  • In honor of Soo Line 1003's 110th Birthday, the Steam Locomotive Heritage Association, caretakers of the locomotive, partnered with Steel Highway and Ethan Brodie to host a photo charter along former Milwaukee Road territory of East Central Wisconsin! Come along as the "Midwest's Mike" struts her stuff with a period freight train, working along what is now the Wisconsin and Southern's Markesan, Oshkosh, and Milwaukee Subdivisions!
We begin on the night of November 10th 2023, as the 1913 Alco is steamed up for Hartford's Yearly "Santa Train" the following day, as well as the photo charter the following Sunday. A small group of us "younguns" banded together to see that she got a proper cleaning, as it had been several years since she'd received a good wipe down. Using mineral spirits, brass polish, and shop rags, we worked well into the night, pausing only to salute WSOR's T-003 as it hustled through toward's Horicon. Over the next couple days, the compliments we received on the lady's shine were more than enough to satisfy and justify our efforts.
Sunday Morning, having spent the night with her train in Brandon, 1003 shoved her train up the Markesan Sub to Fairwater, and the day was on! In spite of Mother Nature proving to be a tad windy, we worked our way south, pausing for several photo runs and a service stop in Brandon before heading south down the Oshkosh Sub! Period actors and automobiles were in abundance, especially at Burnett, where photo runs with a Grain Truck, two fire engines, a tractor, and a vintage pick-up truck took place before the Lady's coal supply was topped off. After a couple more runbys into and around Horicon, including a hand-up of orders at the Horicon Station, Engineer Ken Ristow put 1003 through her paces on the last higher-speed stretch back to Hartford. The climax of the day came at Rubicon, where three photo runs were made in town, and past St John The Evangelist Catholic Church and its cemetery. The last runby alone just about woke the dead, as Ken let the lady roar through town, before easing her off on the last, light stretch back home to the Wisconsin Auto Museum.
A huge thank you to the volunteers of the SLHA, those of Steel Highway, and Ethan Brodie for putting together such a spectacular event!
Enjoy Everybody! There is plenty more to come!
