As a historian I enjoy when media actually looks a historical pieces with a proper mindset of respecting the source material. Take Histories Civil War for instance while not a great core game they at least respected the source material and didn't create a narrative to fit their agenda. Side note: Do the outlets that won't cover this game realize that they are giving this game more publicity than it would have received if they just reviewed it and moved on. Oh well off to explore the 1400's.
I have to watch something since your departure from kind of funny I slowly stop watching them not out of anger or spite or anything it's just it lost something it's just one big Echo chamber Nick still cool but he couldn't save my subscription
Thank you Colin for explaining this, I was confused about the game, kept reading Comments in Social Media that the game is Racist and kept thinking WTF are they taking about, I don't see no racism in the game on UA-cam. Have not bought the game because I'm waiting for God of War.
It's complete oppression. If you can't express yourself. SJW are low key slavers. They will be dealt with in the future and that is a fact. Logic dictates it. Question is; will morals prevent logic from triumphing?
How about we just let people create the stories they want to create, okay? Ask yourself this: Does including or not including a certain race or culture in an entertainment medium keep you up at night? If the answer is yes, then you have way bigger problems at hand than a simple video game.
Or a game for people who settle. It's pretty half-assed in many aspects. The story is great and the graphics are great (when they don't look like PS2 graphics because they won't load in properly) and the acting is good. The aiming when using a bow is retarded, the "realistic" combat is tedious and the game breaking freezes and glitches aren't very nice either. I'd say this game is your average medieval open-world RPG with a bit more emphasis on story than most.
Critical Role Highlights I get that it's not as good as it's being billed as, but it's far better than an "average medieval sandbox." I think the biggest problem it has is balancing; the difficulty scale goes from nigh impossible when you start to invicible demi god in the mid game. They need to tweak the countering, because as it stands, there's no reason ever swing if you can counter so powerfully.
Games journalism is a joke, in fact it was GamerGate that made me understand how far so called journalists would go to completely change a story to something that is wildly inaccurate just to fit their narrative - people still think gamergate was a “Sexist hate group” because of the games press, and the same press tried (and failed) to make this developer racist. No wonder people are going to their favorite forums or gamers on UA-cam to get their gaming news now
Yeah, it's unfortunate that the movement kinda got hijacked by e-celebs later on, but it is what it is -- had to end eventually. It was extremely eye opening to see literally over a dozen websites post the exact same "Gamers are dead" article on the same day, though. Like, you couldn't have just staggered it over a week, maybe even two weeks? No, let's just all do it on the same day, that's not suspicious at all. Fortunately, all you have to do is raise awareness for corrupt press corps to lose a lot of their power and the movement certainly accomplished that.
A site like Waypoint explicitly saying "We're not gonna cover this" is the best advertisement for the game ever. If they really wanted to ruin him, they'd just say nothing.
Did you listen to the Waypoint podcast because I keep seeing people mention it when they clearly havent listened to it :I They were talking about why they werent covering it and a fair bit about how to deal with situations like this where something might be controversial. Its an interesting listen in regards to the latter - A lot of angles to the subject so its a great peek behind the curtain.
Waypoint made the point of saying they're not going to cover it and then proceed to dedicate a poscast as to why that is. Either cover it or don't. Hypocrites.
Gordon Freemason exactly. Reminds me of when Huffpost posted an article about how they were going to cover the trump presidential campaign in the entertainment section instead of politics. If ever you wanted to draw attention to the fact that he really was running for president and was serious about it, that was the way to do it lol
As someone who firmly believes in voting with your wallet, I will certainly buy this game. Not because I agree with everything it represents (I don’t, in fact) but because I want game-makers to know that they can create something that they believe in, and won’t be punished if it’s different than what everyone else thinks.
I don't have much interest in this game as a game... but I almost want to buy the game on the principle to support a studio sticking to their guns to the witch hunters damning them.
Oh man this was so refreshing. I'm so fed up with outrage culture and social justice warriors. Will never understand the joy righteous people take out of making another person feel so small and insignificant just for thinking differently. I know Colin's personal experience on this topic was hard for him, but we're so glad you're back, man. It takes courage to not back down and keep doing videos like these after all you went through (and probably still do)
It’s sad that game developers can’t make stories they want to tell. So what if the cast is all white or all black or whatever. It’s to content of the story that matters. The “EVERYTHING must be diverse!!!” mentality is only a leftist ideology. It’s like how mafia 3 got so much heat over the racism in the game . The game had to have that racism to be historically accurate in their view. There’s too much washing of our history. Peeps gotta remember, if u try to erase history, your bound to repeat it.
Resident Evil 5: racist for having black people in Africa. Kingdom Come: racist for not having black people in medieval Europe. We the People: can't win.
Sure, point being the game was taking place in a fictitious country in a region of Africa with the vast majority of the population being black. The imagery of a white man killing black people didn't have the same effect on the Japanese developers as it does to Americans and Europeans and they were just being realistic in their depiction of the area.
Yeah I remember being kinda shocked reading the articles about the insensitivity of the game developers and trying to wrap my head around the silliness of it all. If only we knew just how vapid and regressive things would become...
This issue was also a huge topic in German games media. However, I feel like most of them had a far better approach to it than those folks you describe seemingly had. At first, most media ignored the comments and the potential issue altogether (they were not aware of it). They got criticised for it, but even (most of) the critics only wanted a discussion about it. Their approach wasn't to press an ideology onto people but to inform them, so everyone could come to their own conclusions and make their own decisions. This led to some great articles and videos on the topic and some very profound debates that were almost entirely friendly, open and levelheaded. They reached out to Daniel Vávra for statements and clarification and represented his point of views very fairly. The show "Game Two" had an excellent segment on it, were all sorts of different viewpoints got represented. They even spoke to a historian, an expert of the area and time the game tries to represent and asked him about this issues. Thats what (videogame) journalism should be.
As a black guy who is left leaning, I'm fine the game and glad it's doing well. Only thing I don't like about kingdom come deliverance is lack of magic system, I'm a battle mage through and through. I always go in with a melee and a bolt of magic. But hey guess I just gotta make my own game ;). Hope you're doing well today Colin and whoever else read this.
Eh, there's always alchemy. Making some potions or poison. Its..a type of magic? :P I got it and it's so much fun but damn it took me a while to find a bed to sleep in. Dx Just the first part of getting out of the castle was a pain with the lockpicking mechanic.
I'm a fairly progressive guy and believe in increasing the diversity in video games, but shoehorning diversity into games where it doesn't make sense is just stupid, this game is set in medieval Europe, I'd rather a historically accurate game, forcing diversity into a game just belittles actual racism in media
It DOES increase diversity though. Almost no games are made about the Czech Rep. That IS diversity. It's just the term has been hijacked to push an explicitly racial movement.
Gordon Freemason that is true, there seems to be a perception that white people can't be an underepresented minority, as an Irish man I completely understand this.
You can also say that there will be no homosexual main character in a Triple A game in a long time. Not because the makers are homophobe, its just the simple reason that it would not sell.
Well it's mostly about grouping people purely intro racial groups. Which is utter nonsense. A white person in Russia is nothing like a white person in Ireland. A black person in Nigeria is nothing like a black person in Detroit.
Its a win-win. They got their clicks, we got to laugh @ get arguments about extreme SJWs. Looking forward to more mutually benefitial exchanges with them :)
It's a nice video but you fall prey to the fallacy of the Golden Middle in many of your arguments. As for his "Bohemia was white in those days' claims, his claims stand up. First, Bohemia, to this day, is at least 99.6% white I can't say 100% because there are about 500 Vietnamese living there. The rest of the 0.4% may be an ethnic minority not officially recognized in the survey, like French or Swiss. The minorities in Bohemia are Russians (white), Poles (white), Ukrainians (white), Roma (Gypsies; white), Romanians (white), Hungarians (white_, Slovaks (white) and Jews (Ashkenazi; white). Second, Bohemia was NOT on any significant trade routes. Back in those days travel was very dangerous. Most people didn't leave the safety of their local village. So you're just not going to get any real casual travel. Rather, only Merchant-Traders, Soldiers and the Rich travelled. There is no reason to believe that any particular time there was more than just the tiniest non-white presence in Bohemia. Nobody with any real understanding of Medieval life would expect any sort of non-white presences beyond the rarest of casual pass-throughs. There was, simply put, no reason for them to come there. Which is why Bohemia, to this day is at least 99.6% white. And possibly whiter. Unlike France, Spain, Italy, Greece and other countries that were on trade routes and had far more racial visitation and mixing.
E1V1A E1V1A - you could be talking about 'scrolls/fallout game made by Bethesda. The one thing I'm surprised by with this game so far is how the map is crafted, I have yet to see anything out of place, like a tree floating or miss-aligned ground textures. In a game like the elder scrolls I could not go 5 mins without noticing it. This game has the potential to be much more polished than that, a few of the mechanics and scripting errors is nothing compared to a game where the developer cant be arsed and copies and pastes huge parts of the map, you can tell they took some level of care with what the had to work with.
I personally never understood calling a game like this racist. I could get it if they were purposefully excluding a race that was common just because they don't like them, but that's not what's going on here. There will probably be a Black Panther video game considering how good the movie was. And if there are little to 0 white people in it that won't be racist either, because it fits the setting. And I'll still likely enjoy it. People need to stop throwing these words like racist and Nazi around so much, conflating them with such innocuous things. It dilutes the meaning of the word and does more to continue to divide us all and stoke resentment in one another.
How Twitter and the gaming press have ruined and continue to ruin this industry is just mind blowing to me. Disgusting. These people don't get that by bullying and cornering people like the head of Warhorse Studios, they are the ones who look like bigots. I just get my gaming news from Gematsu these days, no bullshit headlines or hot takes from the editor, gets straight to delivering the news. I suggest you do too. As always, thank you for the video Colin.
Here is one thing people don't seem to understand. No matter how articulate you are in explaining ideas or what ever it might be, it won't matter. People who want to take what you say out of context will do so no matter how articulate and meticulous you are.
Why do we let people like the gaming press represent gaming you ask? Well theres a movement who is activley trying to stop just that. It formed in 2014, and is called GamerGate. That was the point from the very beginning, and still is. KC:D shows that its working.
Thank fuck for this video. Honestly, I read the Eurogamer review for this game and I couldn't believe my eyes. I and many others respectfully called out the needless, far left, political agenda in the second half of the review as BS. Kingdom Come: Deliverance deserves praise for trying something different, ambitious and delivering on that promise, even if there are a few cracks in the walls, not shit on because the Creative Head doesn't share the far left political viewpoint of the majority of the games industry. I'll be purchasing as soon as more of those cracks have been plastered over. The level headed, usually silent majority also need people like you to stand up to the far left, because it always seems like it's their way or the highway. Great stuff Colin, this video made my day!
I've been trying to find someone with a sensible position on this whole "scandal", and yours is the only one I've found so far. Hopefully you will keep making videos like this for whenever an industry-wide case of cognitive dissonance occurs, because I believe you are filling a very important void. I think this is the most important episode of Side Quest so far. Cheers.
Probably my favorite video of Side Quest so far. It's great to see you tackle this kind of subject and provide a much needed counter argument to all the ridiculousness found in most of games media. This is why your voice is so important, Colin. I'm glad you're back talking about games now more than ever.
I’m brown and this doesn’t bother me one bit. It’s very authentic for the time as it set out to be. There really weren’t many African or Arab people in that area in 1403 (which I believe is when this game is set in, may be wrong) Maybe it’s just me but I don’t need a horde of white people telling me I need to be represented in something like this.
Fun fact North Africans and Arabs are actually Caucasian, just darker skin complexion(People confuse ethnicity and race too much Caucasians are actually quite diverse in appearance) :) they have a lot in common with the people of Southern Europe and Iberia, I'm Greek and I have an olive skin complexion and I tan really well I could probably pass for Italian or Spanish, And to the Twitter screen shot in the video The Moors were North African not black, SJW's love to bring them up in these discussions, and while we're at it the "Latino/Hispanic is a race" myth that's another stupid one there are almost Latino's of every race lmao the label literally only refers to your cultural and linguistic heritage Source- My grandmother was an anthropologist
We’ve had our differences of opinion on certain games and topics, but man, if I don’t respect you for being a level headed voice of reason on this topic. Thanks, Colin. Quite enjoyed the video. It’s good to see level headed talk in an industry that has become so very much up its own ass. So kudos Colin, and thanks again for being a level headed voice of reason!
Warhorse has a full time historian on the staff, but surely your average social justice gamer, or games journalist, knows 15th century Bohemia better than she does. I'm personally fed up with everything being so god damn complicated. Like Resident Evil 5 showed us; Africa has Africans in it, Europe has Europeans in it. Deal. With. It.
Its not reality. There were Africans in Medieval Europe. Because you did not hear about them in fantasy tales does not make it fact. www.publicmedievalist.com/race-racism-middle-ages-tearing-whites-medieval-world/
mystieus Huh... Welp, look at that. Though, I do find it reasonable that the developer said that people of color were very rare during midieval Bohemia. But to say, it's "reality" and "accurate" that there were none is fucking stupid.
Didn't take much to get some triggered. PC is rarely (if ever) based on reality or logic. It would be naive to think there were no blacks in the area at the time. I don't need a link to an article to know this. My statement was against those who push PC at every opportunity.
CountryGentlman I'm triggered, yet I basically agreed with you? How does that work? Lmfao The word "triggered," like "racist," "fascist," "authoritarian," "homophobe," etc, has lost it's damn meaning these days it would appear.
Thank you Colin for defending the artistic rights of Warhorse. These overblown stories by the media are becoming frighteningly more common and we need more people like you calling out the bullshit.
I think it’s not been affected by the manufactured controversy because at this point people are just done with politics. Politics is in everything now you can’t scratch your ass without politics seeping in and videogames are an escape from that. I think Bay Area media types will probably not buy the game but let’s be real most of them don’t need to. The general public however just want to play the damn game.
Chinese and Japanese look pale af so yeah they'd be considered white to SJW freaks. Fortunately idgaf about SJW's and I'm brown so I just adopt leftist tactics and call them racist, prejudice lying scumbags. It gets them shook every time. You might say that's horrible, don't care, my patience is 0 this year. Freedom or slavery. Simple choice to make tbh.
I echo the sentiment stated early 8n this piece and have said it often. IF YOU DONT LIKE SOMEONES ART CREATE YOUR OWN. Nobody has the right to infringe on YOUR artistic vision. If you don't like it, too damn bad.
Great episode as always, Colin! I love how you bring level-headed discussion to topics that aren't getting it elsewhere. Also as a tip: when you show screen grabs of an article and are quoting them maybe considering highlighting what your quoting? I often found myself scrambling to find the quotes in the article you're showing but almost never finding it in time before you cut away. Just a small thing that could make videos like this even better in the future!
This sums up so many of my problems, not just with gaming media, but media as a whole. I struggle to go to pretty much any gaming website these days. Well said, Colin. Well said.
I'm frankly shocked and utterly devastated that, as a European, I see these things happening to the game industry and apparently, primarely in the US. A country I used to admire for its technological progression and inventiveness when it came to the industry. When growing up (started as a young kid with a Nintendo NES, now as a 30 something on a gaming PC and PS4 Pro), these things never came up, and I didn't grow up to be a racist or sexist, but someone who was raised and educated to be respectful and open minded. I am happy that, as someone who always considered Colin to be the most level-headed of the IGN crew (and later Kinda Funny), he dedicates his time to expose these journalists who seek to sensationalize and go after anybody who even has a remotely different idea than the PC society of today dictates, and I commend the Czech company for making this game and not giving in to this rediculous outside pressure. Keep it up Colin!
Daniel Vavra is one of the bravest people in the industry. Probably on the level with Yoko Taro. He risks reputation, money, his future for many years, for the sake of his creative intent. With great respect from Russia.
Colin, you should definitely check this game out. As of August 2019, bugs and glitches have been ironed out. As a history buff, I'm sure you'll enjoy it and it's sad this game didn't even get a nod for GOTY discussions in 2018.
I love to see a developer stick up for his view and his vision of what he wants to create. Fuck the opinions of people that aren't going to buy the game anyway. Let the industry and the dollars it makes be the ultimate decider of whether or not his decision was correct monetarily. Screw your moralistic authoritarianism. HooRah to this developer for not backing down.
Nothing in history has aged as poorly as that comment about Assassin's Creed games being historically accurate. Probably accurate at the time, but just seven months later Assassin's Creed Odyssey would come out and name several random npcs "Light Hoplite"
I havent started it up yet but was happy to pay WarHorse full price on release day for a Steam copy. Im glad they stuck to their vision and didnt bend the knee to the always outraged hate mobs.
Another great video, Colin! I really appreciate you being such an advocate for people learning how to talk to each other, even in disagreement, more graciously and productively. Keep doing what you're doing! -Paeter Frandsen
This brings to mind what Jerry Seinfeld said about not performing in colleges because of PC. People like to throw these words around, "this is racist", "that is sexist", whitout knowing the full weight of those words, and some others. And the problem is that as soon as someone says that, the conversation stops and it becomes a witch hunt, and someone needs to burn at the stake.
I'm left wing: a socialist to be exact. Over 30 years ago, before most of these Social Justice Warriors were even born, I campaigned for sexual and racial equality and still hold those views today. SJWs are NOT left wing, or even liberal, they are self promoting and immature individuals who pick fights because it's what they get a kick out of. They are the very opposite of progressive. SJWs would rather rewrite history, burn books and destroy great architecture and statues than suffer the mixed bag which is every country's tradition and heritage. Far from being leftist or liberal, they have more in common with the far right, and the overly keen jobsworths who grease the wheels of totalitarian states. They are obsessive, deceptive and have not even a rudimentary knowledge of historical struggle and change. They are a plague on our Age.
The funny thing is that the people calling for a boycott wouldn't have bought the game anyway. It's a call to arms when all your swords are made or rubber and your knees are shaking like gelatine cubes.
I found myself nodding in agreement throughout the entirety of this video. Well said Colin. There's real racism, and then there's this "situation". This isn't anywhere close. But it's such an easy hot button to press that people seem to pound it in without giving a second thought. Your rationale and level head are welcome breaths of fresh air. Keep on keepin on!
As a history major , comming from Europe, may I just say: black people in medieval Europe were extremely rare, and almost exclusively a attraction, a rarity to marvel at. Kings and aristocracy (0,01% of the population) SOMETIMES had 1 in their entourage to show off.THAT's the reason why they are sometimes shown on medieval art. They didn't mingle and have ordinary lives in the country side, in fact, they lived a very comfortable life in the entourage of extremely wealthy people. In the Czech republic, at that time, we are talking about literally 3 or 4 of black people. In all of Czechoslovakia. This discussion is ridiculous.
eloquent and excellently said. Always pumped when an artist gets to create their art that they set out to give the world without it being watered down to the acceptable content offerings of the torch-and-pitchfork troll-culture of today. Truly, dumb things may have been said and some of his ideologies might be skewed far too far one way or the other, but his game telling the story he set out to tell, and selling so well in the face of non-existent controversy, is inspirational to other artists just looking to share their ideas.
I never played the game. Seeing the screen caps and gameplay though may have convinced me to get this title. I'm treating this as nothing more than entertainment. Anything past that loses the fun of the game.
Yeah I've seen a few, but they're the kind that a lot of big open RPGs have. I haven't come across anything game breaking yet, but as you said unfortunately it's different for a lot of people, and there are many that have an unplayable game.
It is a very fun game once you get on a bit in the main quest and get used to the world and the controls. They have also released the second patch, so hopefully a lot of bugs will be fixed for you if you decide to buy.
The games media is so overwhelmingly filled with leftist ideologues that it is really hard to listen to at times. It was great too hear someone bring a little bit of rationality to this conversation.
Love these types of videos Colin. Great mix of politics and gaming combined with a (sensible) point of view that differed from 99% of games media. Keep it up man 👍
This is actually the first video of yours I have watched, and I could not agree more. I was a Moderator at Capcom during the time of Resident Evil 5 god that was a shit storm. So this hit home for me.
This is a well thought out commentary on the slide that much of media is taking. I'm grateful that it is more hopeful and optimistic that I feared it would be.
How dare a creator make something in their own vision, and when jumped on by liberal media, not cow tow and apologize, and then change the art they are making to suit everyone else. This same media might tell you of free speech and the freedom of artistic expression. Hypocrisy at its worst.
I heard another outlet covering this story and it was told very slanted and deceptive to support their hive mind perspective. It's so refreshing to hear a voice of logic and reason in games media, so rare.
Let's be honest. I live in Bohemia for all my life, and apart of few vietnamiese people, I dont know personally anyone with different skin colour. I am pretty sure that the same goes for those 9 square kilometres even now, since its rural part of country...
Nothing feels me with joy more than seeing Resetera losing their minds over the success of this game. Lets hope The Last Night is a good game and successful so we can see the ultimate meltdown
Tim Soret's game. Got a lot of praise at last E3 then they found out he'd supported gamergate too so tried to sink it but failed. He's got a real backbone too. He still calls out leftist nonsense today even though his game's still not out.
I have been facing a moral dilemma recently. I am a Game Journalist who is only really just starting to earn any sort of money from it, last week I was offered a regular writing gig at a site which was accused back in 2014 of being pro-gamergate. Much like you, I was largely appalled at both sides of the arguement, given the disrespectful and angry rhetoric spouted by many involved. I had been thinking to turn down this offer, fearing that it may damage my career in the eyes of other potential employers, namely those who are vocally anti-gamergate. This video has helped me realise the kind of journalist I want to be; reliable, accurate and reputable above all else. I want to be better than these petty, often rumour-feulled disputes, and will do so by reporting the whole story, separate from agenda and the fear that I may be upsetting people on either side of an issue. Just wanted to say thank you, your level-headed, reasonable approach to debate and discussion is something I have taken to heart as a writer. Wish you all the best and again, thank you for acting as another side to so many arguments.
Yknow I actually remember when all this was happening, and anyone even associated with Gamergate was being ruined publically. And i can admit, as someone who was neck deep in the 'pro-gamergate' side, it was a crap show. The vast majority of us really DID just want to talk about ethics in game journalism, and the growing social justice nature of the games press, but there was too much noise, too much of an internet slap fight. The emergence of the alt right, and the growing power of the regressive left. Didn't matter what the truth was, and doesn't matter if you're really a misogynist or not. As long as you get called one. What happened to this developer, and what happened with the gamergate controversy was a symptom of an emerging problem; the disgusting, polarized nature of social commentary and politics today. Nobody wants to talk, everyone just wants to declare the other side as evil.
I bought it last week when I heard about this “controversy.” it’s pretty good! We’ve reached the point of censorship in all mediums. Knew this would happen. Now creators need to check every single box or else they are biggots.
Okay man, you've earned a sub. Nuance seems to have died out in today's public discourse. I come from Slovakia, so former Czechoslovakia, I study the Viking and Anglo-Saxons in the UK. That's like a lightning rod for PC crusaders. Every society is comprised of people of many different ethnicities, but there is generally a pattern to it. Just like today, the diverse areas are generally big cities, trade hubs, because that's where the money is, where the profit is made. Kingdom Come: Deliverance however does not take place in a large city. It's set in the Czech countryside, on a 9km squared patch of land. You can't shrink the whole society and all its diverse elements into that space, especially not if you want to be historically accurate. No, medieval Europe wasn't all white, but it was mostly white. And the whitest parts were the countryside. All these things matter if you want to judge historical accuracy. That's nuance. But commentators don't seem interested. They'll ask a historian "Was medieval Bohemia all white in 15th century?" Of course the historian will say "No, it wasn't." But that's not the whole answer and no one seems to ask for clarification. How can a historian give a good answer if they don't know where exactly in the country the game takes place?
My stance on this and any story being told in any form of entertainment is why should anyone include a certain race/culture/etc if it doesnt fit the narrative they want to tell? One shouldnt feel the need to include any form of representation in order to feed the need of the public. I remember Colin talking about the same issue about the Witcher(if im not mistaken). And the quote the end beautifully sums up everything. Another well done vid Colin. Thanks.
I can't tell you the last time I went to a games news/review website and took the article seriously. I don't remember the last time I looked at one at all. It makes me sad to say this because I used to go to IGN daily between 2004-2010.
Thanks for watching! Have a great week! -Colin
This episode was really well written (no suprise)
it's inspiring
Colin's Last Stand: Side Quest thanks Colin, you too
Thank you Colin for explaining this, I was confused about the game, kept reading Comments in Social Media that the game is Racist and kept thinking WTF are they taking about, I don't see no racism in the game on UA-cam. Have not bought the game because I'm waiting for God of War.
I fucking despise people who attack artistic freedom in the name of inclusion. It's unbelievably counterproductive.
It's complete oppression. If you can't express yourself. SJW are low key slavers. They will be dealt with in the future and that is a fact. Logic dictates it. Question is; will morals prevent logic from triumphing?
Your measured and reasonable commentary on topics that usually incite people to hysterics is ever appreciated Colin.
How about we just let people create the stories they want to create, okay?
Ask yourself this: Does including or not including a certain race or culture in an entertainment medium keep you up at night? If the answer is yes, then you have way bigger problems at hand than a simple video game.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance. A video game for people who like video games.
Oh good, thank god I'm not one of those people. If I have to like video games go like this game then I'm good!
Well said; even the RPG for people who just want a great RPG.
Damn right fuck SJW' s who think otherwise
We deserve a better games media.
We deserve a better media in general.
Colin, you are one of the most rational persones on the internet.
Keep going keep being rational
A site like Waypoint explicitly saying "We're not gonna cover this" is the best advertisement for the game ever. If they really wanted to ruin him, they'd just say nothing.
Gordon Freemason. Waypoint is a joke
Show me where Waypoint said they want to ruin him.
Did you listen to the Waypoint podcast because I keep seeing people mention it when they clearly havent listened to it :I
They were talking about why they werent covering it and a fair bit about how to deal with situations like this where something might be controversial.
"Resetera: a place where people who don't play games come together to talk about games."
The realest part of this video.
As a person born and raised in this part of Europe (Ukraine), I don't see no problems in the way Kingdom Come and Witcher are in this aspect.
then according to SJW's then that makes you a Nazi whose no better than Hitler :-)
Thankfully, not all of them are total idiots.
Ukraine and Czechia are not in the same part of Europe. You serious?
As someone who firmly believes in voting with your wallet, I will certainly buy this game. Not because I agree with everything it represents (I don’t, in fact) but because I want game-makers to know that they can create something that they believe in, and won’t be punished if it’s different than what everyone else thinks.
Well, it helps that it is probably the best game since Witcher 3. Just needs a couple patches to sand the rougher edges.
+Steve Paul - Out of curiosity, what are the things the game represents you don't agree with?
Get this dev on your podcast
yes!
I would watch the hell out of that!
How much do we need to donate to make this happen
I don't have much interest in this game as a game... but I almost want to buy the game on the principle to support a studio sticking to their guns to the witch hunters damning them.
Winston Gray you and me both, I can't believe this nonsense.
I want to say I can't blieve it either... but unfortauntely everything Colin talked about is so common in games media. (or just the media in general).
That RE5 issue was like the first SJW incursion I ever remember. It was before it happened regularly.
I mean it was for killing black people but either way not racist
Sure, point being the game was taking place in a fictitious country in a region of Africa with the vast majority of the population being black. The imagery of a white man killing black people didn't have the same effect on the Japanese developers as it does to Americans and Europeans and they were just being realistic in their depiction of the area.
Yeah I remember being kinda shocked reading the articles about the insensitivity of the game developers and trying to wrap my head around the silliness of it all.
If only we knew just how vapid and regressive things would become...
It had no effect on me as a white european at all. I didn't even think that people would see it as racist until I heard of the ordeal.
I'm glad to see that despite the backlash, Colin isn't shying away from speaking the truth.
I've played Dark Souls 5 times and haven't used a single spell :-)
Lol
Gordon Freemason *Looks at you strangely * Pyro or nothing (royalty in the case of Demon's and Traveler in DS2)
Eh, there's always alchemy. Making some potions or poison. Its..a type of magic? :P I got it and it's so much fun but damn it took me a while to find a bed to sleep in. Dx Just the first part of getting out of the castle was a pain with the lockpicking mechanic.
richard killface i don't play pvp ina those games also Pyromancy can take down some bosses before they get to you
ike of Pyke
bro the locals would have burned you at the stake for using magic
Gordon Freemason but Chech people are white so it doesn't count.
Twitter is probably the worst possible way to attempt to have a nuanced discussion, as you know. Good on Vávra for sticking to his vision though.
Daniel Vavre is my new hero.
The game got that free GTA controversy advertising. Look who gets the last laugh?
BUT MUH REPRESENTATION! YOU GOTTA REPRESENT
God damn this is who should represent us gamers! Articulate, factual, unbias, and chill as fuck. You might be the 1st person I ever try patreon for!
I tried a pirated version of it and found a great game, bought the game today..no problem paying for quality
E1V1A ok man, theres plenty of 'european junk' that can tell plenty an interesting story and at least for me that what counts
better= smoother gameplay but often gets boring very quickly?
could be just a genre or engine preference
beside jankier gameplay is a quirk of new and inexperiences studios, not much comes mastered at the first attempt
E1V1A
E1V1A - you could be talking about 'scrolls/fallout game made by Bethesda.
The one thing I'm surprised by with this game so far is how the map is crafted, I have yet to see anything out of place, like a tree floating or miss-aligned ground textures. In a game like the elder scrolls I could not go 5 mins without noticing it. This game has the potential to be much more polished than that, a few of the mechanics and scripting errors is nothing compared to a game where the developer cant be arsed and copies and pastes huge parts of the map, you can tell they took some level of care with what the had to work with.
quality? with the amount of bugs that have...
How dare a game set in central Europe during the medieval era have no black people! Racistism.
Keep exposing this BS, Colin.
There really weren’t many African or Arab people in that area in 1403 (which I believe is when this game is set in, may be wrong)
Maybe it’s just me but I don’t need a horde of white people telling me I need to be represented in something like this.
Well spoken.
Fun fact North Africans and Arabs are actually Caucasian, just darker skin complexion(People confuse ethnicity and race too much Caucasians are actually quite diverse in appearance) :) they have a lot in common with the people of Southern Europe and Iberia, I'm Greek and I have an olive skin complexion and I tan really well I could probably pass for Italian or Spanish, And to the Twitter screen shot in the video The Moors were North African not black, SJW's love to bring them up in these discussions, and while we're at it the "Latino/Hispanic is a race" myth that's another stupid one there are almost Latino's of every race lmao the label literally only refers to your cultural and linguistic heritage
Source- My grandmother was an anthropologist
What I love about this show is that basically every Episode is like reading one of your long form pieces back at ign.
If we want games to be respected as an art form, then we need to allow creators to express themselves freely.
Deal. With. It.
I'll take reality over political correctness any day.
The Majestic Spider I wasn't talking to you.
I can already see the headlines..."Not enough people of color (including white people!) in Ghost of Tsushima
Simple choice to make tbh.
i'll carve every word in stone brother.
DanLuxe stay safe and stay strong 💪🏽 my dude
There are not tones in comments, So to be more clear, read my comment without "including white people". i was being sarcastic/cynical
When it comes to Kingdom Come, I'm just offended that the game isn't coming out on Switch.
I'm so happy to see you cover this game Colin.
I really enjoy having your perspective when it comes to games available again. I’m really glad to have you back around in games Colin.
Daniel Vavra is one of the bravest people in the industry. Probably on the level with Yoko Taro.
He risks reputation, money, his future for many years, for the sake of his creative intent.
With great respect from Russia.
All of your videos are fantastic Colin, but this on goes above and beyond. Thank you.
Literally had no idea about any of this controversy til watching this. Glad I'm in the loop now. Good coverage.
Colin, thank you so much for all of the content. You're one of the most rational and level headed people on this platform. Period. Keep that shit up!
I had no idea about this story surrounding Kingdom Come. Excellent Work Colin!! Informative and intellectual as usual!
This is hands down my favorite episode you have released, everything you say hits the mark. Keep being you Colin.
Gotta love that intro post on ResetEra. "we want to have free discussion here, but anyone who defends anything Vavra says will be moderated."
eloquent and excellently said.
I'm playing it on Xbox One, and it's fantastic.
Playing on ps4...most immersive rpg since morrowind.
Maybe wait for it to get patched because it has bugs (some people have many but some don't encounter any).
The game media is powerless, they threw everything at Vavra, and achieved nothing. You, sir, are what we need, an unbiased commenter!
I wonder if they would shout racism if a game was made that took place in ancient Africa about warring tribes that features only black characters? 🤔
Tommy Meyers id buy it. Id also like a three kingdoms game like kingdom come
RE5 and the whole "omg racism"-shit surrounding it. Nuff said.
The games media is so overwhelmingly filled with leftist ideologues that it is really hard to listen to at times. It was great too hear someone bring a little bit of rationality to this conversation.
Always enjoy your in-depth research and dedication to defending ideas and opinions based on facts instead of emotion. Keep up the great work Colin!
Ah Colin.......you are a fucking legend! Awesome vid dude! Keep up the awesome work! Thousands and thousands of ppl love what you do!
Love these types of videos Colin. Great mix of politics and gaming combined with a (sensible) point of view that differed from 99% of games media. Keep it up man 👍
Patrick Klepek REEEEEing into his pillow after he saw the sales numbers.
Thanks to Kingdom Come Deliverance I stumbled upon Colin Moriarty's channel. Subscribed.
Great video Colin. I had no idea this was even happening, but I also avoid most of the sites that would even make that an issue.
I still can't believe this guy was ostracized by the gaming industry because of a joke. Their loss.
Congrats Colin, definitely the best CLS related video you've made!
This is actually the first video of yours I have watched, and I could not agree more. I was a Moderator at Capcom during the time of Resident Evil 5 god that was a shit storm. So this hit home for me.
This makes me ABSOLUTELY 100% certain I will buy this game to support this man, this game and this studio. Fuck yes.
Dude I was waiting for you to cover this since I heard about the topic on funhaus. Great thoughts and very insightful video, keep it up!
Videos keep getting better and better! Thanks and keep up he great work Colin! I’m gonna try KC:D soon!
Yep, I'm gonna shill that hard.
Thanks.
Exemplary as always Colin, I couldn't put it better myself. Keep fighting the good fight!
I can't tell you the last time I went to a games news/review website and took the article seriously. I don't remember the last time I looked at one at all. It makes me sad to say this because I used to go to IGN daily between 2004-2010.
They're a loud minority, don't give them any attention. More games like this celebrating history are most appreciated.
Great commentary Colin. Also thoroughly enjoyed your sit down with Sam Harris. Keep the good work!
