The original kite pioneers were riding water skis in the gorge (Hood River, OR) in the early 90's (or maybe late 80's). The kite bars had a reel for the 2-line set up. I'm certain there is footage out there somewhere (probably on VHS).
There’s a documentary it’s called upwind the launch of a sport I believe there they have footage of people riding waterski’s. I think you can watch it on UA-cam
@voodooman179_._3 thanks 👍 I watched it and saw clips from 1988 (around the time of my first adventure to the gorge, where I first witnessed the kite w/water skis).
Yes - That´s how kitesurfing was born. In the beginning they had trouble controlling the power using a regular sized surfboard as it was a downwind only exercise on the early two-line kites, and they used skis instead. Later they switched over to smaller directional surfboards. Fun Fact; Robby Naish still only kites on directional surfboards to this day..
Not the first. I nearly tried it a few years ago after being inspired by videos. It's interesting how much kite skiing developed our sport thanks to Cory Roeseler! And how boards became as big as surfboards before an almost snowboard size. I'd like to see interview of these legendary inventors who starred in 'UPWIND LAUNCH OF A SPORT' Great video Ben. I too will tick kite skiing of my bucket list one day.
I first saw Cory Roeseler on his kite skis back in 1986 at Hood River. He was flying a stack of Flexifoil ram-air kites. I then sailed next to him on my windsurfer at Kanaha in about 1992 or 1993 - he was ripping on his short skis - flying his fiberglass spar kite. But I was a bit faster, and I could point a bit higher.
Actually on snow with skis you get more speed and can go more upwind with skis than with a snowboard. Probably because you have two edges so you can hold against more force from the kite. The only downside is you are always standing twisted so your knees might start hurting after a while.
I did kite skiing decade ago big chops i even chopped up and rockered some plastic cutting boards and bolted them to a pair of skate shoes and did kite "rollerbladeing" ... sooo yeah not new matey just not pretty enough for the silverscreen

Great video Ben. I too will tick kite skiing of my bucket list one day.
Check out Cory Roeseler for some kite ski history
😂 exactly
Wieder einmal ein tolles Video! Respekt vor dieser Leistung! Chapeau! 👍👍
Sauber Ben, schaut kompliziert aus, würde ich vermutlich auch nicht versuchen, war aber sehr schön anzuschauen 😂

Haha i was just checking 5 minutes ago if you released a video new you did ❤
😂😂 didn’t expect kite skiing
Best videos out there!🔥
Next time, cross the skis for the style ! 🤣
What a challenge ! Congrats 👍🤙
When you jump...
Haha 😂
Die Monoskinummer hätte ich gerne noch gesehen😂
Crazy video, always inventing new ways to ride,😅 looks very difficult and heavy for your legs 💪💪
You are quite the athlete; this is not easy at all.
You need a rope slider harness! Awesome
Yes that will work
Excellent Ben, next time you've to try also mono ski ;-)
Coole Action...Ich seh dich schon demnächst mit einem Tretboot übers Wasser kiten. Liebe Grüße
0:08 there's actually tons of old videos of guys kite skiing 😅
He makes great video’s but never used Google I think😂
Hahaha 😆
It’s really just a matter of having enough speed… you can plane on a wakeboard (more surface area) much easier
Next time Mono-Ski

I saw Damien le roi with skis an kite a few years ago👍
Haha another question answered I didn’t know I had
What is that spot
Saint marie de la mer
@ yooo thanks bro
next time try a monoski

Good grief... just did the maths it was nearly 15 years ago 😢
Haha 😂
Ganz neu ist es nicht. So waren die ersten Anfänge des Kitesurfens. Wurde auch schon mit Wakeski probiert.
Now try one ski.
I think that would be much better, especially going upwind
Chuck Patterson Jaws
After you get going on two skis, drop one and go just on one.
hahaha...it was fun to watch. Not sure if you enjoyed it so much :)))))
ich hoffe nicht das das der neue trend wird 😂😂😂😂
the sickos kite skied on snow before but not water
I didn’t found that video 🙈

Hey, you are right. It‘s much more dangerous. The only thing we can do is swimming 😂
😂😂😂😂
Try 1 ski
Wrong i was doing this back in 2007 also using a mono ski plus trick ski's

Poor research Ben.....🤦
Probably the reason why I got a kitesurfer 😁🤘
