I saw and heard Maestro Pavarotti in Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC back in 1991 or so. I will always remember hearing that voice and not believing that he could really sing like that. It was incredible. We were so spoiled back then but we didn’t realize it like most spoiled people until he was gone, I saw and heard Placido Domingo do La Boheme as well in the mid 1990s but Luciano was in a class of his own.i cannot help to leave at least a bit disappointed when I attend an opera that features a male tenor since then.
very informative sound, you can see how his voice reaches out to the audience, you can instantly tell its his voice. the quality the head and shoulders above everyone else, a freak of nature, and thank goodness for this freak,
Oh my! Bravo Luchiano! The sadness of my heart brought tears to my eyes. I had the honor of meeting Luchiano Pavarotti in 1980. It is one of the most memorable moments of my life.
Last season i've been to "Tosca", "Norma", "Turandot", "Elixir di amore", in Sofia opera; I cried all the time thinking of him and missing him. Opera is great art, admire all artists, but freedom and passion in his voice is so unique!
An amateur video and yet his voice if PERFECT! Every note beautiful and so engaging. No one can ever equal Luciano! Thank you for this wonderful experience!
Pava makes singing like an angel seem so easy. His voice is so rich, projection so excellent even in this amateur video. What a treasure! Thank you for posting. I would give anything to have seen him in live performance!
his projection doesnt diminish in a video, its just THERE, always, and his diction was so flawless you could learn Italian by listening to him. My word, I also would give an arm to have seen him live. It was my fault I had no interest in opera till I heard him sing 13 years after he became silent to this mourning world.
I was lucky enough to see dear Luciano at a solo performance in Dallas many years ago. How I would have loved to have seen him in a full opera. Thank you for positing this video! The audio is excellent for a hand-held camera.
The voice is pristine here. This is singing of the highest caliber. I am happy that someone mentioned his diction. I have always thought that Pavarotti had the best diction of any singer I have ever heard. Thank you for posting this.
Mejor que Plácido Domingo ? Imposible !!
He, Sutherland, Callas, and Simionato are the four best voices I've ever heard. Simionato had the best technique of any mezzo, Callas introduced a whole new style of bel canto melodrama, Sutherland took the ball from Callas and created her own kingdom. But Luciano Pavarotti, there is no voice that can equal the focus, power and grandeur of his singing - what I heard him do at The Met so many years ago.
He sounds like I remember his voice, brigth and brilliant with a lot of "travell through the stage", Bravooo!!!!, he was one of the best of the best ever!!!
That's not old footage of Pavarotti. He's pretty big there and it's the voice of middle aged Pavarotti. Look of the footage of him singing in Russia in 1965, much slimmer and a different voice than here..
Martin Russell I think the uploader is saying that the video quality is amateur, not the maestro himself. I don't think he sang Cavaradossi until later in his career. Whatever the case may be, this is a gem!
@MrLuistena: Tenor voices, and for the fact, singers have different "colors", tessituras, and styles in their singing and must NEVER be compared-. Brown eyes and blue eyes are both beautiful and different, for that matter.
You are correct. A mic in the hair was used and the other artist was told not stand close or on the other side of her head where it was located while singing duets. In rehearsal he forgot and it showed. It was all carefully planned.
I'm afraid I cannot say that I admire the performance artistically but thank you so much for uploading nevertheless! We get to see the Master just how those sitting in the audience did.
OH I wish everyone that had met pavarotti or taken a picture or a video would show them, it's a crime not to share each word, syllable with the world. also the opera houses who have video hidden,
This is such magnificent singing. My only complaint is that they stop the music for applause after the aria, which indeed goes on as Puccini wanted it. Oh well... I'm a purist.
The Met is is not miked, friend! It's big but it has good acoustics. Hardly any opera houses are miked, and certainly not the most important and prestigioius ones like the Met.
Your naivety is astounding. I've known artists and have seen microphones placed on their bodies at that Theater simply because their voices needed the extra help. Try not to believe the company line.
Even in amateur recording Pavarotti sounds amazing... O_O. I think he is God of voice and song. Even in poor recording his voice ... it is piercing into ones soul.
Hey, those of you who gripe about the sound...nuts. this is doggoned good for what must be a surreptitious recording.. I mean...what do you want? There is no flutter...the recording speed is smack on..and maybe it is a little tin canny...for Pete's sake... upgrade with your imaginations. A lot to work with here. Hooray for the sneaky rasscal who got it.
Incredible recording. My goodness, the quality of the voice at his age is beyond words. His voice and its overtones project effortlessly. Indeed, Pavarotti had amazing projection of sound. A small sound could expand and carry so well.
I heard him live at the Met in Rigoletto in the late 80's and he had just gotten over the flu.. His voice was BIG round and resonant.. He was incredible.
Gee, I took Jon Frederic West's advice to see this video, did it on June 7 2022, and found that I was the last individual to comment on it..,having seen it already two years ago...What's amazing is that the last commenter before me was EIGHT YEARSS prior to that !! Come on ! BTW, I am even more amazed at the sound now than then WOW !
The quality of the reproduction or even a live performance no matter what ...always leaves you yearning for more of his voice..thank you for posting Il Maestro....
Rich, easy delivery and so resonant. That Pavarotti tone is just utterly hypnotic.
You can hear that perfect, golden “ring” on every note. That was the splendor of his gorgeous instrument.

I regret missing one of his live performances... but grateful for these. Mercy, he was magnificent.
we miss you great Luciano!

My God, he is magnificent. When Pavarotti sings, I forget to breathe.
His voice is so pure and beautiful. His diction is second to none. It's wonderful that he recorded so much so we can still his gorgeous voice.
The voice is the music of the human soul in my opinion, and Pavarotti has reached 7th heaven with it.
Oh my! Bravo Luchiano! The sadness of my heart brought tears to my eyes. I had the honor of meeting Luchiano Pavarotti in 1980. It is one of the most memorable moments of my life.
Luciano without H :-)
Fantastic projection and quality of voice.
On stage is where we can appreciate the true beauty and power of the voice. Grande Maestro!. Thanks for sharing
With his voice he was able to fill not only the biggest auditoriums but also the hearts of all .
Last season i've been to "Tosca", "Norma", "Turandot", "Elixir di amore", in Sofia opera; I cried all the time thinking of him and missing him. Opera is great art, admire all artists, but freedom and passion in his voice is so unique!

Stunning, as ever! What a voice. Miss him so much1
Most beautiful tenor voice ever
And I was at the back of the Met, and I could hear him like he was singing next to me. His voice carried well.
The crowd was in a coma! What a powerhouse he was. That was deserving of a standing O.
Pava makes singing like an angel seem so easy. His voice is so rich, projection so excellent even in this amateur video. What a treasure! Thank you for posting. I would give anything to have seen him in live performance!
edejan I did. I can never forget that beautiful sound! A miracle
edejan I was very fortunate to have seen him in la Bourne with Mirella Freni at the Met. What a treat.
Very lucky.
OMG so lucky.
his projection doesnt diminish in a video, its just THERE, always, and his diction was so flawless you could learn Italian by listening to him. My word, I also would give an arm to have seen him live. It was my fault I had no interest in opera till I heard him sing 13 years after he became silent to this mourning world.
He was the best....
True Genius....
Our world is grateful....

The Maestro belongs to the ages. RIP Luciano!
This was back when voices weren’t just trained to resonate, but to project. 😩
My God what a Voice
Magnífico, el mejor por siempre jamás... PAVAROTTI!!
Magnífico.
Mejor que Plácido Domingo ? Imposible !! Pleez.. Pavarotti had an infinitely better voice than Domingo
@@piquete48 Corelli and Del Monaco....
No one can touch him.
Only God can. Even though I think God will stand in silence to hear what Pavarotti has to say.
Simply Devine!
amazing as ever
Grande Luciano ...!
Ivelina Mikova I
the ever reliable incandescent brilliance well in evidence in one of his very best roles.

Keen observation, Marty... :)
from mid 1990s
Martin Russell I think the uploader is saying that the video quality is amateur, not the maestro himself. I don't think he sang Cavaradossi until later in his career. Whatever the case may be, this is a gem!
i agree, he is far too heavy for an early performance. in his early career he was shall we say of slim build
Martin Russell I
BRAVO!
Wow, he's in very fine voice here, sounds like mid-eighties rather than late nineties.
This is a great video thanks for shering with all of us, do you have any more like this?
Fantastic.
He was sure on that night!
@MrLuistena: Tenor voices, and for the fact, singers have different "colors", tessituras, and styles in their singing and must NEVER be compared-. Brown eyes and blue eyes are both beautiful and different, for that matter.
Thank you very much! Yes, the conductor for this performance was Marco Armiliato. 16 years ago...
Yes, once upon a time!!!!
i allmost cried !
@The2627700 Dear Valeriano, Congratulations if you were there as The Carceriere. Question: It was Marco Armillatto de Conductor? I doubt it!
Thanks!
¡
Portentoso!
My hairs are standing on end! Anyone else's?

OMG😲wow!😍
You are correct. A mic in the hair was used and the other artist was told not stand close or on the other side of her head where it was located while singing duets. In rehearsal he forgot and it showed. It was all carefully planned.
The Met certainly does not use microphones for any reasons other than broadcasting or recording.
VinylToVideo lol good one
Not sure what’s meant by “amateur” but based on his weight and tone of the voice, this was recorded well into his professional career.
Only one Pavarotti.
I'm afraid I cannot say that I admire the performance artistically but thank you so much for uploading nevertheless! We get to see the Master just how those sitting in the audience did.
@ellicantropo and you listen domingo!! we listen olso Pavarotti!"!!
Does anyone know the date of the performance? Venue? Maestro?
If I recall 1994 in Philadelphia.
Pavarotti
I wonder what year this was and where.
@PavarottiForever questo video è del 1996.. Ciao

It seems to be end of 70s, not earlier.
Tosca was not his suitable role, but what a voice!
2019?
If what were true? And The Metropolitan Opera in New York City
Maestro tempi far too fast!
And yes folks... the MET has used microphones before.
Incredible singer. Very poor video quality. A shame better equipment was not available. È un peccato.

The voice is spectacular, but the performance is not particularly artistic.

Sniveling vulgarians they are.
PS, I wish whoever recorded this wrote an article about the night.
This is the Pavarotti I remember. Incredible forward projection. Nice.
