    Dude, I want to hear more... I am a super big nerd of fantasy, action packed, comedic, fueling and thinking books and movies! I'm really looking forward to the next video. But can you give me something to work with~ knowledge of the elves, and how the last or only Druid being Alenon Is the only one left?
    Now I haven't yet read these books, but I am more than interested to do so! So an idea stretching off of the show would be nice.

      Most of the Druids were killed by the Warlock Lord during the First War of the Races, except Bremen (who then adopted Allanon and taught him to be a Druid) and Cogline (who had already left the Order, and is centuries older than he looks).

    when I was 14 I was walking down a hallway at a community center and found The Elfstones of Shannara book just laying in the middle of the hallway. Hey, I'm just getting into this series after finishing season 2 of the show (I really hope some other network picks up the show, I want a third season and more if possible). I enjoyed the first season but outright LOVED the second season and now I want to get into the books. I just ordered the Sword of Shannara trilogy the other day as I knew those were the first three but I was curious what your recommendation would be for the order in which a new fan should read the series. I'm pretty broke right now so it'll take some time for me to collect the series but I plan to do it if I enjoy the Sword of Shannara trilogy (I'm pretty sure I will), so I was just curious what such an in-depth fan as yourself might recommend as to the order in which new fans should read the series.
    Anyways, thanks for these videos! I love watching lore videos for fantasy series like The Elder Scrolls and The Lord of the Rings and it seems like there is a terrible lack of lore videos for the Shannara series so I'm glad that at least someone is covering it!
    PS: Love the RuneScape troll @ 2:32. That's another great fantasy series, there.

    • @CJDExplains
      @CJDExplains  5 років тому

      Hey thanks for stopping by! I know how you feel, especially with the way they ended season 2, very frustrating!
      For reading order I would recommend you follow the publication order for your first read through. If you want to read through again, then there is another order that basically weaves all of the books together. You can find both orders on terrybrooks.net, the authors official website.
      I hear ya on the lore aspect. Unfortunately I won’t be doing much more with that. I had a pretty in depth video that took a ton of time to create that was taken down by the people who own the rights to Shannara on film.
      I appealed, but was basically told tough luck. You get too many of those copyright strikes and your channel gets shut down. It’s just not worth rolling the dice on.

    • @jakobfel2
      @jakobfel2 5 років тому +2

      @@CJDExplains No problem man, glad I found these videos, they made the series even more appealing to me! But yeah, as much as I hate streaming, I hope they move to Netflix or something so we can get another season, I'll just wait for the DVD release heh.
      Anyways, thanks for the recommendation, I'll try to do that if I can. I'll take a look at the list and start working on the collection once I can. As for the takedown, that's absolutely absurd that they did that. It'd be one thing if you were using a bunch of copyrighted content but if it was just a lore talk video, I don't see why they should have a problem with that.. I guess they just didn't like that they couldn't make money off of that. -_-
      Either way, I appreciate the videos you were able to post nonetheless, they gave a good setup for me, going into the books!

    Can you tell me more??? I watched season 1 and some of 2, and i was confused.... it said that Allanon was in the Druid Sleep for 300 years.... which makes sense, as people don't believe in magic anymore. But, in the second season, it said that Allanon fought alongside Shea Ohmsford to destroy the warlock lord, 30 years ago. it just doesn't make sense... how??? I thought he was asleep?? Also Mareth looks young, how was she alive all this while, and still hasn't mastered her power????

    • @CJDExplains
      @CJDExplains  6 років тому +2

      Yeah there were some consistency issues between the two seasons. Allanon had been asleep since the end of the war of the races, which was 30 years before season 1.

    • @CJDExplains
      @CJDExplains  6 років тому +2

      As for Mareth, her powers didn’t manifest until she was older, and with no one to help her learn, they became more and more out of control.

      Yep, the show did some great things and had some great performances. I think they really took a wrong step starting with elfstones, even though it was the best of the original books. Because the wrapped everything up in the first season, they didn’t have anywhere to go with the second. So they just mashed a bunch of stuff together from various books. A shame really.

    Loved the video. I have the entire series myself. I only have one complaint. you stated that Shannara was similar to Lord of the Rings. But in fact Terry Brooks pretty much ripped off LOTR for Sword of Shannara. This has been proven. On top of that I will say this, Terry Brooks learned from his mistake and created his own wonderful world. I love his work. Am so sad how season 2 of the show came out. So much history to take from and they did that. Hey can you answer a question ive always had? The 4 lands is North America, right? So what happened to the rest of the globe? It couldnt have all gone to become Water World. The Himalayas are the highest point in the world, geographically speaking. So just that. Cheers mate. Keep up the videos, i like them

    • @CJDExplains
      @CJDExplains  6 років тому +1

      Yeah, I was trying to be diplomatic with my description, but you’re right. Of course, since LotR’s basically WAS epic fantasy before Sword, it would be difficult to avoid the very real similarities.
      As for the Four Lands, I have always thought of them as North America. We see other lands as well eventually, across the blue divide for instance, when the Jerle Shannara is in search of Antrax.

    In my opinion the tv series was way off and interjected too much modern social issues into the show thus changing the entire feel. The one thing I would say is do not watch the show until you read the books. I’m the books it’s only hinted that it’s post apocalyptic for a long time at least in the order they were released. In the show it’s layed out for you immediately and it takes away from the story. The real question I think is should they along with word and void be read in order of release or chronological.

      I was just wondering, did you realize at first that Shannara was our world in the future? I remember thinking it might be but I wasn't entirely sure until some of the later books, then of course the Genesis of Shannara series and Word and Void explained everything. I was also in grade school though when I first read the originals so I guess that might explai why I did not immediately pick up on it.

      First of all thanks for stopping by and commenting! And yeah, I think it was the second time around that I read Sword that I caught the bit about it being our future. LIke you I was in grade school when I read the trilogy the first time around, and I was just so swept up in the story I missed some of the details. I love that Terry wrote Word & Void, and then tied it all together with the Genesis Series.

      The Rovers - Yes the Rovers are humans. They are the Shannara equivalent to Gypsy's or Romani. Nomadic people who live in tribes, that are universally despised by everyone else. They play a bigger and bigger role in the series after this book.
      The Story - My next video covers the Sword of Shannara, which is the first book in the series. It will hopefully fill in some more gaps for everyone. If not, feel free to comment specific things you would like to know and I will get on making more videos!

    I just want to know if you have a clue on with the markings on Allanon’s neck and what do they mean and how is it they disappeared in season two episode three as he flew out the gate to escape and what did that mean

    • @CJDExplains
      @CJDExplains  6 років тому

      I am assuming that those are druidic glyphs that have been basically carved into his body, which allows him to use certain types of magic. Cogline has some as well, although they look like tattoos on him, which tracks since traditionally Cogline is a former druid.
      I think what we were seeing in Episode 3 was that Allanon used more power than he was able to in his condition, and as a consequence lost those runes. In essence he used them as fuel for his magic, which meant they were "burnt up".
      What consequences that will have down the road remain to be seen, but I can guess that he now has lost the ability to do certain magical things, either permanently, or until he recharges with the Druid Sleep.

    Don't get me wrong I also believe that although some can parallel this and Lord of the rings,but I personally think these books were a way better read and really brought you places. The kind that give you that adventurous travel as with Lord of the rings it feels like your just "WALKING ALL DAY EVERYDAY". I know Lord of the rings was written back in the 30's, so I'm a believer it got the first big motion picture make because of it's longevity, I do believe that in the 10 years or so The shanara world will get it's big block buster moment cause it deserves it. But the show isn't bad at all, just don't like how they portrait Allanon and I know it's been awhile since I read,but I'm pretty sure Will is Shea's Grandson and not his Son

      That is a thing made up for the television show, so I would have to assume they picked that out of the Word & Void books and applied it to the Druids to add something to them that sets them apart immediately. It might have been added to suggest a connection to the Word and the Knights, to be explored in a later season.

      That’s not the story from the novels, which is what I was talking about here. Elves are from the Age if Faerie, and as such, have always been there, they just chose to hide until the destruction of the old world.

    Everyone says, there are things that work in books but not on film, but I don't buy that bullshit. Can anyone give me an example of something like that, at all? If you can, what film adaptation did they try it in? What makes you think that it didn't work?
    As far as I'm concerned it's just an excuse to butcher other people's masterpieces, whilst still capitalising off of the name.
    This is not a criticism of the Shannara Chronicles, rather a commentary on the arrogance of the entire film industry!

    • @CJDExplains
      @CJDExplains  6 років тому

      That’s an interesting line of thought. I think the only time you have something in a book that can’t be successfully translated to the screen is when they are inferior narratives, like a characters internal dialog.
      If something like that is crucial to the story, then you are presented a pretty impossible challenge. Other than that I tend to agree with you.

    I think I might like shanara better than game of thrones because of their magic and great special effects . to be honest it looks better than game of thromes in terms magical content. Game thrones is mostly talking g and fighting with barely special effects I think I like arya storyline and khaleesi and Jon snow

      +queenofsheba1000 there are definitely a lot more scenes with magic and special effects, but more than anything else I prefer Shannara for its hope.
      The world i have to live in is full of examples where the good guy loses, I want to read or watch fantasy to see the world how it should be; through hardship, bravery and sacrifice good wins.
      I get that in Shannara. I don’t in GoT. Thanks for watching! I hope you stick around!

    they strayed so far from the source material, it became sort of ridiculous. At least to someone like me who read nearly everything about it.
    Some changes were interesting, like turning the Highlands of LEah into a giant dam. It made an otherwise forgettable area have some uniqueness to it. The rest of that arc was completely fucked, mainly because they failed to deliver a good alternative storyline. Instead it was a wash. Finally, Paranor was a huge let down, considering the source material describes it as, "A mighty Castle, built on a plateau overlooking a medieval forest." and we got, "desert mountain ridge, with Paranor being a series of carved vaults inside it.
    I really liked the aesthetic they hit with the show though. The show was watchable, and had some strong moments, but all in all, i didnt like it much.
    If another attempt is ever made to adapt the story to the screen, i hope they stick closer to the source material next time.

    • @CJDExplains
      @CJDExplains  3 роки тому

      I agree for the most part. A lot of the changes didn’t seem to make a lot of sense, while others were welcome. I quite liked Eritrea having a more pivotal role in things, and I thought pulling in pre-Shannara lore for that was a good idea. Now how they handled it with the Bloodfire seemed nonsensical, but then again, how they leveraged it in the second season seemed interesting again.
      And don’t get me started on Brona copying Allanon’s body.

  • @jachyra9

    The Shannara Chronicles is awful. I say that both as a fan of the Shannara series since 1982 and as an intelligent human being with good taste. A literary adaptation should strive to either respectfully sustain fidelity to the source material or improve upon it. The Shannara Chronicles does neither. This show is a horribly banal and derivative goulash of The Hunger Games, Divergent, Xena: Warrior Princess, and Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth movies, making it painfully obvious that it was designed and engineered explicitly for dumb teenagers. If the show had decent writing and directing, then at least it would be watchable trash like those movies and shows are. But this isn’t the case. Terry Brooks willfully sold his vision for a few extra heads of cabbage he never needed. He should hang his head in shame. This show isn't Shannara. It's just garbage.

    • @CJDExplains
      @CJDExplains  6 років тому +1

      Hey Mark. First let me thank you for coming by and sharing your thoughts. I must confess I have had the same thoughts while watching the first season especially. The show is a pale shadow of the novel it's based on. While some of the changes were necessary from a story telling standpoint, many were not and didn't make a lot of sense.
      After the 3rd episode or so, I had to make a decision. To either boycott the show because it didn't line up with my expectations of what an adaption should be, or accept it for what it was, a story inspired from work that I love, that has the potential to expose these books to a new generation that wouldn't have known about them any other way.
      And that is what is happening. Just from the few videos I have made here on this channel I have spoken with many people who are now searching for something more after seeing the show. There are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of new Shannara readers out there in the world now, because of this show, and in the end isn't that worth something? Isn't that worth many, many somethings?
      As an aside, since Shannara was spawned out of a love of Tolkien and his works, the Sword of Shannara is basically a re-contextualization of the Lord of the Rings, as admitted by Terry Brooks himself, it would seem obvious that any visual works based on the Shannara series would share aesthetically and thematically, with LoRs as well, but I do see your point. I will say that a few of the actors have, in my opinion, captured the essence of their characters in a way that I believe should be praised, chief among them are Manu Bennet and Ivana Baquero.
      In the end, we can either cheer these people on from the sidelines, hoping that with each season they get closer and closer to the ideal we all keep in our heart of hearts, or we can... not. I respect your decision and the obvious passion for Terry's work that drives it. I just don't share it.
      Thanks again for stopping by!

      @jachyra9 6 років тому +2

      I’ll start out here by saying that I’ve had by now hundreds of interactions with both Terry Brooks and Peter Jackson apologists, and none have remotely approached the politeness and respect you’ve extended me. All of them have defaulted to defensive belligerence, which is only natural since it isn’t possible to intelligently defend either The Shannara Chronicles or Jackson’s adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works. If it was possible, no one has effectively done so yet. To wit…
      Your observation/rationale that, despite The Shannara Chronicles being both objectively bad and a horrible adaptation of Terry Brooks’ works, the series has allegedly compelled thousands of people to read Brooks’ novels is one of the standard defenses of Jackson’s movies as well. The problem, however, is that something bad does not become good by engendering a good result. The thing itself is still bad. Worse, those thousands of people you mentioned will, like all of those new Tolkien readers, invariably conflate Brooks’ works with this awful show. And since the gap between those works and this show is so large, arguably even larger than the space between Peter Jackson’s horrible films and Tolkien’s works, those new readers will at the very least find it even more jarring a transition, and ultimately find it difficult to reconcile. So no, to answer your question, it’s not worth something. It’s not worth anything. Well, I suppose that it’s worth something to Terry Brooks and his publisher. And their mutual bank accounts.
      I also disagree with your opinion concerning the casting. Manu Bennet is a decent actor, but his acting style coupled with the dialogue he was given does not in any way capture the essence of the character he is portraying. The fact that Bennet is shorter than I am and in no way resembles Allanon merely emphasizes this.
      The concept of faithfulness in regards to the adaptation of literature into film or television goes beyond the superficial, or at least it should. When people seem incapable or unwilling to grasp Tolkien’s creation beyond the superficial, for example, it makes me wonder if they’ve actually read his books at all. A truly faithful film or television adaptation of a book would not necessarily imply slavish reverence, but rather compatibility. And compatibility would not necessarily imply mechanically reproducing the book’s superficial elements, but rather successfully conveying its spirit. The Shannara Chronicles doesn’t do that. This show is so preoccupied with placating its intended audience of teenagers already saturated with bad/popular fantasy and sci-fi imagery that it never establishes its own identity. This makes it all the more difficult to accept the inherent stupidity on display in every poorly shot scene, every banal characterization, every ear-bleeding line of horrible dialogue, every insipid costume that looks as though it was bought at Patagonia or Urban Outfitters, and every wide-panning helicopter shot clearly intended to remind you of how much you liked those Lord of the Rings movies filmed in New Zealand. I could go on.
      As I said, I could enjoy this show as I would any number of middling sci-fi or fantasy shows that at least make an effort to take themselves seriously and respect their audience. The Shannara Chronicles would be an awful show even if it wasn’t adapted from Terry Brooks’ works. That it is just reminds me of that old saying about outhouses painted vermilion: it only makes the stench worse.
      In any case, thanks again for being polite and respectful.

    • @CJDExplains

      +Mark Spada great response. And thanks for the kind words. My goal is to create a community of people that welcome everyone, not just those that agree with them, since here is value in debating ideas with each other, as long as there is a foundation of mutual respect.
      I don’t find fault in anything you have said, I guess I’m just hoping that I can do something to help over come the vast chasm of expectation, and help viewers become readers.
      I am fully aware it may be a losing battle, but I like a good fight, so I’m willing to throw myself into the fray, so-to-speak, and see what I can do.
      Have a great day, and thanks again for chatting, it’s been great.

      Sorry to add my two cents here, but I don't think the book fans were ready for so many drastic changes and it turned them off, myself included. A lot of the changes were for good reason but then there are some, i.e. turning Shea into a broken shell of a man and father to Wil who drinks himself to death, that didn't seem to make any sense. I stopped mid first season but I am happy for those that enjoy it. I still have my books after all and they will never deviate.
