If you can learn how to hit this shot, you will NOT be stuck at the same level that you are at now. Every single player knows how to speed up the ball and hit it hard, but how many players know how to slow it down - away from their opponent's optimal strike zone? In this video, you'll learn exactly how to use your opponent's pace against them!
Hi! Welcome to Briones Pickleball.
My name is Jordan Briones (co-founder of PrimeTime Pickleball), and I've started this channel to provide you the best pickleball content on UA-cam. My goal (and passion) is to help you become the best player that you can be.

Great video. My drill partner and I have been trying to master the reset. Especially like the suggestion (around the 7:20 mark) to stay back and not come in if you reset is high. There is a tendency to want to rush in no matter how high the reset is. The progression through the steps is something we can practice each time we drill. Thank you.
Awesome!
Jordan - I tell everyone about your channel. Your videos have great info - just what we need to improve our game!🎉
Thanks RJ !
That's the best 10 minutes on the internet today! Very well thought out drills for a critical skill...thank you.
Awesome thanks!
It also helps if the person feeding you the balls can accurately hit to you. A lot of times they aren’t good at placing the ball.
Lol. Yes!
Get a different partner lol or maybe this is too advanced for them, it’s not a beginner friendly drill tbh
😅
This is a good skills progression. Thanks for the video. The ability to reset is one of the biggest skills that separates players, which I'm still trying to master. Thumbs up.
Thanks!
Another excellent video! I really look forward to new lessons each week. They are no nonsense, focused and immensely helpful. The time flies while watching them. Thanks and please keep them coming!
thanks Walt!
Appreciate this video. Been playing for two months and the feedback I got last week was that I needed to slow down and learn to reset. Gonna practice these drills this week!
🤙🏼
really enjoy these videos which show how to deal with particular shots/situations. we don't receive this much detail during our club instruction. thank you . your videos have been a tremendous help for my game how to experience.
Thanks John !
Killing it again. Another great breakdown with real world drills you can do on the court with excellent tips. I’m going to try it this weekend.
Thanks!!
Thanks for the progression, great coaching points J!
Np Mark!
You are the best pickleball coach ever. I hope one day I can train with you!
😊
Great video again, yep I pop it up many times on my resets , thanks for the drill tips!
👍🏻👍🏻
Really well done. Your content is excellent and your instruction technique is great. Wish I lived in your area for in person instruction.
Thanks Sue !!
Nice job Jordan - the positioning was on point. I usually visualize the Nike Check Swoosh when resetting off the bounce helps me remember the stroke.
Appreciate it!
These are great reset drills. Thanks!!
Thanks! 😎
Excellent drills and a 💡went off for me as a beginner
Great to hear!
5:00- Great lesson and drill exercise. Thanks
Np Alan !
5-24 great drill! What also helps me is to remember to get the arc of the ball over MY NVZ.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Access your shot is a critical issue! The most important information in this video
Thanks Jordan. Thinking we will practice this cross court too 🤔
Awesome Jim !
Oops!! Assess your shot not access. Duh! LOL ☺️
Lol
Good video. This helps with my reset and pace. Slowing down is essential to my game. Thanks again.
Np !
You are a really good teacher. I enjoy these videos
Thanks Brian!
Thanks! You have the best drill partner!
I do !
Just what I was looking for. Thanks!
👍🏻
Just got the new Black Ace. The pop off this paddle is crazy!! Taking some getting used to for blocks and dinks. Knowing your paddle habits is key too. That's where drilling is so important. Thanks Jordan.
Awesome Kimbo !
Please rate the spin and power of the black ace over a paddle such as CRBN1 13mm .
Thanks Jordan, I'll be working on this drill for a long time...
😊😊
Jordan, Always the Best. thanks for your video sessions. Bill
😎
I have gotten my mind to see that I needed to slow down. this video was great for me. One thing I noticed in your returns is that the height of the ark of the ball is not over the top of the net, but about two feet on the returnees' side of the net, so at the net is not the top of the ark of the ball. so the ball is coming down when it gets to the net. giving a much better chance of the ball landing in the kitchen , not on the line or out of the kitchen. It's a much better percentage shot .
👍🏻👍🏻😎
I love the 3 progressions for resetting the “banger”😮😊
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you, Jorden. Great drill
👍🏻👍🏻
Bingo……. Great drill, reset is critical to great Pickleball ty
👍🏻👍🏻
Jordan-- you keep forgetting your most important tip-- to be sure and spin the paddle between shots! 😁 -- which, of course, you do all the time-- but I I'm guessing it does help in keeping one's grip looser on the paddle?
I guess it can do that….
Love it. Thanks.
Thank you too!
Great teaching job
Thank you!
I always enjoy your content 🙌
I appreciate that!
Great video as always. Hope to apply to my game soon. Thanks.
Awesome Michael!
@@BrionesPickleball anything on left handed players strategy when playing doubles with a right handed player would be helpful
Thanks, always excellent content.
Thanks Jay!
Could you do another more specific video on resets against aggressive balls which land at or near the feet?
Same concepts. Here’s one
ua-cam.com/video/M_2112ohgwE/v-deo.htmlsi=fT4gT0iX78Y7SS0N
I find myself trying to be too perfect with my resets and a higher percentage than I want going into the net (rather than a little more margin over the net, but at the expense of them being a little high). Until it is mastered, I assume it is better to be a little high... Also, what are the key things you look for where you choose a reset over something more counter-offensive? Obviously shots at your shoes need more defensive resets, but it's the ones torso height that could be countered under the right conditions...and it's those conditions that I'm interested in. Thanks for all the great video's Jordan!
I hope to make a detailed video on this sometime. It’s a learning process that can be different for every player. You have to experiment to see what balls feel good to reset and what balls feel good to attack.
When do you elect to reset vs being more aggressive with a counter attack?
That’s based on a few different variables, I’ll have to do a video specific on this soon!
Awesome video! Do you generally stick with a one handed reset for your backhand reset technique? I've seen some players advocate for two handed resets especially for balls that come to your feet at the center of your body
I use and teach both
Thanks, Jordan! Quick question-is the difference b/t a “reset” shot and a “5th-shot drop,” the ball bouncing for a drop shot and a reset is a volley (with no backswing)?
They are the same, it could be off a bounce or a volley, they are just both the 5th shot, and both resets.
Thanks, great drill
Thanks Scott
@@BrionesPickleball my biggest problem is that I've been used to playing way too fast and I do better when I slow down, but my experience comes from playing table tennis and I enjoy being aggressive. But I experience players that like to be bangers and it sharpens my eye hand coordination. I started learning pickleball this March but I really need to get back to basics and this drill will certainly help
This is a lot like the 2 & 1 3rd shot drill from your former site. But of course, why not adapt a good drill for a new purpose? Excellent!
I created it. lol
Do I hold my racket in backhand position when we are preparing to take the drive? Beginner here
It depends what you mean by that. If someone is driving the ball, I do tend to hold it towards my backhand side .
You mention a block in your lesson. Is the difference between a block and a re-set grip pressure?
No, sorry I use those terms interchangeably 😊
I always hurry to the net but you stayed in the mid area. Is there a best location? Is ‘out of position’ a thing in Pickel ball like it is in paddle ball?
Watch this, you’ll learn a lot more.
ua-cam.com/video/gyMo0I_xNo8/v-deo.html
Great video on this topic. Well done. Two quick questions:
When you split step, are you on the balls of your feet awaiting the ball?
What is the paddle angle in the transition zone vs at the NVZ?
Yes. Paddle angle will vary depending on the height of the ball.
can you explain this further@@BrionesPickleball
Will do this in a future video
How hard of a grip are you using? Light grip?
3-4 out of 10 grip pressure
What grip do you recommend? Continental or eastern?
Depends on the player/shot
Jordan, my brother.
Great video, I was just doing this with a student the other day...
Looks like you're now using the Project 003 paddle..?
What made you change?
I'm using the Air-S2 and not crazy about it..
What was behind your change??
Thanks,
Kev-
I use both; it’s a touch paddle. I like touch paddles for touch, so that’s why I prefer it right now.
@@BrionesPickleball
Ok, that makes sense...
I'm going to stay with the S2 for a while and see what happens....
Take care, have a great holiday....
Why do you spin the paddle in your hands in between shots?
Old tennis habit
Why not cut it, ie, like a tennis volley so you have better control and it clears the net lower, ball stays lower?
You definitely can, but much more difficult, and unnecessary
@@BrionesPickleball not sure why it's "unnecessary" if one can execute it (would decrease pop ups, too).
@luckyuliveHI sure you can hit it that’s great. I work with tennis players transitioning to pickleball from all over the nation and some start with a slice reset, although most end up just hitting more of a lift because it’s more efficient. Pickleball is all about efficiency and consistency.
@@BrionesPickleball ok, i see what you mean by efficiency...less movement, stroke production. Note: nearly every sport is about efficiency and consistency, it's not unique to PB. Appreciate you taking the time to respond... Just started watching a few PB vids to understand the nuances of strategy, style of play n how it differs from tennis.
This is great in soft drives, however I play against bangers and their drives are VERY FAST AND HARD so my resets are getting popped up and I’m getting killed. Worth mentioning- my grip is very lose and I don’t push the ball at all but they have super hard shot and tremendous speed. Any advice on that?
This is the foundation of resetting, I use the same technique when the ball is coming at me at 50+mph.
As I’ve been coaching for a long time, my guess is you are in fact pushing the ball in some way or form, or it would not pop up.
The more stable your paddle is at contact, the less you’ll pop it up
@@BrionesPickleball you probably right. I probably push it without realizing
@ingas8365 also, if you aren’t well balanced, you won’t be able to reset well.
Reset Progression attempts by beginners often fail because the hand eye coordination requires a perfect middle of the paddle hit. Hit it on the edge of the paddle by mistake and into the net and you'll wish you had swung harder.
True, but if you hit it off center it’s most likely going into the net anyways.
Is your grip hard or soft?
Softer, maybe a 4 out of 10
@@BrionesPickleball so when should your grip be a hard grip? When you are slamming it and when else?
Damn you guys going full selkirk. Someone must be getting paid
😊
I think the reset is the hardest shot to master than the 3rd shot.
😊
Why not reset with two hands?
ua-cam.com/video/M_2112ohgwE/v-deo.html
Reset
👍🏻
Me: Watching how to slow it down, in 2x
Lol
We see you cheating and using the 003 to reset lol.
Caught me
I must say it’s a little annoying watching you habitually twirl your paddle before every shot. Otherwise good videos
I’m not sure why players care so much about that lol
