In 1977, local radio was dribbling out Aerosmith and ZZ Topp and Kansas etc. Then these guys come along, and people were like...The Hell is this? They were confused. I was confused. Didn't know what to make of The Talking Heads. But they persisted. By the second or third album, I was on board. I realized they were waaaaay ahead of what was going on musically. David Byrne is a very avant-garde type of artist some people like him some people don't I think he's a genius quite an interesting person he is if you ever get a chance check out some of his interviews
In Paul Zollo’s book , it is said that “Psycho Killer” was the first song Frantz, Weymouth, and Byrne composed together and that it was written “entirely as a joke." To this day Byrne wonders why people love it.” (p. 495) But they do! Apparently, Byrne, had been listening to Alice Cooper and wanted to write his own "really rude" song, so this is that song. As a big fan of Alice Cooper way back in 1971 for a little while, I understand why he did want to write such a song. Dark side music certainly has its own appeal.
You might want to react to “Life During Wartime” by The Talking Heads. Most folks have heard part of that tune... they just don’t know the name of the tune or who performs it. The Talking Heads are well known for NOT performing “typical” or “normal” music.... they still have some great tunes nonetheless.

One of my favorite memories ever was in 1978...at a beach restaurant on the island of Mykonos, Greece, listening to this song while watching an English punk rocker dancing around the floor, moving in ways I'd never seen before. Was working at record store when this album was released. It changed us all.
Talking Heads started at the Rhode Island School of Design and got noticed at CBGB'S in the early days of the punk movement - but they were never punk. They're more of an art-school project. Which isn't as crazy as it sounds; John Lennon started his band which finally became the Beatles while in art school, and many other British bands were started by art school students.
Such an important point. I tried to convince the 17 yr old reactor he HAS to do the original Talking Head's videos or live versions of this band. You don't want to see only half of the paintings, by hearing studio versions.
"The groove is like someone dancing around with a knife!" LOLOL...ohhh, Tina Weymouth (the bass player) would LOVE to hear that. If you want to do a great musical deep dive into the period where Talking Heads came from, then look into the 1970s NYC punk scene where they were born. This scene also produced the Ramones, Blondie, the New York Dolls, the Heartbreakers, Patti Smith, Television and so much more.

Have you heard Talking Heads "Burning Down The House" or "Take Me To The River," I think Those two are there best! But, they are different, and what kind of drugs were they on!
The lead singer David Byrne was born and brought up in the west coast of Scotland (Helensburgh) and his family emigrated to the States when he was in his teens. Talking Heads were a huge part of my youth to me they took the essence of the Velvet Underground and ran with it. Very influential but also underrated.

The name Talking Heads came from an issue of TV Guide, which "explained the term used by TV studios to describe a head-and-shoulder shot of a person talking as 'all content, no action'.
Something I didn't know till last year, was the opening staccato bass stabs of Tina's , was her idea of imitating the "shower scene" in Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho". Clever girl, that Tina.
This version of "Psycho Killer" sounds like an outtake or an alternate take of the song. The line "I passed out hours ago, I'm sadder than you'll ever know" got cut from the final version that made it onto the album Talking Heads '77.
I like this version a lot - is there a "right" version? Maybe the hit version - but it doesn't mean that's the only version of a song. Talking Heads is/was a term used to denote newscasters on TV - just a talking head on the screen.
Yes, there is a "right" version, if you mean the version that actually existed when this song was a hit. This is NOT that. This is a demo that was released years later as a bonus track on some CD. The original version is far better.
I would suggest "My Girlfriend is Better" from their concert movie Stop Making Sense. A live performance with layer upon layer of instruments, David Byrne in his big suit, and an unbelievable synthetic base by Tina Weymouth.
I have a great memory of my own band playing a gig at CBGB'S IN 1995. We finished our set loaded out and proceeded to the insane FDR (east side highway). It felt like every car was driving on a race track. As we were listening to WNEW, who was playing this tune. We cranked it up white-knuckles on the wheel the whole way outta dodge. Every time I hear it. I think if that "Psycho Killer" drive. Of which I refer to the FDR.. ever since- " PSYCHO KILLER DRIVE"
"Psycho Killer" charted because of the false assumption that the song was about the Son of Sam murders, although it was written two years before the murders happened.

Woot! I'm so glad you finally made it to Talking Heads. They're just so much weird fun.
Of which I refer to the FDR.. ever since-
" PSYCHO KILLER DRIVE"
Try Life During Wartime and Heaven by Talking Heads. Both great songs.
"Psycho Killer" charted because of the false assumption that the song was about the Son of Sam murders, although it was written two years before the murders happened.
Didn't know that tid bit....thanks 😁
I thought for a while that “Blockbuster” from Sweet was about the Son of Sam as well, but that song predates those murders as well.
Talking Heads are quite the visual group. You should experience it.
Thank you, Jamel, for getting into Talking Heads. One of my fav bands from my adolescence.
