- I'm back. I took about a month off from youtube to focus on getting some other work done. Today I am going to show you how to make dowels using a router table.
Thanks for watching and we will see you in the next one!

Leave the ends square and you retain a reference surface.
Awesome video! I use 1/4” dowels to make thousands of packing tools for 420 rollers. The person that said this is too dangerous and that nobody would buy this equipment to make two sticks is dead wrong. These machines will save me thousands on my dowels.
Nice job, but I cannot believe you still have all your fingertips.
To sand a larger dowel. Leave one end square and use a socket bit in ya drill to hold the square end. Works for me, hope it helps. 👍👍
👍 very cool, Good to see you back!
Thanks! I am excited about the upcoming videos I have in the making.
Wes Hamstra Looking forward to it! Want to drop a teaser about it?
Awesome!! You just saved me a bunch of $$
Dude, get your fingers away from the bit please!!! At about 3:40 thought I was about to witness a mangling of the fingers.
Have you tried putting a center hole and screw in the larger dowels, then putting the screw in the drill? Might be able to sand them that way!
Now if I only finish my router table build lol
Now you have a reason to finish it! Have fun!
Glad to hear work is picking up again man!
Dowels are crazy expensive and this is a great way to make sure they match the other wood in the build.
Thanks! I had a project that required 1/2” oak dowels. I did the trick and it worked well.
Thanks, just cut some 1x1s and made dowels this afternoon!
What do do if you want to make hundreds of them fast, buy a industrial machine?
Hello my new friend,
I like the dowel making technique. gave me a good idea. Thank you for sharing the details. See you anytime. stay healthy and happy. Big greetings. (Please watch your fingers. I'm scared)
Your new friend Mehmet
If you mount a featherboard on the table and a featherboard on the fence, there's no need to use your fingers to keep the wood against the cutter. It's far more safe.
@@thedevilinthecircuit1414 yes you are right mate. i have to do this.👏👏👏👍👍👍👍
If I had a 4x4 or more like a 3.5 x 3.5 in could I make a dowel at 2 5 inches same method?
Featherboards!
That is a great idea. I need to make some
Good idea. Just what I was looking for.
This great. I want to do some dowel pinning with different types of wood and was wondering where to get different wood dowels… looks like out of the scrap pile. Love that. Thanks
to spin a big dowel in the drill, I guess that you could put a screw into the end of a larger dowel? Needs to be centered fairly well ;-) maybe use a hex head bolt, or Allen head (round head) , in a pilot hole...
Pleaseéééékeepyou fingers away from the bit....use push block....and keep both end of your stick square...for more safety & stability....then cut the end on miter saw or table saw...with cross cut jig
Cool idea. I made some glazing bead the other day, using a router and table saw. I'd started a project, then needed more bead, but the size I wanted wasn't in stock. Next time I need dowel, I'll try the router (although dowel isn't too costly, really).
i need to know what size round over bits i need to use to make 1 1/2" dowels and the size bits i need to make 1" , 3/4", 1/2", 1/4" and i really enjoyed your video on dowel making very informative, send me that info thanks very much.
1 1/2” - 3/4” round over bit
1” - 1/2” round over
3/4” - 3/8” round over
1/2” - 1/4” round over
1/4” - 1/8” round over
Well done Wes Thanks will likely save me a bundle on purchased dowels for joinery
It's some frkn magic!
You've made my day!
Thank you ♥️
fucken 12 second video stretched to 5 min
all this could be simpler with the metric system
You can sand the larger dowels with a hand drill if you chuck up a hole saw (without the center drill) that's slightly larger than the diameter of the dowel, and wrap painter's tape around the end of the dowel until it fits snugly into the hole saw.
Great idea! I also thought about sticking a screw into the bottom of it, but then you need to make sure it’s dead centre.
@@WesHamstra if you don't spin too fast, it's not bad, and you can locate center pretty well, put the dowel against the fence, a pencil where you think center is, rotate the dowel with the palm of the other hand...
Make a taco billiard so awesome
Dont have the planer or router table...think I'll buy the Dowl
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Ive dun a video about dowels
This method is not working for me I tried a 3/4” square stock to make 3/8” dowels but coming up with 3/4” dowels?
Thanks for the info Wes! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Make a spade handle making video with 1½×1½inch(39mm.×39mm.)wood.
Easiest way I have seen to make dowels. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Like the idea. I have a 2x2 that I would like to make into a 1" dowel. I understand that I would need a 1/2" round over but I need to trim the wood down? If so what size? Thanks again
So if I want a dowel that has the exterior diameter 32mm, what router bit do I need?Thank you!
You would divide 32 in half and that is the size router bit you need. You need a 16mm bit
@@WesHamstra Thank you for replying!
Jesus, how NOT to do things.
Nothing wrong with using a router to make dowels, but not using push blocks and letting his fingers get that close to the but is insane.
I have no power tools... Is there another way? 🤨🤨🤨

Find a twig with right size diameter.
السلام عليكم
ما اسم هذه الآلة الصفراء ؟
وكيف يتم الحصول عليها ؟
وشكرا
Hmm I don't have a router table. 🤔
all you need is a router table..
after 10 seconds you need a table saw and a planer 😅
And a pile of correctly sized router bits.
What are floor beds called?
How you will do 5/8 dowels
3/4” with a LOT of sanding!
If wanted a dowel to use as a walking stick What size dowel should I use
3/4”-1” would be good
Гений.
Great! Thank you!
Perfect!
Thanks
if i need to make dwels 25m. how can i do that
Probably a 1/2” router bit to make a 1” dowel and then sand it down to 25mm. As someone mentioned, if you have a 1” socket, you can put your dowel in that and chuck it in your drill. You may need to wrap a little tape around it if it slips in the socket.
25 meter diameter dowel might be pushing your router table.
Nice job on making the dowels Wes! Thanks for sharing the video with us!💖👌👍😎JP
Thanks!
Your very welcome Wes!😎
Interesting way to make em, stay safe 🍻👍
Thanks!
3/4 x2 = 11/2 wut? I think you mean ONE and a HALF or 1.5 inch. got it...
can't you just use mm, like the rest of the world already...
Haha. I only learned mm in school. When I finished school and entered the work force I had to learn feet and inches because no one used mm. I naturally just use inches now. I prefer it.
Inches are KING for construction and accuracy down to 1/32 - they are way more easy to visualize and the units are very much human oriented. mm are great for tiny stuff, but I hate the units on anything over a cm as they are so hard to imagine. Fractions are just so instinctive too. I can easily visualize a foot, inch etc, but in metric I find it hard to visualize mm, cm or meters and there is nothing like a foot - horrible!
Awesome! Handy tips here. But please use push sticks/blocks -- especially down to the smaller dowel sizes. Nobody is exempt from injury (see the jointer injury video by Jonathan Katz-Moses). 🙂
too dangerous, remember that many of us are not experts in working with these tools and they easily blow off the tip of our fingers, and we will not buy one of those machines to make two round sticks
