Sealing A Gourd Water Bottle - Bees Wax

  • Sealing a Gourd Water Bottle with Bees Wax is not a difficult task. Once the Gourd Water Bottle is crafted...heat bees wax, pour it in, move wax around and pour it out. The first couple drinks could generate a slight waxy taste, but it will eventually fade. Avoid direct sunlight or over exposure to the sun as the wax can soften and water can penetrate the gourd walls.

    I'm from Eldoret, Kenya, East Africa.
    We use gourds for Mursik here.
    Mursik is fermented milk, also called maziwa mala in Swahili.

      @John These days, we use sand paper to smothen the interior before use, but im not sure if we've ever coated them.

    I like to use a green branch or vine twisted up inside the gourd to scrape out all the gourdmeet. I find that actually works a little bit better than placing rocks or pebbles inside and shaking it to get all the seeds and gourdmeet out.

    Boil gourds in half bee/paraffin at 350° for 10 minutes. Heats the gourd pores up and it sucks the wax in. Doesn’t matter how hot it gets outside they will never ooze wax and will last damn near forever.

    Hey Donny I’m a huge fan and was watching how you make arrow heads and blades and I wanted to ask how long did it take you to learn this skill I’ve always wanted to learn since I was like 12 and I’m 25 now and skill have no clue how to even start so any advice would be great. Also love the videos you are very knowledgeable and very entertaining to watch can you do a longer video on blades and arrows out of rocks

    There is a variety of Gourd that grows to a very large length. I have some here that reach almost 0.6 meter. It can carry a lot of water.

    Thanks brother, can’t wait to harvest my gourds, think I have about 30 on the vine right now. Hope all this rain doesn’t lead to a fungus or a rot of some sort 🤙🏻

      Gourds will start getting mold on them as soon as they ripen, whether you leave it on the vine (and sometimes they fall off) or take it off and dry it elsewhere. Unless the moldy area is soft, don’t worry! It’s supposed to do that and is fine in all kinds of weather.

    Question - Wax in the wild is hard to get in many places. So it made me think could some tree sap or pine pitch be used instead? Would the water turn toxic? Or be potable...

    I bought this cool Chinese gourg bottle online and it's pre-waxed with beeswax but I noticed that the taste of beeswax started showing up after a couple of hours of carrying water. What can you do to make the taste better or should I just re-wax the gourg myself?

  • @caked3953

    I don't know how I feel about the beeswax. It's a nice (and good smelling) ressource, but the only beekeeper in my family allways talks about how polluted old beeswax is.
    I trust her quality beeswax, but I would not mold candels or coat things with random wax.
    Does this coating last for years? Foes it need recoating?
    I wax coated wood, but nothing that stays in constnat contact with water
    A very fascinating old method!

    Could you cut a gourd in half, scrape off any gourd meat, apply wax, and seal it back up?

      @Alexis-sj1mc Рік тому

      Do you mean to use as sort of a Tupperware container? Or to use as a water bottle? If the first option, yeah that might work to keep stuff fresh and relatively air tight. But if you’re talking about the second option, the cut would be wayyy weaker than the rest of the gourds and would be basically useless

    • @PorchHonkey
      @PorchHonkey Рік тому +5

      I think that it possibly could work if was a good clean cut with placement of the cut being so both sides married back up nicely and then finished off by tightly wrapping the exterior of the gourd with sinew or animal skin sheath.
