when they are rolling up past and into the school drop off .....POW
People today would pay hundreds of dollars for that flame tune he has 🤣🤣😂
My first car back in 2013 was a triple blue 89 fleetwood. Had leaky valve cover gaskets and would diesel every time you shut it off and smoke. Loved that old car.
0:24 Anybody gonna talk about him pulling up to the school like a bat outta hell?! Lolol he was PUSHIN that Mercury. “She’s faster than she looks.”
I had a mercury that ran like shit like this fer years, one day I tore the engine down an rebuilt it an it didn't wanna run enymo. So I tore it back down an put alot of the old parts back in it an the thang ran like shit, but never overheated, an would fire up an go in any weather. Paid 20 bucks fer it an a carton of Marlboro reds fer it back in 05. Drove it til 2015 when someone decided to set it on fire. When I found out who dun it I stole his brand new Escalade and I sold it to a chop shop fer twenty bucks an a carton of Marlboro blend number 27's.
When the engines run a little hot and low on oil tend to deform internal parts so that why dont wanted to start again with new parts
One of my friends first car was a 79 Lincoln with bad shocks!!!! 😆 🤣 😂
That thing would bounce for days!!
Id like to see that car blowing smoke all over driving in California
Good ol days of leaded gas yes kids lead in the gas
Probably used sea foem for the filming of the car
I had a car that dieseled like that. Didn't backfire though lol
I’d love a mercury like uncle bucks, broken shocks included
I can imagine John Candy using that steering knob
I remember hearing the Director kept the car I knew one of John Candy’s distant relative even he had a heart like John to remember real life could be funny but also sad but live it to the full
back in the early 70,s in high school got a 1961 Chevy 4 door and a 283 engine it use about one quart of oil for every 500 miles exhaust broke off at the cross over pipe and later only had reverse but still drove it to school for a couple of months, at basket ball games we made sure it was parked next to other teams bus at the end of game so they had perfect blue smoke drifting in the bus
I'm still trying to figure out how that car backfire and make that loud bang like it did in the movie. Lol 😂 make people fall over like goats that pass out and then back on their feet.
A couple things, blown headgasket, rod knock, couple pistons not firing, (likely spark plugs) also it's winter, so more smoke.
Great idea to piss off the neighbors hahaha.
You can mess with the ignition timing so it sparks when the exhaust valve is open so it backfires like that
How did they get that thick smoke?
@@carsonholtorf8233 severely neglected engine as others posted. blown gaskets, fouled plugs with oil passing the rings with the timing off.
YT channel VEGA660 found a 78 Mercury Marquis in a junkyard and fixed it up as a tribute car to Uncle Buck. Great video of him getting it running again.
Got to love that car!😆😆
I noticed in some shots he has a cb antenna.. 102 inch whip. Side mount..
More then respectable for a radio enthusiast even today for that band
My type of ride right there.
Now that's what I car a beater car
It probably took a ton of work to make that car run so poorly, and yet so consistently at the same time. It always had to start and run but look and sound like shit doing it.
I love that shit box
Comming in hot. Going out with a bang!
What song is being played when he left Chicago that night. It’s not on the soundtrack and I can’t find it anywhere.
Same! I’m looking for it
im trying to find me a car like this grew up watching this big fan of john candy and the car lol

The car is a legend!!!
That car is a true marvel of engineering.
Hard to imagine, this is a 12 year old car in the movie. Imagine a remake in 2024 where Uncle Buck would show up in 2012 Ford Fusion (largest Ford sedan offered at the time)
Car on fire! Car on fire! Isn’t that Tesla motto?
Reminds me of my current car. Infiniti Q56. My shocks, so I came here to show my 14 year old how similar our car is to UB’s car 😂 I need a better car! The

Well, that's why these are called bangers
Barnaby Jones drove a brown 1973 Ford LTD 2 door coupe for several seasons of the tv show like Uncle Buck's Merc. Dependable model for a private eye. ;-)
Yeah, they added a bunch of oil into the fuel system, removed the shocks to make it bounce. Do an in depth on John Candy.

The actual car that was used is in Southern Kentucky. I forgot the guys name that owns it but it is on display, or was on display. Its somewhere around Cumberland Lake if im not mistaken. This also owns the REAL very first cayman car from the series.
Nah nah nah! It's just a little oil!!😂
my car smokes like that lmao its really bad
How did they get it to smoke like this?

i had a car like this. but it was a 1995 mazda xedos6 that i bought for 150 bucks. whenever i gave someone a ride, i would offer paintchips as a courtesy. i wouldn't take her beyond 3000 rpm, because that's when the valves started rattling. bmw drivers where scared of me. because what kind of a maniac would feel safe racing you in THAT. i felt like the king of the jungle, in a "mentally abused tiger" kind of way.
