I attended a military school in the late '60s and early '70s. Some of us (including me) boarded there, meaning I only went home on the weekend. We lived in barracks (big rooms with single bunkbeds) and each one had a "house mother" a single woman, typically older and I think often semi-retired from something else. They had a studio apartment at one end of the barracks, and lived there 24/7, except in the summer. Sometime I suspect maybe in 1971-2 for some reason they hired a young guy to do this duty, not sure why. I'm not sure what he was doing there either, why he was doing it. In any event he moved these enormous speakers and a top-of-the-line stereo into that ttiny apartment, and he let us come in there and listen to his music. Bread was one of the groups he listend to, along with the Eagles and America, and I distinctly remember this song, along with some others. The school was pretty close to hell, but this was one of the high points I guess.

I am a 70's baby and would love to commend you two for turning on new generations to this wonderful Era. I know where I was when I first heard this song. Now imagine, sitting on the steps of your back porch one summer day watching the clear sunny sky listening to your favorite radio station. This song begins and you immediatley become lost in the music and this wonderful voice begins to sing. You have never heard anything like this but you realize that later. Right now you are awash in emotions, lost in the moment. Beautiful white clouds start to slowly appear and float by and the wind blows gently on your face like the caress of a lover you have yet to meet. As the wind softly caresses the leaves on the trees they sway as if dancing for the heavens. You are tingling from the anticipation of what you know is going to be an amazing life. You know that you are loved and as you ease back on the steps you slowly smile. Your life is amazing but the best is yet to come.

On the personal note for the song, back in 1976 my girlfriend and I declared this as "our song" after dancing to it so so many times on "dates" that were basically just slow dancing in the living room to the Best of Bread. Sadly that relationship ended when I graduated in 1978. Happily, 27 years later at our wedding in 2005 we made it our first dance song. We still dance to it when we hear it pretty much where ever we are and what ever we're doing. You picked a great group to love Amber! 🙂

Yes, Bread's ballads are dreamy, but try some of their uptempo songs, too. "Down on My Knees," "Mother Freedom," "Let Your Love Go" and others really rock. These were great musicians and songwriters. Too bad they couldn't last a few more albums -- one of the best groups of their time.

Takes me back to camping trips as a kid. The transistor radio playing on the picnic table and the campfire going with flames and whiffs of smoke heading for the trees. No one talking, just listening to the music and the fire popping.

Another 70's soft rock song to react to would be Lobo "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo, " a cool "story" song.

I would say the signature part of 70's music was inclusion of orchestras to elevate you to another world.

Well, you've now covered this one (a #1 song) and "If" (#4) and "Everything I Own" (#5), as well as "Aubrey" (#15).
The remaining Top 5 hit, "Baby, I'm-a Want You" (#3) is one of their iconic songs, although they also found success with "Lost Without Your Love" (#9), "It Don't Matter to Me" (#10) and three more Top 20 songs.
Personally, I'm rooting for "Guitar Man" (#11), just so we can talk about Larry Knechtel, RIP. But anything is cool.

I love this one. This is American music at its best. Have you guys reacted to the band America? They remind me of Bread and they had some big hits in the 70s like 'Horse with no name', 'Ventura highway', and my personal favourite 'Tin man'.

An album cut of Bread's that is well worth hearing is "Our Lady Of Sorrow". Sung and co-written by the band's other singer, James Griffin, it's a haunting song about a woman fighting addiction.

The lead singer/writer/guitarist/ multi- instrumentalist David Gates and a former member Robb Royer are the only surving members of Bread. The other three members have all passed but also played substantial music parts in other situations. Larry Knectell played the piano part on Simon and Garfunkel 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters' and Bass on many west coast recordings as one of the Wrecking Crew.He is the featured guitarist on the Bread song 'Guitar Man'. Mike Botts played the drums with Linda Ronstadt among others, and James Griffith was the writer of the Carpenters hit 'For All We Know' and also a member of other groups including the Remingtons. Other great Bread songs are Diary, Aubrey, Let Your Love Go, and Mother Freedom. David Gates also has an extensive solo catalog with such great songs as Goodbye Girl, Never Let her go, Love is always 17, and
Overnight Sensation. Thanks for your great channel and positivity.

Went to a few weddings where this was the first dance song. I was a kiddo, and it was all so romantic and kind of uncomfortable in the way that romance is when you are a kid. Now it is a super sweet song to me and I feel good that someone wrote it and the world can't be quite so messed up as it seems sometimes.

I was in high school when this song came out. I listened to this song a lot while I did my homework. I can tell you that when you started this song, I remembered every word and every instrument that was played in the song.... now don't ask me how much Latin I remember from high school. lol It always amazes me how much information us humans can store in our brains... songs from the 60's on can still be recalled whenever heard. I have to tell you too that I wore your "Make Someone Smile" T-shirt to a bluegrass festival that I went to. As I was walking to my seat a gentleman yelled, "I love your shirt! Smile Everybody"....and people smiled and clapped. 😁 Take care and be well.... Thanks for your reaction. Peace.

Evonne Elliman-"If I Can`t Have You" Perfect song...on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.
    Three songs you will LOVE!!!
