As a floor layer I would recommend you put double sided tape down first and stick vinyl to it before trimming , much easier.

As a floor layer who is a vinyl specialist.
Use a hooked blade and/or concave.
They are much easier to control whilst cutting in against the skirt or loo.

Got a thin length of wood. Put double sided tape on the wood. Lay the wood next to the wall and push you vinyl onto it. Lift vinyl and cut. The perfect line. Triangle bit of wood for the corners and nice and easy to cut corners and edges and nice fitting floor 😊

Tip on removing a door if you don't want to work around it: Tap the hinge pins out and take the door off. No need to worry about screwing hinges back on and things not lining up afterward.
I wish I'd watched this before trimming up my vinyl to go around corners and stuff. It ended up a total mess near the door.
I can't take my bathtub up or move stuff there. I'm fortunate that my toilet isn't in yet and I used a template to cut the hole in the middle without cutting down the back to have a seam.
Do you have any tips on how to install new vinyl where it transitions to carpet that is already in place? My old linoleum tucked under the carpet.

Me too but a utility room! We need to start lady diy groups where we can just get a second pair of hands for an hour when we need to lift heavy stuff. I had to lift a cupboard and was quoted 90 quid to 150 quid just to get a guy to move one cupboard for me ..as it turned out i was able to drag it on an old rug which was a greay suggwstion. I had to get help from a neighbour to put the top back up..i could take it down but not hoist it back up...but managed to find a neighbour walking past and got him for three minutes to give me and hand and made him a cup of tea and some biccies. I dont know if ill bother putting it back when the lino is down. Then i have to move the sink and plumb it in and cut a worktop and somehow make that atatched to the wall because underneath is just the washing machine. Sigh. That will definitely need a helping hand or just some company and encouragement would do me to be honest. Its the standing there not sure of yourself and worrying about how to do it that takes the most time ..if somone else was there i couldnt piddle about so much overthinking it all. My back is killing me though after movibg the cupboard.

Seriously all the comments about her looks. Sheesh. I'm wanting to know what she did with the cut that meets up BEHIND the toliet...did she just tape it down? I think I'd use a glue. I was wondering if you need a seal on top of some sort in a seam like that to prevent peeling or dirt in the crack. My free lino is shy 2 inches along one wall so it's a big seam I'm wondering how to do REALLY WELL.

As a general rule you should avoid laying a new vinyl on top of an existing that's been laid with either double sided tape or an adhesive as it will cause the new vinyl to sweat and bubble due to a chemical reaction called plasticiser migration. Always uplift existing flooring.

Nice video but... try using a knife with a concave blade to cut, rather than scissors. Also try leaving about 2 inches spare up each wall, then pull back halfway and glue, as you'll find it easier to cut off an inch or so rather than a tiny piece and the vinyl won't move as you're cutting.

I've never had a problem with it, and it's far easier to mount the door back in place with hinges that are ALREADY INSTALLED for proper alignment than risking taking the hinges out and having issues stripping screw heads or screw holes.

I've been reading so many comments, and I dare not tell anyone what that floor job will look like in 6 months.😢 She did such a great job putting it down. I enjoyed watching her.
But... Without floor adhesive applied to the back of that vinyl. It will wrinkle then crease flat when you step on it over and over, then crack and tear. Don't get any water in that tear. This could all happen fast in a day or 2. And your vinyl covering is gone. 😞 Good luck to everyone. 🇺🇸

However, when it comes to adhering the floor I would use either a spray adhesive or pressure sensitive adhesive, and cover the whole floor, and i would use a hook blade Stanley rather than scissors. I'm not being negative but you skipped a few steps 1. Embossment leveling the floor (spreading patch compound to get rid of the pattern of the vinyl underneath) 2. taping it like that will allow it to tear easily (full spread glue is the only way to fly), 3. pull the toilet and undercut the door jambs (if you don't it will curl away if you use caulk it will last about 1-2 years and allow water to penetrate and curl away too). I'm a professional vinyl installer I'm impressed with how well you cut it in but best thing to do is make a pattern and transfer that to the sheet of vinyl for beginners it's like a sewing pattern. You cut craft paper to fit your room and then lay it on top of the vinyl and trace it make sure to Mark the top of your pattern if you accidentally put the pattern on the vinyl upside down it will be a mirror image of the floor and won't fit the cuts will be backwards. Any seams will require seam sealer they are manufacturer specific. If you don't the seams will separate. If you pattern it cut the paper to fit if you cut it short you can just start over and you haven't ruined your vinyl. Good luck 👍

I laid down vinyl flooring in my dad's bathroom, and when I wanted to do it the way she does it in the video, my elderly father yelled at me and told me to measure everything first. I did, and the measurements were way off. It was a nightmare to deal with vinyl flooring even for such a small bathroom. There wasn't enough flooring in some spots, and too much in the other spots, and there was no wiggle room. Next project is vinyl flooring for the kitchen, but this time I'm doing the vinyl tiles instead of the roll of vinyl. It's easier to deal with. Though the kitchen would be easier to do with a big sheet of vinyl flooring and I don't have the obstacles that a bathroom has, my dad insists on the tiles since I 'can't measure worth a damn'. SMH

    • @bluefrog85

@Jonas Sandoy If you're going to do something like that you may as well go to the dollar store and grab some wrapping paper and use that... Seems like a waste of time honestly- i've never seen a flooring person do this at all. If you do see one do this you should fire them probably. My uncle did flooring since before I was born and did it about like she was doing it- he'd unroll the carpet or tile and start cutting.

    • @kaybrown5637
      @kaybrown5637 5 років тому

@Jonas Sandoy I found something called contractor's paper at a DIY store. I'm going to buy a few rolls next time I do any flooring. It's very wide, so it'll be easier to make a pattern. Nice thing is, that pattern can be saved for future flooring projects to be done in the same room.

    Philippa (and All),
Howdy! Well, I did get the ol' bathroom floor covered with lino as per your instructional video. I started it and finished it just yesterday (June 28th, in the Yeare of Somebody's Lord 2018). I originally wrote that I was to start this job on June 24th or so, but I decided I had to do a bit of wood repair and sanding before applying the lino, so yesterday was the day for the flooring.
Despite this being my first time doing this, the job ended-up having gone very, very well. This, naturally, surprised me as I'd never done it before, and even with great instructions (like yours), some things take a bit of practice. I really felt I was in over my head, but the job had to be done. Immediately before walking myself and the lino into the bathroom I sat my sorry self down in front of the computer, and watch this video one more time. I had already watched it enough to have all the techniques memorized, but I just needed to hear it from you one more time before I faced my bathroom destiny. (laughing... at me). I needed the reassurance.(ha) I forced myself to stay calm even when I felt I should not have attempted this job, and just took one step at a time, following the methods you showed us. Suddenly the lino began falling into place and laying flat and making me very happy! see---> #;^\ grrr! i'm very happy. grrr! It was like a miracle to me! And I sure had some very kind thoughts of you at that moment.
From that point onward I had more room to move around to get the job done, and things continued to go well. After the precision cuts were finished, and all looked pretty darn good, I rolled my computer chair to the bathroom doorway, and with a glass on water in my hand, I just sat there a while looking at how great things went. Boy, was I glad that job was over. Beginner's nerves (and lack of experience). Last night I went to sleep for the first time in a month without worrying about what job I would be tackling in the olde bathroom on the morrow. Today... I am one happy boy! see---> #;^\ grrr. i'm one happy boy. grrr.
Philippa, if not for your video I do not think I would have attempted to lay lino flooring. Each time I watched this video I kept thinking, "Maybe I can do this". Finally, I said, "Oh, well... let's just give this thing a go!". I am happy the job is done. And I am happy the job is done correctly. I thank you very much again, Philippa. You are groovy. # :^) And you are very skilled, knowledgeable, witty, and nice. You are appreciated, my friend.
If it seems I have written too much, well, it is because laying the lino was the last part of re-doing the entire bathroom, including some sub-flooring repairs, mold removal, a bit of plumbing, painting, etc. (most of which I also didn't know anything about prior to this project), so I was getting a'might tired fumbling around with these unfamiliar jobs and getting it done. All the while I knew the last step was going to be laying the lino. And, I dreaded that part of the job, too.
Thanks (again) to you, I got through that very last part of this big project, and it was done correctly, and the bathroom looks great now. I would say that I am proud of myself, but, alas, I am way too humble to say that. However, I can say that you are the best, Philippa. And I am indebted to you for your kindness in sharing your knowledge to help so many others like me... and even me. And for helping to give us enough confidence to tackle these jobs. Bless your heart.
    Philippa, be well... you're swell.
Best Wishes Always & The Best Life Has To Offer You.
    Most Sincerely,
    Wombat Willie
(who can now lay lino flooring thanks to one special woman)

A faster way to take a door off is to pop the hinge pins out and pull the door off. It's easier to do that then to line up screws again and make sure the door swings the same.
I have Better Than Wax seals instead of wax and I have a toilet jack so I can pull my toilet out and move it out of the way before laying the floor. I will need to pull the toilet to repair the floor underneath before installing vinyl sheet anyway.
The water and dish soap idea to keep caulk from sticking where you don't want it is a good idea.
Thank you! I will have to use that and some of these techniques when installing in my bathroom (after I repair the subfloor).
Any tips for how to deal with gaps/seams on underlayment plywood?

Philippa, thank you for this great video. I have this very job to do to finish-up a big bathroom project. And boy, am I looking forward to finishing-up this big bathroom project. I wasn't sure that the vinyl could be folded so much without cracking, but I now know that the vinyl is very flexible, and I will not have to remove the vanity and toilet to get the new vinyl right up to (and even under the edge) of them. You were right to the point, while still being very clear in your instructions. And the video shows us exactly how to do what you are instructing us to do. Outstanding job on the vinyl flooring, and in showing me how I can do the same. The reading on my stress meter has dropped to about zero now. (laughing... at me) Tomorrow that job WILL be finished! Again... thanks a million, Philippa! You are much appreciated! ~wombat willie #:^)

Great video, and excellent tips. The only thing I would suggest to do differently is to remove the toilet before the installation. That way the vinyl is under the toilet, right up to the ring, and there will be no issues in the future if you ever have to change your toilet and the footprint is different than the contour of the installed toilet.
