@@mt3311 Reading is fundamental. Where did I say that he did? He was Johnny’s drummer for thirty-seven years, which means he played drums on hundreds, if not thousands, of songs.
@@jamesdillman6811 And writing better than a 5th grader would have gotten that point across. The Sun sides have a sound that imitates a snare drum. With no drummer. That is what I was referring to. You didn't specify which train songs. Reading I'd fundamental, but better writing through literacy. Have a nice day.
Johnny had a piece of folded paper under the strings to dampen the strings to make a snare drum set. He used to demonstrate that trick to tell how he started in the recording business with no drummer.
Thank you for having done all this work. I am a Texas boy, but I love all this history. Bakersfield, then Texas are my music life. But we all know from whence it came. Love it.

I love what you’re doing Otis! Preserving music history. I’m pretty sure I ran into you at Honky Tonk Tuesday back circa 2015 in Nashville. If not, he was your doppelgänger.
I saw Fluke at the 2008 Selmer Tn. rockabilly festival with about several hundred people sitting on the courthouse lawn with a tiny little stage. He played with Carl Mann and the music was great, but Mr. Holland could spin some masterful stories
Just a couple of weeks ago the Marty Stuart Show on RFD TV featured WS with Kenny Lovelace and James Burton. You can catch it on UA-cam. (Recorded April 16, 2011 episode 67.)
I hope I don't get into trouble with Otis for telling you this, type the following into the youtube search, Tales from the tour bus Jerry Lee lewis. Beware, some seriously funny S#!t.
Wow this is awesome hearing so many years later from the mans own voice. Coincidentally I JUST watched episode of Spa Guy interviewing Stan Perkins Carl's son. He was talking about " FLUKE " I had absolutely no idea who this FLUKE person was. Stan says he had left Johny Cash show Carl had died so Stan and Fluke rebuilt the swimming pool at Carl's old house. Not trying to promote other channel but both stories are excellent and told first person. Which were losing so much of due to age. Thanks for Otis and Spa Guy for preserving and presenting for everyone.
I have met these guys and they were very nice to me Johnny Cash signed an 8 by 10 glossy for me and posed for pictures of my cousin and me. Carl Perkins danced with me. Jerry Lee posted for a picture. Met me Minnie Pearl. Got a picture of her and many other Legends. It was a beautiful time in my life. By the way Jerry Lee was toasted.
great story bother otis ...i kept getting distracted stupidly and was about to kill myself so finally after rewinding 9 bazilian times am glad i sat down and watched great one thanks - SJOC
You don`t need much gear to get a great drum sound. A HI-HAT, half a drum stick, and three ROTO-TOMS with some serious reverb and you got a Pink Floyd track.
These interviews belong in the Smithsonian!! Thank you for your contribution to music history ❤️
Amen to that!!!
Not a bad idea!
The evolution is so organic. What a special time in a very special place. Great Interview, great foresight.
Really great. Thanks.
W.S. Holland is a legend. The train beat with the brushes on the snare on those Johnny Cash songs will be etched into my memory forever.
Holland didn't play on the Cash Sun sides.
