I’ve been playing bass for almost two years without knowing any music theory. After watching this tutorial, I felt the excitement that I felt back when I first picked up the instrument. Finally, theory is starting to CLICK! Can’t wait to binge-watch the rest of these beginner videos. You, sir, are an excellent teacher! Patient and clear.
Hello Mr B, your genius is not knowing the theory but in your ability to make it blindingly obvious what the students need to do 😁 Really cool mate and I'm thumbing through your other vids 👍
I've been playing guitar for about seven years and just recently started playing bass. I'm taking lessons with my guitar teacher and he encourages me to check out tutorials on UA-cam. Most I found the person giving the lesson or advice goes waaaay too fast. I like the way you slow things down and make it easier to understand how to move around the fret board. I understand the pentatonic scale with guitar and through your tutorial I see how easy and effective it is for bass. Thanks for a great video and God Bless.
Mr. Brown, your elocution goes beyond words, tone and style to include how you seamlessly integrated the physical movements of your hand and bass to deliver an outstanding presentation. Seriously.
@@richbrownbass it would be advisable to teach on how to hold the bass, how to place the thumb behind the fretboard, and how to practice scales and chords. 😬🙋🏿♂️. Scales and chords with pdf files will help us also. 👈🏿👌🏿

Hi Rich. I'm not a beginner myself (I've been playing for over 50 years), but I watch as many bass videos as I can. What I wanted to say, is that you have a superb style of teaching mate. I see many teaching videos where I think that beginners would have trouble following, but yours are logical, patient and interesting. Nice one!
Your "rant" was not a rant at all, but a beautifully stated explanation. As for the lesson, I loved it! I am truly a beginner with experience. I taught myself guitar in junior high school. I played tenor sax in high school band. I picked up a base in a church years ago because they did not have a base player. Again, self taught, off of what I knew from other stuff. Funny story. The associate pastor (sound board guy) handed me a tape to listen to. He hit play. After two or three measures, I told him to stop it. "I get it." He smiled. Talk about the busiest bass in the west! I slowed it down immediately. Amazing how simply hearing your BEGINNER self for a second or two is more than enough. LOL I am taking the time now to really learn it all from scratch. The ideas of music theory are not over my head, but I never understood how to really "work" with any of it. I love the way you teach.
As someone who's been playing for years and years these type of videos are really amazing to refresh the memory, sometimes the most simple stuff can be the most complicated to master (feel and etc.), anyways much appreciated! =)
I played on a church worship team for about 10 years. Stopped playing for about 20 years. Just getting back into playing again. Love the scales lessons. Lots of stuff here I never learned the first time through. Very grateful for the lessons. Currently jamming on a fretless 6 string
Thank you so very much. Like someone commented earlier: I felt as if a friend sat down with me and showed me how to do it... as well as explained what is that I AM DOING. Wo-hooo! Rich, I feel inspired.
Self taught with a bit of knowledge but stuck ?well these patterns take you up another step ,showing that 1 finger per fret in exercise is great, alternative ways of playing scales is also vital and this is a real learning process not only for beginners but self taught guys like myself who missed a few steps while learning .guys like you and J.Stinnet give you great fundamentals while moving over fretboard.❤❤
Rich, as a beginner I've watch many video's and they just confused what little gray matter I have left in my 71 year old brain. After watching this video I have to say - EXCELLENT! - I understood everything. I especially like that you say the dot or fret number and note. I'll be back for more. Thank you very much. -Vince-
You have absolutely NO clue how much this video brought peace to me. I was about to stop practicing because these other videos are not THIS comprehensive and they don’t have the grace to teach that you have. I am so grateful to God for you. New subbie for life!
Thanks Rich. have always been a 'by-ear' player. felt I was being lazy but then found theory off-putting. You manage to bridge both in a way that I get! Thanks (from the UK).
Loving your lessons Mr Brown ive just bought a bass and amp last week then i found your site perfect timing, sorry to hear about scammers trying to steal your identify hope you get it resolved all the best and thanks for your lessons your a good methodical teacher, peace from aja64 from Glasgow, Scotland, UK
I've been playing too dang long to be considered a beginner, but I got a lot out of this anyway. I learned a new way to use pentatonic scales horizontally, and finally saw someone else hit the 12th fret of the low E with the ring finger instead of the pinky (my pinky is REALLY short). Thank you, Rich!
i'm in an very similar situation. so grateful to have learned the basics of music theory on a piano, it makes visualizing everything so much easier on bass! but the application of theory differs greatly between the two instruments, it's really fascinating.
Hey Rich, Thank you for addressing that phishing scam. It's a shame that people waste their creative energies on such things. Thank you also for an illuminating lesson on pentatonic scales. It is always good to go back to the basics. You are never too advanced to neglect the ABCs. For my part, it's where I live. Peace and love.
Great basic lesson. Picked up the bass in high school…then went overseas , college, kids, career and finally picked it up again at 50. Playing for two years now and love it. Just found you channel and gonna dive into some of you lessons. You seem to be a great teacher, very clear and concise. Thanks!
Hey Rich! So glad to have found your channel. Great to see an accomplished bass player laying out lessons with neither meaningless chatter nor unpleasant bass tone. You have a great delivery and you hit the foundational points that so many miss. Excellent work.
Thank you, Rich for this informative lesson. I'm an old boomer who is trying to pick up what I abandoned 40 years ago. I found the lesson easy to follow. I look forward to climbing the neck of my short-scale using this.

Rich. I am a beginner/aspiring bass player. I watch a lot of instructional videos on UA-cam; have been watching for a couple of years, and I feel compelled to leave a comment (I have only ever left one comment on UA-cam) to tell you that your style of teaching is outstanding. I love the pace, I love the very patient and understanding delivery style. I really like the content. You never include too much or too little. Fantastic job. You were born for this. Rick P.
What a beautiful compliment. Thank you so very much, Rick. This is the kind of sentiment that keeps me going with this channel. I truly appreciate it.
What a great lesson Rich! You're a fantastic teacher!
I just bought a bass and this sooooo helpful, thank you!!!!
This is my first lesson from you and I think it was great. I just got my bass today. I haven't played in 52 years. I understood the lesson perfectly. I hope my hands can rise to the challenge.
Thanks so much! Been playing a couple years and this is one of the best lessons I've seen yet. You're a great communicator.
