    When do you boil the gourd? In the dry state or fresh off the vine?

    Cool. What would you do if say you wanted to seal it. I've heard rubbing beeswax on it, and using melted beeswax for the inside is a way. Then you heat it to seal it in. Would you suggest that, something else or nothing at all?

    • @werewolf74
      @werewolf74 3 роки тому

      Thats one way I know of or If you made pine pitch, with charcoal and sap only (no scat) you could probably line the inside and it might even actually help to kill bacteria, as both charcoal and sap do.

    What do you think about perhaps using a different tool to scrape the inside? Perhaps something sharp spoon shaped, or hooked like the Mocotaugan? Time efficiency is valuable too.

    • @PrimitiveLifeways
      @PrimitiveLifeways  9 років тому +3

      If you are making these at home bend the tip of a butter knife for scraping. For smoothing out the inside take a j-hook (used in garages for hanging objects) and glue on a long thin strip of 60 grit sand paper.

    When you say you boil the gourd, do you boil it when the gourd is still green or you boil it after you cure it by drying it? I have a gourd which I had left curing for a 18 months and although it is dried, there are small cracks at the bottom of the gourd. Please enlighten me so that the next gourd I have will be hard enough to be a water container or useful like the one you had shown on this video

      +CAT G.Blondecat Thank you for subscribing. Yes, some of the gourds are soft right off the plant. boiling heats the shell and becomes hard. It also loosens up the material on the inside.

    Did you cut off a limb from a cedar tree and carve it down, or was the more to that plug? If the plug is dry when you cut to fit the mouth of the gourd, does it swell when the gourd is used as a water container? Can the innards of the dried gourd (what you scrape out) be used as tinder for starting fires as well - is there a use for it?

    Really groovy. Did you grow that gourd? What is the variety? I grew some bottle, birdhouse and other gourds but the shells aren't nearly that thick. Would you boil a dried gourd (dried properly on the vine until the seeds rattle around inside)? Do I have that right? Sorry for all the questions, thanks for posting this fun vid.

    You dont have to boil. Just let them dry out for a year. They get really hard as they age.

    • @PrimitiveLifeways

      I know some of the Cahuilla elders used to use crushed obsidian flakes and sand to clean it out. They would fill the gourd up and swish it around until the material loosened up.

    can't you just leave it in the sun to harden?

    • @nathan-oj1le
      @nathan-oj1le 9 років тому

      +randomhalofan292 If you do that the sun will pull the moisture from the gourd hardening it, but in the proccess it will crack it. The key to getting it right is to provide moisture while hardening it and boiling it is perfect for that.

    • @jerejere69
      @jerejere69 7 років тому

      randomhalofan292 I'm a year late but. Drying gourds is usually done by leaving it in a cool dry place for a year. It would get moldy on the outside but people like that because it gives the gourd different colored spots and most people like that design
