I was lucky enough to hear him while he was in his first innocent bloom. Although he continued to be magnificent there was a special quality in his early performances before the world had intruded as it always does with exceptional artists.
It's 1967. The full performance was at La Scala, with the amazing Leontyne Price. (Amazing is an understatement). Karajan is inspired. Pavarotti is gleaming perfection.
@@jbut1208 looks like Pavarotti singing no?.....a little tongue in cheek comment friend, i have the whole performance on VHS originally, subsequently DVD...every facet and singer is wonderful....he shines like the sun that's all.
What a great singer he was . He could bring tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat. To hear him live gave his voice an extra dimension. When I saw him in Boheme I sent a letter to say that the 16 of us who went to the ROH enjoyed the performance. A few days later 16 autographed photos arrived with a nice letter. We were all taken aback that LP had taken the time to do this. This was in 1975. Henry Webb
What a wonderful memory! I saw him in recital in Sarasota, FL twice - the first when he was young, before the great fame, but just after a lot of recording (Sutherland and the Requiem). I have the LP of this performance but it is wonderful to see him. He had the low range when written, but OH his top. And then, rare among tenors, he actually sings the pianissimos Verdi intended. He had voice and musicianship.
His voice brings me to tears, over and over again... I was so blessed to hear him like 3times in the Met; and 4 times in concerts... Every time I go to the opera I miss this fabulous artist more and more again... RIP Maestro.
Karajan lays down the perfect tapestry for Luciano's thrilling young voice to float on here - this is as close to musical perfection as it gets on stage. Still, some find a way to give thumbs down. May excellence live on and hover untouched by the Philistines!
Wrong. VERDI "lay down the perfect tapestry." Not the conductor. All the notes, rhythm, dynamics, phrase marks and tempos are indicated in the score, by the COMPOSER. Please give credit where it is due.
Used to be, Jussi Bjoerling was the Tenor's Tenor. He now shares that glory with Pavarotti. Two incomparable artists with gorgeous sound, wonderful artistry and vocal technique to burn.
He has that voice when he hits a high note it sound like coming from somewhere. It was so Unique. Thank God we have videos like this that shows who he is in the music industry. SALUTE!!!
Wow!!! This is pure perfection!!! Even Karajan is just enjoying the beautiful music and voice! I can see, even he is amazed by this man, THE MAN! Thank you Luciano! :-)
It's like he has to hold back on the power of his voice, and he does it so well. Can't imagine the control that must take. Not a singer here, just happy to have heard this.
His natural vibrato is just perfect. Some go over the top with theirs, but LP's is natural, never contrived or overblown for operatic effect. A lot of other tenors also sound like they're in a box while trying to make their voice opera-ish...but LP was a natural, like he was riding a bicycle. Had the fortune to see him live in 1998. He came out for five encores. Every jaw was dropped....no one wanted the evening to end.
Listen to this recording and tell me he wasn't the greatest singer who ever lived, and I would call the man a liar. Simply stupendous singing, an artist in his prime doing what he does best.
You people keep arguing and I keep listening to this and weeping . . . Von Karajan waving his swan's arms like a dancer to Luciano's blissful, sacred voice. Wake up! This is music for the dead, an opera to end all suffering and discord, by the greatest operatic composer who ever lived!
My brain once again exploded while watching this. I got excited again and inspired to sing. His a WOW even when he was not as we know him and even got better. Who else has this vocal power. This is BEYOND expectation. Beyond imagination. GODS OF GODS OF TENORS. This world would surely not experience another. Even if we search the parallel universes we shall not find one. THERE'S NO WORD TO EXPRESS HIM.
And for those below spewing filth about size: while it's true that having the belly helps, it should be noted that in Pavarotti's early days, audiences expected him to sound terrible because he was "too thin to be a tenor." Find one of his 1963-66 recordings and tell me he sounds weak, or too quiet. The man could blow the doors out in a concert hall even then.
YES Someone said they saw him singing outside and they were ten feet in front of him and the ground shook when he sang, There won't be another one like him. Inour time or any time.
Anyone else watch this and the Jonas Kaufman back to back? Both are hauntingly beautiful so no need to pick favorites…We are so blessed to have this. What an inspiration in dark times.
Even years later when time and age took its tole on him. He could still sing this better than most others. His level was so high that even when diminished his sound was amazing. Just listen to his Met performance of Aida in 2001 at 66 years old amazing.
Meglio di Pavarotti Corelli, ma questa non e' una novita' data la superiorita' vocale scenica del tenore Anconetano ua-cam.com/video/QPPHaTfe1oI/v-deo.html
Hm, looking at Karajan and Paverotti here, there's not very much doubt which one of 'em raided the opera house kitchen and ate all the pies :-D (Just kidding! Pav was a magnificently talented man - even if not exactly a diet guru!)
He makes a musical mistake around 1:31-2, which I think was caused by Karajan’s perverse control-freak conducting. When as a great a singer as the young P. is your soloist you follow him.

Ingemisco is from the text of the requiem mass and when I think requiem I think Mozart and maybe Faure before Verdi or Berlioz. I came here curious to hear Pavarotti sing Mozart, which I doubt he ever did. Wrong kind of voice.
Pavarotti sang Idamante in Mozart's Idomeneo at Glyndebourne in the 60's and sang Idomeneo at the Met in the 80's. It's on DVD and he's fabulous. He always said he loved Mozart and was very respectful of it.
This was filmed at La Scala in 1967 and how astonishingly beautiful Pavarotti sounded in those days amazes me every time I listen to this.
