BUZZFEED DIDN'T HIRE ME BECAUSE OF THIS QUESTION

  • Apparently saying straight white males are cool, will cost you the job at Buzzfeed. Totally joking and I have to say that so no one takes me too seriously. I have nothing against Buzzfeed. I still take the occasional quiz and watch the occasional "Try Guys" video, this video is merely me telling you my experience with the whole interview and job application process.
So, I follow this twitter page that tweets every time there is a social media or digital media job that opens up. I saw an opening for a Video Intern for BuzzFeed Los Angeles. I clicked the link and saw about 20 openings for other jobs on the BuzzFeed site, so I thought why not? I make videos. Why not apply to become a video intern at BuzzFeed?
I've definitely heard all the negative press BuzzFeed has been receiving lately all the way from race baiting to fake news, but this wasn't really a concern of mine because I didn't plan on making that kind of video if they were to hire me. From what I've read, you're pretty much free to make the kind of content you want as long as its not too far right. I planned on keeping it as non-political as possible. Now I've see all the "Why I Left BuzzFeed" videos, and what concerned me was how much I could be involved in creating other content for my own youtube channel and perhaps other brands. That was a problem I decided I would worry about later.
I filled out an application, created a BuzzFeed styled video for them, and turned it in online. After about a month or so, I heard back from them again and did a video interview for them. This interview involved no humans. I sat in front of a webcam and answered pre-set questions within a timed limit. After that, I moved on to the next round for an in person interview, where I faced 5 BuzzFeed employees who would grill me about my internet knowledge. I think I did okay answering question after question, until they asked the one that would lead to my ultimate rejection.

I hate buzzfeed but I gotta side with them on this one. When you need to hire someone to work with you, you can’t just do it out of sympathy. You need to actually see their work and what they’re fit to do, because they do get _paid_ . If it’s just a free job, then it would seem ridiculous to have this many questions. But if it’s a paid job, for something like getting videos viral, then you really need specific types of people.

Other companies will ask a similar type of question which is, “where do you see yourself in 5 years?” and if your answer includes being in a different company, then they won’t hire you.

Guys if you're a Buzzfeed fan, the jokes aren't that serious. As I stated in the video, written in the description, and explained to a few people in the comments, this is not an expose nor is it a vendetta on Buzzfeed. It's me simply explaining the interview process with added humor.
I Respond to Angry BuzzFeed Fan Comments Here: ua-cam.com/video/ps9wr7UDPys/v-deo.html
There are plenty "How I got my job at Buzzfeed" videos. This is a video about "What not to do" (in the in person interview). If you for some reason are you applying to be a video intern, take notes and good luck. Here is the video I turned in as my entry: ua-cam.com/video/tD7X9ag8nZA/v-deo.html

It is okay to be a feminist, just don't be a purple haired angry modernised version (the kind that leaves a stigma on those fighting for proper equality). Buzzfeed are usually far left which is usually worse than being far right. Antifa who think of themselves as 'far left' go around attacking the Far Right and smashing up historic statues. Buzzfeed is basically propaganda for the Far Left. Purple haired 'feminists' would also attack a woman, either physically or verbally, if they disagreed with them.

Of course I tell them the truth sometimes, in terms of knowledge and skills. But if you're looking for a job you've got to make them believe that you love their company and you want to work there forever!

Well, that's a pretty normal reason to not hire somebody. If a worker is not satisfied with what they are doing, then they won't be happy with that job and automatically do it less good than someone that's dream job it is to do said thing. Though I am young and never applied for any job yet so maybe I don't know, but from a common sense standpoint it seems logical.

    • @jaybirdy

It’s hard to get your dream job early on(less than 30 y/o). Most jobs you’re gonna get in life are jobs that pay the bills or jobs that provide more experience in order for you to get that “dream job”. Most people now a days do not work in the same place forever. So I think it’s pretty lame that she got rejected from buzzfeed just because of that one answer. She won’t work at buzzfeed forever, she just needs experience so that maybe she can move on later in her life and make movies, if she still wants to. Just because something isn’t your dream job doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it either. The first job you get isn’t usually your dream job anyways. If your first job is at McDonald’s, should they fire/not hire you because it isn’t your dream job? Hell no! They should fire/not hire you if you’re not doing what you’re supposed to be doing or you’re lacking something.

Yup and at the same time that your supposed to be boasting about yourself in an interview and making you seem like the best of the best your also supposed to be propping up the company your interviewing at to make them seem like they are the best place ever to work for, job interview 101. When I owned a business if a potential candidate made it seem like we were going to be a between job en route to their dream job I didn't hire them, I'm not investing my money in someone who wasn't going to stick around when the job type I had going was what many people have as a dream job. I'd rather sink my time into training someone who knew less but actually WANTED to do the job I had. If you want to get into Hollywood movies then there is a chance buzzfeed is wasting time on you while your looking for other things to do in the movie world.

obviously you have to say something that has to do with BuzzFeed in a BuzzFeed job application interview, so if they ask you what kind of content you want to create for the rest of your life has to be something that has to do with them not something to shows that they are just a stepping stone for you to eventually do movies. I know that maybe wasn't your intention but that's exactly what it comes off as. it's just the truth that in job interviews you have to say things that you know they will like and not be 100 percent truthful is just the way it is

I don't think it was because of that. But recruiting managers and that kind of people know when you are not passionate about a job. If you don't like buzzfeed and buzzfeed style videos, it automatically you are not a good candidate. Especially compared to other people that live buzzfeed, have never missed a video, and dreams bout going there sincethe company's first steps. That's all. "I don't really like buzzfeed" "I find most buzzfeed videos are cringy but.. it's a job" this kind of thinking won't get you into any job honey.

AuroraLalune I don’t think that’s what is being said - I think what was meant is that, when compared to people who are clearly passionate about buzzfeed, you won’t get the job. Of course people do jobs because “it’s a job”, but far less so in the entertainment industry where most people go into it knowing it’s cutthroat and underpaid and actually do it for the love of it. Equally, even if not in the entertainment industry, most people still have to fake enthusiasm about their jobs even if they’re just going into it for a paycheque.

      AuroraLalune two things here:
      1) I think it is absolutely plausible to be passionate about the style of buzzfeed type videos - short form videos, designed to be informative, amusing or in some way entertaining. Even if you absolutely loathe buzzfeed, I think you can still muster some form of passion for the medium
      2) I genuinely don’t see what is so horrendous about Buzzfeed as a company. Obviously it isn’t perfect, and sometimes can be seen as stifling or profiting off individuals’ creativity, the same as LITERALLY ANY ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY, but by and large it is a company that gives a platform to people to create media, treats its workers decently well, and is a diverse and inclusive workplace (even if people think it’s biased against cis straight white men, that at the very least is a balance to the large majority of companies that lean the other way). I think it is totally plausible to be passionate about Buzzfeed.

The best advice I ever got while interviewing for jobs in LA is that no company wants a candidate who views the position as a “stepping stone” to something else. They want to hear that you plan on staying with the company (even though you probably do want to move on eventually). If they hear that you view the position as a path to something bigger, they won’t hire you.
