It's because he used a Variac to run his amp at 90 volts or so, so it was like an electrical "brownout" (as opposed to a blackout. Voltage drop as opposed to no power at all). That's what I read in the guitar magazines back in the '80's and early '90s anyway.
This is such a great video. Metal being one of my favourite genres, but being an older dude it is hard to find others who want to play in the genre. I have the BOSS Katana 50 - and my daughter uses it.
Oh and in my opinion the Katana metals beautifully. For a solid state amp it really stands out and pushes alot of sound. Unlike older tech, it doesn't sound so tinny and for around 300 bucks for 50 watts you get a tonne of amplifier. The modeling software can give you so many different tones.
I think it's called "brown," as opposed to another color in reference to the fact that the sound came from reducing the voltage going to the amp. Sort of like a "brown out" with regards to the power grid, which is a reduction in the power being supplied as opposed to a "black out" which is no power at all... so I guess the "black sound" would be acoustic guitar by that reasoning👍
I have the mkii 50, I play lowest wattage and headphones 90% of the time. I’m able to get some good metal tones with certain patches / settings if I try to make my own. Try lambchopper’s patches, his death51 something is decent on mine I have a prs custom 24 and a Wylde audio Barbarian. And I’m not using anything but the katana speaker / Sony recording headphones. I do feel like you have to create your own to really dial in for yourself/ your guitars though because I’m really finding a lot of high end / tin can issues I’m not stoked about, and don’t know enough about EQ’s /all the settings in general lol also make sure your guitar it’s self’s volume is turned all the way up and then go down from there in that and the tone nob if it’s too much
for thrash metal high mids and low bass, not very much gain. Death metal kind of depends what kind of death metal but maybe a bit lower mids (like on 4) and maybe a bit more gain than with thrash.
At some point, Ed said: “I want my guitar to sound like Al’s snare…..Warm, big and majestic.” He went on to describe his brother’s snare drum as having a sound that is “brown”. In Eddie’s mind, this was the perfect word to describe Alex Van Halen’s warm snare tone - (“I’ve always thought Alex’s snare drum sounds like he’s beating on a log” said Eddie). From Rolands website
It nice amp,but no Bottom end to it, problem with amp it open back cabinet, and tone it not tight enough for me, Boss need make some improvements on stuff I mentioned.
Very cool tones! On the second, "Gojira like" setting, what parameters do you have under "Booster" tab for the Mid Boost (Drive, Tone, Bottom, Effect Level, etc)? Also, I get lots of feedback with the Katana. Do you use Noise Suppressor? I am not sure if using it affects the tone. Thanks!
He variac-ed the voltage lower like when a city has a partial power loss and has a brown-out. The power is less than its supposed to be. Hence brown sound.
It amazes me how many people don’t know why it’s called the “brown” sound. James Brown modified all of eddies amps. It’s really that simple. I love all the answers people gave you in the comments. Some are completely ridiculous. 🤦🏼♂️
Yeah it is a metal amp the tone studio makes that amp do what no other amp does it comes with 60 Boss pedals metal core metal zone HM2 turbo overdrive tube screamer and a lot more it's the best amp there really is awesome
I am looking at a Katana 100/212 MkII. It has the two 12” Katana speakers in it. Are the Katana speakers any good or is that something I might need to think about upgrading at some point with a couple Celestions?
Ok so I can't find a straight answer in these video's. My amp broke and I'm looking for something versatile should I go with a katana or a Marshall ibe been using fenders all my life and want to change it up
@@jeffreyquinonez8964 From the Boss engineers I talked to, you want to have your master up as much as possible and then control the volume with the level knob instead. This makes the Katana act like a hot tube amp being pushed as much as possible. Essentially you get that thick saturation you typically want from tube amps. Try it out it works great!
At least I wasn't the only one. Typical Canadians, they are so polite, they even apologized for being Canadian 🤣. Great video though! And Mandroid EchoStar rocks!
Yeah it got serious metal djent thrash metal and blues I got my Boss Katana MKII 50 11 days ago the tone studio makes that amp do what no other amp does I really recommend it no need for a tube amp there yo expensive the Katana is a great price
I don’t think they did it entirely seriously, if they did they’re probably doing this in a fairly professional setting with a camera crew. That all being said, why does it matter?
The “Brown” tone refers to EVH’s unique sound which is heavy in distortion but also warm and earthy.
Great job guys!
@@DavidBeinert Thanks David!
I had heard he called it that due to the way his variac dropped the voltage and it made the tubes look darker.

Itll make you shit your pants.
Nothing sounds better than hearing two guitars harmonizing together to make that dark, spooky sound
Tone mask
It's called Brown sound because it sounds so good you'll shit yourself everytime you hear it.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is actually close to the proper experience
i thought south park ahah
If it's brown flush it down but not this brown. This Brown is a keeper!
😂
I knew after that Steven Tyler joke in the beginning that I would like this video.
“KUH-TAH-NUH” like the sword, you were driving me crazy.
Noted, thanks!
The right Canadian pronunciation would be: ''KEH-TAH-NEH'' ;P
I've watched so many amp videos in this past week as I decode what best suits my purposes. 10 seconds of Steve's on the 50watt- I'm sold.
From whats song is the riff at 3:06?
I LOVE YOU GUYS FOR ACTUALLY SHOWING THE PICTURE OF THE SETTINGS, THE BEST VIDEO EVER❤️❤️❤️❤️

Is it the guitar that is giving it that chug sound or is it the amp? I have this amp and a Les Paul and want to get into playing metal

I want metal riff where the whole riff is just pinch notes
Zakk Wylde !!
After the burial-behold the crown
Gojira - Magma verse riff. Thank me later haha

I got the 100 set up like yours and it sounds nothing like that. My guitar is in drop D and sounds so weak.
Tune up the boost knob on the katana. That should help I think
Eddie came up with the name Brown sound. I believe he started of with Vox amps and then Marshalls
Do you guys have the patch? That sounds amazing
It nice amp,but no Bottom end to it, problem with amp it open back cabinet, and tone it not tight enough for me, Boss need make some improvements on stuff I mentioned.
Try the head with real speakers and cab. No complaints here. Chugs for me
They have the bass turned down too low. I run mine about 1 o'clock
Attach a piece of plywood to the back. 😎 👍

EVH set in an interview years ago that if he could equate his tone to a color, it would be brown.
How did you get both the channel 1 and panel button lit up?

Yes. I finally found the sound on the app. The metal core with a few tweaks was the sound I was looking for.
Brown is Eddie’s early sound… original equipment… you know it when you know it & hear it. (They started out calling Alex’s snare sound “brown”.)
How do i get the first tone?
You can see those settings at 4:53

We wrote that tune for this video. Hope you enjoyed!

3:06 is the most evil guitar tone I have heard in my life. Like pure evil.
The brown sound got its name because Eddie called his brothers drumming sound the brown sound and it got reversed to being called his guitar sound.
It is called the “Brown” sound because James Brown made the sound on the original 5150.
Yes.
Sounds pretty tight to me.
can it works with an 8 strings?
No. It will catch fire, I'm pretty sure.

Why were there RCMP at the Juno’s? 🤣😂🤣
How he said katana like Ann he must be Canadian lol

did u use a noise gate for this?
No noise gate in that chain
That outro sounds like an Alter Bridge song.
Nice jam
Thanks!
The “Brown”!sound originated with English rock bands
It’s a South Park reference the design team followed.
James Brown sound. Guitar tech Eddy

James brown the amp designer
Its called the brown sound because if you play it load enough it makes you shit your pants
