It doesn't make grammatical sense in English. Using it for indefinite pronouns can make sense because you don't know or haven't specified a gender. It's an imperfect sol'n and I'm hoping a better one comes along because of that.

Archaic (mis)usages from before prescriptive dictionaries not withstanding, using a plural-case pronoun for a singular-case definite-pronoun is always going to be ambiguous.
Using it for indefinite pronouns can make sense because you don't know or haven't specified a gender. It's an imperfect sol'n and I'm hoping a better one comes along because of that.

That is correct English though. You use they when you don’t know any more details. Example: The UPS dropped off your package. O where did they leave it?
