I think the most important take from the video was the amount of wildlife they were able to photograph. No setting up heavy tripods and being fully mobile shooting handheld is a HUGE HUGE factor here! Also the fact the camera was able to handle the crappy weather conditions is also to be commended. To those that were unimpressed with the ISO 3200 noise - well that's normal with a smaller sensor but I can assure you that running it through Topaz labs AI Clear would get that noiseless and detailed.
Came here for the camera. Two minutes in, and I didn't care about the camera at all, just wanted to watch more of these guys taking picks of wildlife and explaining the process. Loved it.

Some yes, some no. At ISO3200, because of the crop factor, noise is still pretty significant - and those that are willing to invest in de-noising AI will be fine. Otherwise, heavy DSLRs with slower software and speed might cause you to lose your shot as the animal sprints away. There are pros and cons to the G9 vs the DSLRs, and it's up to the professionals to decide what tradeoffs they are going to make.
I love these comments about how horrible the photos are. If the same people were told that they were coming from a Canon body, they'd likely praise the photos.
Canon bodies have larger sensors, so there should be less noise with all else being equal. I'm a Micro Four Thirds shooter, but even I have to acknowledge that I run into the noise problem entirely too often.
Great shot of the Bald Eagle! Learned plenty about Yellowstone too! I've had my G9 for a year plus the 100-400mm Leica zoom lens which I use for wildlife (mostly birds) and sports of my children all hand held.
A misconception you have to travel to these beautiful places all over the world - says the guy in Yellowstone. Alright, let me head back to the Target parking lot and see what I can do with these seagulls; maybe a squirrel in my backyard.

I have the G9 with 100-400mm Panasonic-Leica and the Panasonic 100-300mm. Light weight camera allows easier carrying and often no need for a tripod. I have a few other micro4/3rds lenses. I will likely buy full-frame as another tool. The ease of use of the G9, however, makes it very convenient and relatively portable.
@@tienzomby93 I owned both lenses. The 100-300mm is lightweight and a good lens. The 100-400mm in burst mode number one on a Lumix G9 will get you a suitable keeper rate even for birds in flight and with some crop. If you want enlargements, you have low light, and a moving target, I'd go larger sensors, in general. You can still carry the 100-400mm and you have that extra reach over the 100-300.

The additional reach of the 100-400mm an becomes important consideration for wildlife since you can still get an image that fills the frame at a great distance. I post most of my photos on social media. Image quality is good enough with either lens. 100-300mm is good for some users; cheaper and lighter, smaller. But the 100-400mm can get some very good images with good lighting at a great distance.
I would prefer to be given the focal length rather than the "equivalent" focal length. Why compare to an ancient legacy technology? MFT is the future. Let the Luddite full frame people figure out how their dinosaur equipment focal lengths compare with the newer MFT focal lengths. I just don't care how things used to be. Was this video made primarily with full frame photographers in mind?
Very informative and interesting presentation. Yellowstone is a wonderful National Park to photograph wildlife. It's just so big, you need many days or many trips to get the photos you want. Thank you very much for your information. I've shot both the large format Nikons, with big lenses, as well as the Lumix GH5 and the G9 with an assortment of lenses. I found the 100-400 dificult to hold steady and get sharp photos at the full 800mm length. However; that may be just me. For the most part, the lenses performs wonderfully, even in the wet weather. You have again inspired me to go back to our Nation's, 1st National Park. I have a strong idea what T.R. saw in Yellowstone the 1st time he visited. I am much more comfortable to shoot with a G9, rather than a rifle! What shutter speeds (for the most part) where you shooting at, Auto ISO?

As a nature shooter myself I found that what he said is not only true but something you will come to realize on your own after many years of shooting. Excellent video even when it's designed to sell cameras. I would buy the G9 if it had no video rec limits and GH5 style video codec options.
If the low light performance were better, I'd trade my D500 for the G9. I'd really like the super slow motion video. But given that horrible noise at ISO 3200, the G9 would have limited uses. Too much $$ for me to own both.
I've been using MFT cameras for a while now, and I think to say that it "would have limited uses" - That's an overstatement. Using the 6 stop image stabilization mft cameras has, you'd barely have to reach for these levels of ISO. The problem is when you encounter movement in low light conditions. Also, I've had the chance to shoot at 3200 ISO, using that camera, and I believe that the noise in these pictures comes mostly from mishandling these pictures in post process.
I would stick to your D500 if I was you. I traded in all my MFT Panasonic/Olympus gear and gone back to my Nikon D7500 (which has the same sensor as the D500). It has way better low light/high ISO and AF performance than my G80.
Olympus 14-150 is a cheap decent quality lense. The 12-100 Pro is a superior but vastly more expensive option. Keep in mind that with the 2x ‘crop factor’ the equivalent FoV is 28-300 and 24-200 compared to FF. I assume the d5300 is an APS-C camera so equivalent FoV of your 18-200 would be around 24-300.

Great video. Nice camera. I have an Olympus M1.1 and M5.2 so I am into micro four thirds now. But I previously had a 7D Mark II and an 80D. And I miss the stills sports burst continuous autofocus of the 7D Mark II and the video continuous autofocus of the 80D. I would love a micro four thirds camera that matched those two abilities and had 120fps 1080p. Like a mini Canon 1Dx Mark II with in-body image stabilization. This camera seems to come pretty close.
Why are so many reviewers, Vloggers etc. fixated on mirrorless cameras and our need to move over to this technology? Yesterday I visited the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition in London featuring the best 100 images from around the world - some stunning photos. I noticed that only 6 of the images on display were taken on mirrorless cameras of which five were Sony and there was only one micro-four thirds example. Predominantly the photos were taken on a variety of Nikon and Canon DSLRs. I didn’t count but felt that, certainly as far as the Nikon users were concerned, 60% at least were taken on full-frame cameras, the rest being crop-frame format and a few medium format. I am not familiar with the Canon range to know which are full-frame and which are crop-factor. Would any of these winning or highly commended photographers have got any better results if they had been using mirrorless technology? I suspect not.
It's a damn shame Panasonic refuses to profile Olympus lenses for DFD (or Olympus refuses to give them the data necessary to do so). I love my Olympus glass and my OM-D E-M1, but Panasonic shoots much better video...even better than the E-M1 Mark II.
I love my G9, it is a really good camera except the autofocus in video. I wonder what the firmware update can do to improve this. Glad that I learned manual focus because I had to though.
I am a subscriber and love his videos. G9 is better than the older line ups, however it is still not perfect. It still would hunt focus especially when you are in low light and need to use faster aperture. The lens he used in the testing is wider so I think it can look good. take a look at this video by Richard: ua-cam.com/video/q7oNPIFQxI4/v-deo.html The result is really not optimal in my opinion. Although you can argue the pana leica 25 1.4 is an older lens. And in fact that particular lens is not the fastest focusing lens even in stills shooting. See it yourself and see if it is good enough for you. There are indeed ways to avoid the hunt like manual focusing and using a wider lens but some people might hate this trouble.
Buying On a Budget I did a firmware update recent on mine. I have noticed there isn't too much on UA-cam for the G9 as far as videos that people, like myself, would like to know. I wouldn't mind doing some UA-cam videos answering questions etc people have. Let me know if you think I should and give a suggestion :)
Nice video but while you were clearly using the G9 Jake didn't actually say if he like the camera or not and what he did and didn't like in general. It would have been good to hear more on his opinions even if they were all good and comparing it to what he has shot with in the past. I am super surprised at the noise present at only 3200 iso. I see below that there was a lot of cropping but I am guessing when you processed the images that you didn't add any noise reduction. I know my G7 can get cleaner looking images at higher iso than 3200 when processed right. One other thing that would have been good to know is which lenses you were using in each image and if there was a teleconverter attached.This would be good to know what a lense is capable of taking.
Those 3200 iso shots looked crazy noisy, I know it was snowing which will not have helped but the lack of colour or contrast really made it look like the camera was at the upper limit of what the sensor can do. There is another shot at 3200 later on which is not in the snow, this looks better but still a lot of fine gain given we are viewing at 100%. Great video though and some really beautiful photography Jake.
I would say ISO 6400 if exposed correctly is the absolute upper limit of my G80 so the G9 should handle 3200 I think. Guess it depends on the situation. I would guess the 100-400 was used which only has an f6.3 aperture at the long end. The 200 2.8 would have given much cleaner results albeit for a price premium
i agree, i have been contemplating getting a 60-600 sigma lens for my sony a9 which looks like a great combo and on my a9 i can push iso easily to 6400, then i started to wonder if it would be better to get a g9 with a 100-400mm lens for portability but it looks as though you cant push the iso past 2000 on the g9 so that would be annoying! If they made a g9s with pdaf, that might just be a full frame killer for wildlife photography
@@theinfinate Personally I think the absolute limit is 6400 but 3200 is a realistic max or take a look at the Olympus EM1X Gordon Laings review is very good and the ISO difference between it and the A9 didnt look so much on his video
I think so too, although I guess it is down to each user to determine what level of noise they are willing to tolerate. I sold all my MFT gear and went back to shooting with my Nikon gear (a D7500 plus Sigma 150-600mm) which gives me a great combo and equiv focal length of 225mm - 900mm! The images are defo cleaner at higher ISO settings such as 3200.
Interesting video and nice to watch. But please...why put equivalent focal lengths in there...there’s is no actual point. It’s a video about the G9. Not about the G9 compared to something else, right ? Just put in the actual focal length.
A more descriptive term for the same thing is the "Contiguous United States". Poor Alaska and Hawaii are always being left out because you have to leave the country to get there.
In all fairness the light was very low contrast (overcast) and it was raining/snowing in alot of them. The sunny daylight shots are alot crisper. It's a good system but (admittedly) has its compromises.
Oh my ... the Coyote images are noisy as hell. It’s like I’m shooting on my Canon 6D Mark II on ISO 40.000! I don’t hesitate shooting at ISO 12.800. But the ISO 3200 from the G9 is kinda useless, even in UA-cam quality...
Seriously? Isn't that the only thing that matters when you put the camera into the hands of a professional photographer? "Hey, look at all these specs!" I already know the damn specs. This isn't a Panasonic promo video. Tell me about your professional opinion! As in, do you think the advantage of having small telephoto lenses is enough to make you reconsider hauling full frame glass around? That's an answer people might actually want to know.
FYI, it is Illegal to howl like a wolf in Yellowstone. He also said his best shots are when the animal notices him.....park rules state that if an animal is aware of you then you are too close.
I had to laught at that! Going to Yellowstone would be the trip of a lifetime for me. I'll invite him to my northern industrial town in the north of the UK and see whether he thinks that is 'exotic'!

I am super surprised at the noise present at only 3200 iso. I see below that there was a lot of cropping but I am guessing when you processed the images that you didn't add any noise reduction. I know my G7 can get cleaner looking images at higher iso than 3200 when processed right.
One other thing that would have been good to know is which lenses you were using in each image and if there was a teleconverter attached.This would be good to know what a lense is capable of taking.
Those 3200 iso shots looked crazy noisy, I know it was snowing which will not have helped but the lack of colour or contrast really made it look like the camera was at the upper limit of what the sensor can do. There is another shot at 3200 later on which is not in the snow, this looks better but still a lot of fine gain given we are viewing at 100%.

Personally ,I think the image of g9 has too much noise when ISO is 3200
I would say ISO 6400 if exposed correctly is the absolute upper limit of my G80 so the G9 should handle 3200 I think. Guess it depends on the situation. I would guess the 100-400 was used which only has an f6.3 aperture at the long end. The 200 2.8 would have given much cleaner results albeit for a price premium
i agree, i have been contemplating getting a 60-600 sigma lens for my sony a9 which looks like a great combo and on my a9 i can push iso easily to 6400, then i started to wonder if it would be better to get a g9 with a 100-400mm lens for portability but it looks as though you cant push the iso past 2000 on the g9 so that would be annoying! If they made a g9s with pdaf, that might just be a full frame killer for wildlife photography
@@theinfinate Personally I think the absolute limit is 6400 but 3200 is a realistic max or take a look at the Olympus EM1X Gordon Laings review is very good and the ISO difference between it and the A9 didnt look so much on his video
I think so too, although I guess it is down to each user to determine what level of noise they are willing to tolerate. I sold all my MFT gear and went back to shooting with my Nikon gear (a D7500 plus Sigma 150-600mm) which gives me a great combo and equiv focal length of 225mm - 900mm! The images are defo cleaner at higher ISO settings such as 3200.

Interesting video and nice to watch. But please...why put equivalent focal lengths in there...there’s is no actual point. It’s a video about the G9. Not about the G9 compared to something else, right ? Just put in the actual focal length.

I never really get when people say the lower 48, because the upper two States are Alaska and Minnesota.
It refers to the 48 states below Alaska (which includes Minnesota). The term was coined after Alaska became the 49th state of the Union.

A more descriptive term for the same thing is the "Contiguous United States". Poor Alaska and Hawaii are always being left out because you have to leave the country to get there.

ISO 3200 looks pretty horrible on m43. 😒
In all fairness the light was very low contrast (overcast) and it was raining/snowing in alot of them. The sunny daylight shots are alot crisper. It's a good system but (admittedly) has its compromises.
There is a 50+ m thick layer of drizzle and snow falling in between the camera and the subject. That is what made that "noise".

It would be nice if they paid attention to the white balance. Orange people and blue snow scenes is very distracting.

Most of what you see as noise is actually snow.
It might sound dumb, but I really enjoyed the cameras from yesteryear, could you guys do something like that
Oh my ... the Coyote images are noisy as hell. It’s like I’m shooting on my Canon 6D Mark II on ISO 40.000! I don’t hesitate shooting at ISO 12.800. But the ISO 3200 from the G9 is kinda useless, even in UA-cam quality...

Seriously? Isn't that the only thing that matters when you put the camera into the hands of a professional photographer? "Hey, look at all these specs!" I already know the damn specs. This isn't a Panasonic promo video. Tell me about your professional opinion! As in, do you think the advantage of having small telephoto lenses is enough to make you reconsider hauling full frame glass around? That's an answer people might actually want to know.

FYI, it is Illegal to howl like a wolf in Yellowstone. He also said his best shots are when the animal notices him.....park rules state that if an animal is aware of you then you are too close.

I had to laught at that! Going to Yellowstone would be the trip of a lifetime for me. I'll invite him to my northern industrial town in the north of the UK and see whether he thinks that is 'exotic'!
