Puerto Rico does have great potential, but only with independence. Puerto Rico had a free health care system, and going to a university was affordable. Wall Street started to influence the economy in Puerto Rico and introduced neo-capitalism using the colonial installed government in Puerto Rico to privatize and enrich themselves at the expense of Puerto Ricans 🇵🇷

How do you think Puerto Rico would fare as a state?

    • @2pagan
      @2pagan 10 місяців тому

@thenearhorizon worse! Statehood is a fantasy promoted by the pnp to stay in power. If Puerto Rico becomes independent, both parties will cease to exist, and they are afraid that the new government will prosecute them, put them in jail, and confiscate their assets. Under a new government, they will have to answer for their corruption and stealing of public funds. If Puerto Rico becomes a state, it will be subject to double taxation. Citizens will have to pay individual federal taxes to the US and would have to pay state taxes, which will be Puerto Rico. The 11.5 % IVU will have to be raised, the Jones Act ( ley de cabotaje) we will never be able to get rid of. The US national debt is at $ 33.77 trillion. If that debt comes due every American citizen, including Puerto Ricans, if we become a state will have to pay $ 94, 000 thousand dollars. The pnp tell the voters that they are going to get more federal funds. That is a lie. Being a state doesn't guarantee more money in federal funds. There will be a lot of taxes and fees Puerto Rico will have to raise to run the government. Puerto Rico will lose its beauty pageants, Olympic team, etc etc. The pnp is selling una estadidad jibara, where Puerto Rico will keep its language, Olympic sport teams, beauty pageants, etc.

Interesting perspective in all the different videos and the folks interviewed On the video about embracing "US citizenship", I consider myself a Boricua!!! A native Puerto Rican or any person from any Latin American country considers me a "gringa" simply because I was born in NJ. The fact that my parents are Puerto Rican born, the fact that my formative years from the age of 4-14 I lived in Puerto Rico en un campo de Hatillo, the fact that I learned the culture and the language, the fact that I learned to eat !!panas and viandas con bacalao, mofongo, hago pasteles, desgrane gandules as a young child doesn't count to a native Puerto Rican. I have a brother in law, Puerto Rican born who blatantly says that my sister (his wife) and I are not "true Puerto RIcans" but...whatever. I am what I am in my heart and that is... Puertorriqueña.

Great videos on Puerto Rico!! Is this the end of the Puerto Rico videos?
    My stances on the videos
Video 1: Independence- The current status is destroying our economy there needs to be a change. And statehood is never going to happen and it never should. There's way to many obstacles blocking statehood from happening that its near to impossible. Puerto Rico is a different country with its own history, culture, and Spanish is the dominant language on the island. And congress doesn't care about Puerto Rico, they vote on bills saying that they are going to solve the status issue but they always jut let the bills die from the sessions ending.
Video 2: I do consider myself a US citizen since all my life I've been living in the US, and it wasn't until I was 18 that I started really getting into learning about Puerto Rico and studying my roots. I'm an a US citizen on paper, but my blood is Boricua. The US is a good place, but I wouldn't say I'm proud to be American, there's really nothing to be proud about here because the US is a multicultural Union so everyone's their own thing, there's nothing uniting the country anymore, and the country is very divided now with politics and identity its a mess. Be carful what you wish for too the people who say they want statehood just for a few perks, becoming a state is going to come with a lot of baggage.
Video 3: Well I've lived in the US all my life so I'm a gringo. So do I like the Gringas here? No, not really, there are some beautiful ones but very rare. Most of them aren't my type, physically and mentally. I'm mostly into all natural Latinas that are not from the states, they are more beautiful and have traditional values. When I go to Puerto Rico, its like I want to marry every single Puerto Rican women I meet, they are all angels.
Video 4: Same as Video 2.
Video 5: There should be a rule that you should have lived in Puerto Rico for like 5 years to open an Airbnb's or have some sort of relation to Puerto Rico to open an Airbnb like being married to a local. But when its just some person from outside the island and has no relation to the island that just comes to pay no taxes and buying up entire neighborhoods to turn into Airbnb's, that's problem, they aren't here because they love the island and care about helping the economy, they just want to pay less taxes and make money off exploiting the island. We need to abolish Act60, but we cant do that until PNP is out the governors seat and doesn't have a majority in both legislature houses. Also don't vote PPD, but PNP is the one that needs to be taken down most, vote PIP or MVC.
Video 5: I already gave my story on the slang. But ill put it here again. Never heard Jangueo and ea. I know the other words. I also don't know what Wepa means and I've never heard someone use. Don't know if its Puerto Rican slang or something people in all the Caribbean say, but I get a little weirded out when people call me Papi.
Growing up in the states I would only hear my parents and some of my older relatives call me that so from then on I thought of it as just something older people say to young people as a term of endearment and whenever I heard someone saying it on TV shows and movies in the US, its used sexually. And at 18 before I started getting into learning more about Puerto Rico and going back to the island and hearing random people even guys my age calling me Papi, I would get freaked out and a little embarrassed. Didn't know that its like saying "What's up dude" down there, I thought they were hitting on me or they were calling me like "Sweetheart" or "Cutie" when I'm a grown man. I know now, but it still feels weird hearing it sometimes.
Video 6: I could see how it could be considered second class, like not being able to vote for the president, and not getting some of the benefits of the other states. But again, be carful what you wish for too the people who say they want statehood just to get some benefits, becoming a state is going to come with a lot of baggage. Also voting for the president isn't really special anymore because we are always getting such terrible candidates that don't do anything for the nation.
Video 7: I see hope, I'm seeing a lot of younger Puerto Ricans wanting change. Also if we don't see a light at the end of the tunnel, don't give up, don't lose hope.
Video 8: I'm not a big fan of Trump, I think he's a jerk. But I have to agree with the blue shirt guy, his policy's were alright, and the US economy was doing well. Biden I have to disagree with what most of them said, Biden is ruining not just the US, but the world also. Inflation is going up, losing the Afghanistan war and abandoning military equipment, pushing Russia to invade Ukraine by getting Ukraine to join NATO, going on vacations when East Palestine and Maui where hit with natural disasters and not sending them funds, sending billions of dollars and weapons to Ukraine and Israel and not using it to better the US. Biden is definitely elitist liar, when he came down to Puerto Rico he said that he grew up with the Puerto Rican community in Delaware, there's not a big Puerto Rican community in Delaware. One of the thing Biden supporter in the US used to chant was "Stay alive Joe Biden", nobody likes Joe Biden. Nobody voted for Biden, everyone voted against Trump. This guy is way too old, he's falling apart. Id be surprised if he wins again, how could you vote for all this.
Video 8: The Jones Act, I don't see it being taken down anytime soon, there is a lot of support for it in the US and a lot of powerful people back. The only way it will be taken down right away is if Puerto Rico becomes independent.
Video 9: Miguel is 100% right we need to be independent. We were supposed to be independent long ago, but people keep on voting for PNP and PPD so they just keep kicking the can down the road. But more people are starting to become educated about history and what's going on and with PNP being exposed for corrupt multiple time's and all the neglect by the US government more and more Puerto Ricans are joining the Independence movement. Viva Puerto Rico Libre!!

Well said comment. I’m a white American man married to a beautiful Puerto Rican lady from Morovis since 1990 and when we look at everything about PR I think it’s important to keep PR just for Puerto Ricans, there should be an application process for non-Puerto Ricans to live there sort of like a Visa system for foreigners. PR is a small island and when rich foreigners come over and buy up prime real estate then it changes everything about a community surrounding the new developments and it wipes out family budgets and it does more damage than we can imagine. A dual citizenship program would be ideal for PR since they were never a US colony but I agree that bad things were done and I understand since my family came to the US in 1639 and we had to deal with insane hardships but some of us did well. I was dirt poor growing up and my wife is also from a poor family so we understand the hard life. Our two daughters were taught their Latin heritage and encouraged to participate in their culture and they’re in PR right now visiting family with their mother. I love visiting PR and just wandering around the city and anywhere else I can go get lost in, I learned Spanish while dating my wife so I can communicate half decent but I always ask permission to speak English with someone if I can’t explain well enough in Spanish because I’m a visitor and not some arrogant ass. PR benefits from our social benefits programs such as Social Security and other similar aid programs that other islands in the region don’t have and it has a good impact for the people who are in need.

@thenearhorizon It was described as "the key to the Indies." Given the sea currents and wind patterns of the Atlantic, Puerto Rico was usually the first port of call for ships arriving from Europe. Puerto Rico, due to its strategic location, was the first port for ships going to Europe or coming from Europe. That is why England, French, and Dutch were always attacking Puerto Rico.

Stopped in Puerto Rico to resupply because Puerto Rico was the first island that they would come to. Puerto Rico already had a culture 100 yrs before the pilgrims arrived. On April 6,1607, the ships Godspeed, Susan Constant, and Discovery stopped in Puerto Rico for provisions.

    1. Statehood? That can never happen in today’s mainland politics whose voters will never accept a non-English speaking state. It’s silly for Puerto Ricans to think statehood is an option. Study mainland politics and you will realize it’s a false choice. Not fair certainly but that’s the reality.
    2. Independence? PR imports all of its food. There is almost no agriculture and no fishing industry at scale. Its manufacturing is mostly based on US US tax subsidized pharmaceuticals. That will end and those jobs will go away. Home mortgages are affordable because of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Without the US banking system mortgage rates will double and credit will shrink. When the DOJ and FBI leave political corruption will go unpunished. Social Security benefits will stop. Education support from the US Dept of Education will end. Hurricane disaster relief? FEMA isn’t perfect but it’s still billions$ helping to rebuild. Compare PR to Haiti, the DR or Cuba. What country do you want to be?
I know you love your island. I know you sacrifice to live there because of that love and pride. Be realistic. Start with your local town, city politics and government and make it work for the people.

Puerto Ricans would be quite frankly foolish to choose independence. There isn’t going to be a “little bit” of economic suffering as stated by some in the vid. The only reason I see people choosing independence is so it can satisfy their cringe progressive ego. The only thing not letting Puerto Rico become a third world country is the United States.
