Honestly the lack of a romantic ending is the biggest appeal for me.
Edit: my biggest non dnd comment
Same, Especially as someone with a childhood best friend who’s a guy. I physically get sick when people imply we like each other, is it so hard to believe a girl and a boy can JUST BE FRIENDS. I’m also dating someone else now so finally people have kinda stopped.
@@monkeychief1904 it so annoying, there this one time I was thinking if I should stop being friends to him because our neighbors keeps shipping us and telling us to kiss each other on the cheeks.
@@zestytriss5282 wow that sucks. Nobody said anything that crazy about my friend and I, luckily. A lot of people thought we were siblings or dating, there was no in between, it was hella frustrating
@lets get *burbs* funky I would say more people are cancer then shipping itself.
Most ships and shippers just want to have fun and know most likely their ships won’t be canon. Every fandom has a ratio and the bad parts are the minority (but most toxic people reside on Twitter.) Usually it’s innocent and just fun and they hate it when people take it seriously.
You can’t say that a small minority of a fandom/shippers are toxic and then say it’s what the entire community is like or represents them the fandom as a whole. (I’m not saying you are like that and you were probably just joking, but I’m just saying.) However I will agree having the main characters having a platonic relationship is intriguing and much better. It’s a breath of fresh to not have the two male and female leads somehow start a relationship at the end no matter how little chemistry they have or how little time it took.
Okay I did not intend it to be that long and I apologize
While I certainly agree that there could have been more marketing done for this wonderful film, it DID sit at the #1 spot GLOBALLY for Netflix for a whole week. So ultimately a ton of people DID see it (fortunately)!! Thanks for the kind words everyone! -jimmy (voice of Din)

Hi man!
Great work on the voice.
Yes, I'm so happy that lots of people got to see it! I loved the movie and hope more people continue to discover it. You did a wonderful job with Din's voice!
Platonic male/female friendship??? Gotta watch this now

Platonic straight relationship , ok now that's legendary level rare in media !

I hate and loathe when the "Rich" say "money isn't everything".
Cause for most of us, it is everything.
No it isn't. It only serves to fund and grab your wants and desires. If you're that worried about money you're never going to find a balance in your life.
@@BrokensoulRider If your broke, money is the only thing you can AFFORD to care about. You have to constantly think about money if your struggling to survive, it not a choice and if your not that deep in the gutter you have to think about money when deciding most of your decisions in life. Having the choice to not think about money is a leisure, so it is hypocritical when rich people tell you that.
@@lyonsin2535 Considering that I, myself, had to go to churches that did food donations, I can safely and knowledgably still say you're flat out wrong. Just because you're poor does not mean money is the only thing that matters. What matters is a roof over your head, food, a place to sleep, something to wear. You do not need an expensive phone, you do not really need a car if you're inner city. You do not need a television or cable, or high speed internet. You do not need streaming subscriptions. You do not need gaming consoles, or a computer more than 300$.
These are all wants and desires. Living below your means, not above, will have a better impact on everything. Quite frankly, you don't even need to live on your own if you're single. You can live with your parents (unless they're unstable) and save that way. No one needs to be poor now a days. The reason the rich are rich is literally because they knew how to spend their money wisely and make it grow instead of sap it all up immediately.
So yes, they can say that.
@@BrokensoulRider You need money to get even basic needs like food, a house, clothes, medical assistance, etc. Also, how is high-speed internet a luxury when most well-paying jobs require it for anyone working at home? Or when the pandemic shut down schools and kids had to do schoolwork from home?
Also, maybe that whole condescending message about "wants and desires" should go towards rich people who will whine and cry about tax cuts because then they will afford to buy six yachts instead of seven.
@@BrokensoulRider I don't like bragging about being homeless with my family for 2 years with people on UA-cam comments but without that experience I think ANYBODY can tell you how wrong you are and no it doesn't involve a streaming service or a car. Because right in your own comment you, yes you said that you need to worry about the roof over your head, how? With money. Food water, clothes, electricity. Money money money. If your growing up and decide on a career you want to pursue, what is the first think you are thinking about? Can this career actually sustain you money wise and how much money is it gonna take to get there and can I afford it? Do you know why every broke parent wants to their kids to be doctors and engineers? So that they wouldn't have to worry about money like them because they would already have it. If you dare to have the ambition to be anything other then that like a musician your gonna get scolded, Why? Because it extremely hard to be a successful musician that can actually make a living for themselves financially. What if you wanted a kid? Can you guess what you have to worry about? Just having a baby born is extremely expensive and everything else that comes with it, you gonna have a handful. I pray to single mothers everyday. I don't know how you miss this but money is a thing you gotta worry about unfortunately, the people that don't ARE rich and don't have to base their life choices on whether they can afford it or not, they can be a musician and fail for years because they don't have to worry about money. And thank you for advice about how people don't have to be poor anymore, I'll be sure to tell all the homeless people I see down the street that they don't have to be homeless anymore 👍
I really like this movie. The more cliche elements to it move by fast enough so they don’t overstay their welcome, and the humor is well timed, and the animation is just a lot of fun. To a western audience it's probably an average movie. There will be a lot of aspects that a western audience might not fully understand and think is trite, but is actually not that bad. To me, this is the first time I felt like I could 100% relate to a character because it's built 100% on Chinese culture.
This movie is the most accurate rep I've ever seen in an animated movie. Before this movies set in China are set like the Tang dynasty or something. But this one was set in China in the 90s, and the entire opening sequence is highly relateable to anyone who spent time growing up in China in the 90s/early 2000s. The family is on the lower income side but even middle class folk could relate if they grew up in that period. Name one part of the movie and I can name a part of my life or a friend who went through it! Literally any part!
For once I felt really represented. I could tell a Chinese team worked on this.

When i 1st saw this trailer, a lot of people and maybe including me, think that this was just gonna be like aladdin, but to my surprise, when i watched it, it was so diffrent from aladdin, ESPECIALLY the genie
Ig most of you already know, but i just wanna mention it
Diffrence of the dragon and the genie from aladdin is
1. Wish dragon is somehow desperate and impatient, for it's master wish, unlike genie, he kinda has patience and befriends his master aladdin
2. Wish dragon is from a primitive time, so he does not now what are any of the things are in the future, while genie has gags that mentions the future like cars, game shows, and airplanes
3. Wish dragon has an origin, and he was once human before, genie never had an origin, other than the fact that he was in the lamp for like 3000 or 30,000 years..?
It was 10 000 years, just a reminder
Don’t forget that while the genie wants to be freed, long knows he will be freed at the end of it so no using third wish for him
@@sandywolfr26 yeah! Genie was freed in the end, but the wish dragon/long, chose to be a wish dragon again
It's interesting to note that the original tale of Aladdin, as told in 1001 Nights, took place in China.
I loved number 3. The fact that the wish dragon had an entire backstory and lore behind him just made it feel al the more real and tangible. It honestly made me wish that Aladdin had that too to some degree.

While the movie starts out showing their childhood friendship, I wouldn't call their relationship a platonic friendship in the second half of the movie. Din makes it clear when he's practicing talking to Li Na's billboard that he's romantically interested in her, he blatantly flirts with her (example: "When I saw your billboard, it was like getting you back again, but more beautiful and glamorous...doesn't hold a candle to the real thing, though." and Li Na giggles and flusters), and both Din and Li Na refer to their meet-ups as "dates." But it's great that the movie portrays a relationship built on friendship and moving towards romance, without a dramatic kiss at the end that fixes everything, or suddenly getting married, or whatever.
Arent dates just hangouts? That's why theres play dates or dates with dad or mom.
I really liked this movie and I'm a sucker for big intelligent friend creatures. I didn't mind the liar reveal because it seemed less of that and more "A reason for Din to see Lena again and develop it from there then to have her reintroduced to the old neighbourhood."
Yeah, Long giving Din advice in which he was a jerk was urgh but it might of been so Long could question what he believed was right and have it contrast with the later scene of him slowly realizing the value in family and just being with people and making a connection.
Yeah, the Pearl Tower date scene was def the low point of the movie. But luckily they get out of there and the reveal happens quickly, and Li Na takes it well. It was a lovely subversion of a trope I hate, quickly getting back into their friendship and the Point.
That’s literally the only scene in the entire movie I cringed at, I was screaming like *YOU’RE GONNA RUIN THAAAAT!*
“Lóng” literally just means dragon in Chinese 🙃
THAT'S WHY IT WAS CALLED AMERICAN DRAGON JAKE LONG
Jake is an american name, and Long is dragon in Chinese OH MY GOSH
Yep! 龙
I was so excited when I realized that halfway thru the movie!!
Long can mean many things, but in the movie, the ideogram is of dragon
I love this movie so much. It's nice to see a friendship between a guy and a girl that doesn't end with them kissing at the end, and all the characters were just so damn likable.

Wish dragon is way better than raya and the last dragon in my opinion. This year sony is doing a way better job, first Michelles vs the machines which was amazing and now this movie which isn't a masterpiece but still funny and good
ye
I STRONGLY disagree, there was way too much time dedicated to TRAFFIC and toilet jokes, and it had a LOT of chiche’s. This movie was a chore to get to for me
The biggest thing going for Wish Dragon is that it feels like a well-paced one off story... Meanwhile "Raya and the Last Dragon" pacing is all over the place and feels like multi season recap episode for a long running series was remade in a movie form... Like they decided to slam 5 story arcs (Prologue - "Downfall and Search for Dragon" - "Desert quest" - "Swamp Village" - "Mountain Tribe" - "Island Fortress") - spanning multiple episodes each into one recap movie and see if it works. Seriously "Raya and the Last Dragon" is essentially "I bet we can make our own "Avatar The Last Airbender" and condense it into a 2 hour movie!".
yeah especially in terms of the message both movies want to give, while Wish Dragon gives the usual "money won´t make you happy" message but it doesn´t come of as badly as it´s done in other movies/shows, meanwhile Raya and the last dragon´s message is "always forgive" but it does it in the worst way that I think has been shown, that Raya gets guilt tripped throughout the entire movie for not trusting in strangers despite the fact that it was a stranger that literally took away everything she had, and doomed the world, but Raya is portrayed as the bad guy for not forgiving someone that has shown that they cannot be trusted.
@@Alyssa-ii3vy Cliches aren't a bad thing, and the traffic and toilet jokes were few and far between, and never over-stayed their welcome. If we're gonna bash cliches, then Raya isn't much better.

While the "money isn't everything" lesson is fine and all, but knowing it comes from China is kinda making it take on a "don't worry about your financial situation and just stay in the socio-economic hierarchy place you were born in because your friends are there and you don't want to abandon them and also even if you even try your business will go under eventually and you'll end up back poor but it's okay because your friends will take you in in their one room apartment and you'll live happier than you did when you had money so just stay in your place! @@falconeshield Money doesn't buy happiness, but it's fucking hard to be happy without any money
LMAO imagine thinking this is the message the evil showwriter actually wanted to communicate to their audience. You are the new lord of overthinking it.
So:
A) the movie ends up with them starting a successfull restaurant. How does this fit with your "stick with your social class"? Because even in china, starting a restaurant makes you middle class.
B) In case you didnt notice, the movie is being extremely critical at the rich upper class. All the antagonist in this movie are rich people, and the biggest antagonist/ temptator, a.k.a the wish dragon was a former emperor obsessed with wealth.
C)I dont know if you were asleep during your history classes, but right now the confucean order is finished in china, and the communist party rule. And even though they are not really communist anymore, they are still putting kind of an emphasis on the importance of equality. Stop assuming china=confucianism, it's a whole country of 1 billion people, and you can't simply sum them up to chinese= over the top classism.
D)The message is "greed doesnt bring hapiness, and neither does social status". That's it. It's actually a fairly common message to hear if you dont live in the one country that has turned greed into a virtue, and turned the message of jesus from "the poor will be rewarded in heaven" to "get money, get fat, get bitches, destroy everything that stands in our way", a.k.a the USA
Fun fact about this film: this was actually based on a true LOVE story, despite the relationship in the film being platonic, the writer and director Chris Applehans made this movie for his Chinese friend who went through a similar ordeal, although without the happy ending. It's a beautiful story I think you guys should listen to.

Because i gotta be honest, in real life, it's very weird that if you stop talking to someone for reasons unknown, after almost 15 years of not even seeing each other at least once, the same friendship would just, "click"

Long tells us about this past as a king, how his quest to expand the kingdom and build wealth ruined his family and left him alone. He literally dies with no one by his side, serves 9 masters and still didn't understand where he went wrong. But when he has the chance to be free he chooses servitude because he knew Din was going to make his mistake and refuses to grant his last wish until he made the wish for the right reason.

I loved that too. I think it made me cry
The only thing I didn't like was the whole secret identity part. I already was thinking about how some aspects of Wish Dragon were like a certain French show I.e
1. Two friends separated by wealth gap
2. Rich father has no time for child
3. Father without time for child secretly the villain
But I mainly overlooked it because they weren't hurting the story. However, the trope I hate the most in the show was the whole "I have a secret identity that means I can't tell anyone, and this will certainly affect my relationships" schtick.
I really don't like when characters break up because of this misunderstanding, so seeing Li Na get upset about "Dan" being a jerk because he's pretending to be rich, especially after she didn't care to talk to "Dan" because she was told to just sit and look pretty, really annoyed me

I was smiling the whole time through the two's childhood, having someone to hangout with, helping you overcome your fears/anxieties, and of course, had fun together. Finally I have one movie that can be referred to when I say "girls can be bros too" ;3
As a side note: I was holding the bottom of me jaw the whole time when the two were together on screen, fearin' the creator might take it to the route of "I never knew you were so beautiful/all this years, I actually love you" crap. The ambiguous ending didn't help, but I'd like to think the creator left that for the audience to interpret it.
The thing I didnt like is the message, "money doesnt matter" is both overdone and objectively wrong, if money was Dins first wish the movie would have ended sooner, cuz it would solve everything except legs (but long would have completed his punishment so legs would not be able to do anything)
Plus at the end, they are wealthy, not as much as Li Na was at the begining, but they open a nice restaurant that helps both families, with money
I don't think "money doesn't matter" is the message of the story. I think it's "money isn't forever", as in money can help families like Din's but at the end of the day u can't bring money to your grave and money can't buy everything like a caring community or a father's love

I had to watch this with my cousins, when the kids ate the chicken, they were all like "Noooo!". I died laughing XD
I felt so nostalgic because I used to live in china
Considering what happens at the end; Din didn’t actually need Long’s wish magic to end up with Li Na.
Yeah, but only because Lina treated him as sloppy seconds basically.

I saw like 1 trailer ad for this film on youtube and I seriously thought the dragon was gonna be annoying. The only thing I remember from the trailer is the dragon eating snacks and having a weird smile and thats it. Now that Ive watched the video, now I wanna watch it. Thanks.
I knew about it back when Disney announced they had a dragon movie as in some one, I think Celspex, don't quote me, said "Shore are a lot of dragon movies'" after that I knew only from animation youtubers that out was coming out but I did not know it was on Netflix till after I saw it while looking for other things. What every one will not shut up about is the ATLA reboot and the live action Powerpuff girls. this did do better in adds then Eden.
I really liked that film, the platonic friendship thing really surprised me, as you said it's hard to see something like this on films.
The part I loved the most was that when she comes to his house, spend some time together and then tells him that they can't stay friends because of status... and I was like "WHAAAAAAT? They'll really say that money matters?"
Glad they explored this problem from a "real" perspective, that's how this world works.
It's interesting to see what Jackie Chan is up to these days. The movie seems like a wholesome adventure, and makes me think that Tencent's film division seems stronger when they produce an original story opposed to making sequels to established franchises.
This is definitely a fantasy movie. No one would ever want me platonically.
I just finished watching it. Loved it. Cryed when I thought long died as well as the dad since mine own father was in the hospital for father's day 😕 I thought long's character design was adorable too
I hope your father is okay! I also cried when long and the dad moment happened and I agree that long design is adorable and appealing to adults and kids
Spoilers:
When Long turns into gold and sinks to the bottom of the ocean my brain immediately went “Breaking News! Solid gold T-posing dragon statue discovered in the ocean!”
That was curse lol
My siblings and i just started t-posing in that scene to pay respects

I also did not know this movie was a thing.
I do have a question though, are you planning to do a sarcastic summary of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous? First three seasons are on Netflix, and we will be getting season 4. It's a good show, even though it does have its issues (like every show).
Sadly this movie was ignored, it was pleasantly charming though I saw no marketing for this and only knew about cause I keep up to date on animated movie release dates.
I find this movie by accident and then told my nieces about it. They love it, especially the small one who likes dragons so much. I don't understand why this kind of gems don't receive the promo other less entertaining movies and series have.
The Aladdin similarities do undercut it but it's such a cute and fun movie anyways.
uh. the furries claimed him as buff af in sfw and uh... you get the rest
Oh. Oh no.
Whoops
But are they wrong?/hj
I mean, we should've expected that.
- Cute
- Cynical in a funny way
- Daddy
- Literally flexes once
yeah it checks out
I didn't even know this movie existed until now-
It was actually pretty good. Solid 6.5/10. Would watch it again, even though it’s not perfect
My favorite moment was probably When Wong is in the afterlife and literally argues with a God to be let back down to grant the last wish.
Finally. In almost every movie I watch there's a romantic relationship. It's good to see that platonic friendship is still appreciated.
I loved this movie 10/10 rccomended THEY SHOULD HAVE PROMOTED IT
Before meeting her he did have meetings with the advertisement of her in a flirtatious way so I wouldn't say it wasnt that he didn't feel something for her. It has the feel of a love story because it makes people want him to get his chance to meet her etc.and he does but they took a realistic approach to her reaction to meeting him after so many years. And the backgrounds are pretty accurate for the the place they took inspiration from.
The best moment is when the short guy gets long legs
I feel like having multiple themes is okay to have in a film. A lot of good stories aren’t just focused on one singular struggle and theme. It doesn’t necessarily make it clunky unless it confuses the watcher. Life isn’t simple with one or two problems and stories like this express that while also maintaining the story as a whole that’s still easy to follow.
I watched this film last week and it holy hell do I agree that this film is getting no love. AND IT FUCKING SHOULD.
Seeing the main guy and girl not kiss or do anything romantic, but just friend stuff blew my mind. MORE. WE NEED MORE OF THIS.
I saw this and it was honestly just entertainment to me! I love how they made a platonic relationship with the main character and his friend!
One thing I was bothered is how Lóng is portrayed. I’m half Chinese and know that this is the exact OPPOSITE of how a traditional Chinese dragon would act. They also don’t look like cotton candy-
Traditional Chinese dragons are supposed to portray wealth, respect, reputation and manipulation! We are the one who should be bowing before them! Though a wish dragon is a very fun thing to think of, it’s horrendously misleading. Don’t get me wrong, I loved this movie! But I just want people to know about the real Chinese dragons and not be misinformed!
I was surprised by how much I loved this movie! I really want to give Din a hug for being so damn endearing. I recommend everyone give it a watch. It was really sweet and had great ending.
Watched this a few days after it came out and enjoyed it. Fun watch over all for both the movie and this review. Stellar as always
I love the liar reveal in this movie. The scene in the restaurant where Din's acting like a jackass because Long told him to and seconds later apologizes is my favourite comedic scene in this movie
I had seen this on the Netflix Catalogue a few days ago and was just like meh just another random CGI movie, but seeing you review it made me go immediately watch it. I trust your judgement so thanks again Sarcastic for putting me on the path to watch another great animation :)
My mum put this movie on the other day and I had below expectations. I thought it would be something like Boss baby or something.
It was a great movie. Platonic friendship relationship? The comedy was delightful and my whole family exploded in laughter at least 2 times, and I liked the characters.
Should've been recommended a lot more.
The dragon's name is Dragon, and that hurts me.
龙
Draco indicated it eloquently in DragonHeart, regarding calling a dragon's name in another tongue. ;-)
well i mean they kinda did the same thing with the kung fu panda characters. the entire furious five was just named after whatever animal they were
"I'm going to fold you with my feet because you're not ready for these hands...". XD
I found this movie after my parents put it on for my younger sister. I was shocked that I hadn’t seen any talk about it, so immediately assumed it would be a pretty low budget shitty attempt at cultural representation by Netflix that they couldn’t be bothered to even promote. Boy was I surprised. This movie was really refreshing after all the shitty movies Disney has been producing recently. The comedy slaps, the characters don’t fall into too many overdone lazy tropes, the animation is really nice, and the plot managed to steer clear of being too predictable (a lot of this is due to the plot itself being kinda messy, but still). It had some nice messages and I overall enjoyed it so much more than I expected. Such a shame that a movie that’s genuinely good wont get the attention it deserves.
I remember seeing an ad about this where they called the main character a himbo and I was so mad about it I went into a fit of rage
I love this movie's 'lier revealed' plot in that, sure, it's there, but it's relatively painless. There's no feeling of betrail from other characters that leads to moping and the movie's low point. If anything it leads to a little moment of joy and companionship, because the person being lied to listens and understands why. GOD I wish more characters in movies would just talk things out!
Maybe its just me but I actually thought the simple backgrounds were a creative choice!! It looks like they tried replicating a "gouache painting" kinda look, and imo I think they nailed it!
On Netflix, it said that his movie was part of the Representation Matters Collection. or something along those lines. Really cool of you to say that Netflix. Maybe next time you can actually promote these movies.
Never felt so hyped from a concept art
I really never thought it would live up to it but OOH BOY IT PAST IT
I was in LOVE with this movie
Btw the intro one was amazing and adorable
I haven't watched it yet, but I heard my little ones having a blast with this one. Like endless laughter that led to tears. Might check it out.
I think "Wish Dragon" was the better title, "The Wish Dragon" would mean Long is the only one, we know that isn't the case, there are plenty of people that are like him or worse and they would be sent as a Wish Dragon
Mulan 3: mushos revenge
Didnt they actually make a Mulan 3?
@wanka wanka No, but i just checked and i was wrong.
I knew this was coming out, but only because my recommendations are a mix of Asian dramas and kids media, despite living in the US. I saw in in the ‘coming soon’ section about a week before it came out. But I only saw the end while my sister was watching it. It’s was so cute! Loved the way they ended it!
I enjoyed it, a lot! And the ending was a nice change!
I think it should be called Wish Dragon because Long stated that “Every wish dragon must serve 10 wishes...” he said every which must mean there are more. So, in my opinion, it doesn’t really deserve to be named THE Wish Dragon because there are more. He’s just A wish dragon.
I've already seen this movie, but I'm so glad someone has finally noticed it! I never heard of it before until I was just scrolling through netflix and tried it out.
3:29 that perfectly voices Long
I wanted to thank you for making me discover this film, my family really enjoyed it. ^^
See, Din already would have had a sort of character arc, if they'd gone there, for at least some time and that's his irresponsibility and dreamer attitude. If he were really confronted with the reality that not everything would work out and that he really needed to take responsibility - like actually attending classes - maybe he could have developed more. Because he makes various promises and kind of lies/keeps secrets about what he's doing. If he learned along the way to just straight up be honest with his mother, or attend class, then maybe he'd have more of an arc.
I also actually kind of liked the skinny leg-hand guy. Dunno why, I just thought he was cool. That said, once it was revealed he wasn't the big bad (initially), I got used to him not being that and then when he took over the role of the big bad it just didn't fit with him anymore.
I liked it more than Machines. Plus John Cho as Long was spectacular.
I actually remember seeing trailers for this movie when it was first announced. Then it was all radio silence. I didn't know this movie even came out until this review dropped. Thanks for letting us all know! I've been curious to watch this since the trailers.
Had so much fun watching this film, loved it. Thank you to this video, it reminded me to see it.
Dude I totally agree that Long was the best part of this movie!! I just love like everything about him, he leaves such an impact and is so fun to watch no matter what scene he’s in 😁
I wish (lol) that he gained something from the adventure, like a decent income from the rich wish, otherwise aside from his childhood friend drifting off again he stayed the same
Finally a heckin Male and female platonic friendship.
I'm so happy that there is a non-romantic subplot
I remember finding it by chance when I was looking for something to watch and omg it was great. Like you said, it's not the best animated movie out there but it's very entertaining and you're on for a good time. I think it's underrated and deserves more recognition because that "Wish-granting character" trope has become overused through the years but somehow this movie makes it work in a refreshing way.
I watched this with absolutely no expectations and I was pleasantly surprised at the cute friendships, original take on an old story and fun characters
AND GOOD CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
This movies needs a sequel 💯
I mean the movie was pretty good but what else could be done? It's already perfect
I didn't even know this was out lol
Thank you for this vid, will watch this film!
leaving this video just before the spoilers, you've convinced me to watch it lol
