My grandmother used to grow gourds and then make cute little birdhouses and batboxes with them. I always use to make small cup like things out the smaller ones as a kid. They're really great for storing all kinds of stuff.

Small pebbles with coarse sand will make cleaning the inside easier. This video gives me an a idea to combine your idea with my previous gourd exterior Ancient Greek etching artwork.

Just a minor tip, instead of using only a small handful of pebbles get quite a bunch of them in there and then do the rotation. It will work much better and faster. It's like a rock tumbler almost.

Is awesome that when some one make a great coment like this just to Help a litle bit you will not got any coment from the creator meanwhile other coments get the creator attention tho🤦🏼‍♂... Im just saying that it seems the guy dont like any help at all or maybe he could make a coment about your idea but nop, its kind of weird and im not saying that the creator coment is necesary but its reflect a lot thoo😅

I like to wax the inside of any of them I'm using for liquid, but like you said, dry is the more utilitarian way.
I like one beeswaxed and the rest dry.
I also like to melt wax and rub it into the outside surface and polish it with a cloth, it seems to hold up much better over time.
And all that chaff from inside the gourd makes incredible kindling.

Gourds are related to squashes. If you can grow squash, you can grow gourds. Some gourds are even edible. If you have a short growing season, start your gourd seeds indoors & transplant the seedlings as soon as the ground & nighttime temps are warm enough. Gourds are virtually plant it & forget it.
