  • The Puerto Rican government has closed down hundreds of schools in the last few years. Many are still abandoned but companies, nonprofits and community groups have become interested in the buildings. Who should own them?

It pains me to see abandoned properties in PR. It especially pains me when those properties were schools.

I know I'm late, but one of the school I use to study in closed. In the town I lived in it was one of the oldest schools and one of the few elementary schools. Those kids (that were like a thousand) were moved to schools mixed with highschoolers. This caused problems between the ages and it's still happens, from I've been told the bullying to the elementary schoolers is more common now than before. This project only caused damage and made more corrupt politicians.

This is just heartbreaking. Where have the students relocated for learning? How far is the longest distance a student travels for education?

You deserve an accommodation your self for stepping up and publishing topics that we can consider of high importance. Your a great reporter and no one can take that away from you. The areas that you speak of are critical and relevant to the Puerto Rican culture. I'm a combat veteran from the Afghanistan campaign and I admire your work ethic. Thank you for using common sense to get your point across. I was born there but grew up here always always having the notion of going back now that I'm retired. I would like to hear more of our heritage and the Taino way of life. At 59 years old and, still trying to figure out who I really am. As with most of our soldiers coming out of the Afghanistan war that is a heavy burden to place on anyone with PTSD. I will be sharing your videos with everyone on my face book app. I wish you all the best in the near future, God Bless!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS: I would like to hear your opinion on what I have submitted.
    Sincerely, Jose Serrano

It's enlightening that as a great journalist you bring awareness /light to this drastic situation, but (as Puertoriquenos) if we're not part of the solution, then we're like part of the problem. What can we do as a people change this? How can we make it better? And so I will continue praying, believing that the good Lord will restore faith, good fortune, unity/ cultural pride to the Puerto Rican Community.....

Love this article. 🙌👍The school they closed down in calle Loiza has been turned into a community center with multiple activities for the neighborhood. Also a school in La Cantera in Ponce was acquired by the municipality of Ponce and was given to a church that has different programs for the community. But most of the schools remain abandoned. Also after the earthquakes in Guanica there are no schools because they were all damaged but there is one school that was closed back then now abandoned that the structure didnt suffer damage that could be used for the students if they fix it.

Bianca, if you open a Patreon, I'm the first to sign up. I'd be proud to support your independent journalism. Secondly, I think you should look into municipal legislatures. Think about this:
Puerto Rico has over 1,100 municipal legislators (about 15 per municipality). Almost all of them are party (pnp, ppd, pip) loyalists. Most people don't even know they exist.
If municipal legislatures were actual democratic institutions, Puerto Ricans could have more agency over many of the issues you bring up in your videos because they'd be able to engage with politics at an accessible lower level of government, but this institution as it stands achieves next to nothing in most municipalities.
I'm currently working on my own project to shed light into how our municipal governments run and would happily help you develop a script for such a video.

My wife and I lived in San Juan Condado in 2010/2011. She actually lived and worked there in 1999/2000 for a state side Insurance Company. I now live in Florida and my wife also. If I had the millions that are needed we would come to PR and buy these vacant buildings and donate them to the local communities to fix up and use. I want you to know there are many PR’s folks in Florida and I send your documentaries to them so they can share with other Puerto Ricans. Perhaps in the future some folks from PR will get together and donate funds to your people. I will bet a GOFUNDME FOR PR would raise a lot of funds especially in the Orlando area. Good luck and keep fighting the good fight.

Great video.. Very good info on that issue , The communitys where these schools are have to be active in the proper use of theses abandoned buildings.. Guanica is a good example.. Community , Elderly centers needed across the island due to many factors..

Thank you so much for spreading awareness on what’s happening. Its so powerful and inspires me to help Puerto Rico the most amazing place to finally stop being the victim of colonization. I think about it everyday and it’s comforting to know there’s people out there who care.

Este video me rompió el corazón 💔 It is sad to see how this is a reality in the island 🇵🇷 No me imagino viviendo en otro lugar que no sea mi isla pero es tan triste ver la realidad y que en todos los pueblos tenemos la misma necesidad 😢
