Reaper: Tale of a Pale Swordsman: An Analogue to History

- Hexage's Reaper - Tale of a Pale Swordsman is a gorgeous 2D side scrolling fighting game originally developed for mobile devices. In this video I discuss the combat mechanics and the surprisingly profound and sophisticated story with significant analogues to the history of colonialism in the Americas.
This video is a Review, as opposed to an Analysis. Here, I only play the game one or two times, and discuss it generally. Unlike other analysis videos, this is not a comprehensive moment by moment critique of the game.
Still undecided as to what I'm doing next. I have started some other projects, but no clue which will work out or be released first.
I'm actually surprised people still pay attention to this game, I thought I was the only one who even remembered it. Thank you for making this video, I even started playing the game again.
Ah yes I remember
Loved it as a kid
The mobile game that was way beyond it's time.
I would say it's remarkable, good art style and game mechanics, paired with a great story and world building to go along with.
I love this game and I don't think there's enough people talking about it, great video and review structure!
Thanks for the compliments! This game definitely did not get the attention it deserved, and I don't think that Hexage as a developer does either. I encourage you to try out their newer releases; they're both quite different from Reaper but they are interesting!
OK sure, I'll check them out. Thanks for the recommendations!
I wish reaper the tale of a pale swordsman would get a part 2 but he gets some relax now because he deserves it also i wish he meets new friends that would always be by his side but its kinda impossible to happen i just wish a good ending for our reaper hero he deserves it
What do you mean he deserves it? From ruthless killing-for-hire, to genocidal battles, to endless greed and blackmail, I think its better he stays alone!
@@neopabo bro? Those were YOUR choices no one's forcing you to be like that
When I played this as a kid, all I saw was a fun little game, jumping around, upgrading, fighting, it was fun
But when I decided to replay it, the lore got me so invested
And when I finally reached the end I could only ask my self one question
"What am I fighting for?!!"
Yo half of your gameplay footage is CLEAN AF
Yeah, my footage is pretty good.
This is too beautiful of a video essay for a mobile game. I smell an underrated youtuber...
Amazing video and analysis. It's rare to find such underrated channels that put this much effort in their videos like you do.
wait, have I found the most underrated UA-camr ever?..
Possibly...
Best of luck
Loved this video. Its such a good analysis on a old game that was forgotten. I actually wanted to do an analysis on this game too as i replayed it and the game was as good as i remembered. Keep up the high quality content :)
I've got a theory that Reaper and Hexage's latest game Ritual are connected. At the end of Ritual you defeat a legit god and go to a place to find "the throne of god" which allows you to achieve godhood, or at least the one who controls the host. The protagonist's body is controlled by an entity that is known to kill gods and was left behind on the throne. Maybe in later thousand's of year(s) the land has shifted and Reaper is actually what was left behind and remains some of the powers that throne and entity had. It is also said in Ritual that the body has drastically changed when the entity transported itself into the body, so it is possible that the host and Reaper are the same character.
Man, I've had ritual installed for some time now, but haven't had time to play it. Maybe there's another video in that game?
@@arvinkhoshboresh Oh absolutely
One of the best and most underrated UA-camrs out there. And one of the best and most underrated games too.
Yes! I am not the only one who finds similarities between Reaper and HK. Besides combat system, I also find them similar because both protags are god/demon king slayers, and are both "soulless" in a way even though that is exactly what keeps them reappearing, and that the cards and charms act similar.
Ye ikr
What is HK ?

One aspect of all Hexage games is the fact there all connected as apart of the same timeline. This connection in how there all different variations of the numerous periods throughout history. For example Redcon is an analogy to the period of World wars, or Cold War.
When we lost zorka and Milo and the godchild I was devastated
Connor strikes me as the kind of guy to build crit or some shit
This genuinely helped me cope after witnessing the end myself
Just finished the game. I've got to say, it's really underrated. Nice video btw.
I grew up with this game. it's so good.
wow, didn't expect to find a review of this game...
I really ducking love this game.
I would recommend anybody to play this.
I agree!
On another note, why are you so sad, sad cat :(
Because my wife took my kids and now I have to pay child support even though I only get to see my son and daughter once a month
@@siggymilfordjigutzpilgrid damn, I'm really sorry to hear that :( hope things improve for you in the future.
@@arvinkhoshboresh thanks
Wow this is a hidden gem
The only thing that sucks about this game is the level cap and ending. I've been trying to get the dark legend edition but it only says service unavailable even when im online
the gameplay is truly sastisfying to watch
I love Hexage games, especially the recent ones because they always have such a great hidden story for those that look to find it.
Damn bro, nice video, would have been better if Connor wasnt so bad at Monster Hunter tho :/
wow, I often play this game again, it's very good and nostalgic
i would love if they made a squeal with your ideas in mind
The reaper just lose everything at the end. Everyone close to him die, and I find that he is a very tragic character in that way. He couldn't protect anyone even after seemingly slaying all the demons and the god demon. Maybe that the true demons were the ones inside of each of them all along.
How did you find out that Reaper's plot was a reference to the real life Natives vs English conflict? Did you have to find it out on your own or was it recognizable for you from early on?
Well I wouldn't say that I "found out", nessecarily. The meaning of Art is always a matter of interpretation, right? But it seemed like a meaningful comparison to draw. On that note, I spent a lot of time trying to make sure that the comparison I was making actually made sense in the historical context. Hope I managed it will :P
@@arvinkhoshboresh Nice!
What I also meant was if you happen to know the natives and modern civilization conflict from somewhere before, like in history book or so. Also, how are you at the moment? The less frequent amount of videos tells me that you are very busy with real-life stuff right now and that the views on your videos don't pay that well. If that's the case, take your time and do it when you feel like it.
Ah, I see what you meant. I've always been pretty interested in history, so I can always draw some parallels in situations like this. And to some extent, this game itself IS about the meeting of an imperial force with natives of a new world.
On the other note, yes, I have indeed been very busy. I don't like leaving for months on end, and doing so definitely does not do me any favors when it comes to the recommendation algorithm ;) however, even though progress is very slow, I am working on a new video. It's by far the largest video I've made so far, and in many ways it's the video I wanted to make when I first started this channel. It's about halfway done.
@@arvinkhoshboreshid say it’s closer to Spanish colonization of Mesoamérica
I WILL NEVER FORGET WHTA THEY DID TO MILO AND ZORKA!!!!!!!!!😢
What’s the fastest way to get money in this game
best game ever
Sad i only had the Demo. Had to, "sail the seven seas" to get the full game, but i got bored.
