$38,500 MCLAREN Part 12 // Is the Engine Shot? Was it Too Good to be True?

- While the $38,500 McLaren does run fine, it's just smoking a lot with a ton of faults coming and going. Newest of the faults fleet is "Low Oil Pressure" so we may have a deeper issue somewhere..

Kinda hard to make the SRS module entertaining...but hope you guys are having a great day! 🔥
Your Car Has A Street Racing Syndicate Module Nice.
By the way it's possible to make a module interesting
Hey man I guess I'll tell you what no one else is. I'm 99% sure it's your head gasket. Damon and Dave literally just went through the same issue on DDE with their 720GTR. I would sincerely get it checked because the longer you drive it in that state the more damage you're doing to your engine and the more it's going to cost to get it fixed.
You have a leak by the looks of the galvanic corrosion on the tub and seat rails or maybe someone dropped a drink but I wouldn't expect all that mould from a spilt drink or maybe I'm wrong.
Looking great ❤
Good job on the detailing!
Probably have stuck piston rings. That “Marvel Mystery Oil” comment deserves consideration. Remove spark plugs and add a little in each cylinder, let sit for a day, turn the engine over (plugs still out) to discharge excess oil. In the meantime replace oil pressure sending unit
Whoever told you that a McLaren will smoke when left for while, doesn't own one. I do and it sits for months without starting and never smokes, at all...... Ever
I said if its overfull of oil. Or super old e85
Agreed John. The last one I owned I had for 4 years, drove it infrequently and it never smoked.
That wasn't what was said in the video, I agree if overfilled. However, in the video it stated that smoking is standard for a McLaren that has sat around. No it's not.
Worse case scenario, I have heard a story of the oil pump gear coming dislodged from the pump spindle.
Cut open the oil filter and look for metal debris. If there is a good amount, you're looking at bearing material from the crankshaft. I have seen this issue on Mclarens before.
Already did, it was clean.
@@TheInjaits going to be a headgasket issue
Get some foam inserts to stop stuff falling down the sides of the seat. Be a pain to keep removing the seats to get anything dropped
Hey Inja, I’m no mechanic but usually white smoke is indicative of a coolant or oil issue. The low oil pressure fault may be a possible reason for it. Also, when you change the spark plugs and coils, you could use a borescope to check the status of the pistons and bores. If nothing is obvious after checking the cause of the oil light and the pistons/bores, maybe try a combustion leak tester. Ive also seen that a faulty fuel injector can cause white smoke if it’s stuck open. Love the build and can’t wait for the next installment 😊
Great ideas! Will do when I get those spark plugs out.
The smokes blue not white so it’s oil.
I’m thinking turbo seals or even valve seats.
Man.. what an emotional rollercoaster... 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Seriously hope the engine's fine
You had a lot of sludge in those oil lines. Maybe put a quart of marvel mystery oil in and run it some to dissolve any remaining sludge then drain it again. If the low oil pressure light comes on though, don't continue running it till you verify if it's a true condition. May be some of that sludge has worked it's way into the where the oil sending unit is. On some engines there is a screen there that can need cleaning. The marvel may clean that out for you.
its understandable that you dont want to run it in its current state, which could risk scratching up the bearings
Those screens for the oil pump are there on mclarens
White smoke usually means coolant is getting into the combustion chambers of your vehicle. This generally happens because of a cracked or leaking head gasket, which allows coolant to seep into your cylinders. In extreme cases, you will need to replace your head gasket. At the first sign of white smoke you can try head gasket repair treatment to seal the leak before you do serious damage to your engine.
Oh man! After watching your work, I would recommend anyone who want to do this kind of project you need to do it before you reach 50 years old. If you do it too late, your back will hurt like hell.
Love the body kit‼️👌🏾 you made the right choice
It's going to look incredible!
I think the low oil pressure is a faulty sensor. The smoke I think is either an overfill or an AOS issue. Start the car and see if there is suction on the oil filler cap. Change the plugs and coils and maybe do a bore scope while you are there
Exactly what I think. We'll see soon when it's back from paint!
"But it runs fine" Whilst the garage fills with smoke LOL
Lolllllllzzzz you know what I mean. Runs great, no check engine light, just bunch of random codes coming and going
just james bonds car, smoke screen
Low oil pressure and exhaust smoke are not necessarily related. Whether it's oil or coolant smoke should be evident from the smell, however, a few simple tests will confirm some things. A Leakdown test (head gasket/stuck rings/valves). Combustion Leak Detector test (checks for combustion products in the coolant) or coolant pressure test.
It's probably just a PCV failure, worn valve guides or blown head gasket.
If the oil filter doesn't have metal shavings in it as you said. The problem is most likely something simple to fix.
It's probably nothing major.
For sure, 100% agree at this point. 💯
The oil has to be 100% right amount , if not the engine will smoke . I have see these problem on different super car rebuilds
So the oil level in an engine never changes when it goes up a hill, down a hill and around corners....🙄
It can cause an excessive amount of pressure. If it's meant to have 5 quarts and you put 5 1/2, the system becomes overwhelmed and oil will be dispersed however it can. Modern engines require precise everything.
@@stevo184also literally no. The oil remains the same level lol it doesn't disappear. Baffles keep the oil pooling on inclines or decline
@@stevo184 oil pressure change if you over fill :) ect
@@joseureste8257 Absolute bollocks. I don't think you know the difference between oil volume and oil level.
Now the seats are as clean as the floor in the McLaren Headquarters in England… Jay Leno said you can eat from the floor in The Factory
good vidoe, i had that happened to me many times, ordered a part and the old part starts working before new one comes!
I can second the marvel mystery oil for stuck rings. Just did this a couple weeks ago and it fixed it for me. But not gonna lie the amount of smoke looks like headgasket
Overfilled oil can make these smoke.
Thought about that too
Possibly, it's excess fuel due to the misfire conditions. Notice how the smoke is exiting the exhaust? It's more present on the passenger side bank. I think you're on the right track replacing the ignition components. In reference to the oil pressure sensor, it's certainly worth checking while you're in there and placing a borescope down the lines if it doesn't clear up with ignition alone. You'll get it 🥂
100%! Will do.
Hey Buddy, back again and still wanting to buy this McLaren! That said this time here to help. Stop running that motor, the amount of smoke is crazy! Get an endoscope and look inside the motor, also run a compression check on the cylinders. Obviously oil is getting into the combustion chamber so it's possible you got ring blow by, seal issues with the turbos, etc. With this being a dry sump and being in an accident I would pull the ignition fuse and hook up a pressure guage to the oil line and crank the motor to see if you are getting the right presure. I have more to offer if you need help, let me know and we can arrange a call.
Smoking so bad, might be too much oil or engine gasket is already damage. Checked DDE's 720 it's qlso smoking and after checking they found out that the gasket is already damaged.
his engine exploded dude, garbage over tune by gintani
Hard to get to parts aside. Normally I would pull the plugs and do a compression test on each cylinder, and in your case do a camera video inspection also inside.
Making sure everything looks ok.
No signs of bad oil rings etc., scoring etc.
Inspection camera everywhere honestly, intake etc.
Even a smoke , pressure test. No not the engine smoking, the smoke maker test for leaks
Man sorry to hear about the low oil pressure
The car has come a long way though!! It looks awesome!
Thanks dude! So close to getting it on the road.
Looks like one side smoking more than the other ,could it be rings sticking,do a compression test hen you change the plugs ,it looks like she’s definitely burning oil with the blue smoke, good look bro ,😎she did sound beautiful 😎
oil level must be bang on on this model, slightly over will cause smoking
I will definitely recommend to do a compression test and a leak down test, as well to check the oil conditions and coolant conditions just incase you have a bad head gasket and last but no least a oil change and spark plug replacement, also just as curiosity inspect the oil filter just to make sure you know 😉, good luck 👍
Check the channels for Mat Armstrong and Travarish, they had the same issue on their Mclaren builds with the low oil pressure and excessive smoking.
i love how much effort u put into ur passion mad respect ❤
Diagnose with a 20$ oil pressure gauge, may just be the pressure switch at fault (assuming it just has a basic switch) I replaced one today in a slightly less exotic car.
Inja ma Boi, hope you can get things sorted, I am sure you will do it. Have a great weekend bro.
You, as well 🔥
You wife sure has some patience, my own won't even let me play with Lego.
@@robblack7560 that's the truth! Women and make or break a mans happiness
Before anything else, at this point I'd do a compression test.
Ah man, I really feel for you, I don't like the look of that smoke, but it WILL be fine, I know it will.
Also... That camera angle at the end was insane, computer game vibes ✌️
Still not too worried yet. 🤘🏽
last time i has a low oil pressure warning it was an old hose that busted, i would just check all your oil hoses
no matter what the car look sick i love
I'm guessing turbo seals are out. just a guess since it's running fine. might be worth it to pull the exhaust and check with a bore scope
For sure will be scoping the spark plug holes and exhaust when I'm swapping that 😏
Great to see the car on the road Must be very satisfying. The rear camera view on the smoke while driving has a bluish tinge, and that unfortunately looks like burning oil. Either you have worn rings / cylinder liners or its getting oil past the valve guides. The latter is usually evident if you get a lot of smoke on letting the car sit for a while. Might also be oil from wear in the turbo bearing. I hope it's none of those things, but given the age, miles, and previous poor servicing history, you're looking at some major engine work to fix. I doubt its and overfilled oil situation that shoukd have cleared up by now give how much you have run the car after correcting the oil level.
McLaren . A actual dip stick was too simple .
No modern car has a dipstick anymore in Europe at least dont know about the States.
Change spark plugs first of all, and clean your oil strainer
The first thing i would do is change/flush the oil a couple of times and change the filter i know Matt Armstrong had the same issue with smoking but can't remember how he fixed it might be worth reaching out to him think DDE also had the issue. i certainly wouldnt risk driving it yet.
if it's not actively leaking oil, and you're putting oil in it, maybe it's the oil pressure sensor?
Hey man! I really enjoy your videos! Thay are amaizing!
Just watch Mat Armstrong video on his McLaren....he had exactly the same problem and reason was he overfill the oil...
Ah yes, wonderful McLaren ownership. I have always been suspicious of the McLaren engines, other than cost is why I went with the C8 drivetrain. I hope it is something silly, and easy to fix. Keeping my fingers crossed.🤞
daily driven exotics had the same problem and the engine was shot
Pcc fault is accumulaters😂 and or the wing messed up...always park it in track a dude said and buy a ctec charger NOT a McLaren charger believe it or not some of those have caused faults (per mclaren life) also thorney has a good video on how to reset the wing...also
LIFT CAR..TAKE 1 BOLT OUT and clean with wire
Watch Matt Armstrong video , and Tavarish . They both had the same problem and they fixed it . Best of luck all the way from Lebanon south of Lebanon 🇱🇧, and free l🇵🇸✌️

Isn't that the worst, when you budget x amount of hours to do "a job" and that job doubles because the amount of dirt/grime/mold?
I think the smoke is from a bad turbocharger on that side of the engine
May be wrong. But think you missig a knee airbag under the steering wheel.
Hopefully its just some turbo seals 🤟👽🔧🎬
I told you multiple times not to drive this until you had a certified mechanic look it over 100%
Buddy, what would a “certified” mechanic have done about a spontaneous oil pressure light from the future🤣
There's nothing more pathetic than some random dude telling a youtuber who has no clue who you are, "I told you so." Must be sad to try to live a life where you're trying to feign some sort of importance. Its ok man, someone cares for you somewhere I'm sure.
He is correct somewhat the car definitely has engine issues when the first oil change it showed there was issues water doesn’t magically appear in the oil The white smoke can be several things, oil or smoke every time he starts and drive this it’s just doing more damage instead of head, gaskets and new bearings. He’s going to be buying a crankshaft and camshafts. Too I am a certified mechanic and I know what I am talking about
Probably dde had the same thing happen and it was there head gasket . But u defintley drown the motor with too much oil and u probably have a ton of oil in the intake manifold and the turbos
@TheLinja. I like the white and black look. Are you going to keep that color look?
Cheers mate
Change oil pump and filter ? Probably very clogged. And runs straight to the top cylinder removing the spark plugs and using the same one again with seafoam let it seat for 5 minutes or 10 and start the engine is going to penetrate to the pistons ring and help to clear and then install new spark plugs. This work on my personal vehicle the was burning oil
Or you can contact bg products they have something is little pricey but guaranteed to work to clean the entire engine let me find out the video i will add the link

Morning mate
Any update brother everything all right
just do a compression test and see if it has a blown head gasket
Looks like it my need new turbo seals
Head gasket ??? Dde 720s was doing that. All so take of the air intake to the turbo and check if there oil in there
My mclaren was smoking like that also you probably over filled it
Been referencing your videos a lot. Thanks dude! 🔥
Head gaskets, DDE had a similar issue....
maybe watch the video from DDE they got the same problem with the mclaren now they need to rebuild the engine
Yeah I saw their video, I don't think it's the same problem since their wouldn't run after that, or barely start back up. This one runs great still.
@@TheInja i think, it cud be the head gasket not sure but it looks like it
You have a tiny weed smoking pixie trapped in the engine, use ice cream to lure it out.....
Could it be that the overfilled oil got to the turbos?
DDE Damon has the same problem with the 720s they have taken apart the engine it was something with the gaskets and cylinders
Only difference is theirs wouldn't run when is start smoking!
Cannonball garage they know how fix all maclaren they have you tube Chanel maybe contact them they are especialista
I wonder if you need to look closer at your turbos
You're the best
I was that much focused so when you started the car and the smoke started I was just blowing to the screen/smoke 😅😅
Hahaha
Normally I don’t give advice on UA-cam but definitely handle all your mechanical and electrical issues before you even think about any more cosmetics like painting, etc.
It's a nice car but I would just buy a late model Honda Civic for that price because the insurance alone on that car is over a thousand dollars a month.
Looks like you need a new engine 😮
u should do a Jetson Bolt Pro Review that'd be sick 🔥
Next episode we hellcat swap the McLaren
Hahaha
Did you actually get the oil level actually checked? Too much or too little can play havoc with some engines. The oil pressure sending unit could be going bad who knows. I have a old 99 Chrysler 300m that we hadn't been driving so never bothered to change the oil after the last time I did it. Needed to drive it while sisters main daily needed some maintenance and the oil pressure light came on and the upper end was noisy. Drove it home and parked it, figured it was done. Decided to change the oil and filter and oil pressure came back but still noisy. Gave up and after a month or so decided to try starting it and the upper end was quiet again and no oil light. Bottom end never knocked either.
It just had too many miles between oil changes causing all the issues.
Your car is probably low on oil and maybe the sending unit too. Unless someone ran it on super dirty and low oil but it seems to run too nice and isn't making any death noises yet like our car was doing.
Keep after it and call in the people mentioned if you hit a wall. They'll probably help, it's good content for both of you. Hang in there, you'll get it figured out.
Appreciate you. Haven't been able to check the oil yet. Next time I have the car back (it is in fact at the paint shop), I will be checking it. Runs fine, so I'm not concerned. Need to get that oil level checked first. Could be too low or too high, I have no idea. I have a good guess, but have never seen it with my eyes.
Im kinda thinking that youve gotten to the point where youve done all that you can do on your own. Its probably time to take it to an expert in McLaren engines. I dont remeber if you said this car was turbo charged, but if it is, it could be bad oil seals in the turbo/turbos... Other than that, blown head gasket, bad valve seals, or worn rings are the main things that could cause this kind of oil burning. I hope the motor is ok, but its not looking good. Sorry man, I know its a downer to see all the negative comments.
You need to do the oil level check it’s done on the car it’s self you basically got to do a checklist to get the car to run the oil level test mat Armstrong did the same thing with his in his last video on the McLaren I tried to put the link to the video but you doesn’t allow me to put it in the comment
The video is called ex stig crashed my McLaren I just rebuilt it’s on there
Ask Alex Palmeri at Legit street cars to help you. Believe me, he will know what to do.
Could be gasket or seals
Don t know why it all seems so hard.these cars are well engineered and easy to pull apart.
My lambo sux compared to working on the McLaren.
change the spark plugs
For sure will do.
Wierd thing about the smoke, i rewatched an earlier video of you driving and there was no smoke in that
Yep. Kinda strange.
no oil preaaure, just rev the engine, its a race car. not ment to be driven on low rpm.
Valve seals shot ?
I can't remember if this McLaren's naturally aspirated or not. If it's not, it's the Turbo's leaking.
10:59 not irony
Takeshi it to mclaren like the guys in the uk do after every rebuilt they will tell you whats up
Check and see if Nissan Sentra coil packs are identical.
They are, already bought em. 💯
head gasket
👍
I guess don't drive it until you get it checked by someone who knows what he's doing.
It's definitely not a good idea to grenade the engine just for going up and down the street a couple of times.
way too much smoke brother.. figure that. there shouldn't smoke like that on a EURO spec car. never. even my 24 years old japan shitbox never smoke.
