I remember that show well and yeah, your vocals totally made that 1st song, She's Gone, Bobby. I knew even then that Clapton was the only Brit in the band yet they had that great big Union Jack themed backdrop up there front and center like ya'll were from England. Still, he introduced you guys as, "The finest musical group in the world" and I'm like wow, a country guy says that and it so it turned out Johnny was a little cooler than I thought. Shoulda caught a clue when he wrote the inscription on Dylan's Nashville Skyline album, but... Tell you what though, that country crowd gave you guys a huge, screaming applause that kinda caught even Johnny by surprise.
Bobby, your Performance on the Johnny Cash Show was Spectacular, Singing and The Keyboards, Just Stood out on this song, Hands Down Brother, you stole the show , Cousin Figel
I loved hearing this story. I had the Johnny Cash Show DVD as a kid and I always wondered who that guy with the powerful, soulful voice was. Now I know, it’s Bobby. Love from New Zealand.
Seeing the Johnny Cash performance on UA-cam a few years ago is what made me a Bobby Whitlock fan. His energy (fire) and voice blew me away. And I love how his voice blends with Eric's.
I say you guys on Johnny Cash and you were on fire. I was 12 years old and I still remember to this day. Man oh man.... Thanks for starting that fire Bobby!!! And Coco for remembering!!!!
Just watched "It's Too Late" Johnny Cash clip. Really great to see Bobby singing with Eric. It's just like you said Bobby! You watched Eric like a hawk to add your part! dyanamite! Johnny Cash always added some eclectic acts to his show.
Bobby's piano and his harmonies & 'answers' on the choruses to "She's Gone" are what makes the song soar in my humble opinion. So cool that he went all out and reproduced them in the live performance on Johnny Cash's show. Btw, the slide solo on the studio version of that song is the first slide piece I ever learned. (Thanks Duane, rest peacefully) Thanks for sharing all these wonderful memories and stories ya'll!
Spectacular Moments! I saw it live on Johnny Cash Show when I was 17 years old. Seen it many times on UA-cam. Great to know the details behind the historic event! Glad your family was there! Great musical history, indeed! Mike Barber Columbia, South Carolina
I think that one of the secrets of D&D was that the music was heard on the record player, no idols, no hero, just fantastic music. I’m one of a few that had the album from day one. How could anyone listen to that album without feeling that they had just experienced something ultra special? The first few bars of Layla still make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. And, I’m over seventy years old and must have bought six or seven copies in various formats.
I got to see them after getting hooked on that album just like you. The show opened with Clapton walking up front to the mic and hitting those first notes of Layla. Man, talk about the hair on the back of my neck standing up. Duane Allman was with them that night. They finished with a long, glorious Let It Rain. As Bobby said, that was the best rock and roll band in the world. We sure were lucky to have been there.
Totally agree. My buddy Mark had the album when it first came out, we had just listened to it, sitting on front porch, Mike from down the street came walking by and borrowed it. Few hours later he brought it back, with a big grin, he said "that's dying and going to heaven music"
I got it when it was released at a little discount store in Logan WV. I was 13 or 14 and it blew my young mind. I still remember the Cash Show appearance. Amazing musicians at the top of their game.
Love it that the audio recordings of the Johnny Cash show material are available, and I do love it that there's video of It's Too Late...great stuff! ❤️
I knew Layla back in the late 70s and that was it... Got the live double early 90s then the 25th anniversary box set... And I still didn't really know how much of a driving influence you were on that album. But seeing the Johnny cash show about 10 years ago on replay I was knocked back by your performance on that show and learned. Watching this and hearing your stories is gold!
Hello again! I've been listening to an online source for the entire Johnny Cash Show set, much of which appears on some of the subsequent "Layla" box sets. A couple of question have arisen, and I was hoping that writing might clear them up. "It's Too Late" was recorded as it seemed a plausible track to get the band on the Cash show as a semi country act. But on the "Layla" 40th anniversary box, as well as a bootleg of the set which included THREE takes of "Matchbox," the unaired portion of the show features "Got to Get Better in a Little While" and "Blues Power." I was wondering if those last two tracks were played for the country audience or if they'd kept rolling when the rock crowd came in and that's when they were recorded and then for the box version they edited them together. If it WAS for the country audience, how were those songs selected, as neither were on the original album? (The bootleg, incidentally, includes the Cash "Who's on speed" question, and then someone says something off mic to which he replies, "Not at this particular time." I was also curious, as I'm referencing a bootleg source, what Bobby's opinion on bootlegs may be. I know George Harrison was very anti-bootleg. What George maybe hadn't considered is that only the truest, hardcore fans go after bootlegs. For instance, I had EVERYTHING The Beatles had produced before even looking at bootleg CD's. John Lennon I think understood that, and actually collected them himself. I believe Bobby has referenced having some audio of shows with the Dominos, so I'm thinking he may not have much of an issue with it. It's far different than a counterfeit album, where some makes a copy of "Exile on Main Street" in their basement and passes it off as a legitimate copy...now that's taking money away from the artists, and I do have an issue with that. In any event, that's what I have. Best wishes to you both.
That was an awesome performance you gave on the Johnny Cash show all those years ago! Your voice is still so strong and you and Coco make beautiful music together, both vocal and instrumental! You both are definitely God’s Masterpieces! Sending you much love and positivity!❤️🙏🏻🕊
After hearing this story I had to go back and watch it... I was watching it early last year cuz GeTtv was running Johnny's old shows, and tho I watched Johnny's show back in the day I was only 8 so I didn't know you guys then😀 it's cool hearing him introduce you by name... 🙂
Found the performance on the Johnny Cash show. Sounds fantastic! Your name announced first in the intro (thanks to your speaking up about origins). Your granny and other family must have been bursting with pride!
That Johnny Cash gig was phenomenal. “It’s too late she’s gone” (don’t recall the actual track title) was just so laid back, so tight, just beautiful music , played with class.
Too late shes gone on Johnny Cash show is all you Bobby....that's an awesome version of that song. Got any stories on Tell the truth?...I Love that song.
The Johnny cash show with you and the rest of the band is just absolutely brilliant, I watch it regularly. Shame they didn’t film the other two songs . Thank you Bobby and Coco
Bobby, another Great story here, thanks man, i watched this show live, i am glad that John had you on this tv show, of course the song you played was a country sound, John Cash knew good music when he heard it, hands down, damn History here, Cousin Figel
You got a good memory Bobby. The late 60's and 70's are pretty fuzzy for me, lol. Love your stories, they put us right there with you. Coco you do a good job interviewing! Great story about Johnny, I'll have to go back and watch, thanks
Bobby Brother, Love the stories. Love the way you present them. Like you're hanging out in my living room shooting the $h!t. Keep the stories and music coming.
Thanks for these great interviews. The Derek and the Domino's album was one of the most influential albums for me as a guitar player. And the rawness of it was so over the top, unlike anything being produced at that time. Bobby, your contribution was so instrumental- and who can forget Thorn Tree in the Garden? Thanks again.
That Tulsa, Memphis sound had never been heard live before that show. I lived in Guildford just up the road from Erics house. The music scene around the area was great, but never that wonderful Tulsa sound which I recall so well from the track “Living on Tulsa Time”. You brought so much musical education to the masses.
I love this. I remember seeing this show. It was rare then that we had opportunities to see the bands we heard on radio and whose records we had perform live on television. Some of the "variety" shows gave us that chance (The Youngbloods on the Milton Berle Show; Sly and the Family Stone on the Dinah Shore Show; The Cowsills on Mike Douglas; David Peale and the Lower East Side on Dick Cavett etc.). I read today that Sylvain Sylvain passed away. It surprised me that he had survived the seventies. I'm so glad that you did, Bobby. And I'm so glad that you're willing and able to relate and record your oral history. Thank you for this.
I watched that Cash TV show back when it was first broadcast and YOU GUYS , DEREK &THE DOMINOES , TO THIS DAY IS THE BEST LIVE MUSIC APPEARANCE I HAVE EVER SEEN ON TV! Just fantastic, all the songs were incredible THANK YOU.
It hit me that I was probably watching the Johnny Cash show that night, but would have had no idea who anyone in the band was. But I did know about Johnny and Carl Perkins. My dad was a huge Johnny Cash fan and we always watched his show. I was 10 at the time, and had been a huge music fan ever since The Beatles were on Ed Sullivan (I had four much older siblings who were music fans, two were musicians), but at that age still listened to AM-oriented stuff for the most part. And to stray off like Bobby is wont in his stories :) , I have a very clear memory of listening to Layla just a few months later (I watched the video from Johnny, it says it was Jan 1971). My best friend and I and two of my sisters were painting my bedroom, maybe early that June. It was a beautiful, late spring day, we had all the windows open and were jamming to the radio the whole time. Layla was one of my favorites at the time, and I'm pretty sure we heard it more than once that afternoon. The really funny thing is, there's only one other song I remember hearing that day while we were painting - 'Never Ending Song Of Love'. And I certainly would have had no idea back then there was any connection between the bands that did those two songs. And as an 'end note', I'm hoping to get another band going before too long, and we will definitely be playing 'I Looked Away'. Been wanting to do that one for a while.
It brings me happiness to read the comments. I''m such a fan of this esoteric world, and hearing all of the people who love Clapton's Derick & the Dominoes, Bonnie & Delaney and Friends, etc.
Another Great story,Thanks for sharing. Love the appearance on the Johnny Cash Show, glad you enjoyed and that your family was there. I use to go to your mom's estate sales :)
Bobby I saw Derek and the Dominos in 1970 when you played in Maryland at Ownings Mill. I was 15 years old and thought it was the best concert I ever saw.
I alwayssss wondered if Eric knew Bobby was coming on like that for that show.. it was actually one of the best 2nd harmonies ever. Great live appearance
YEAH!!! That is the truth, the beauty of a bandmate who jumps in on harmony singing, heck yeah, light a fire under the guitar players ass, kick it up a notch. Beautiful.
I have no idea how I missed this story and what a story it was! Wow, Bobby I had no idea that the show was taped at the Ryman, Cool! Cracked me up with the interruption of Johnny after he introduced Eric-ha ha! Good for you, got EVERYBODY introduced after that-ha ha. Then later on at the airport--meet Bobby Whitlock son-excellent. That is SO funny. So another first today was I had no idea that you guys did Blues Power on the show too (such a shame it wasn't filmed) and I heard THAT for the first time-wow, as CoCo mentioned your voices together were such a powerful thing! And you made sure Eric was "on it" on that one, superb harmony vocals! Radle and Gordon were SO tight on that too! Keep on Keepin' on indeed! So Johnny actually said "who's on speed?" Ha ha...sounds like it was quite the party. Oh, you were talking about harmony vocals, did you ever play or record with Sam & Dave? Love their two part harmonies! Thanks for all of the incredible stories!
Hi Bobby and Coco! I found your She's Gone on the Johnny Cash show recently. Cannot get enough of it! Kept wondering why do I absolutely love this. You are so right---you got it PERFECT! And yes, your connecting so closely to harmonize with Eric is how it works! I had been thinking every time I listened that getting the vocal that beautifully synchronized must have taken some long rehearsals---but it was just that "fire" you lit for that performance. Wow. Thank you. And thank you for this wonderful chance to get your thoughts. ❤️
Bobby, you are one of only a handful of folks whose vocals make the hairs on the back of my neck stand right up. Heard that Layla album a hundred times. Bet it will do the same after another hundred. Thank you
One of life’s pleasures this awful COVID19 year is listening to your stories and CoCo asking all the right questions too. You’re a great team. Derek & the Dominos is what made me a Bobby Whitlock fan. I had all the solo albums on vinyl, still have the first and Raw Velvet as records and all the rest on CD, mostly from Japan because they have those treasured little obi strips. I the first two collected on CD too. You’re an amazing player but what has always gotten me was your voice. Wow, it’s a natural wonder. I don’t remember the first time I saw the Johnny Cash video but it was a very long time ago. It was electrifying that this long haired young man, who looked more like a teenage waif could sing like that. To me, you stole the show, and everyone on stage that night was either a legend or just the best players.
God bless you Mr. Whitlock. You are an amazing American musical treasure ! Your music in all its forms has helped me through a lot of tough times. You're the best !
Wow, what a coincidance! I just finished watching that video of the Johnny Cash Show, and yes, you did light a fire!! I still haven't caught up on all of the older videos from you and CoCo yet. Timely indeed! Thank you both for this excellent series! When are you going to turn the camera around and interview CoCo?? I'm sure everyone would enjoy that immensely!
Man all of these videos that i saw until now from You Bobby and Co Co Carmel are such a great inspiration and has so much positive energy. I really like to buy your Bio,but i only found it as a E - Book.Maybe i have to get into that E Book thing. But a book is still a book.However. I love to read Bios cause it allows the Artist to speak his mind and put a light on different things. However the last Bio i was reading was Joe Perrys Bio in and out of Aerosmith, and before that Pete Towshend Bio and as well Eric Bio and not to forgot Keith Richards Bio and so on. I really think it would be a nice idea,if somebody would do a Derek and the Dominos Photobook,in combination with the lyrics of the songs plus some of your memories about the sessions and this that. I remember that i was reading 30 years ago that the record company was selling Badges with the Writin Derek is Eric because many people had no idea about the name of the band. However i also was readin somewhere that Eric had enough from all that Supergroup Circus that was around him and Cream and Blind Faith that he decided that the next group he was playin in,should get more reputation for the playin and not because he was in.I don't know if this is a true story, but somehow it make some sense. Some how this make me think about the 4.Led Zeppelin Album. After the 3 Zep Album was under the hammer,Jimmy Page wanted to get out the 4th Album without a name only with four symbols etc. because of the mediapropaganda etc. Anyway. Those where the days. Good to be here and good to be alive Have a nice day and night everybody with the best of everything. ✌☮🧙♂️☮✌ PEACE✌ LOVE🧡💙 AND MUSiC🎵
Great, y'all! Great questions, CoCo! Yep Bobby, you sure were the heat under EC in all that. It definitely comes through. With his frame of mind at that time, somewhat insecure at being "The Guy," I don't feel it could have happened without you. Not to mention your soulful singing and musical contributions. But what a delicate role to play. You're knowing that EC is supposed to be the star, and he knows it. Yet he isn't ready. What a "Damned If You Do/Damned If You Don't" position. We're all glad you Damned To Do. :)
I thought I heard Bobby say there is no video from their appearance on the Johnny Cash show at 7:09. Here is the 2 songs It's Too Later and Matchbox. (8) Derek and the Dominos (Clapton) - It's Too Late/Matchbox live - Johnny Cash Show w/ C.Perkins 1/6/71 - UA-cam
Man that great you were right you could see Eric looking outta corner of his eye and everytime you did the 2 part you looked at him but you did need that, your the best.
I remember that show well and yeah, your vocals totally made that 1st song, She's Gone, Bobby. I knew even then that Clapton was the only Brit in the band yet they had that great big Union Jack themed backdrop up there front and center like ya'll were from England. Tell you what though, that country crowd gave you guys a huge, screaming applause that kinda caught even Johnny by surprise.
Bobby's voice in that performance of "It's Too Late" was insane. One hell of a voice.
I always thought Bobby was the most underrated influence on Eric's greatest performances ever, especially as a singer. Love your story telling.
Yes, me too. I thought that Bobby's organ and vocals made that song even greater.
I couldn't agree more
Bobby, your Performance on the Johnny Cash Show was Spectacular, Singing and The Keyboards, Just Stood out on this song, Hands Down Brother, you stole the show , Cousin Figel
Listening to these stories are magical and absolutely priceless. Please never stop telling these! ♥️
I loved hearing this story. I had the Johnny Cash Show DVD as a kid and I always wondered who that guy with the powerful, soulful voice was. Now I know, it’s Bobby. Love from New Zealand.
This nationally broadcast show was magic. Nothing like it before or since.
My day isn’t complete without one of your stories Bobby. Please keep them coming.
Well said 👏
I like that!
Seeing the Johnny Cash performance on UA-cam a few years ago is what made me a Bobby Whitlock fan. His energy (fire) and voice blew me away. And I love how his voice blends with Eric's.

The performance on the Johnny Cash show was awesome, I remember watching as a kid with my Mom and family.
Bobby you are one gifted storyteller. Like your playing and singing, I could !listen to you all day !!!

I think that one of the secrets of D&D was that the music was heard on the record player, no idols, no hero, just fantastic music. I’m one of a few that had the album from day one. Love it that the audio recordings of the Johnny Cash show material are available, and I do love it that there's video of It's Too Late...great stuff! ❤️
My mom's favorite country artist is Johnny cash, my favorite guitarist and band was Derek Dominos.. so great to see both together :)

One of everything!
One Eric Clapton!
One Bobby Whitlock!
One Jim Gordon!
One Carl Radle!
And one Duane Allman. even if he was a guest , yea one hell of a guest.

Bobby was the driving force behind the performance on The Johnny Cash Show. I remember being astounded when that first aired.
For me the harmony on Johnny Cash sends chills down my spine. Especially the choruses.
Jack Bruce and Bobby Whitlock were the greatest musical partners Eric Clapton ever had. Period.
You're probably right
I've been saying the same thing for years!
Winwood, Alberto Lee, Harrison
I almost agree except for Nathan East
I gotta say his shows with Winwood were pretty incredible, especially the ones in the past 20 years
This is great...I've watched / listened to the Dominos on Johnny Cash dozens of times; love hearing Bobby's memories of that night.
That was an awesome performance you gave on the Johnny Cash show all those years ago! Your voice is still so strong and you and Coco make beautiful music together, both vocal and instrumental! You both are definitely God’s Masterpieces! Sending you much love and positivity!❤️🙏🏻🕊

Thanks again Bobby . Much enjoyed memories of my favorite band .
It's really amazing to see someone so advanced in years (Bobby's just a few years older than me) who is so quick (eager?) to laugh.

Just another great one, you both make my day better to dig the music you speak of. Thank You.
Thank you
Hi Bobby and Coco!
Thank you so much
I posted about your UA-cam channel on my FB timeline too. I would like to see more people sign up.
Love you Bobby Thnx for the memories
I saw that Johnny Cash.show shit now I got to go back and watch it again Bobby your to funny but right to shine. Lol
Seeing the Dominoes on Johnny Cash caused me to go out the next day and buy the "Layla" album. I was a junior in high school.
Awesome 👌
I told my Hs friends about, and they laughed at me, told me I was crazy...
Αbsolutely enjoy these videos and your amazing life stories! 👏
God bless you Mr. Whitlock.
You are an amazing American musical treasure ! Your music in all its forms has helped me through a lot of tough times.
You're the best !
I remember catching that Johnny Cash show and I lived in Millington then and didn't know Bobby was a local guy before he got known
I feel like I was there man you can tell a story and you know it's TRUE I would have loved to see Eric's face.
that was an amazing interview, thanks so much❤️!
Perfect......
Bobby you made it so much better!!
Yee Haw, Brother! You can bet a country boy can survive in the big city- & a country boy will thrive on the big stage-
"What I didn't know then I didn't know until I found out." :)
Dam I wish I could see that first introduction😀🤣😹
Love these stories Bobby
Wow, what a coincidance! I just finished watching that video of the Johnny Cash Show, and yes, you did light a fire!! I still haven't caught up on all of the older videos from you and CoCo yet. Timely indeed! Thank you both for this excellent series! When are you going to turn the camera around and interview CoCo?? I'm sure everyone would enjoy that immensely!
Bobby you are a riot & make peoples lives so much better!
Great stuff keep it coming
Glad your enjoying it
This makes me wish Edison's wife would've interviewed him many times like this-really deep!
Anyway.Those where the days.
Good to be here and good to be alive
Have a nice day and night everybody with the best of everything.
✌☮🧙♂️☮✌
PEACE✌
LOVE🧡💙
AND MUSiC🎵
Great, y'all! Great questions, CoCo! Yep Bobby, you sure were the heat under EC in all that. It definitely comes through. With his frame of mind at that time, somewhat insecure at being "The Guy," I don't feel it could have happened without you. Not to mention your soulful singing and musical contributions. But what a delicate role to play. You're knowing that EC is supposed to be the star, and he knows it. Yet he isn't ready. What a "Damned If You Do/Damned If You Don't" position. We're all glad you Damned To Do. :)
Bobby is what a musician should be like…
GREAT story!
I can't past link above. Find it on UA-cam channel of
Stephen Polly.
He never said that of course
"Blues Power" audio can be found on UA-cam from the Cash show, but no video.
Do you see Eric once in awhile Bobby? You guys were great together ❤
Not any more, no.
Go Bobby!!!
Man that great you were right you could see Eric looking outta corner of his eye and everytime you did the 2 part you looked at him but you did need that, your the best.
The first time I saw that look he gave Bobby I thought it was fear. He knew the voice he was hearing was phenomenal.
so funny bobby, love it
What a great story Bobby !!
Thank you!
When Bobby’s on the gig, the frontman better be wearing asbestos underwear !!
Layla must be the most documented album in history lol
