I saw and heard Maestro Pavarotti in Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC back in 1991 or so. I will always remember hearing that voice and not believing that he could really sing like that. It was incredible. We were so spoiled back then but we didn’t realize it like most spoiled people until he was gone, I saw and heard Placido Domingo do La Boheme as well in the mid 1990s but Luciano was in a class of his own.i cannot help to leave at least a bit disappointed when I attend an opera that features a male tenor since then.
I heard him live at the Met in Rigoletto in the late 80's and he had just gotten over the flu.. His voice was BIG round and resonant.. He was incredible.
very informative sound, you can see how his voice reaches out to the audience, you can instantly tell its his voice. the quality the head and shoulders above everyone else, a freak of nature, and thank goodness for this freak,
He sounds like I remember his voice, brigth and brilliant with a lot of "travell through the stage", Bravooo!!!!, he was one of the best of the best ever!!!
Even in amateur recording Pavarotti sounds amazing... O_O. I think he is God of voice and song. Even in poor recording his voice ... it is piercing into ones soul.
Incredible recording. My goodness, the quality of the voice at his age is beyond words. His voice and its overtones project effortlessly. Indeed, Pavarotti had amazing projection of sound. A small sound could expand and carry so well.
Oh my! Bravo Luchiano! The sadness of my heart brought tears to my eyes. I had the honor of meeting Luchiano Pavarotti in 1980. It is one of the most memorable moments of my life.
An amateur video and yet his voice if PERFECT! Every note beautiful and so engaging. No one can ever equal Luciano! Thank you for this wonderful experience!
Last season i've been to "Tosca", "Norma", "Turandot", "Elixir di amore", in Sofia opera; I cried all the time thinking of him and missing him. Opera is great art, admire all artists, but freedom and passion in his voice is so unique!

Pava makes singing like an angel seem so easy. His voice is so rich, projection so excellent even in this amateur video. What a treasure! Thank you for posting. I would give anything to have seen him in live performance!
his projection doesnt diminish in a video, its just THERE, always, and his diction was so flawless you could learn Italian by listening to him. My word, I also would give an arm to have seen him live. It was my fault I had no interest in opera till I heard him sing 13 years after he became silent to this mourning world.
The voice is pristine here. This is singing of the highest caliber. I am happy that someone mentioned his diction. I have always thought that Pavarotti had the best diction of any singer I have ever heard. Thank you for posting this.
thanks for this gem !every note perfect and beautiful, pity there's not much more of this kind of stuff around which shows just how good he was as opposed to the microphoned concerts my bad luck to see him in London early 90s he had a cold but the power and beauty of the voice still shone through
He, Sutherland, Callas, and Simionato are the four best voices I've ever heard. Simionato had the best technique of any mezzo, Callas introduced a whole new style of bel canto melodrama, Sutherland took the ball from Callas and created her own kingdom. But Luciano Pavarotti, there is no voice that can equal the focus, power and grandeur of his singing - what I heard him do at The Met so many years ago.
Hey, those of you who gripe about the sound...nuts. this is doggoned good for what must be a surreptitious recording.. I mean...what do you want? There is no flutter...the recording speed is smack on..and maybe it is a little tin canny...for Pete's sake... upgrade with your imaginations. A lot to work with here. Hooray for the sneaky rasscal who got it.
@MrLuistena: Tenor voices, and for the fact, singers have different "colors", tessituras, and styles in their singing and must NEVER be compared-. Brown eyes and blue eyes are both beautiful and different, for that matter.
That's not old footage of Pavarotti. He's pretty big there and it's the voice of middle aged Pavarotti. Look of the footage of him singing in Russia in 1965, much slimmer and a different voice than here..
Martin Russell I think the uploader is saying that the video quality is amateur, not the maestro himself. I don't think he sang Cavaradossi until later in his career. Whatever the case may be, this is a gem!
I'm afraid I cannot say that I admire the performance artistically but thank you so much for uploading nevertheless! We get to see the Master just how those sitting in the audience did.
You are correct. A mic in the hair was used and the other artist was told not stand close or on the other side of her head where it was located while singing duets. In rehearsal he forgot and it showed. It was all carefully planned.
eh rmm, the acoustics sont pas terrible at the Met, and still he always carried, because he knew his technique. You are right, of course, about the not needing mikes...but I was shocked to see singers miked in the Opera Comique a Paris, not by any means an enormous house, and with the excellent acoustics of the older houses. Ma!! what happened to basic technique?!! interesting, though , that J Thibedo assumed that singers were miked, though...generational assumptions...
gwirgalon there are mics at the met as well... vocal teaching is at an all time low. Talented singers everywhere but with no guidance they don't reach potential.
@@js59695 The oprea at the Met isn't mic'd, the Met has very odd acoustics, you have to decide if you want good seats and OK sound or cheap seats and incredible sound... Personally I think Domingos voice carries better at the Met then Pavarotti. However, I suspect this performance is late 90s when the maestros voice wasn't what it once was. I saw Pavarotti in concert in 94 in an arena, and Tosca at the Met in 98. The vocal decline in 4 years was very noticeable. Don't get me wrong Pavarotti on an off day is a thousand times better than Flores at his best. I recently saw Domingo on his opening of Luisa Miller, I sat in an overhang in the Parterre, Domingo was the baritone, Beczala was the tenor and Yoncheva was the soprano thankfully Miller is a heavy baritone oprea. The overhang had a slight muffle, Yoncheva was beautiful and came through well, Domingo was incredible and that's my unbiased opinion. He was as powerful as I've ever heard him and the richness of his voice peirced the house... Baczala was awful, his voice isn't big enough for the Met and really Yoncheva and Domingo carried the opera. Baczala has an awful over covered voice. There was a mezzo soprano making her debut that night and she also had a fantastic voice. The Met is a big house and at 78 Domingo is still impressive and can boom at the Met with ease. Please don't take this the wrong way, Luciano Pavarotti was and always will be my favorite operatic tenor but he should have retired long before he did by the time I saw him sing Tosca he was well past his prime. I don't know what they're teaching the new Tenors today but they all seem to be overly cautious with their voices and won't open up. They all seem to have an unpleasant nasal sound and want to keep the throat overly covered, and I know that's considered a more elegant and proper sound however if you listen to Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma most of it was uncovered, he knew when to take a chance , he knew what his voice could do, and he knew when to uncover and let that beautiful instrument play. It's almost as if they are taking it to the extreme. People talk about Juan Diego Florez and his high C's in La fille du régiment and he sounds like he's singing them through his nose. They all sound very forced. A tenor should sound like a relaxed breath of air in the legato, and to me they sound like they are behind a toy boat trying to blow wind in the sail. (that's the best metaphor I could think of) Sorry I didn't mean for this to ramble , this is just my amateur opinion. I doubt I'll see the next Pavarotti or Domingo in my lifetime. I'm thankful just for the few opportunities I've had to see them in opera and concert.
This is such magnificent singing. My only complaint is that they stop the music for applause after the aria, which indeed goes on as Puccini wanted it. Oh well... I'm a purist.
Rich, easy delivery and so resonant. That Pavarotti tone is just utterly hypnotic.
You can hear that perfect, golden “ring” on every note. That was the splendor of his gorgeous instrument.
we miss you great Luciano!

The voice is the music of the human soul in my opinion, and Pavarotti has reached 7th heaven with it.

And I was at the back of the Met, and I could hear him like he was singing next to me. His voice carried well.

The Maestro belongs to the ages. RIP Luciano!

This looks like La Scala, and I'm guessing it is early to mid 1990's.
Wow, he's in very fine voice here, sounds like mid-eighties rather than late nineties.
This was back when voices weren’t just trained to resonate, but to project. 😩
Not sure what’s meant by “amateur” but based on his weight and tone of the voice, this was recorded well into his professional career.
