So I didn't plan on doing a video on this as I am waiting for the official gameplay reveal tomorrow to form a true opinion, but many people keep asking me how I feel about the trailer. Well here you go. This discussion may be irrelevant come tomorrow.

Honestly this trailer was something they should have released as a Trailer 2 highlighting the companions which would have allowed to increase the hype of a hypothetical Trailer 1 that showed more of the Dreadwolf, the lands of Tevinter and maybe a hint of each companion like the previous teasers released years ago. Would be nothing new, but would make the marketing better... But I can be wrong because I'm not a specialist.
I'm not judging the game early, and I think it'll be a good game in the end. The only thing they can't do is to make the Inquisitor and the Dreadwolf as sideline characters in this game.

I have no idea what they were thinking with that "Veil Jumper". The Fade is not supposed to be fun, quite the opposite. It is the realm of nightmares; the kind of shit your brain shuts down to protect you from. Visiting the Fade is a traumatic, horrifying experience that no one will go through without an unbelievably good reason.
I can only think that they give her a personality like Sera, where you actually realize that person is kind of crazy or has a lot going on that makes them the way they are. Otherwise it doesn't make sense to me either.

I didn't get fun. She looked relieved to get out and then horrified to be pulled back in. I originally watched the trailer without sound, so maybe I just saw it differently
Well if you take Solas into the fade in inquisition he says there are other places in the fade that are nicer and that it is "warped" by our perspective. Kind of like how each of the companions see the enemies differently. It could be since she has a happy/bubbly personality that the fade is peaceful for her and she goes to the better places.
Remember Solas? The kind of important character who would sleep in dank ass ruins and shit solely to visit the fade? There are many reasons one would want to visit the fade.
This does feel a lot like a situation where a naive marketing agency once saw a Borderlands trailer and thought "this is what gamers like."
If it was just a goofy trailer, I wouldn't be worried. This is after layoffs, tons of quitting, several restarts, and the mess of andromeda and anthem...so...
This. How can you possibly give Bioware any benefit of the doubt now? This is not the same company we grew up with as kids.

DA:I was an offline MMO game, some good moments but still very disappointing. I'm not even going to get into Andromeda and Anthem.

@kylio95 I never got into ME. I was always a DA fan. I fell off at DA3. I kept hearing DA3 was an offline mmo, too, and couldn't work up to play it.

This is what happens when corporations prioritize ivy league graduates over people with actual experience.
It was being voiced over by Varric and Harding, I think they were trying to be unserious about it to reflect the characters. It missed the mark and came off a bit marvel-ish, but I understand what they were going for.
In the Dragon Age Last Flight novel, it is established that the Grey Warden Mage Isseya following the orders of the First Warden created an altered Joining combined with Blood Magic for the Griffins with the goal of making them immune to the Taint. That's what led to their extinction. But Isseya also managed to save 13 eggs and purified them from the Taint somehow and placed them in a kind of Arcane Suspended Animation until all of the Tainted Griffins had died out. In 9:42 Dragon, the Grey Warden- Recruit Valya finally found the clutched and returned with 13 healthy Griffin hatchlings.

Seems like this trailer was made 5 or 6 years ago when the game was still being developed as a multiplayer live service.

@@Brainwashedgoat Darkspawns body is more disproportionated than before and they had more complex details for their faces and dry and wrinkled skin smeard with taint around eyes, nose and mouth. This one here has more smoother and cleaner skin than darkspawn in previous 2 games but all in all they are prety close as an idea. I dont like the looks of it but its not far from previous models... Hopefully, game will do it better than trailer. Tiny bit of hope and no expectations.
Maybe I'm coping, but I'm hopeful that the first trailer was just an artistically tone-deaf marketing piece that doesn't represent the aesthetics of the actual game. Because my God, it looked like a mobile game cinematic 😂 The little gameplay snippet they posted today restored a bit of faith. Looking forward to seeing the full reveal on Tuesday.

In some big companies, the marketing team has its own view and mentality, and create their own thing sort of... and it is approved by administrators ; meaning that the devs (design/concept, artists, programmers) may not have much power over the marketing videos and documents. Folks in marketing can easily forget how they can create a bad form of hype or impressions that are not on the mark; might as well just showcase actual gameplay and let the consumers judge the real thing. Here, the marketing team did not understand what the Dragon Age fans want: to see RPG, see companion dialogs, hints of story/mood. Which means I am holding my judgements for actual gameplay. Trailers for Avowed (by Obsidian) have a similar problem in my opinion.
I'm convinced marketing teams don't use the extensions that let them see the dislikes.

They get enough money and as a company that should care the same for their veteran fans, they should be able to create a trailer that is just a better representation of the game and what it is about. I don’t see why they cannot show this to the creative team first so people can give feedback. Beats me

Rationally, I could not judge based off the moronic visuals of a marketing trailer, but the gameplay shown was your usual railroad action-adventure.
Considering none of the people who worked on Origins are at Bioware these days, I'm not surprised.
This game was changed by suits at EA to appeal to as many people as possible and clearly Marvel vibe was the scope.

DAO with its different odd guilds so you can get xp and gold tho? Literially none of the DAO sidequests lead to anything, atleast in DAI it feels like you're doing something and getting rewarded.
I also felt like Fable looked more Dragon Age than Dragon Age was supposed to... And Fable is supposed to be more quirky, comical, with light hearted fantasy. I miss the dark gritty medieval fantasy Dragon Age used to be :(

All the characters look a bit flamboyant and cartoon-ish.
Even if everything else about this game is amazing, the only saving grace would be if you can kick the companions from your group.
I also said that this trailer would probably not have been so negatively received if it hadn't been the first actual piece of confirmed stuff we've gotten after 10 years. If this had been a second trailer focusing on the companions after the first trailer had focused more on the story then yeah, sure. I was initially bummed but after watching it a couple times and seeing the gameplay footage and seeing other tidbits they've been dropping I'm starting to feel excited. I hope tomorrow doesn't dissapoint.
The Darkspawn now look like something out of Medievil, a 1998 Playstation game with a goofy skeleton protaganist.
They also looked cartoonishly goofy in Origins and DA2 so this is quite a strange complaint to be making. The only time they looked intimidating and dark fantasy was in DAI The Descent.

Yea. I think they threw that trailer together as fast as possible. I don't think they realized the hate they would get. It was such a bad trailer. I am not excited anymore but will be watching tomorrow. I pray that it's not like the MCU.
I honestly think their thought process was that since BG3's companion were so popular and beloved and a big reason why that game is so loved that Bioware themselves should push their cast of companions to try and mimic what BG3 did. That's why the focus has changed from Solas the Dreadwolf to The Veilguard.

I believe it was MrMattyPlays who said it but he described this trailer as potentially another “marvelfication” piece of media and I completely agree. A group of cartoonish, quirky, and goofy characters that each fit into some fantasy stereotype is not the move.
As a comics fan, it bugs me people are using the name of one of my favorite publishers to describe certain tones.
Seriously, there’s more to Marvel than just the goofy MCU stuff. Ultimates #1 just came out last week and it’s an actual mature and new take on the Avengers that doesn’t fit the more comedic mold of the MCU.
I just hate the term ‘marvelfication’ because it’s incredibly inaccurate.

Massive marketing failure on EAs part, I don’t think BioWare had much to do with the decision. Still really excited for the actual game.

finished Dragon age origins with all dlcs a week ago, then you see this trailer and you want to step into a time machine back to 2008. Actually let me go back to 1991.

DA music choice has always been bad imo, the Marilyn Manson one from the DA:O in-game trailer grew out on me because it had the dark blood vibe even if I find orchestral/''epic music'' more fitting for a fantasy world and I suspect this trailer was made years ago when the ''live service game'' was still a thing and maybe EA didn't want to waste more money on a new trailer for it having a gameplay reveal 2 days later.
In any case the game seem to look a lot better on the gameplay trailer but I'm still unsure of what they can show in only 15 minutes on what I assume is the ''Neve recruit quest'' they need to sell this game HARD.
Scout Harding was one of my favorite NPCs in Inquisition.
The animation is a bit wonky, but I'm excited to see her making a comeback.

It's so hard to not be pessimistic in situations like this when we have been disappointed so many times recently with things we love being twisted into something unrecognizable. I purchased DAO, DA 2, and DA 3, and want to continue enjoying and supporting this series but I'd be lying if I said there aren't some of those familiar red flags popping up. I hope this time is an exception.

This is what happens when you pander to new players while not caring about old fans or the old games. If they think simply having Varric in the game is enough... I want a new game like DAO, dammit
10:50 They are saying Companions are a major focus for DA4 so to them they may have thought this was a accurate reveal, however to fans the overarching story is the main draw and has been for every installment with companion complementing the story. The disconnect is they shifted the attention off of the Dreadwolf and made it about the companions.
They even hinted to Solas not being the only villain as well on twitter too so the focus is not all on him anymore. The focus is clearly on the team, which is exactly what they showed.
No, i'm a fan of Dragon Age 1 and 2 and the group dynamic and writing is more important than the story, always has been. Also, who the fuck give a shit about "the Dreadwolf" outside of the handful of people who actually played Inquisition AND it's DLC to the end...?
That's kinda crazy, because we play these games for companions first and whatever Jade Empire / Kotor / Dragon Age Origins / Dragon Age 2 / Inquisition storyline comes is just a bonus.
Maybe to some. I love the main story, but to be honest, the conversations and devolvement of your companions has been the most compelling part of Bioware games to me personally. I totally understand if others don't feel that way, but I think it's reasonable to assume I'm not entirely alone in that opinion.
Though that necromancer definitely does look like a Borderlands character which I do admit is very cringe.
Yeah but I heard that they are making companions NPCs and that you cannot play as them as well as restricting the party to 3. Which is something that I hate that they are doing. Cause it just makes it Medieval Mass effect.

Perhaps he bleached his hair in his youth and he's let it go natch now. Anyway, I'm trying to keep my excitements/disappointments in check. Really looking forward to tomorrow. Also YAY Harding! I liked her character in Inq. Glad she's been bumped up to 'starring' rather than support.
Tbh the thing I'm most offended by is the AWFUL cover of 'Heroes' - one of the greatest songs ever written - because they've turned it into a cutout anthem. They don't even stay true to or enhance the melody, but flattened out the tune to the blandest level. So bad!
I've actually watched the trailer myself now and confess I also have my concerns. I was really worried when Andromeda revealed it's character models and they had the same chunky - does anyone remember those stretch-doll toys from years ago? Like that - models. This feels worryingly the same. And oh dear the music. But but...I'll reserve judgement till we get the proper gameplay reveal tomorrow.
They shared what looks like an in game screenshot of some of the characters and they look SIGNIFICANTLY better than they did in the trailer thankfully. And for Varric, I think he probably looks that way because he's in disguise. That's the only reason I can think of for him having a beard

I didn't hate it as much as I see a lot of people do, but I did not enjoy the Overwatch design of the characters, and I really question the decision to make the trailer in this art-style and tone. Even if the art-style turn out to be only for this trailer, it is a really strange choice and I do not understand how anyone could think it was a good idea.
Concerning the tone, I've seen so many trailers for games that are not indicative of the end product in terms of tone, so I'm actually not that worried, I think they wanted to go for a celebratory feel, but again I question this decision, especially in light of previous trailers and teasers, and the 3 games that came before this, it just doesn't fit, or at least it doesn't fit as the main cinematic trailer, it could have been fine as a fun side trailer to celebrate the fact that the game is soon finally here, while also releasing a proper lore rich trailer with a tone more in line with what Dragon Age has had in the past.
At the end of the day, I was already on the fence about this game, and I was never going to buy it day 1, and in that regard nothing has really changed, I will wait and see how it turns out. If it seems like the game is good, then I'll buy it a few weeks after release.
Agree with your thoughts, the reveal trailer did not do the world and previous titles any justice, but hopeful that that the gameplay trailer takes us in a different direction

Rage marketing doesn't work. Old fan don't buy games because of rage, and new would be fans stay way from the mess.
Solas is the main reason why i was hyped for the game, it seems that they completely axed the focus on him and will prolly turn him into some side generic villain instead of a main one.
IMO Solas was always meant to be an antagonist, not a villain, so I was actually expecting them to come up with another main one. From that perspective the name change is making sense to me.
they had an interview that specifically stated that solas was going to still be a villain, but he wouldn't be the only one and we would also be fighting other gods. i can't say i imagine a god would be a generic side villain lol
I think it was more that they wanted to focus on the main character and companions than on the villain, how does the new main character even know who solas is we aren't sure yet.

The gameplay reveal helped, so I deeply feel you, Wolf. My expectations quite aren't in the Deep Roads but maybe, just maybe they would have known that given the news of this game +Bioware for years, the trailer direction was NOT the way to do it! Assurance goes a long way.

The graphics on that snippet of gameplay look amazing tbh. With a proper PC, that can max them out I am sure this game will look amazing. I am saying that it just has that "unique"sort of look in terms of graphical choice by the devs. Also lets be honest people, if you are really a fan of a franchise, you will give every entry that it makes a shot, purely to see what was born from the ideas. BioWare is basically Theseus’s game studio. They are not the same company that made Mass Effect and Dragon Age Origins.
I was really hoping that Bioware would do the Dragon Age Franchise some justice… but I cant say I am surprised that they produced something no one really wanted. Dragon Age: Origins will always be the GOAT to me

Thanks for your balanced assessment of this. The development hell this game has been in + the weird tone of the trailer has me expecting the worst, but we won't know for sure until the game is out. So I'm holding my judgement until then.
What a strange decision it was to release that trailer as the reveal one, like you mentioned. That said, the snippets on twitter and the screenshots I saw, plus the 24 second gameplay clip have me feeling hopeful for tomorrow against all logic! Love the world and characters of Dragon Age so hoping it's decent tomorrow so I can dive back into the world, ready for it!

Just so you know, if no one told you already in Dragon Age Last Flight book it's about a lady who comes across the hero of the 4th blights sisters journal or notes, and apparently she used magic to put Griffion eggs in a stasis because the wardens using the joining on them was killing them off, but by the end of the book the the lady finds the eggs so ya they are back, but who knows for how long
Yeah, my theory after seeing this trailer is that the multiplayer elements they originally planned on for this game are still around in the DNA of the overall art design/direction. Like maybe this intro had been planned out for a long time - since before they decided to drop the multiplayer. Another reason could be that the same marketing people who wanted DA4 to be Anthem-like in the first place are still impressed by the marketing/overall look and vibe of similar games like Fortnite, Apex, etc. And therefore they made the trailer like this. Tomorrow's gameplay reveal will definitely tell us a lot.

I thought the trailer wasn't good but I don't get why people think this trailer is really what the game is going to be when there is leaked developmental footage, and several other trailers that show what the game may be like.
Most of the people jumping the gun are the ones who've just been saying "lol rip bioware" for years like a broken record and refuse to acknowledge that they might be wrong

I've never played Overwatch, Fortnite or any of their clones. The trailer still left me thinking of that type of game and the micro transactions that come with them.
This trailer is a parody of Dragon age! When you compare this to the trailers from BG3 or Witcher 3, the difference in quality is abysmal
idk if its "abysmal" but i have to admit that Dragon Age has an identity crisis since the jump from Origins/Awakening to Dragon Age 2. and even involves less and less adult content. (i proudly don't use brothels irl but in a dark fantasy game brothels just fit the hole vibe for example. also at least one sexy girl like Morrigan or Isabella. I don't know why there are these changes, but if the rest of the game is good i don't want to complain (especially if there is finally mod support)
I still think that gameplay is something different and this trailer was yust for new audience.
I think some people have confirmation bias; they were looking to shit on it. I don’t think BioWare helped themselves with that trailer though.

Whatever your feelings on the trailer, the first real reveal for the game should have been bold enough to both excite and reassure fans. Ask yourself, given the development resets (with a boneheaded obsession with live service at one point), the layoffs, and the precarious recent history (with anthem and Andromeda): Does seeing this reaffirm that Bioware still has it? Because thats not how I felt watching the trailer. I'm hoping the gameplay reveal knocks it of the park.
Personally, I'm going to reserve judgment until I see the full gameplay trailer, because I know that the big cinematic ones are usually stylized for more flash rather than substance

I thought entering the Veil was supposed to be impossible. A big deal of it is made when the Warden and the Inquisitor physically enter it. It can change people for the worst. Yet she's jumping veils like "Yayyy, look at me I'm so quirky and edgy" ughh, of course they would dumb it down.
Anyone remember King Alistair in the 1st Dragon Age? Well... he was a joker, light hearted, who stepped up and became more serious as you played the game. I loved Alistair, I had a crush because he had a corny sense of humour. Maybe this is why they decided to make a more 'fun' trailer, after all, there was a precedent with King Alistair/Alistair in the 1st DA... Just a thought, it was a long time ago and people may not remember him and remember how they thought he was annouiong (I loved him). Lets wait for the game to see.
I've been playing since Origins and I fell in love with all of Thedas' Lore at first sight, however, I'm not at all excited about the new DA, for a few reasons, firstly EA, secondly, the people responsible for the game's success left Bioware and the current people responsible for project are following new trends in the gaming industry, a lot of money and little quality.
The gameplay snip and the screenshots look fine; what I didn't appreciate is people using those after-the-fact examples and then saying the "negativity" was wrong--that's gaslighting. We can think the snip looks good, and be hopeful, and that trailer still be way off on tone and art. Those feelings are not mutually exclusive, and the "community council" members who are acknowledging the trailer's miss while still promoting their experiences are the ones I lean towards trusting.
The same crowd that goes around telling people that cinematic trailers are worthless when they are good is now judging a whole as game on a cinematic that was bad.
How the fuk is that reasonable?

It states in the very beginning that everything was in-engine footage, which gives people the impression that the game will look similar if not exactly the same (Edit: thankfully, the screenshots they released after the trailer seem to look much better, so this was likely just a big marketing misstep). If the trailer instead said that it was purely cinematic and not shot in-engine, that would be a different story.

I see your point over their past usage of mainstream songs for marketing videos , but i can't really agree that it's just that and the same vibe . Hell i even remember that DA:O intro cut-scene with a 30 seconds from Mars song ... Those did not show the true aesthetics and vibe of the game , but they used to be full on CGI . Here we got something made ingame . The visuals are unlikely to be drastically different from the video shown yesterday , which is definitively an issue , among others for some fans . We'll see soon enough anyway
I hate the fact that they revealed the companions. That should be part of the mystery of an RPG when you explore the world and talk to its people. I feel like 20% of the mysterious lore is lost.
i don't know any CRPG that didn't revealed it's companions before launch. But i do think necromancer guy should have kept his badass skull mask so his appearance might be a mistery,
Inquisition also showed the companions on their trailer, but they didn't named them in that Borderlands style... Legit waiting for the gameplay footage because that's the only thing that can save it now for me

After seeing that trailer I was reminded that this game was originally intended to be a live service type online game when it was first announced. They said they ditched that but the trailer makes me think maybe they didn’t entirely.

Insiders and other people who had early access said good things about Anthem before it released. They failed to say anything about the negatives. Cyberpunk showed us 48 minutes of gameplay, turned out the game did not play quite the same. So I'm keeping that in mind too.
I was a huge fan of Origins, so I remember getting hype for DA2. That game... we should have known it was going to be bad from that infamous "awesome button" preview, I think it was from E3. I wasn't personally a fan of Inquisition, but I do know a lot of people loved that. I still have hope for Dreadwo- err Veilguard, but I'm definitely not falling for any hype train that might sneak up. This is a game whose development got restarted over and over, after all. One of the versions they were going for was literally multiplayer live service nonsense. And don't ever forget the shit sandwich that was ME3's multiplayer and Inquisition's war table shenanigans. The story (minus DA2) has always been good, and I liked Absolution, as well as some of the tie-in comics and stuff, but as far as gameplay... we'll see.
Problem is I have 0 confidence in them telling raw, unfiltered, dark story. What I am expecting is soft, modern, inclusive and boring story. Graphics are secondary to that.

Hmm I don't agree with that. The trailers for Inquisition were pretty consistent with the tone of the game. Such as 'The Elder One' trailer or "Heroes of Thedas".

That initial trailer from Xbox event had me worried. But the brief gameplay clip they showed today, eased my mind alot. That felt like Dragon Age.
Even if the game itself isn’t like the trailer, the trailer was NOT Dragon Age - it looked like Overwatch artists vomited DEI all over the place, and just slapped “Dragon Age” on it.
It looks cartoony, and I came away just yearning, again, for Dragon Age Origins.
I remember half way through the trailer I was like oh boy can’t wait to see what Wolfheart is gonna say 😂😂
That 30 second clip was enough to calm the brakes and go okay, that looks more in line with Inquisition.
