    The “Brown” tone refers to EVH’s unique sound which is heavy in distortion but also warm and earthy.

      I had heard he called it that due to the way his variac dropped the voltage and it made the tubes look darker.

    • @StephenCameron
      @StephenCameron 3 роки тому +13

      It's because he used a Variac to run his amp at 90 volts or so, so it was like an electrical "brownout" (as opposed to a blackout. Voltage drop as opposed to no power at all). That's what I read in the guitar magazines back in the '80's and early '90s anyway.

    I think it's called "brown," as opposed to another color in reference to the fact that the sound came from reducing the voltage going to the amp. Sort of like a "brown out" with regards to the power grid, which is a reduction in the power being supplied as opposed to a "black out" which is no power at all... so I guess the "black sound" would be acoustic guitar by that reasoning👍

    • @Chriscrunch2
      @Chriscrunch2 3 роки тому +12

      Oh and in my opinion the Katana metals beautifully. For a solid state amp it really stands out and pushes alot of sound. Unlike older tech, it doesn't sound so tinny and for around 300 bucks for 50 watts you get a tonne of amplifier. The modeling software can give you so many different tones.

    At some point, Ed said:
    “I want my guitar to sound like Al’s snare…..Warm, big and majestic.”
    He went on to describe his brother’s snare drum as having a sound that is “brown”. In Eddie’s mind, this was the perfect word to describe Alex Van Halen’s warm snare tone - (“I’ve always thought Alex’s snare drum sounds like he’s beating on a log” said Eddie).

      I have the mkii 50, I play lowest wattage and headphones 90% of the time. I’m able to get some good metal tones with certain patches / settings if I try to make my own. Try lambchopper’s patches, his death51 something is decent on mine I have a prs custom 24 and a Wylde audio Barbarian. And I’m not using anything but the katana speaker / Sony recording headphones. I do feel like you have to create your own to really dial in for yourself/ your guitars though because I’m really finding a lot of high end / tin can issues I’m not stoked about, and don’t know enough about EQ’s /all the settings in general lol also make sure your guitar it’s self’s volume is turned all the way up and then go down from there in that and the tone nob if it’s too much

    Oh my god...really? Well, there is this obscure, little known guitarist named Eddie Van Halen. And he worked on creating a sound his whole life. He started creating it with a Fender Bassman and then Marshalls eventually modified by Michael Soldano. Mr. Van Halen then used a Variac and hotter Mighty Mite pickups after robbing PAFs from his Gibson Archtop and not finding enough gain through them. He also played and experimented with other pickups and amps, etc.
    Mr. Van Halen did NOT call it the brown sound because it "made you crap your pants." That is not true at all, nor is it browning out the sound from the variac, but he described the tone as being "brown." Some people associate tones with colors. This is called "chromesthesia" or "synesthesia." And this was true for Mr. Van Halen. Hence "brown sound."
    Now to address a few other things... (Edit correction -- you were referring to the band Gojira, and yes, the pronunciation of that in and of itself was shaky and not the Bugera line of amps. It was hard to make out what you were saying in one viewing.) 1. You said "Bew-jer-uh" when that amp company/line by Behringer is actually called "Bew-gear-uh." 2. Katana is a Japanese sword that is associated with the samurai the same way that a gladius is associated with a roman legionnaire. It is pronounced, "kuh-tah-nuh." And lastly (although there were other errors, but it would seem like nit picking) the gentleman who was your guest is a "fine guitarist," or a "great guitarist." But calling him a "very good guitarist" is really a slap in the face to someone in a fine and wonderfully accomplished band (see, adjectives that compliment and seem rewarding, as opposed to condescending).
    You asked, so here is what you requested and more. I mean, you have the word "school" right in your name.

      @@dandrysdale2645 Yes, the way in which I write a comment on a UA-cam video and the way that I am the other 40 years of my life are ways in which a GENIUS like you can discern exactly who I am, as a person. With that information (and amazing leaps of faith and assumption), I can also be assured that you are "fun at parties." Can you say "irony?" The dude in the video asked. I answered and corrected a few other things, as this is supposed to be a "school." You just saw an opportunity to try to be a tool. Unsolicited dooshbaggery by you. Good for you. I have a feeling that I am much more fun at parties than you, dick. And I bet that you're the guy who gets rolled at those parties for dumb and hypocritical remarks like that. Wait, it just hit me...they don't even invite you, do they? ..i..
      (edit) -- I had to rewrite this reply three different times, as UA-cam, in their infinite wisdom, kept flagging my language and taking it down for very minor insults that were amazingly far from crass. So much for 'freedumb' of speech.
