I fell down an adhd blackhole on gourd research. They were the first globally traded item, and appeared pretty much everywhere about 10,000 years ago
Thanks. I had the urge to do the same. XD
Thats SUPER interesting!!!!
Good Gourd!
I had to.
@@SkillTreecould make a tea version of your coffe briefcase
@@celiashen5490Gourdgous wordplay!
What would be a great idea is if your tea set was self contained for a journey or something. Like maybe have a way to secure the cup as a lid and then mount the whole thing to a bag on the go or something.
Yeah a screwtop would be amazing. Just screw 'm together for easy adventuring!
I was hoping they'd connect and house the tea while not in use. Might have to order some gourds and prototype it myself for when I get to go back to LARP.
Love this idea! I will get to working this out!!
@@SkillTree Maybe a larger gourd, one with a wider opening to act as the teapot, and then a smaller one that can fit inside the bigger one for the cup(s)? 🤷♀️
Just a theory.
@@SkillTree my thought was to slightly elevate your Concho, and maybe adding to the spout form the outside by soldering a small lip. Then too wire loops on your cup. Loop one over the concho, then press the other over the spout!
Probably not water tight like some are talking about, but a nice way to keep the set together!
Totally getting Uncle Iroh vibes from this :)
Aside from the booze, he’s pretty wholesome.😉🤣
I actually use nontoxic food safe resin to coat. As long as I’m careful when I turn it to coat it. It works and I also use it to make custom bottles with mica and edible sparkle dust.
What brand do you use? I have had a beast of a time finding a good food safe resin
@Skill Tree the main concern related to the use of fully cured epoxy resin as a food container is identical to the concern surrounding other plastic items that hold food, BPA leaching. A hot drink does increase the amount of leaching compared to a cold drink but many containers also use plastic with BPA so if you are replacing a plastic container your consumption of BPA doesn't change. Additionally as this device would only be used a couple days per year the increase would not be a problem, mostly because we are constantly consuming BPA all the time and have bee since the 60s
I love how it ended up! As you were making it I was just thinking how awkward it might be to drink out of (particularly for hot stuff) given the inward angle of the lip, so I think you made the right choice to pivot. I can imagine if you'd planned from the beginning to make the teapot, you could have sized the rings to kinda slot in together so your lid is a little more secure.
I'm pretty excited about that scorch marker though, had no idea that was a thing, got some research to do!
Well as an argentinian person myself I've seen some mate gourds if that shape and size but we do have a filtered straw type thing called a bombilla that helps us drink from gourds like that
Right! When I saw that marker I got so excited!!!
@@SkillTree stumbled upon them a few years back. It's crazy some of the products out there. Amazon can be almost as financially dangerous as it's namesake can be to your health. Lol
I don't understand how this channel doesn't have more subscribers. It deserves more attention. I dont larp or anything similar. Im just a creative who dabbles in way too many things. I love getting to come here to learn and get inspired for which I am very greatful. Now if you excuse me, this was just the excuse I needed to give in to the desire Ive been fighting to look into planting gourds to make into birdhouses.
So glad you are enjoying the content!!! Happy growing!
Cool project man, Argentinian here. Just wanted to clarify some terms, because we really are a bit complicated. The drink is called "mate" not "yerba mate". Yerba mate is the name of the herb that is used for the infusion ("yerba" is an old Spanish word for "hierba", herb). The recipient from which the mate is sipped is also called mate. Anyways, as always, awesome content. Cheers from the south!
This is good to know! I really want to try mate now. I will by the stuff and give it a try!
@@SkillTree amazing! Look for someone to share it with, we usually sit in a circle and the one that pours the water in (ceba el mate) passes it around. It's kind of a ritual here. And we love people learning (and adopting) our culture. I think Zoe Saldaña is kind of addicted to the stuff
@@JuanmaAmagliani 100%. I can't wait to learn more. It sounds like a really nice ritual
1. The legs didn't adhere because the skin of the gourd is not just waterproof, it's glueproof too. I didn't particularly like those legs so yay failure!
2. If you can find a tea strainer that's the same diameter as the opening on the pot, you'll have an easier time with using loose tea. I bet you can.
3. Every single project I've ever worked on is a repurposed version of a previous project I made. I think it must be part of my creative process. Or I just can't leave things alone.
4. Great job!
Oooooooh, good call on the strainer! I will need to look and find one!.
@@SkillTree That looks almost the size of the drop in strainers from the cups David's Tea sells? I might be miss reading the size, but if the opening is roughly 70% the size of a standard skinny coffee mug it should fit?
Two episodes with no Leather!! You finally did it!
Just realised... I own exactly the same model of drill as he does. Well, at least I know what to use it for now.
It's a really good drill 😂
Mmmmmm tea.
Glad to be here so quickly
We are glad you're here too😁
Really neat little set. Those gourds are really versatile. I'm concerned about the metal rings you used along the rims, though. Unless they are food-safe you may end up with metals like nickel, lead, aluminum, etc. leeching into your drink. Also, your beverage may heat them up while you're drinking, which gets pretty uncomfortable on the lips (I know this one from personal experience with a camping mug I purchased a while back).
That was myu concern too. I know that aluminum is not good to use for hot drinking vessels, and uncoated it isn't good for cold either. He did use Aluminum for the wire in both so that will come in contact with the drinks.
Yes! Finally, now Cl3ver has his hot beverage container!
This is great. It's surreal that gourds are so versatile.
I love the tiny cup, and the fact that you're using it as a lid while your tea steeps in the larger container means that your cup is heated a bit before you pour the tea. The set looks amazing!
Peak maker energy when you talk about that synergy between you and the materials! Those moments are *chef kiss*
For a proper porongo or mate gourd you have to cure it with geniever
Good to know!!!
@@SkillTree the antibacterial properties of the alcohol will help keep the gourd from developing mold Wich is really useful if you like sweet máte
Well, looks like I have a new project!
As someone who drinks his coffee out of a cauldron mug I love the cauldron look of the little cup
You could seal it with linseed oil. It hardnes after some day or weeks and is food safe and enogh heatresistent for tea/coffe
Make sure it's the raw oil, sometimes sold as flax oil, not the variety with chemical drying agents commonly sold for wood finishing.
That sideways squint is classic.
It would be interesting to find a way to attach the cup to the teapot for traveling. Maybe have some threaded metal?
Fun fact, that specific cup for Yerba Mate is a Porongo* (The straw is Bombilla). I got a silicone one a few years back. It has a very specific taste to it
I need to try the drink! I am intrigued now lol
That's a porongo the bombilla is the straw thingie
The gourd if it's made of gourd is called a porongo
@@velazquezarmouries OOHHHH ok thank you ^^. I tried it because a friend recommended it. Cl3ver, I will warn you that if you get the leaves, rinse out the first steep. It is, from what I have been told, extremely bitter. They do make canned versions now though. I got one at Kroger
@@Zeldur it haves the same effects of coffee
I just found this channel a couple of days ago and I am obsessed! 😍
Glad to have been able to lure you in!! Welcome to the dark side😉
Would be cool to clean out the gourd, carve designs throughout, fill with resin and colored LED lights, leather strap/quick detach belt loop around the neck, boom, mages spells stored in a gourd. Can even use different colors and such for different spells.
That'd be so cool! Could probably conceal the battery pack/on-off switch in the bottom of the gourd.
Can we all appreciate the wonderful pup placement 😂❤
Most epoxies don’t do well with heat.
I love your channel! Great video!
Live and learn lol. Thank you for watching!
This is exactly my thought. Just like direct sunlight makes craft resin flexible, the hot water from the kettle was enough to make the epoxy flexible and lose traction.
This is too funny not to share. I tried to watch this after surgery this week…and I drifted off! Apparently your voice is quite soothing! Beautiful project too. I did come back and watched all of it. Lovely results.
Your builds are what got me started as a Renfair vendor, but c'mon man I can only stock so many items 😅 gotta add this to my wares
Btw how would you want me to credit your designs?
With these gords you can shape them using your own molds. Its a simple and easy thing to do. it does take some time and care yet you can make quite a bit of some nice shapes.
Anything can be shaped if you are willing to put in the effort to make them and watch them daily.
Uncle Iroh would be proud.
Having the metal rings be magnetic with each other is what I thought you would have done.
GREAT idea!!!!!
Awesome job, nice to see your touch on a regional inspired craft "*Smiles in argentinian*"
It was so fun to try out! "Smiles back in best Argentinian I can manage"
Next, you should make a leather harnass to hold the tea cup and kettle together as you transport it.
Awesome project! Please note that when working with gourds it is imperative to use a respirator as the dust is highly irritating to sinuses, lungs, throat etc. The dust itself is not toxic, but it can behave like asbestos in the lungs. Always wear a respirator 😊
Good gourd that's some gourd stuff.
Damn brother. It's like you've been reading my mind lately.
hey! love the content and exited to be early! i actually was watching this with a mug of tea in hand. just a suggestion: could you try making more bags ? i oddly love container videos.
Sure! I love containers tooooo lol
For getting the perfect circle for the twisted wire, wrap it around a pipe of the desired diameter a few times. After a couple wraps, the circles will be more concentric and you can get more in one go (similar idea to making the rings for chain mail).
I love this crafty Ryan Reynolds
Add a small mesh strainer inside and you can pour your tea without the leaves going into your cup.
Genuinely love the desk, have a similar one at home I use, but if you are genuinely experiencing back issues, you need to sort out that chair my friend. It isn’t helping your posture when sitting at all.
Once again a lovely video and as a tea drinking larper one to add to my list of things for Conquest and Drachenfest.
Look forward to bumping into your alter ego in character in Germany in the summer.
All the best Daniel aka Shogun Oto
I love your outlook on how to bounce back when projects don't go exactly to plan! Love the adaptability!
I think you need to carve yourself a kuksa. I'm sure others have suggested it, and it's a bit of dedication to one hobby, but they are just really cool. Love the videos, and love seeing projects change half way!
It'll be great for your herbalist Halfling Hench Healer, good video
Oh yeah, the scorch marker is pretty cool.
For the cup. On the bottom portion just tie some sting around the legs and the pressure from the string will keep the legs in place.
Remember the word oops. Comes in handy alot.
Better than the string of curses that USUALLY comes out🤣
Use a large cork to hold the pieces together and store tea in bags in the cup part
Uncle Iroh would aprove. Well done!
A good idea, but I have a couple observations and suggestions. First, hot liquids make metal hot, which can feel uncomfortable against one's lips. Second, using two metals, steel and aluminum, might create a unwanted galvanic reaction. Third, if you wanted to make a pitcher, maybe leave the upper part of the gourd so that you can tie handles in the neck like you did with the water bottle, and; fourth, you can carve a spout. Fifth, you can create a set of cups by using the tops of several additional gourds, and; sixth, you can use the bottoms of those additional gourds as jars with lids of cork and/or wood for holding dry herbage for teas, tisanes, and tinctures or other sundry items.
Maybe use a small neodymium magnet to keep the two halves together easier
how can you not subscribe to this absolute gem of a man!
Got Gourds grow for this years projects along with Luffas. The arties farties in me has ton of ideas. Wine cups and Goblets are going to be on the list top.
I love the twisted wire look as in my culture we have multiple jewelry items that have a braiding or twisted wire look, known as Nameja/Namejs jewelry, its Latvian which are linked to Vikings and our rings look extremely similar to ancient Viking rings, its so cool.
I literally had the project not turning out how I wanted it thing today, lol. I'll find another use for it eventually
Anyone else just automatically click like and then watch the video? 😆
I’m growing gourds for the first time this year, definitely probably going to try this
This sort of thing could be cool for my ranger who has a magic bottle that makes infinite tea. I don't drink tea myself so I had no idea what that would look like, but maybe it could look like this.
There's another thing you can use for future items. BAMBOO. There are so many things to make, and it can be found in almost every temperate climate. I've made cooking, drinking, eating items, weapons and more cheaply
The little cup is so cute! I was thinking it would be nice if the two openings could nest together rather than balancing the small one on top. I'm actually shocked that the lip you created pours so cleanly; my commercial coffee pot dribbles more!
Awesome as always!
Dude i love these videos so much. I could watch them in an active warzone and still have fun. In fact, im watching this while falling asleep hopefully I finish the video before I
The only thing I would have added/ changed to this is adding a hinge and a clasp of some sort so you can store your large tea bulbs in there before pouring in hot water perhaps.
I love that sweater! So cool.
very cool seeing you use gourd for a chimarrão set
I always see them for sale on my country but never knew it could be made by hand
Just watched your last videos. Idea for laser cuter, make some wooden coins with your logo on one side and a QR code on the other. Have a few in your pocket and hand them out at your larp events
That is a GREAT idea 🤩🤩
that came out gourd-ges
HA! I was a bit melon-choly today, but the more I read this gourd pun, the more it... grew on me and lifted my mood. Cheers
@@SkillTree LOL
I might have to pick up a few of these gourds. They seem pretty useful.
They really are!!
That's really cool. I always thought they needed to be sealed inside.
The gourds are super cute and the technic interesting and all- But the real question is where did you procure that epic sweater? haha
I love his sweaters! Every video, I'm amazed. Also, love the content
i do believe they make Baileys specifically to make sure you have a morning drink to help you day drink. You can't day drink if you dont start at the beginning of the day.
I would add a hook or strap to keep the cup and teapot together. Otherwise, I love this!!!
Love this one. Would be cool for day to day as well as larp
It would be cool to change out the aluminum ring in the cup with a magnet and then the cup would stick to the kettle.
just found your channel the other day and have watched a few videos so far, i love all these little projects and tidbits! one thing i will mention about the epoxy not sticking is that you did sand the aluminum but not the gourd! should always lightly sand both surfaces, especially organic type stuffs as stuff like the gourd has that waxy/woody outer surface that's meant to be non-porous, it's almost like trying to glue something to glass!
i like video 😀
Brewers pitch will make your other cups and water bottle water proof and heat/cold tolerant.
I honestly thought the two parts would screw together into one unit for easy transport but I kinda like how it turned out better.
This is the kind of stuff you get when the Artificer multiclasses into Druid.
Nicely done!
Really cool designed and crafted. Well done
Great job! Looks great!
Perfect!! I’ve been wanting to make a gourd!!
Love this stuff! Practical projects are the best.
You could make a ring for the smaller and larger cup to sit in.
Also, you can use a small piece of 100% cotton as a tea bag to keep all of your tea together.
Love, love, love your enthusiasm. Your skills are crazy mad!
I love this, I’m definitely going to have to try and make this after I’m done with my bookshelf
Have you thought about using Pitch to line a drinking vessel ???
Thanks!
There's another thing you can use for future items. BAMBOO. There are so many things to make, and it can be found in almost every temperate climate. I've made cooking. drinking eating items weapons and more cheaply
your gourd crafts are my favourites!! theyre all so awesome, its so cool how versatile gourds are
You might want to consider a replacement for the hot glue with the detail piece because you're using it with something hot and hot glue melts easily and with that sort of thing always seems to separate at some point.
Maybe you can add rope or something to secure when you handle the pot and also use the cup as lid? 0.0)?
I want to make a little wire screen nestled where the spout is to catch like loose leaf tea.
Great info. Your a real craftsman, thankyou
Thanks
This is awesome! By the way, the sweater is gorgeous! Where does one acquire such a sweater?❤
Bro. As much as I love when you plan something out and then execute it, watching your idea evolve was one of the most satisfying videos I’ve ever seen. I’d still love to see you do a gourd where the top part becomes a cup that also seals to the main body. Perhaps an internal neck that slides into the mouth of the smaller cup? And attaches to the larger vessel, but can still be detached. Just an idea.
Also, on your leather projects, have you ever thought of edge lacing? It looks super clean and adds strength and durability to the edges.
Keep leveling up, you.
I actually wanted to make a Mate with this. funky
