Nice review John! You make learning about this guitar fun by the way you present it. I have the AVRI Jaguar 1962 reissue thanks in part to you. I am solving the difficulty in bending the notes with a mastery bridge. Other wise, it is a very elegant and beautiful guitar with such a great neck, wonderful fretboard, lovely finishes and all in all great craftsmanship.
0:59 I don't know why but I love it when he says "the guitar that started it all." He sounds like your friend that's had a few too many beers who is awesome to hang out with haha
I played one of these at Guitar Center today. After trying many types of guitars over the years it was my first time playing a Jaguar. I was surprised at how different it was from my strat. Loved the neck and the sound was very cool. I played it through a Twin Reverb so I did not get to hear it with some distortion but it was a pretty cool guitar. A nice change of pace.
Hi Debi, The mute is suppose to come with the guitar and it's a total no-brainer to flip in and out of position. Hope you like the guitar if you get it. Most people think of those guitars as surf music instruments but it's really in the hands of the player. Thanks for your interest. John
i once had one (and i'm gonna get a new one in a few days) they can play everything, one of the (if not THE) best guitar i have ever owned, i played all from alternativ rock, Indie, blues, jazz to hard rock on this guitar, and it fitted most of them perfect.
@nunopumpkin Depends on the demand for them, because when Fender first discontinued the Jazzmaster and Jaguar they went dirt cheap due to lack of demand, that's why alot of Alt Rock guitarists during the mid 80's/early 90's used them
The Mosrites use to come with tiny frets which aren't good for bending notes. Since I was into blues that didn't work for me. I always liked the way they looked and sounded and I loved the surf music people played on them.
I have the same guitar but in sea foam green. I love it! I'm thinking about getting a sunburst, as it's my favourite finish, especially on a Jag with all that chrome! Cheers, Dave
@JazzmastersFTW I was talking above the guitar itself, not the stuff on it. Whomever had the guitar before he got it added a new knob and a switch or two, and added in two Dimarzio humbuckers as well. The guitar was most likely a normal S/S Jag before it was modded.
hey yea I'm deciding between these 2 too! I'm more of a rhythm player, just prefer a good crunch sound, and I like the scooped mids that the jag has ... but the les paul standard is pretty good too (if not for the weight) ... can't decide!
@bumblefritz It really depends on future demand. It's hard to predict if the American Reissues will go up in value the way that 60's and 70's Fender have. There are certain 80's Japanese Fender reissues that have been trending up in value. Hope that helps. Enjoy your guitar.
@MelosAntropon True, but when surf guitarists started using the Jazzmaster (instead of the jazz players Fender had aimed at when they introduced the Jazzmaster at '58 NAMM) Fender actually created the shorter-scale Jaguar specifically to meet the needs of surf guitarists. Both were considered "high-end" guitars by comparison to the Stratocaster (and the Telecaster, which the Strat was supposed to replace). Funny how plans sometimes work out.
Nice review ,have a quick decesion I went to buy my used Johnny Marr and a clean 62 reissue USA is there and $100 less now I'm struggling as I like Marrs thicker neck , decesion time.
whats the difference between the jaguar hh and this one. Is it just one has the humbuckers and this one has the single coil pickups, thats the only difference?
I noticed that your use of the mute didn't throw the guitar out of pitch a half step. Mine seems to do that. Any advice? My Jag still has the original bridge saddles and grub screws.
Hi John, I'm looking to buy a new Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar but I wouldn't know how to adjust the action. How would you adjust the action of a Jazzmaster or Jaguar?
These guitars are great I had an original black one that my brother stole from me and I miss it a lot the only thing I didnt like was the feel of the neck but it was a great guitar thanks for the post Paul
The upper controls are more than just a repositioning of the tone/volume. The tone circuit has a much lower value on the upper controls that gives a flatter sound more suited for jazz.
@RedPetrol76.. thanks a lot.. but in the end for which guitar you are reffered to? i usually play grunge.. u think that the mustang is the best choice?
Hi john wonderful review as always, if you had to choose one guitar between jaguar and jazzmaster for surf music and spaghetti western music which one would it be? I love them both but i can only get one. Thank' s a lot.
@DDInDaHouse187 I bought my Jaguar because it was my dream guitar, and being 15 years old at the time working at a shit job it took like over a year to save up for. I'm never selling this thing. I was just curious on the subject. I have noticed however that Jags/Jazzies are going up in price. When I bought mine in '05 it was around $1,499 (alot of dough for a 15 year old), and now on most sites they are listed as $1,699.
I might suggest replacing the bridge pickup for hard rock/punk, the stock single coils are a little thin, some of the reissues have brass plates for shielding, so it can cost quite a bit to route it out (assuming you have a tech do the work). A single slot humbucker might be worth looking at. You could also try a fuzz pedal instead of a distortion pedal to thicken up the sound (for example an EHX Big Muff instead of a Boss DS-1). It worked just fine for me.
Jagmaster is another option. It has the same solid alder body and 24" neck. But it has the Strat bridge and double humbuckers. Less than 300 dollars and well worth the money. Lots of great parts available to modify it any way you like, also. If i buy a guitar with solid tailpiece it will be an Epiphone Dot or other Gibson type guitar.
Use the rhythm circuit with the volume rolled all the way down and play on the lead circuit. Once you switch from lead to rhythm it will act as a killswitch.
Now, I am considering this guitar, but I love palying way more than blues and I was wondering if this guitar is any good for punk, hard rock, metal, jazz, etc?
I have a question: I have a 2005 American made Fender '62 Reissue Jaguar (3-color sunburst). How does the value of a reissue guitar go up when compared to a (that year) model. Like in 40 years would my 2005 ('62 reissue) be worth the same amount or comparable to a Jaguar with specs new to 2005 an actual '05 model (Comparable condition)? I don't think they made a 2005 specific model; but I'm just wondering if reissues are doomed to have a lower value because they are in face "reissues"?
I bought two of these in white, from the Corona plant musicians friend.com. I returned the first due to a bad switch that I didn't want to mess with. I really miss mine. I want another one. . but I am torn tween the Jag and the Jazz. How does the shorter scale change the tone. . and I have always wondered why Leo built a flag ship guitar (at the time) in the short scale? Please advise if you will!
Have had mine for...2 days now, people, this is the shit, absolutely amazing, been my dream guitar for so long and believe me, it lives up to the hype...and I play rock!
the jazzmaster has a rythym circuit 3 way selector switch a 25.5 scale and large p-90 like pickups... the jaguar has a rythym circuit 2 on and off selector switches a phase inverter switch a 24 scale and strat like pickups
hey john i've been watching some of your videos, you're a great player, i was wondering if you can help me with a little something, is the classic player special reissue as good sounding as this one? and also, can a jaguar play like blues and pink floyd kinda stuff?, thanks dude.
John: Excellent exposition of the Jaguar - bravo! One quibble: It was not (as far as surf music) the "guitar that started it all" - it's predecessor (by two years) the Fender Jazzmaster, was. Other than that, a great video!
@WhoTheRollingBeatles Actually this instrument has been used for many bands of the shoegaze genre. While that might not be the exact genre your hoping to use it for it generally pushes the distortion and overdrive envelope much more then metal or rock bands do, so I think it's safe to say you'd love to use this instrument.
have you ever listened to surf music? it's always heavy on the reverb, and that's what a lot of people associate jaguars with. not to mention they were also popular with shoegazers who used a ton of reverb & delay.
I've listened to the video of ATE and feel it's more of a clear Jag tone than a hard core punk rock sound. It's a bit more overdriven than your typical surf sound but I'd still consider this a clear tone. Don't you think? Thanks
you see the Jaguar pickups are very close the strings, but strat pickups have to be set a certain way..what gives? they both are single coil pickups, I dont buy the magnet pull theory.. I like my guitar loud and clean/dclear sounding. Whats your take John?
very nice guitar!! herman's hermits used the mute for the song Mrs. Brown youve got a lovely daughter, the bee gees used it for the song 3 kisses of love... very nice review... thanks for the nice review...I ave learned so much from your posts....how much is this guitar?
Listen up! If the pickups on the Strat are too close to the strings the guitar won't play in tune. The strings get pulled sharp especially when you're on the higher frets. Thanks for the comments and everyone keep an open mind.
@dragonboy2992 Jazzmaster pickups are NOT like P90s. The magnets are the pole-pieces, where the P90's have bar magnets. Also, the switch on the Jag isn't a phase inverter, it's a "thin" switch. It has nothing to do with phase.
This is the most straightforward explanation of the madness of the Jag that I've seen. Nice work!
Best revue of all those on the Jaguar.
Man that's very bright sounding I always want a Fender Jaguar guitar
Yeah, Fenders are Fenders and have a unique bright twangy sound. Thanks for the interest.
Nice review John! You make learning about this guitar fun by the way you present it. I have the AVRI Jaguar 1962 reissue thanks in part to you. I am solving the difficulty in bending the notes with a mastery bridge. The amount of different tones available on this guitar is incredible... So versatile! Love the muter as well
0:59 I don't know why but I love it when he says "the guitar that started it all." He sounds like your friend that's had a few too many beers who is awesome to hang out with haha
I really like the sound with the reverb turned on. Lovely guitar.
Nice review, very pleasant to watch! At last I understand how those Jag controls work.. I never tried one yet. Many thanks
Cool review, I loved learning about the background about the guitar
This video has incredibly awesome audio. I am very impressed.
I played one of these at Guitar Center today. After trying many types of guitars over the years it was my first time playing a Jaguar.

A fine guitar I love playing my Jag. Thanks for sharing.
A great guitar, I love playing mine.
Thanks for sharing.
Good points. Thanks for adding to the video. That's what it's about. Contributing to help others learn.
i once had one (and i'm gonna get a new one in a few days) they can play everything, one of the (if not THE) best guitar i have ever owned, i played all from alternativ rock, Indie, blues, jazz to hard rock on this guitar, and it fitted most of them perfect.
@JazzmastersFTW Yeah some of my favorite bands used Jazzmasters, I might look into them some day soon.
Though it might have roots in surf, I feel like the auto palm mute would be wonderful for poppunk music. Beautiful guitar.
@nunopumpkin Depends on the demand for them, because when Fender first discontinued the Jazzmaster and Jaguar they went dirt cheap due to lack of demand, that's why alot of Alt Rock guitarists during the mid 80's/early 90's used them

i luv jaguars i just got one for christmas...theres so many type of sounds u can get with it
I have the same guitar but in sea foam green. I love it! I'm thinking about getting a sunburst, as it's my favourite finish, especially on a Jag with all that chrome! Cheers, Dave

John I really appreciate your lessons, reviews and sense of humour! Thanks you! by the way I think you're a very tasty guitar player.
Can someone please tell me, what's the different is between Fender Jaguar and Fender Jazzmaster?
@bumblefritz It really depends on future demand. It's hard to predict if the American Reissues will go up in value the way that 60's and 70's Fender have. There are certain 80's Japanese Fender reissues that have been trending up in value. Hope that helps. Enjoy your guitar.
Beautiful guitar and nice video...thanks!
Do you know where one can pick one of these up in Canada? I have a strat, but I haven't seen these anywhere lol!
Nice review ,have a quick decesion I went to buy my used Johnny Marr and a clean 62 reissue USA is there and $100 less now I'm struggling as I like Marrs thicker neck , decesion time.
Anyone know how well a jaguar can do a David Gilmour-ish type pink floyd sound? Or earlier Syd Barrett kind of sound?
whats the difference between the jaguar hh and this one. Is it just one has the humbuckers and this one has the single coil pickups, thats the only difference?
Actually works well with fuzz. I played in the late sixties with the original Fuzz Box and a 67 jag. Of course the Twin Reverb amp may have helped.
How would you adjust the action of a Jazzmaster or Jaguar?
hey what is better for indie rock..the jag with the single coils, or the humbuckers?
Also the darling of Alternative/Indie Rock!
Cool. I'll check this band out. Thanks, John
great review!
The mute is similar to the Gretsch Country Gentleman Chet Atkins...
Cool guitar john..
i'm in love of this guitar..
These two guitars have different scale lengths so maybe that will help you decide....Thanks, John
To fit the mute onto the Fender Jaguar, is there any "drilling" involved?
I like this guitar but a mainly play alternative music like nirvana and pop punk ish stuff, would this guitar be good for me?
These guitars are great I had an original black one that my brother stole from me and I miss it a lot the only thing I didnt like was the feel of the neck but it was a great guitar
thanks for the post
Paul
that auto-palm mute feature = GENIUS! wish there was some way to put it on my strat
what was the first riff you were playing at the start of the video.
pretty innovative guitar for the time. then again Fender, back in the day, was kicking out some crazy ideas.
does it sound good with my vox ac15 h1tv?
were you playing a variation on "sparks" to begin the video?
The upper controls are more than just a repositioning of the tone/volume. The tone circuit has a much lower value on the upper controls that gives a flatter sound more suited for jazz.
Nice review.
@RedPetrol76.. thanks a lot.. but in the end for which guitar you are reffered to? i usually play grunge.. u think that the mustang is the best choice?
Well, it's not a garden tool. For everyone out here wondering, how do you use reverb? Is there a way to explain it?
Hi john wonderful review as always, if you had to choose one guitar between jaguar and jazzmaster for surf music and spaghetti western music which one would it be?
I love them both but i can only get one.
Thank' s a lot.

@johnhguitar I am, but I'd like to know tone-wise, is it appropriate?
can this guitar sound good for funk , punk , hard rock and blues??? how does it sound with distorted?
Inside the posts there's a hole for an Allen key I think?
I think the pick ups on any solid body guitar can make it play and sound more like what you want. Up to you man...........
Jagmaster is another option. It has the same solid alder body and 24" neck. But it has the Strat bridge and double humbuckers. Less than 300 dollars and well worth the money. WHere is the trus rod???
@tvicena nothing with fender on the headstock has a set neck

I'm drooling for that guitar... must touch it!!!
how much did that guitar cost, I didn't see it at sam ash or anything but it sounds amazing
I need all the help I can get! Thanks!

you're great dude keep it up!
I think people would change the pickups for that kind of approach.
Anyone with an idea?

Yeah Joey. Just about the guitar and not about me. I'm going for a general opinion and that's about it.
Thanks for the interest.
you see the Jaguar pickups are very close the strings, but strat pickups have to be set a certain way..what gives? they both are single coil pickups, I dont buy the magnet pull theory.. I like my guitar loud and clean/dclear sounding.

I'd love to have the tabs for the song at the beginning!
Very good!! perfect guitar
very nice guitar!! herman's hermits used the mute for the song Mrs. Brown youve got a lovely daughter, the bee gees used it for the song 3 kisses of love... very nice review... thanks for the nice review...I ave learned so much from your posts....how much is this guitar?
I thought the newer Jaguars didn't come with the mute?
@bumblefritz i think it also depends on what Fender will be producing in the future. If they would stop producing jaguars it would sky high.
@JazzmastersFTW Me neither, I do like the way they look, but I'm a Strat addict.
Listen up! If the pickups on the Strat are too close to the strings the guitar won't play in tune. The strings get pulled sharp especially when you're on the higher frets.
Thanks for the comments and everyone keep an open mind.
is it normal the 'fender jaguar logo' on the head (where the tune key's are) is with a sticker? or am I fooked by my dealer?
I play a Les Paul, and I'm debating on getting a Jaguar. What do you think?
@BackingTracks6661 Thats fine, i want an american made guitar, I just want to know if i can take the sticker off
@dragonboy2992 Jazzmaster pickups are NOT like P90s. The magnets are the pole-pieces, where the P90's have bar magnets. Also, the switch on the Jag isn't a phase inverter, it's a "thin" switch. It has nothing to do with phase.
