We brought 10 chickens into our sheep barn and made a great discovery! We let them free range the hay and droppings and lay eggs in hung boxes. The huge benefit is that they scratch up and aerate the hay/poo which causes it to compost at an amazing rate. In 12 weeks the top is dry fluffy straw and 6cm down is rich black compost ready for the field. The animals leave each other’s feed alone and stick to their own water and at night the chickens roost in the rafters and the sheep just know not to sleep under them. Interestingly hoof issues have dropped to nil! Everything else is normal. Free eggs, rich soil, lower density compost product that breaks down at double the normal rate.

I am TRULY impressed at the way you maintain the outside premises of your farm. What caught my eye was how the trailers were lined up perfectly in line. When I had my farm the look of the outside area was most important to me also. The old adage holds true for me- You don't get a second chance to make a good impression. That Gallagher System you have for keeping records is just awesome.

It is easy to understand why you fall in love with these lambs. It happened to me so many times as a youth when I raised show steers for the Austin, San Antonio and Houston Livestock shows.
The 4-H and FFA system is designed to prepare American farm kids for animal agriculture but I could never adjust to the possibility of eating my four legged friends at the Night Hawk restaurant later in the year. The Night Hawk Company bought many of the award winning steers at the Austin show in those days.
It must sound silly to most folks, but that experience, which was basically the same as raising my pet for slaughter, pushed me away from the industry. Although I farmed for many years, I never raised the animals that ate the grain I produced.
Sadly, in this flawed reality of human existence, the ultimate problem with survival is that regardless of who and where we are, somebody has to be the food.

  • @jhutch1681

We eat a lot of beans. It's not uncommon for us to have meat, potatoes, two veg and beans at a meal. I love to cook once and eat twice - leftovers are easy and tasty. One of our favourites is stewed beans with onion, garlic, butter, and maybe some lime and herbs (cumin, oregano, basil). With more ambition I might add frozen or dried diced veggies, mushrooms, celery... what ever is in the frig. We also love hummus. Any bean, any nut or seed /nut butter, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, salt, cumin and garlic. I throw beans or lentils into soups along with whatever else is in the pot. I add them to meat dishes to stretch the protein. They are even good in pasta sauce. Thanks for all your hard work :)
When you plant cover crops, do you still have to let fields have fallow years?
When I see the hard work, the long hours, the seven-day weeks, I wonder what retirement will look like for you and Mark. I'd love to hear what the long term plan might look like...
Love seeing Jess! She is such a sweetie, and your kids are SO fortunate to have been taught your and Mark's work ethic, and to realize that their contribution is important. They will be ahead of the pack in their future endeavours.
Those lambs literally do put a smile on my face. Thanks for sharing💜

Thanksgiving is a harvest festival, it's been celebrated since people ever started farming. The Christian church added celebrating it quite early in its history. Both the French Catholic church, and the British Anglican church had Thanksgiving traditions. So, as European Canada was started by the both the French and British, Thanksgiving was celebrated in Canada from the time of the first settlers. It is a month earlier than the American Thanksgiving because we are a northern country, and harvest is at least a month earlier here.
Sandi and Mark are still harvesting because they are in the very south of Canada.
Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving next month!

It's such a dichotomy between how we (well, my family & friends) wear out Blundstones and you guys. I'm literally afraid to get mine dirty, they're like "special" boots, while you wear them as they are meant to be worn-for working! I gotta change that. They look so much better "toughened up," and are SO COMFY for anything, I can imagine working in them is heavenly!

Don't salt your beans until they are about cooked through. It will make the skins tough. Also black beans make great veggie burgers. Drain beans after cooking take half and mash or put in food processor, add back to beans mix well. Add cooked 1/2 cup rice, corn grits or Quinoa to 2 cups of bean mix. Good way to use left over grains. Add 1 can of greens, collard, spinach, mustard. Can add chopped onion, garlic, any spices you like.Add salt and/or pepper to taste, my husband and I are salt free due to high blood pressure. Makes 4 to 8 patties. Fry in olive oil or if you must can be fried in any vegetable oil. About 3 to 6 minutes per side. If you freeze them in parchment paper you can bake in oven for about 20/25 minutes at 375°F I am a Certified Chef.

Baby bestfriend should be named Toffee or Coffee or Carmel because of her little brown head. I hope she stays like that her whole life. Just the sweetest almost like Billy but even more so. I just think she's adorable!

@@MobyDicksWife I found a good one by using google took me to the cooking channel website for the Black Bean Chocolate cake with Buttercream Frosting. Picture is of a double layer round cake. I also use my food processor for it to really grind the beans to mush and use it to finish the recipe

Also Black Bean Brownies! Yummm! Process one can with it's juice, and substitute that for all the liquids called for on the box of brownie mix. I like to add 1 egg, though, to lighten them up a little.

That brassica looks like kholrabi which is turnippy and kind of peppery sweet like cabbage. They are good sliced thin in salads or boiled and !ashed like potatoes.
