PLEASE READ!! I see a lot of people commenting on ways to gain more storage space whether it be a trailer, hitch rack, or removing my back seats. I know that as bikers we LOVE to solve problems, especially mechanical in nature, but I fear the point of this video may be overlooked. See, there is NO PROBLEM and I already have MORE space and stuff than I need!! The thing that always held me back had nothing to do with material needs, it was all in the expectations in my head. All I had to do was find the courage to quit the analysis and take action.
We put in some SERIOUS road time a couple months ago and it was surprisingly comfortable in that packed car! Driving without being able to see all around you isn't very fun, but we did fine.
I love the can do attitude! Just getting out there with what you've got. If you do want more space though or you ever plan on heading up north in the winter 12-15 passenger Chevy and Ford vans really aren't that expensive if you get one a few years old. You have a fairly new Mazda, I'm guessing it would be worth enough to either sell and buy a van or just trade in. You can't stand up in them like Sprinter vans, but there's room for two mountain bikes in the middle, plus sleeping for two and still two rows of seats in the back. It's actually pretty unbelievable how much room those things have. You clearly have the organization skills. Downsides are that they get much worse gas mileage but you'll never be tempted to get a hotel, you don't always have to find a campsite, and you can keep your bikes inside. I love what you are doing, I have been doing similar out of my Toyota pickup for many years, but I was blown away the first time I took a big van on an adventure with bikes so I thought I better pass along that information.
At the risk of weighing you down, a small trailer would vastly increase your storage space for a few hundred bucks. Even a hitch-basket with one of the big tubs on it. Throw the tub on the diver's seat when it needs to be secured.
Nope, not retired, I just work on the road! If you are really frugal, I think you can get away with living on 8-10K a year or so, maybe even less if you get lucky with bike and car repairs.

Great adventure man! I've been having a blast vicariously watching you and Brian on the road. I did much the same in the mid 90s. Living in the Midwest. I rode some great trails in Colorado. And in the same year traveled across Canada and down the entire East Coast surfing is much is possible , while chasing hurricanes. My wife &. 3-year-old little girl along.. All from my Volkswagen Vanagon we all lived for a month. Many blessings to you and Brian as well. Happy holidays!

Nice! I'd choose living out of my old pickup truck, doing what I love to do, over just about any other life-scenario. I test this theory as much as possible!
If I didn't have 4 10" Cerwin Vega Retro cabinets (full sized Home Theater, 7.1) and a 7ft (H) x 12ft (L) wall unit... everything I own would fit on a bike trailer.
I think there's a pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays that live out of a Westphalia during spring training. Kinda cool that a MLB player making several hundred thousand a year would do that.
I saw that Brian had your car in one of his videos. Thing is that you can see all your stuff crammed into your car. Where I'm at in the Bay Area, and Brian knows this, cars are always getting broken into at the trail head parking lots. You're making it too easy and tempting to the scumbags out there. If you have to leave it all in there, I suggest getting your windows tinted to at least make it not so obvious that you have your entire life in your backseat.
I have definitely thought about that, but haven't had any issue thus far with people wanting to break in. The best way to avoid it has really been the fact that I steer clear of big cities. But yea, the main driving force for me still wanting a Sprinter is to secure my bikes inside safely.

I'm thinking of a similar setup for an extended road trip. Currently trying to decide if it would be worth setting up a sleeping setup inside the car. I could do it, but would it be worth it? How often did you find yourself in a situation where sleeping in the car would have been more convenient? I'm thinking it might be good for stealth camping in towns, times when you're only staying somewhere one night, and so on. You think it is worth the hassle?
I think a lot of it depends on where you want to go. I have found that from state to state there are VERY big differences in the level of access to free camping. For instance, in California it's near impossible if you are on the coast to find free stuff, but in Utah, it's everywhere. I'd say having an open space in the car that you could crash if you needed would be nice, but for the most part camping would suffice. Loved this video. I don't live on the road but I do like sleeping in my car or truck when on road trips. I took my jet skis to Lake Powell from San Antonio TX. My wife and I aren't tall, 5'6ish each so I built a bed that went in the cab of my Crewmax Tundra and we just slept in there the whole trip. I've slept at truck stops, Walmarts and other places. People often hear that from us and think were nuts but you save tons of money to put toward a better trip. I also hate hotels, I never sleep well in them and I have a pest control business so I know the nasty things you can take home from them. I always like seeing other people's sleeping on the road set ups!

In my mind, I have it organized so I can sleep in it as well. Out of 4 camping trips last summer, 2 of them we had to set up in the pouring rain. I want to be able to roll up and just stretch out in the back. I already have a hitch rack, and got a free pod for the roof, so I can keep the majority of the gear out of the car to leave some living space.
you need air helper springs in rear. also look into roof top tents . I have a pickup with queen bed in back 2 thule boxes up top and northshore rack in back love living out of it when i go to colorado for a few weeks in summer pertaining to your other shower video I can shower in the 20's I open front and rear door put a tarp over top of them and use a garden sprayer with extended hose with sink sprayer. to stay warm I heat water and point ducts on my dash to point out towards me while i shower. Have fun and keep liven the dream. One of the best feelings is flying down mountains on 2 wheels.

AHHH Crazy guy. ha, I know, but if you have a place to store them, you would gain a ton of space, you could just cover the metal with some auto carpet from WalMart. I know crazy idea, but it could gain you some room, which may or may not be that important to you. Keep up the great content!

nice set-up I would only recommend removing the rear seats to give you even more cargo room, and some rear strut tower spacers. My Subaru Baja gets used to haul alot of horse feed around and it caused the rear end to sag a bit. I installed some 1/2" strut tower spacers so that the car sits level when fully loaded. They usually run about $40 a pair but they can be made out of any high density plastic as well.

That's a tough one. I just do my best to dry them off once the rain is passed. If I'm at a campsite I will try to cover them whether under a tree, tarp, or whatever as long as I can also lock them up

You should be able to get longer cross bars for the roof, put a cargo box in the middle and the bike racks outside of the bar mounts. That could free up space to throw your seldom or less used gear. That's the way i'm currently running my rig.
I had to come to FL to get my shoulder taken car of, but it was perfect timing as I get to see my family for the holidays as well. Once my shoulder is all taken care of, I'll be heading right back out onto the road!
As a Car guy and a biker guy, You really need to invest in a new suspension because youre gonna be scrapping everywhere XD, invest in a suspension where you can be in a good ride height without scrapping your undercarriage

First off, I don't wash them very often, but when I do it's generally in creeks, rivers, or laundromats.

Been driving Honda Element since 2003, the ultimate MTB vehicle with back seats taken out.
Good ski/snowboard vehicle too with 4wd.

I was wondering was the spare tire in your bottom compartment still you had a lot of stuff down there I wondered if your tire had been moved?

I'm curious what the factory MPG's are for Shelia and what you're seeing. Says a lot for Mazdas powertrain, lol.
They say I'm supposed to have like 30 hwy when not weighed down, but I'm sure I get a decent amount less than that.

No issues with that so far, I think the world is a lot less scary when out in it, and people aren't actually as bad as we imagine.
I have a Old 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Loads of room but Not Easy on Gas, for the Bigger trips...

You should be able to get longer cross bars for the roof, put a cargo box in the middle and the bike racks outside of the bar mounts. That could free up space to throw your seldom or less used gear. That's the way i'm currently running my rig.
I have the longer bars for my room already, but just never got the roof rack since I didn't need the extra space

I had to come to FL to get my shoulder taken car of, but it was perfect timing as I get to see my family for the holidays as well. Once my shoulder is all taken care of, I'll be heading right back out onto the road!

How well do your rear tires on the Mazda wear being loaded down all the time?
They wore pretty ok, but I did have to replace my struts, which were most likely accelerated due to the weight.

As a Car guy and a biker guy, You really need to invest in a new suspension because youre gonna be scrapping everywhere XD, invest in a suspension where you can be in a good ride height without scrapping your undercarriage
