Pretty amazing that Panasonic is still supporting a 2 year old camera with significant feature updates.

They updated it again this April! I just bought another to be able to dual wield without having to swap out my prime lenses. The IBIS helps immensely too so I won't be weighed down by tripods or even a monopod unless I need the extra stability for low-light situations or sports events... which is rare for my use case. Thanks to Panasonic for this. I got body #2 for 550 USD, making it my best high-value purchase for a while.

The G9 is such a wonderful camera, especially as a B-roll, IBIS, and stills camera to complement the GH-5S. Since the GH series went all-in with video, it is the G9 which recaptures that brilliant hybrid experience we loved on the GH-1 and GH-2 where stills were still a major part of the camera.
Absolutely agree!! I decided to purchase the G9 right after reading the new features of the firmware updates a couple of days ago. Before that i had been wondering which one to buy, the GH5 or the G9 since the G9 seemed to lack video recording capabilities compared to the GH5. But now the new updates really confirm that the G9 is so insane with powerful configuration ! Panasonic truely tried to hold the G9 back with the old firmwares just to save the GH5.

Just got my G9 back from Panacare for some minor repairs, which were hassle-free and prompt. Now this great firmware update. I'm a happy Panny customer.

One feature I would LOVE to see on more Panasonic cameras is the ability to map the focus ring response speed of focus-by-wire lenses. I don't recall the name of this feature, but it is available on S1H. After shooting on Sony FS5 for a couple years, I'm back to shooting Panasonic (GH5 and EVA1) and pleased to see what they are offering again.

The 30 minute maximum and the ability to choose between PAL or NTSC makes the GH5 a keeper for me.
I love Panasonic for doing this for my beloved G9!

I found it pretty tough to decide between the GH5 and G9 and but have been very happy with my decision to go for the G9, given the photography focused features and excellent stabilization. This upgrade basically adds all GH5 features that I was wish were on the G9 when comparing the two and makes the G9 an even more capable video camera.
I'm actually most excited about the manual settings for slow motion. Only wish you could also record sound in slow-mo

Definitely a fantastic upgrade of the G9. It's been on my list for a long time, this just makes it even more compelling.
I ended up buying a G9 in mid 2020, and it has been fantastic. 10bit mov files in 4k and 1080p, and the possibility to upgrade to v log L.
And Boom, My G9 has the features I need out of the GH5. Just did the upgrade and ordered the SFU1 . Thanks for the review.

I'm a videographer and I bought the G9 over the GH5 as a B cam a couple of months ago as I liked it's photography capabilities enough to work with its video options. Feel like I've hit the jackpot making the investment now!

Hey guys thanks for the video! I was just wondering what high bit rate options Panasonic added to 1080P? In the video @2:48 it shows 10 bit 60fps in 1080P, but what are the other FPS and their bit rates in 1080p?

Owning and heavy using a G9 for over a year now. Loving it. However: a couple of weeks ago I bought a GH5 as well: I needed the "unlimited" record time for filming lectures etc.
I guess with the update the value of this combination is yet increased.
I saw their was a hack for unlimited recording on g9.

A GH5 or a G9 and you called the G9 a great all around camera. That says something to me. Thanks for the heads up on 2 great cameras. Waiting for more videos from my favourite caped crusaders....
I thought about it, but the lack of syncroscan as well as the inability to easily switch between PAL and NTSC makes the GH5 a keeper for me!

Yes did you send them a letter? (to Panasonic) I hope they change the AF system to PDAF in GH6 whenever that comes out.
Any change in VFR bitrate? And VFR are now fully manual?

Recommend you guys review the new Sigma EFM 16mm prime lens. They might have saved the Canon mirrorless product line.

You tested the AFC-tracking under low light condition w a bright lit area in the background. Can you do the walking test under daylight just to see whether the tracking works better w the new FW, w/o the background interference? TIA
Jordan re which other firmware upgrade to review... How about recent upgrade to Nikon D500. Have they addressed the issue of blown highlights?
if I get the g9 + Lumix 25mm f1.7, which other lens would you recommend me to compliment it for videos? Would the 42.5mm would be a good idea then? I would prefer to take advantage of the dual IS (on a budget lens if possible ahah)

G9 + external recorder + Vlog-L: not only 4:2:2 but 2x the frames gotta be beautiful, way better color/HDR and straight to Prores up to ~2000Mbps
I don't really like 24p and 30p, but I'm curious:
- 6k open gate 3:2 200mbps
- 4k 10bit 4:2:2
- 4k 8bit 4:2:0 60fps
I still think I'm going to shoot 60fps, even without an external recorder

Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III and G5 X Mark II now have that C-AF fix (Mode 2) and 24p FW addition coming right up...

It's identical, except for the things Jordan mentioned. The GH5 does have a few advantages: 400 mbps 4K All-I; no record limit, shutter angle, and compatibility with the XLR-1 adapter. But, for the most part, they will look exactly the same.
Did Panasonic boost up the 1080p bitrate in addition to the other changes to 4k? at 2:45 it seems to appear so at 100mbs in FHD 60p!
does the colors match identically with vlog-l 10bit422 on both g9 and gh5?
any re-visit of olympus em1 mk2 with ver 3.0? thanks
With current debate is under 1000€ final price the G9.. my dream m4/3 camera, and the only one with decent grip and top lcd also!

Hey guys, what high bit rate options does Panasonic include in the G9? In pretty much every press release it only talks about 10 bit 422 in 4K, and seemingly no improvements in 1080p!
In the video at 2:46 you can see there is 1080 60p with 100mbit. So there should be improvements in 1080 too.

Jordan, you need to review the Sigma FP...built up. Use the Hoodman EVF add-on, and some L lenses. No IBIS, and the AF sucks, but a firmware update may help it. Please do a review of this camera. Everyone is talking about it. I hear that in Japan, the japanese are buying them up like crazy and building up their rigs with all the accessories, which will increase as the camera gains more popularity. I would also like a review on its photo-taking capabilities. Smallest full frame camera.
Does the g9 have a recording limit when shooting video in 1080p?
As of 2021 the gh5 is cheaper in my country so I just bought that. However will definitely consider picking up the G9 down the track when it's cheaper as a companion / 2nd camera to the gh5.
Did the G9 get the focus transition feature?
I have Sony A9 and was planning to sell G9 ... after using A9 for video I am thinking of keeping G9. I love A9 for still bird photo, but not for video. Poor EVF, video color, and believe it or not focusing while in video mode. With G9 upgrade I am strongly thinking of keeping G9

Sleeper camera of 2019. So underrated.
Tbh, the only thing makes it worth it is IBIS. Otherwise you can just get a pocket 4k and get real deal. But the IBIS makes a good difference. Not sure how well it works with Canon lenses tough.
What about near/far AF feature?
Is the slow motion in variable frame rate identical quality at 120fps and 180fps on the G9 and GH5?

Does the G9 offer 1080p 120fps at a decent bit rate? How is the quality? Would this be a good choice for real estate videos shot at 120fps for smoother footage in post?

is autofocus in continuous mode/video better than fujifilm xt2? I'm using xt2 paired with xf18-55mm, and the autofocus is little bit hunting when recording my daughter dancing.
With the same version of the imaging processor and actual image sensor, I'm somewhat disappointed that the GH5 didn't also get Animal Detect. If it's a R&D recoup, I'd be willing to purchase an upgrade code, similar as to what was required for V-LOG L.

Now that the firmware is out, could Jordan review the 10 bit and HLG footage from both the G9 and GH5 to compare them? The HLG footage from the G9 is only 72mbps where the GH5 is 400mbps. I'm interested to see the differences.

Yes, the auto focusing on the G9 isn't Canon/Sony like, but it does work and all the other features... WOW. My "old" G9 is getting a nice make over!
"work" ...well it sucks and is unreliable so if you call that "works" then good for you
AF looks absolutely unusable in video. It's a wobbling, jittery mess.

What about anamorphic lens mode?
On the G9, if you use an external monitor+recorder (Atmos Inferno) do you lose the auto-focus ability then? I heard Sony A7III does that.
With the A7iii you don't loose autofocus, only face-detection and only if you use HDMI AND internal recording at the same time. If you use an external recorder (Ninja V, etc) and disable internal recording you get all AF, including face-detection. Same with a6400.
Kinda made me regret a little getting the G95 instead of paying more for the GO.
